I received an ARC of this book, and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Quinn is so close to achieving her dream of becoming a pirate captain, eager to leave her past behind. When news of her twin brother's sudden death reaches her, she risks it all to attend (and loot) his funeral. But her past catches up to her, and the dream of being a pirate captain has never seemed so far away.

What an exciting first episode! The action starts at the very beginning, and it continues through the end! We're quickly introduced to Quinn--her struggles, her flaws, her secrets--and what she's capable of. She's definitely got some issues to work on, yet I couldn't help but root for her! I'm looking forward to following her journey in future episodes!

The world-building was fantastic! The different clans are really impressive! I also really enjoyed the world itself, though not much of it has been introduced to us yet!

The plot was action-packed, but easy to follow! It drew me in from the first page! I'm so excited for the next episode to come out!

I'm really looking forward to meeting more characters and learning more about the clans and the world itself as On Wings of Ash and Dust continues! I already have a ship (the romantic kind!), and the ending of this book has me waiting very impatiently for more of this story!

I would definitely recommend this first episode to YA fans who love action, pirates, and spectacular world-building!

I’ve been following Brittany Wang for several years online and watching her online journey as she set herself to publish this epic YA Fantasy novel, and she doesn’t disappoint with Wings of Betrayal, the first episode of the six episode serial series full of great characters and world building and had me excited for what’s next.

The world of this story is well detailed and I just wanted more of it, as it’s a fantasy world full of five types of fairies that have their own culture, which each of them fascinating me for various reasons. I also caught little bits of lore and details that I’m sure will play a huge role in later episodes, but already are playing a role as the competition is getting set up. I enjoy the main character Quinn, and got to know her really well with the prologue, and went on from there. While’s she’s tough, she’s a bit selfish and while she sees injustice, there’s a lot of room for growth. The other characters are fleshed out here as well, each showing off their personalities and skills and looking forward for how they will grow in some cases. The plot was unique and fast paced with a couple of big twists, with one that caught me by surprise and I loved the follow up.

I need episode 2 like yesterday! I can’t wait for more!

It felt rushed. I know it's part of a serial series, but still. Things happen too fast for me to get invested in the story. A character dies just so the story could keep moving. I mean it happens all the time in fiction when someone's death pushes main characters to get out of their comfort zone, but for this one I just feel like their death scene just felt ...rushed? It feels choppy. Like homie you need to die now, done, okay byeeee

I picked this up while I was free a couple of months ago, and decided to sample it on a train journey today. I found myself immediately sucked in to a delightful YA fantasy adventure story.

Like many YA protagonists, our heroine Quinn discovers early on that she is manifesting terrifying, unpredictable magic powers. When she accidentally injures her beloved twin brother, Quinn responds in the only sensible way:

She runs off to become a pirate.

When her twin dies tragically young (but I'm not believing anything till we've seen a body), Quinn, a girl with her priorities straight, decides to handle her grief by sailing home and robbing the funeral.

(your honour, I love her).

Alas, a shocking betrayal awaits. (Honestly, I was so genuinely shocked by this betrayal. GIRL.) And in her brother's absence, Quinn is packed up and sent off to compete in the Teen Death Games where the next high monarch of the faerie kingdoms will be chosen. (We only get to meet one of them in this bite of the story, but oh no he's cute).

I was thoroughly impressed by this book. It very much reads as just the first act of a much longer story, but what there is was thoroughly absorbing. I felt myself inhabiting a vivid, intriguing fantasy world that felt like a Pixar or Dreamworks film, following characters that felt fresh and interesting through a plot that hit the ground running and was never easy to predict. I particularly loved the very, very subtle elements of social criticism that were deeply encoded into the protagonist's predicament and story world but never felt preachy or allegorical. And I was completely delighted when the protagonist gets betrayed for behaving, well, precisely how you'd expect a princess from a very entitled family to behave.

My only complaint is that I'm not as interested in the Teen Death Games trope as I am in piracy. Apart from that, however, I had a great time! If you're looking for a high quality YA fantasy romp, check this one out!

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed the first episode of this series! The overall vibes were whimsical and dangerous which was a fun combination. This is the first "episode" style book I'm reading and I was very satisfied with the length. It was about 11 good sized chapters and took me a couple of hours to read which was perfect for an evening.

Quinn was a fun character, she obviously has some serious flaws and things she needs to work on but she is still likable and I can't wait to see her story progress. The other characters introduced were interesting and I look forward to learning more about them, but I won't say more than that!

This definitely had some darker elements, but I don't think I would call it a dark story in general and definitely approachable for all YA ages.

Wings of Betrayal: The Faerie Rebel is an epic debut from author Brittany Wang!

First, I want to talk about the world building because it’s insanely amazing! It’s so unique and well-developed. I loved learning about each of the different clans and how they interacted. And I felt immersed in the world the entire time!

The plot was engaging and felt original. It was well paced too. I couldn’t put this book down! The plot twist in the middle was well executed and I didn’t see it coming at all. The writing style is intriguing and easy to read.

My only critique is that I didn’t feel fully connected with the main character, but I think that’s just because this is the first book in a serial. I can’t wait to learn more about her in the next installment.

The romance was everything! I already love Aeron and I can’t wait to see how their relationship progresses.

Overall, an awesome debut! Looking forward to episode 2!

3.5 stars.

A good and interesting start to this wildly imaginative series! The realm the author has creative is so inventive, rich and layered. I loved the different clans and how each Fae is responsible for an Ethos and have different types of wings.

The pacing is very rushed, and I feel like the internal dialogue matched that pace with Quinn's emotions making it very jarring, however I really liked the fact that she is flawed, understand her flaws trying to work on self and occasionally slips back into making the same mistakes because we've all done that, and I found Brittany made Quinn very relatable in this instance.

The plot is interesting and full of magic, I just wasn't as invested/engrossed as I normally am in reads I like but there is something there that I definitely want to continue and see where the journey goes!

Wings of Betrayal, the first episode in the On Wings of Ash and Dust serial, is an amazingly strong start sure to hook readers in! I was drawn to the world right away. The worldbuilding is incredible and I love the uniqueness of each of the faerie clans. Brittany's writing is strong and pulls you into the story from page one. This episode sets up Quinn-who she is, where she came from, and where she's going. & I did not see the betrayal coming :o
There's so much intrigue and so many secrets and I can't wait to read more!
Definitely loving Quinn and Aeron and I can't wait until we meet the other competitors and see how it all unfolds.

I was happily surprised by how quickly I was enthralled by this story!

Quinn is a daring, bold, clever, loyal, though sometimes rash heroine. When she discovers that she has magical powers and accidentally harms her twin brother, who is the opposite of her in every way, she leaves her life as a princess behind and begins her own life as a pirate and soon to be captain, notoriously known by the five faerie clans as Captain Shade. When a heist goes wrong and Quinn discovers the unfathomable truth that her beloved twin brother is dead, she takes on a task greater than she could have imagined: honoring her brother by fulfilling the role he was destined for.

This story had me captivated from beginning to end, and now that the first episode is finished, I am going to order the whole series and devour them all!

The world building, characters, and differences between the five faerie clans was so intriguing to me, and I am already in full support for one particular relationship, and am eager to see this relationship develop, as well as getting to know the other characters in the story.

This episode was a delightful surprise and I highly recommend for those looking for a fun, yet pull on the heartstrings, fantasy.

Wings of Betrayal - 3.25 ⭐

What a premise. I mean - pirate fairies. I just fell in love with the idea because (a) pirates are rarely the centre of books nowadays, and (b) fairies are my guilty pleasure. There were moments of brilliance in this book, and I was close to giving it 4 stars at some point, but I've decided that I'd be the critical voice here on the forum. Other reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, and the book is, in fact, very good, but I've noticed a few things that will eventually lead to problems for the author.

1. The work was not as polished as I wanted it to be. Just an example: on pages 39 - 40 I counted the word "as" over ten times. I got the impression the author was trying to use anaphora, but it didn't quite work. Instead, the repetition of the word annoyed me. A lot. Let's be real. Wings of Betrayal is no Shakespeare, and using literary devices in YA/fantasy is always a bad idea.

2. The length. I was utterly confused when I saw that the book only had 100 pages since I was so sure this was going to be a full-fledged novel. It would have made sense if Wings of Betrayal had been published as a "teaser" and the other episodes had been published as a whole, entire novel. I don't get why the author has decided to publish the parts as episodes, and, frankly, I don't like it. I don't go to Kindle Unlimited for short novels, I check out the Internet.

3. The length also plays a role in the writing. Sadly, a lot of the parts felt rushed because of the length. You're writing a badass pirate story and have made up all these new races, and then you don't work on the worldbuilding? Wings of Betrayal could have easily been 100 pages longer and it would have been utterly fantastic!

4. The love interest. Sorry, I just didn't buy it. I just recently bought a chair and was so torn between the colours "teal" and "emerald" that whenever I read of his "teal eyes" I was thinking of my chair. I doubt that will just be me. If you google the word, the majority of the pictures displaying objects seem to be furniture. So, teal = furniture.

Was I overly critical? Yes. I really liked the story and it pains me to see so many tiny mistakes. But that's what breaks our ankles as writers. We take our gift for granted, and we don't listen to people on the same journey. I'd love to see more of Brittany Wang's writing in the future - so, please, take your time, and reflect on your reviews.

Where do I start?!

From the world building to the distinct characters, it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact reason I rather enjoyed this first installment, Wings of Betrayal: The Faerie Rebel by Brittany Wang.

I guess I’ll try, ha.

We don’t even see everything that this world has to offer in this first episode, but the hints Wang weaves in gives us tantalizing glimpses of what’s to come (and she has done this masterfully)! My favorite aspect is toward the end of the episode, so I won’t spoil it here, but just know the ingenuity of the world building really kicks up a notch at that point in the story to set up the rest of the series! I feel like that was very cryptic, but once you read it, you’ll understand. 😊

The other part where this episode really shines would be the characters, and we aren’t even introduced to the entire cast (it’s a serial). Each new player in the story felt well-realized with their own backstory and motives. However, it is Quinn who I connected with most, which makes sense because we’re reading in her point of view. From the first line, we’re given an immediate sense of her character. Our heartstrings are pulled taut at the get-go, and with each successive chapter, we’re pulled into Quinn’s world and the many struggles she faces—internal and external.

The only thing I will say “against” this first episode is that I was disappointed it ended, ha. I’ll just have to wait until the next episode releases!

This is an impressive debut and I totally fell in love with the world and characters! Brittany really knows how to draw out Quinn's emotions and make you feel exactly what she is feeling. The worldbuilding in WoB is fantastic, down to the little details that make each faerie clan unique and how they interact with or feel about other clans. The pace was perfect as well- not too fast or too slow at any point. The end of every chapter just made me want to keep reading...I couldn't just end right there! haha I am definitely going to be sitting on the edge of my seat for the next installment- I NEED to know what happens next!!

I JUST finished this book like five minutes ago and I have to say I loved it! I wasn’t sure what I would think at first cause I’m usually not that big into epic fantasy stories but this one was awesome! I rooted for Quinn early on and wanted to see what happened next. Usually epic fantasy is filled with more world building than character focus but this one struck just the right balance.

My ONLY critique was I wanted MORE. More time with Quinn, more time in her homeland, more of the different cultures and societies in Faylan etc. I know this is a serial so I knew it would end before I wanted it too because there’s five more episodes coming but the ending of this made me want to read the next one now… Good thing it’s on preorder ;)

So happy to have received an ARC of Wings of Betrayal! I finished it in just a few hours and it's an exciting start to what is sure to be an incredible rest of the story. There's action, surprising betrayals, the beginnings of a possible romance, and lots of fun faerie culture. I am in love. It was so good! I couldn't stop reading! As a bookworm who can put down books easily, especially when I need to sleep, I was completely reluctant to pull away from it. I would write a longer review, but I just want to jump into the second episode. :)

14/3/22

This is one of the strongest openings I've ever read. It's been about three months since I first read this episode, and I still vividly remember the thoughts and feelings Quinn was experiencing. Her character and her motives were so clear within a few pages. I really felt like I was in her shoes, in her head, and nothing she did was surprising because I just knew her. I've read enough books to know that it is rare to feel that connected with the protagonist, even ones with first POVs, like this episode.

Since I was following the author on YouTube (which you guys should check out, it's a really cozy and friendly space), I knew a certain character was going to show up later on in this episode. Because of that, I was super excited about meeting him. And I have to say I was not disappointed! Not only was it delightful, it was surprising too. His first impression wasn't what I expected while also being what I expected. I quickly fell in love with him even when Quinn didn't. The more page time he had, the more I melted into a puddle of fangirling. He's so thoughtful, caring and complex. What is there not to love about him??

I love how we get Quinn's origin story right away. Generally, I feel like her kind of backstory would be kept a secret from readers and revealed slowly, but with so many other mysteries about the world itself it would have bogged down the story too much I think. Plus I believe that we as readers need to clearly understand where Quinn is coming from for both the plot and pacing to be the most concise. So, while it isn't the direction most modern writers would take, it definitely was the best choice for this story. I really enjoyed the experience of instantly relating to Quinn and not having questions about her.

I loved every moment with Quinn's crew! They really seem like such a found family, even though we didn't get to spend a lot of time with them. And with the reveal of the prejudices that the fairy clans have toward them because they didn't fit in, I felt that deepened their bond even more. Common experiences really do unite people despite how different they are to each other.

The worldbuilding was fantastic. I love how easy and clear it was to follow and understand the information about it. It quickly became so vivid and real to me. Settings generally don't jump out to me, but every single one in this episode did. I can still picture them in my head, remember how it made me and Quinn feel. I am in awe that this novella-size story created such an intimate connection between me and this world. I usually need a whole novel to be in love with a world and have some sort of connection with it. And honestly, I feel like I am still living in it even though I haven't read a single word since the end. It was so vivid that it now holds a space in my imagination, a place where I can visit it without the episode itself.

I also must mention how much I love this author's writing style! It's so simple and yet so descriptive! As a writer who enjoys writing a simple style, it was super encouraging to see if I continue to improve and strengthen it, it can be just as impactful as hers was. <3 <3 <3

I've read a lot of stories recently that I love. But this one is definitely on the top tier. I HIGHLY recommend it! Especially to those who love fairies, anti-heroes, magic, vivid worlds, cultures and character driven stories. I think it would perfect for you.

This is one of my new favourite books that I highly recommend to anyone who loves YA fantasy!! I have been so excited for this book ever since I first heard about it on Brittany’s authortube channel and I started reading it as soon as I downloaded it onto my kindle. It was absolutely stunning, like I had expected.

I immediately loved Quinn, the fairy pirate protagonist. You heard that right-she’s an epic fairy, but also a super fierce pirate!! She was so easy to sympathise with not only because of her backstory, but also because of the need to prove herself that I think was very relatable. I also loved the witty quips and how smoothly the writing flowed. It was so easy to fall into this magical world. I really loved the descriptive worldbuilding but of course, my favourite part of this story is how magical the fairy clans are.

There are five fairy clans in this serial (it’s like a tv show in book form) and they are so original. I just really really wish that I could actually go live in this magical world and be a fairy!! I actually took the quiz Brittany created on her website and I’m a Slyph. If you want to know what that’s all about, you should just go check out this book!!

I just adore the rich and immersive world Brittany Wang has created and I can’t wait to explore it more! Like I said, Wings of Betrayal is the first episode in a fantasy serial called On Wings of Ash and Dust and I can’t wait to continue on with Quinn’s story in part two.

If you haven't heard, Brittany made a soundtrack for this episode of her debut serial novel. She'll be sharing it on release day and I'm pretty sure you're gonna love it. As an ARC reader, I was lucky enough to get early access to it so that I could listen to it in tandem with the book. In fact, I'm listening to it now as I write this review and it is a constant reminder of how awesome this book is. It is definitely unique on so many levels.

With most debut novels, you can tell they're debut novels. However, I genuinely don't believe this to be the case with Wings of Betrayal. I fell in love with the main character Quinn from the moment she was introduced on page one. As a princess turned pirate, you can imagine how interesting a character she is. She's one of those characters who is so sure of who she is until she realizes that she doesn't know at all who she is. It makes her all the more relatable as she navigates a situation she never thought she'd be thrown into. Of course, none of this negates her feistiness - which is what really makes her so amazing to follow. I know this is only the beginning of her story, but I am more invested than ever to see how the events of the coming episodes unfold and how Quinn reacts to them all.

The main character isn't the only good thing about this book (though I could rave about her all day, I promise you). I've read a handful of books about faeries, but this one combines so many great elements that it hardly feels like a normal faerie world at all. Yes, it has the mythical elements you would expect, but it's more than that. There are so many different types of faeries, all unique in their own sense. And they're all competing and at each others throats. And amongst them all are the pirates who take advantage of the fighting for their own spoils. The world is so complex and in this first episode you just know that you're getting a glimpse through the window. There are so many more layers to come, I can feel it. It's exciting to know that as each chapter you read unfolds, you get a new piece of the puzzle. I can't name a lot of books where the setting feels just as important as the characters and the plot, but this is definitely one of them.

And if that isn't enough to make you pick up this book, there's a dangerous competition on the rise where all the fighting clans will go up against each other to gain the crown of all the faeries! This book is full of betrayal and duty and fighting and characters you're going to love. I can't wait to see what's next.

P.S. If you pick up this book (and I really think you should), keep an eye out for a certain Nymph prince. He's one of my favorite characters so far!

I'm giving this book a solid 5 stars. It's an excellent start to this serial and I'm greatly looking forward to Episode 2.

Novella/episode one of a fun fairy world!

I think others might feel more connected to the MC than I did, or perhaps other readers and myself would feel even more connected as the stories went on but it does promise a cool storyline!

SPOILER START:
the two characters I did connect with and was prepared to love either died (supposedly) or ended up being a traitor, which made me a little sad and quite grumpy (plus the dad being a jerk too...). I just want to see healthy relationships with family and friends or broken relationships that have hope of healing. I know that doesn't always happen in real life, but I think I've been missing it in stories and I think it can and should be more present.
It isn't just the protagonist who matters, the others matter too. They deserve life and redemption and life isn't perfect, but I believe they should have had a chance, just like the protagonist will have to grow and not just be there for the protagonist's conflict or pain--I feel that a lot in stories.
END SPOILER

There may have been minor language (can't quite remember). *thumbs up*

The action was cool!!

I am a review reader for the "Wings of Betrayal". Such a delight to read. I had a lot of fun reading this. The first chapter grabbed me in. Brittany was able to capture the feelings of the main character as well as her relationships with others in the clan. I love that she put a pirate aspect to all of this with Fairies. Not something I have previously seen. I was also intrigued and wanting more every step of the way, which is a hard thing to do, in my opinion. I can honestly say, it has been a long time since I've read prose that reach and touch me like this author's. Very enjoyable prose for sure. I look forward to reading much more of Brittany Wang's work.

What a good debut!!
Episode 1 for Of Wings of Ash and Dust, this takes you on a journey with Quinn, pirates, Fae clans, intriguing magic, and a deadly competition.
She's left me wanting more pirates and to know more about a certain creature ^_^

So excited for the rest of the world to read it! If you like Fae, pirates, magic and deadly competitions then you should definitely read this.
I love this take on the Fae and am looking forward to the rest!! :D

I adore this book! From the first few pages, I was hooked and needed to know more about these faeries and their world. The world building is unique; a fresh take on the fae. I enjoyed learning about the different clans and what they stand for and how they interact with the others. (Total Dryad here). Brittany has written a wonderful main character with quirks and flaws, someone you can’t help but want to follow along her journey. It’s going to be tough to wait for episode 2 to be published because I want to read more of this story!
