The Reign of Goddesses #1

Shadows and Vines

Rate this book
Everything you know about the gods of Ancient Greece is a lie.

Zeus.

Hades.

Poseidon.

They do not exist as you’ve been told.
For centuries, Persephone, the true Ruler of the Underworld, has watched humanity destroy themselves and the world around them. Known for centuries as her alter ego, Hades, she has guarded the souls under her care, her only interaction outside of her realm as C.E.O. of the largest financial company in the world, Cerberus Financial.

She is content with this, except a soul has called to her and her alone for thousands of years. One that she finds herself bound to in more ways than one.

Devon Aideonous was murdered, his killer unknown, his past as a mercenary haunting him in the afterlife. He is sent to the Underworld, but not as a soul meant to live out eternity there. He is something far more powerful, and the more he learns about his new power, the more secrets are uncovered from his past.

This is book one in the “Reign of Goddesses” series.

C.D. Britt began her writing journey when her husband told her she needed to use her excessive imagination to write stories as opposed to creating a daily narrative for him. Ever since she penned her first words, life has been a lot more peaceful for him.

She currently resides in Texas where she has yet to adapt to the heat. Her husband thrives in it, so unfortunately, they will not be relocating to colder climates anytime soon.

Their two young children would honestly complain either way.

When she is not in her writing cave (hiding from the sun), she enjoys ignoring the world as much as her children will allow with a good book, music, and vast amounts of coffee (until it’s time for wine).

C.D. Britt is the author of Shadows and Vines and the upcoming book, Sirens and Leviathans.
Both books are part of the Reign of Goddesses series.

ETA: Shadows and Vines will be free as of June 28th - July 2nd!

PHENOMENAL. This was PHENOMENAL. My life won't be complete until I see fan art of this book. It absolutely blew me away and now I need these characters to be honoured. I can’t believe that this is the author’s first book!!!

description

TW: Two witness accounts of gang rape are touched upon as well as filicide. They are not happening in the present.

Everything you know about the gods of Ancient Greece is a lie...

Zeus. Hades. Poseidon. We all know who they are - but what if we don't? What if that is only what they want you to think? (Hera is secretly laughing her ass of at what you think of Zeus). Because behind the scenes, there are three clever Goddesses who keep the world running without anyone ever knowing.

I love, love, love, the idea of the three Gods being GODDESSES. Seriously, why has no one thought of this before? I adore the concept and I adore C.D Britt’s execution. She provides a fabulous (well, traumatic) backstory for them.

The characters are all so well developed. It’s outstanding. There is literally nothing bad I could say. They are totally unique from each other with extremely well formed personalities and great dialogue. For example, we have:
➤ Reserved yet passionate Persephone
➤ Haunted yet determined Devon
➤ Ferocious yet protective Hera
➤ And of course, there is Thanatos – who is 1/3 hot, 1/3 humorous, and 1/3 skeleton
The first half of the book focuses on Devon adjusting to the Underworld, uncovering his traumatic past, and developing a relationship with Persephone. The second half of the book is much more action-focused as a threat to the Underworld must be dealt with. There’s a really good balance of plot/ romance and it is medium-paced.

C.D. Britt is the QUEEN of description. Honestly. She provides incredibly rich description without it ever being overly wordy. Everything is described wonderfully! The world, the characters, THE MAGIC. I was able to form a really good mental image of the scenery and the characters thanks to her beautiful writing. Wait until you see how Persephone and Devon are described in their God forms! You’ll understand why I need fan art.

Some people might not like that it’s written in third person but I’m here to reassure you that it’s done really well. The only constructive criticism I would have is that I think the romance could have had a slightly smoother development. It is really well done and I absolutely love Persephone x Devon, but there were times towards the beginning of the book where they were thinking “I can’t handle the attraction anymore!” and I was thinking “Calm the hell down, I can barely remember you mentioning this before now!” But maybe I just spaced out. Otherwise, it's perfection.

And that’s it from me. I am SO excited to continue this series. I get the impression that this is an author that's going to quickly improve and she doesn't even need to. I. CANNOT. WAIT. Thank you so much to the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

What if all the ancient greek gods you know aren't male but female? Meet Persephone, Hera and Amphitrite, the female equivalents of Hades, Zeus and Poseidon. In addition to this theme, I was also lured to this book by the cover which is really pretty and it made me curious about the story right away. But will the story be as nice as the cover?

What a delightful read. This book came as a surprise when I was scrolling through Amazon.
It tells the story of Persephone and Devon. We find out that Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon are alter egos to the sisters Hera, Persephone, and Amphitrite. Each are ruling their own realms and are affiliated with the human world. This is placed in a futuristic human society.

Since this is the first book, there is a good amount of info on the world and how it came to be.
The story to me was unique and I love the bond the sisters have with each other. There are titans, nymphs, goddesses, horsemen etc.

Its a delightful fantasy read with a slow burn romance, where both characters have gone through so much trauma and you see as their relationship grows, they learn to rely on each other when they feel their weakest.

I enjoyed Devon and Persephone as a couple and I'm looking forward to the next book!

If you think you knew about the greek mythology - think again!

The greek Gods are not Hades, Zeus and Poseidon. No.. Thats just a cover!

Its Persephone, Hera and Amphitrite!

And this book is about Persephone, the underworld and her human warrior Devon!

So many details that makes sense and follows through the whole book.

A book of finding out who you are, finding love for yourself and finding love for another one! A Journey with emotions, love and an upcoming war!

I cant wait for the next book to find out what happends! 🙏 😍

Who would have thought the underworld could be so vivid and rich and dare I say, vibrant? I always had a penchant for mythology, be it Greek or Nordic or any ancient legend but I was blown away on the different take on a well known myth! Take everything you know about Persephone and throw it out the window! Meet Persephone 2.0! This is a story of love and passion, of regret and redemption, of power and greed and inevitable war. The characters are diverse and interesting, especially Devon and West. The story started off strong and carried me off into a world of Greek gods, Titans and goddesses! A point of view that I found exhilarating and so diverse, not what I would have expected in a tale of well known Greek gods. A great plot and storyline with the ending leaving me fulfilled and eager for the next book

What if I told you that the goddess and queen of the underworld is Persephone and that Hades is just her alter ego, that she is a businesswoman who runs one of the most important financial companies in a world that has almost reached its extermination?

That's right, In Shadows and Vines by C.D Britt our beautiful Persephone, who is not a redhead as in all the stories, tales or myths we have been led to believe, is a queen goddess and CEO and runs Cerberus Financial in a dying world and, if you have a mental image about how the world may look like after wars, forest fires, global warming, etc, then you are not too far from reality.

Now, without wanting to do too many spoilers, I want to tell you what I thought of this book, which I received an advanced copy and I am very grateful to the author, as it has been an honor to be able to read it and meet Devon, my new literary love. I expected my favorite character to be Persephones, but no, it was, hands down, Devon and my second favorite was Tanatos. I really enjoyed the chemistry of these two, even though I thought they would kill each other at any moment.

To go into more detail, Devon's soul has been one that has always, at the end of her life, always met Persephon, whom she calls her beloved warrior, but then, the moment comes when reincarnation ends for Devon and the moiras panic, they cry and feel distressed at their beautiful thread of life coming to an end or shortened, but they assign him to Persephones, who must couple him to his new reality as a divine being, at first it was believed that he would be like Tanatos, in charge of guiding souls to the underworld, but, after putting his powers to the test, he turned out to be something else.

I have to say that I loved how Devon has not accepted his destiny or his reality as a non-human or non-mortal out of nowhere, as it has taken him time and several internal battles, but, above all, in my opinion, courage, because there is something ancient, dark and powerful inside him that wants to come to the surface, but, either he controls it or he himself learns to control it.

I didn't find it complicated to pick up the pace of the reading, as it has the right elements and details that keep you entertained and spectating and, although I feared the descriptions, as they tend to be heavy, although they help you understand the environment, certain places and characters, I didn't feel overloaded or lost, as they were fair and necessary descriptions, without getting boring or becoming just filler.

I loved the suspense and having no idea who might be up to something or who has murdered Devon ate my head off, as well as I found the jealousy and the way Devon behaved around Persephone adorable, although it became annoying to me later, until I finally understood why, but I didn't like how she was around him, as her vulnerability made me want to bite her, as I wanted her to remember who she was and drop the sentimentality.

I also loved the friendship that Persephone had with Hecate and Tanatos, the description of the Underworld and this new world that humanity has brought to ruin and in which Hera, Amphitrite and Persephone had to intervene to control it with their great enterprises. Among my favorite places are the Underworld, the palace of Persephon and the Island of the Blessed.

Ah, I can't forget Cerberus, I loved him in every appearance.

Finally, the appearances of other beings and gods, the version of how Cronus wanted to eliminate his children and other versions more, have left me speechless and I even liked more than everything I've read in Wikipedia hahaha, but above all, I liked the empowerment given to Hera, Amphitrite and Persephones, the wives that we all had understood that they were of the three main Olympians. So, if you want to enjoy Greek mythology with a different and new version, wanting to read each chapter until you find out what is going on and meet two souls who are destined to meet in spite of everything, then this book is definitely for you.

Thank you so much C.D Britt for such a beautiful story and for giving me one of my favorite books this year.

When I was little my dad had a book all about mythology from around the world. I used to read the Greek myth part over and over again. I was so drawn to the stories and the world of Gods and ancient hero’s. As an adult my love has only grown. So reading this book brought me back to those days. However with a different spin and I am here for it! Who run the world? The Goddesses! Sisters Hera, Persephone and Amphitrite. The first book in the series, Shadows and Vines focuses on the queen of the underworld Persephone. Thought I was gonna say Hades? That’s just Persephone alter ego. 😉 For centuries Persephone has guided and protected the souls of the underworld and all in her domaine. Meanwhile in the human world she runs Cerberus Financial in the city of Halcyon. She and her sisters have managed to keep the world running peacefully. But when the Moirai call Persephone for a meeting her fate becomes entangled with a soul who has called to hers for centuries. Her warrior. I absolutely loved this new take on the Greek myths and think it is an amazing story. Run, don’t walk, to get this book. I can’t wait for the next one! Thank you C.D. Britt for providing me with an arc of your wonderful book! Follo me on Instagram @annies_book_nook for more recommendations/reviews.

Shadows and Vines is such a unique take on Persephone and Hades! I loved how different it was compared to the other retellings I’ve read. It’s a medium paced book with enough action and romance to pull you in and keep you invested in the characters and their development. I especially enjoyed Thanatos and Hera throughout the book. They are hilarious and Thanatos is by far my favorite. I’m pretty sure I need all of the t-shirts that Thanatos and Hecate wore. I can’t wait to learn more about Amphitrite and Hera in the upcoming books in this series! (Fingers crossed for a spin-off with Thanatos??) I think the whole series has a lot of promise with this different spin on the Greek gods. You definitely won’t read another retelling like it!

This is a book perfect for those who love mythology! Also, the development of the characters is really beautiful and something to learn from. It's such a smart story, a bit unexpected with wise and interesting characters - love that!

The worldbuilding is amazing and I love how and when it takes place. So interesting! It's described in a way that makes it easy to imagine. For some reason I had the soundtrack from Disney's Hercules replaying in my head.

For me though the book is focusing too much on the characters and their evolvement, which leave little room for the plot to take place. Considering how it ended I belive the next book in the series will have more plot. Fingers crossed 🌟

Thank you for giving me this ARC ❤

I had no idea what I was getting into with this book and I loved every minute of it!

Hades, Zeus and Poseidon are alter egos for Persephone, Hera and Amphitrite. Persephone being the true ruler of the underworld was a fabulous way to tell this tale!  This book is a slow burn romance between Devon and Persephone. A story full of trauma and souls calling out to one another. Gods and Goddesses, even a snippet with Horsemen! 🙌

Also... Thanatos was hilarious! I hope we see more of him in the rest of the series. I'll definitely be reading the rest of this series!

3.75 ✨ I was given an ARC in exchange of an honest review.
I usually don’t like Urban Fantasy but surprisingly this book was filled with just the right amount of world building, action and romance. This book centred around Hades/Persephone retelling. It had a surprisingly fresh take and I absolutely loved it! The world building was excellent. I’m really excited to see Hera’s story. I absolutely loved her sassy personality.
If you love Greek Mythology you will love this fresh take on it.

This is a twist on greek mythology with a gender swap. Persephone and Devon are soulmates lost through time until the powers of the Underworld bring them back to each other. Devon is haunted by his past, but with Persephone's love, he finds redemption. Such a good book.

I really enjoyed this one. I thought I may confuse myself reading two Persephone stories at the same time, but they were so different, it was easy to keep them separate. Imagine all the male Greek gods are just fake alter-egos of their truly powerful female counterparts, yes please! I also appreciated the characteristics each goddess showed. Surprised by how few ratings these books have gotten. I hope they become more well known, because book one was original and very well written. Will start book 2 ASAP!

description

description

description

Este libro tiene romance pero no es erótico, por lo que la lectura es más juvenil.
También para la gente que le gusten los personajes buenos, nobles, sinceros desde un primer comienzo del libro y unos malos un poco blandos a mi gusto (la mayoría no todos)

"We make each other whole... stronger."

When people say classics, what do you think of? Most people would think of the books you read in your high school English classes. Well, those classics are not my cup of tea. Instead, I gravitate towards mythologies and Greek/Roman literature, things of that nature. Still classics, just in a different sense.

Shadows and Vines is inspired by the second one. Take everything you know, and forget it. C.D. Britt took traditional mythology and made it entirely her own.

Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon do not exist in this world but rather are the alter egos of Hera, Persephone, and Amphitrite, respectively.
"The gods you read about-Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades, the brothers who ruled the sky, sea, and the Underworld, were just our alter egos. Created to appease and help us work alongside humans."

Instead of being male rulers, it's a world ruled by females.
"The only powerful beings watching over you were Goddesses, which were my sisters and I. Kind of changes your perspective on the fairer sex, does it not?"

Shadows and Vines focuses on Persephone. She's the outcast. Lonely in the Underworld. The other demigods don't like her.
Then enters Devon. Persephone and Devon have this bond. Each reincarnation, at his death, she feels this pull to him and doesn't know why. But she's able to recognize him in each of his life.

Fate throws them together. There are hidden secrets in Devon's past that he uncovers. Powers within him that he must learn to help with a future predetermined.

I can't wait to read Sirens and Leviathans, the second book in The Reign of Goddesses, coming May 10, 2022.

Gender bent retelling of Hades and Persephone? Heck yes!! The blurb instantly got me hooked.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story! The originality of it, from how the myths got it wrong, to the characters involved, I loved it! The myths are included, but with a twist because Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades don't exist, but Hera, Amphitrite, and Persephone do. Persephone and Devon have a complicated history and "watching" them overcome their fears and growing as characters was positively delightful! They each have such heart, but neither of them wear it on their sleeves and sometimes need to be reminded that they are "people" too. Getting introduced to Hera and Amphitrite was fun and I look forward to their stories (I hope Devon can get some revenge on Hera for some of her antics!). The story flowed together well, and I liked the mystery unfolding.
This book sets up for the next one in the series and I am here for it! Because I really don't want the Titians to win!

I enjoyed the narrator! I'd listen to another book by her. She did have some of the same voices for other characters and it usually sounded a bit whispered/raspy and it wasn't bad, just not to my liking.

This story was very original and one of the best retellings of Greek myths I have ever read! I loved how most of the characters seemed so real! I loved Thanatos and Devons' bromance! I even liked Hera (which is a first), and I related to her as a sister. Also, I really ship Thanatos and Hecate!!!

12/7/24 I got to meet the author! She was so kind and thoughtful! She even signed my book for me!

Hecate has been in many of the books I've read, so here are my rankings of her character:
The Alchemyst
Shadows and Vines
The House of Hades
Witchcraft for Wayward Girls
Wraith of the Triple Goddess

If you liked this book, then I suggest:
The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series
The Daughter of Smoke and Bone series
The Bone Grace series
Belladonna
The Familiar
When Wishes Bleed
The Killer of Enemies series
The Final Six series
Death's Intern
Son of the Reaper
Dating and Dismemberment

This book was so different from other things I've read (and I read a lot).

This is a gender bent, Greek mythology reimagining and I loved every page.

I have read many Hades/Persephone retellings, and this one is close to the top of that list. In this telling Hades and Persephone are switched. Persephone is the god of the underworld who goes by the pseudonym Hades. She is drawn to a mortal soul for a long time. One day the fates send her to take care of a mortal who has passed that she needs to escort to the underworld. The mortal is the soul she has been drawn to, so she convinces him to eat some pomegranate seeds and become immortal and be tied to the underworld.

This was a book that I devoured and couldn't wait to keep reading when I had to stop. I finished this book a few days ago and haven't been able to stop thinking about it.

This is a new to me author that definitely has my attention now. This was unique, the reimagining of greek gods refreshing. In this book we have Devon and Persephone, and man do the sparks fly!!!!! I loved seeing Devon come into his own and the relationships that develops between the two. I can see myself rereading this :) It was a bit too descriptive at times and that slowed the pace for me. If this type of solid writing is what I can expect from this author then I will keep an eye on the release of her next audiobook.
If you like Greek Mythology and need something new and interesting I highly recommend you pick up a copy.
Savannah Gilmore as narrator was absolutely fantastic, she is Persephone for me

I loved this book! It's a unique spin on old mythology while also taking us into the future. It's a difficult battle between goddesses and titans. It's a beautiful tale of soulmates balancing each other out with the way they are different and yet have some of the same pain. Both need to heal, something they have to do for themselves with the knowledge they are loved by the other. This book kept me reading until the very end, thoroughly engrossed in their story. But the battle isn't over, there is still more to come, and more allies to find...and I can't wait to find out what's next in the story!

This series is going to be addictive! 🤩

This Greek mythology retelling is so much more than what we are used to read !
You take all you know about Hades, Zeus and Poseidon and you throw it out of the window 🙌

We've got powerful goddesses, ruling and protecting the world, new gods awakening to balance power, Titans threatening everything...

Do I need to say I loved Devon and Persephone? (And I hope we're going to see more of Thanatos in the next books !)

I just can't wait to read about West! He's intrigued me from the moment we met him !

And the epilogue only makes you want to buy the next one!

Read it !

Read. This. Book. This book is a twist on the Greek myth I didn't know I needed but need more of immediately!!! It's so much more than a Gender swapped Hades and Persephone retelling we are used to. This story was beautifully written, emotional, intense and just downright awesome!! Characters we know and love, but also some that aren't touched on alot in retellings blend together beautifully to make one HELL of a cliffhanger!!! Amazing, 10/10 all the good stuff!! Top 5 reads of the year for me!!

This retelling story of Hades and Persephone gives me role reversal vibes since in this one Persephone is actually the one in control of the Underworld and that Hades is just a cover she goes by. I did have my suspicion when the main guy she encounters has a little bit of Demeter's power and I thought he is maybe connected to her somehow, but I wasn't sure how until I read the story. Now I can't wait to read the rest of the stories to find out!

Great premise and okay storyline but the writing and dialogue is absolutely terrible. It sounds like a depressed edgy teenager wrote the books and made up what they think love is. Do not read if you can't stand bad writing. I finished the book to see what happens but am not even going to attempt the next 2 or 3.

Interesting take on Olympian gods.
There are no male gods, goddesses rule the underworld, seas and skies.

Little to no smut, there is soul mates but I feel like the book was focused on the world building and the three sisters.

I really did like the different twist on the mythology that I’m use too. The only reason I gave 4 stars was because it lost my interest about 3/4 of the way through but once I got past that it had a good ending.

This updated twist on some of our favorite Greek Myths is an interesting Adventure. What we think we know about the gods we’ve been told about aren’t always true here. Persephone and her sisters must keep the underworld safe while running companies as their day jobs.
