David Kirk is the creator of children's books that follow the character Miss Spider. Before writing books, he made colorful toys that were sold in hand-painted boxes. He was urged to write children's books when his toys caught the interest of a book packager. It wasn't difficult to figure out what he would use as characters in his stories: his daughter, Violet, had a liking for bugs.

I had to sample this series when I realized that 1) it is published by the same folks who do Madonna's books (eek!) and 2) this is apparently an extremely popular series. I thought it was okay, though I can certainly see it's appeal. Very bright illustrations, really fun and animated-feeling and, rhyming text and, well, it is about BUGS! Some children may be bothered by the fact that Little Miss Spider's mother is never found (did she die?!? not want her babies?!?) but the message is meant to be one of reassurance as Miss Spider learns that her true mother is the creature who loves and cares for her: "For finding your mother, there's one certain test. You must look for the creature that loves you the best." As I said, it's a very popular book but I would just exercise caution especially if your child is sensitive to "lost mommy" situations or adoption themes.

We really enjoyed the illustrations and the story of adoption, but it could be a bit scary for younger children because Little Miss Spider is abandoned by her mom and is almost eaten at a point.

Wow.. this hit on so many different levels. First and foremost, the graphics of the story remind me of a TV show I watched as a kid called "Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Friends". The little spider hatches out of her egg and wonders where her mother could be. She attempts to look for her, when she meets this beetle who i concerned for her safety. The beetle goes on the hunt with her and together they search for the little spider's mother. They can't seem to find her anywhere, so the beetle tells the spider to stay at her home with her. The ending page of the story says something very deep and true: "For finding your mother, there's one certain test. You must look for the creature who loves you the best". Wow... let's start off by saying that the poetry usage in this story was incredible and really complemented the complexity of the story. The most important thing I gained from reading this short story is that sometimes the one who is biologically related to you, may not always be the one who loves you best. I also got that for someone to be a parent, it doesn't mean you have to be their biological parents. Love is deeper than that.

Little Miss Spider is a story about a baby spider who has just hatched from her egg and is looking for her mother. She goes around searching for her mother and ends up meeting a beetle named Betty. Betty tries to help Miss Spider find her mother but in the end, Betty decides to adopt Miss Spider and take care of her herself.

The overall theme of Little Miss Spider is that people will live you no matter what. It doesn't matter how you look or what you do.

When I read this book, I felt connected with Little Miss Spider because I myself am adopted and my mother does not look like me. It made me really happy when Betty decided to take care of her in the end.

I would recommend this book to people because it shows that people will love you for the way you are even if you look different. This is a great book to use for children who are adopted because they will be able to relate to Miss Spider. I also believe that this is a great book for everyone because it shows that a family isn't just based on if someone looks like another person.

Growing up I watched Miss Spider on television. I also owned the books about her and the other characters in the show. I enjoyed this book. It teaches kids that it doesn't matter if you look different or are a different bug in this case. It has to do with love. Little Miss Spider was on a journey to find her mom because she didn't know where she went but a beetle started helping her. This beetle saved her and showed her love. This is a good story for maybe someone who is adopted or is going to through hard times in their family. It shows that you need people to love you and take care of you. Those who do that can be different from you. You just need to find the one who loves you best. The illustrations in this book were great. They were very detailed and colorful. The text went directly with the pictures and showed the whole story. I liked this book and have since I was a child. My mom used to read it to me. I think David Kirk is a great author and his books have great messages.

This book is so cute!!! It is a perfect book for families looking to teach their children about being adopted/adopted children. Also, this would be a good book for a small Mother's Day story time-the physical size of the book is good for holding and page turning, the illustrations are bright and engaging (will definitely carry to the back row!), and also there is rhyming! Always a plus for story time books :D

Little Miss Spider pops out of her egg to find her brothers and sisters around her but she can't find her mom. Betty Beetle is a sweet and kind beetle that eventually becomes like a mother role to the spider. Betty beetle adopts Little Miss Spider. It is a loving story about love and how even if you don't have biological parents in your life you can develop a loving family bond with other people and it is completely normal!

Excellent book! I was almost in tears as I read this children's book. It teaches a great life lesson about someone besides your biological mother taking care of you. The page I love the most says, "For finding your mother, there's one certain test. You must look for the creature who loves you the best.

I got this book because I remembering reading it as a kid, but forgot what it was about. I now remember what it is about and see a little education value in it, but more for a fun read. I thought it could be used to teach about insects or introduce to a science lesson. I think this would be a cute book to have in my classroom for students to read.

7/6/2018 ~~ Who is your mother? The one who loves you best. A lovely story about acceptance and family - you don't have to be biologically related to find the mother for you. This would be interesting to read this with children after reading Charlotte's Web. I kept wanting to tell Miss Spider that spider mothers don't stick around after they lay their egg sack.

Wonderful book that shows children that moms come in all shapes and colors, and that someone out there will always love you despite your differences or lack of "blood." Love how it is written very simple with rhyming and pictures so that it can be shared with children of all ages, and simple enough that at least the basic message is understood.

This book is about Little miss Spider is excited for school. When she was at school they did actives to try and see what they can do. The spider couldn't do anything so she felt useless. Towards the end, she went ahead and saved an animal who was stuck. The message is don't downplay yourself with things you can't do. Everyone has their own special skills.

I liked that this book had a rhyming theme to it. The illustrations were very nice and simple but with essential details. It had a really strong message at the end, how all bugs and students excel at different things.

This is a story about support and connection, though an adult reader may need to fill in some blanks about why Little Miss Spider's mom is missing. And the bird scene is actually harrowing. It can be a scary world out there! Good thing Beetle is looking out for Little Miss.

With Charlotte's Web firmly establishing in our childhood consciousness that spiders die when they lay their eggs, I'm not sure how well this plays.

A lovely adoption story. A single mom beetle adopts a baby🕷after they can't find her birth mom, because love makes one a mom too.

Quite enjoyed the solid text and heartwarming message but Kirk's illustrative style just doesn't appeal to me.
