Viking Omegaverse #2

Taming the Wolves

Rate this book
First I was dragged into a fort filled with cursed Vikings.

Now I'm to be used as bait.

To lure out the enemy with the scent of my heat.

And my only protectors are the very Vikings who dragged me here...

- - -

The world that Tamsin knows is on the brink of disaster.

Her kinswomen have been found. Their sanctuary lies open for the plunder, their military strength weakened by treachery. Poised to besiege them are the Vikings and Albans, joined together in a frightful alliance.

But Tamsin has already made a crack in that alliance.

After plotting the murder of her husband, she and her unlikely ally Thrain Mordsson must face the consequences together. The King of all Alba sends them on a perilous mission to make amends for their crime.

The mission is: to lure a dangerous Pictish warlord into a trap.

And to kill him.

Tamsin must work together with Thrain Mordsson and his brothers to accomplish her task. And while she knows she can trust Thrain, his brothers are still strangers to her. To succeed, they must learn to trust one another along the way.

And Tamsin will discover what she’s truly capable of, once danger arises under the full moon...

--

This is the second tome of Thrain & Tamsin’s story. In this new omegaverse series, kingdoms break apart and ancient magic is rediscovered. If you like your romance with a plotty medieval backdrop like Kushiel’s Dart or Game of Thrones, you’ll love this series.

TAMING THE WOLVES is a fantasy non-shifter omegaverse romance that is based loosely on real historical events. It is the second tome of a 6-book saga, slow-burn with Reverse Harem romance. Though there are recaps of previous events, it is not meant to be read as a standalone. This novel contains graphic depictions of violence, and ends on a cliffhanger.

Reread 7/12/2023 in prep for The Summer Siege

Thoughts upon reread:

The largest criticism this book has received is that it's longer than book 1 and slower-paced. Upon my reread yes, the pace dragged in certain sections but overall the epic scale of the plot and the continuation of intricate world-building kept me hooked. The prose is simply gorgeous throughout.

To put it in perspective book 1 is 90k words while this book is 223K words. So, if you're an avid reader who can finish a book in 1-2 days and you're wondering why this book is taking you longer? That's why. This book showcased the author's talent for writing epic fantasy, on par with Jacqueline Carey. So if you're a fan of Kushiel's Legacy and you're also interested in omegaverse? This is your series.

~original review~

This book is awesome because we get more Ivar. I'm getting slight Alex Høgh Andersen vibes from Vikings (except slightly less insane, violent, & manipulative) and I'm into it.

Excited to see him in battle in the next book. Not gonna lie I'm sad he shares Tamsin second to Thrain, he deserves his own woman. Hope he and Tamsin's relationship develops more in the future. There's potential there. He's a good foil to Thrain.

Another reason this book is awesome: Tamsin goes full on Daenerys Targaryen

Not exactly this, but in spirit.

The writing was beautiful. A few of my favorite quotes:

While the plot is interesting and really well developed, it was almost unbearably slow. Plot-wise and character development-wise, every time the was a hint of progression, that’s all it is, a hint. This is almost 800 pages and everything that happened could have been trimmed down to maybe 200 pages. I’m all for well developed plots, but I need something interesting happening to keep me in it.

I am someone who likes character driven books over heavy plots so for me, there wasn’t enough happening character wise either. A few more spicy scenes but I feel like the main characters still barely know each other. There are a lot of times where their relationship is close to getting somewhere but it never quite makes any progress. They may briefly touch on a serious topic or something that would bring them closer but then they switch to a lighter topic. We also start to see the why-choose part of this relationship but it’s so small even a mouse would consider them breadcrumbs. Again, for such a long book, it is just way too slow for me.

The world-building from book one really pays off here—the setting feels richer, the stakes higher, and the vibes? Immaculately chaotic.

I loved how real historical elements were woven into all the spicy, growly drama. It’s like getting seduced and educated at the same time. A few slower moments kept it from being a full 5 stars, but overall, it's a really beautiful book.

(Also, if your husband’s name happens to be Thor—which mine is—do yourself a favor and read this book. There’s a moment where someone yells “By Thor’s almighty cock!” and I ascended. I was crying. I was wheezing. Literature peaked.)

It was a slow start, but once you get past the first 14% it does pick up. Before this point, the characters spend a lot of time alone reflecting on the events of the last book.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I prefer more character interactions. At 14% the two characters reunite and this recaptured my interest again.

Thrain was such a great character in the last book and this book was no different. In public, he was naturally protective and then when they were alone he was very sweet & said the most quotable things ♥️ He was always so considerate of her feelings and put her best interest above his needs. The last book was very light with the spice. This book was very … seasoned 🌶️😂

This author is great at writing these really cute, tender moments between characters that are so disgusting sweet, in the best way !!!

The harem in this book wasn’t fully formed. It’s a fast burn with some characters and a slow burn with others. E.g. One of the MMCs lost his wife and wasn’t ready to be involved with the FMC. His boundaries were respected and even though they interacted nothing romantic happened. In most books, characters usually cave after making these grand statements, but this was not the case.

I did like the FMC in this book, but she was very naive at points. If there is a war raging around you and you can’t fight, STAY in the goddamn carriage 😑 The other characters seemed to always have to keep an eye out, as she rarely listened. That was a little annoying. She was only 18 though and didn’t have a lot of exposure to the outside world, so maybe that’s it.

The phrase I most commonly associate (and history associates) with Vikings is ‘r**e and pillage’, so I was a little apprehensive to go into this book (and the first book), as I didn’t know how women would be treated. In comparison to book 1, in this book, the FMC was completely immersed in the Viking's world 🔪However, in terms of respect the Vikings weren’t the issue, it was more so their allies. The FMC was commonly called a whore (because of bulls**t assumptions) and the Albans felt entitled to say inappropriate things to her. Despite this behaviour, no darker triggers seem to occur.

Overall I would give this a 3. I liked a lot of the book, but it is pretty long .. or it just felt very long. On the last 20 %, I did I skim the chapters. It wasn’t holding my attention throughout like the first book had.

Re-read 2024, this time in audio format. I highly recommend the audiobooks, the narrators are doing a great job making this story more real than ever.

---------

It's a very good series. Well written. Attention to detail. Character development. Real feelings. Actions and consequences.

I will probably read book 3 on release day!

Having enjoyed the previous book I happily skipped straight to this one. Expectations were high, maybe too high.

The thing is it’s well written and detailed. So so very very detailed. But honestly it was like wading through treacle. After about 5 days (bearing in mind I usually read a book in 2-3 days) I just didn’t seem to be getting any further. It’s painstakingly slow even with skimming bits I was struggling just to get through it. And it got to the point where reading was becoming a chore. I should have just quit I know. In fact I should have quit a couple of days in. But the thing was I felt invested and I wanted to know what happened. I liked the characters and the story but reading is my passion (sorry hubby) and when I’m putting it off it isn’t good. So even though I’d like to see it though I won’t be reading the next book.

Rating is more difficult.

Because it’s well written with good interesting characters etc. It probably really deserves a 3/4* rating. But then I struggled (nearly dnf’d several times) and it’s taken me a week just to get through it meaning it would get 1* rating but the book is better than that.

I am super happy to report that this book is just as good as the first one. Thrain is really just the most swoony MMC! Ugh! I won't give a lot of details, because that would spoil the first book, but there is so much character growth for Tamsin... she is still naive (I forget shes only 18!) but you can see a clear growth on her part. There is a lot of religious shame in this book, because the way that Tamsin was raised to see her kind. Its a lot for her to try and overcome.

We do finally get to see a little more of the 'why choose' in this one... with characters you assume and hints to some you may not...? So that's interesting. Also, if you were bummed about the lack of spice in book one, well let me tell you... lol, this one makes up for it. Aside from all that though, the story...the fantasy elements... the history and the way the author just melds all this together is just so good. I really wanted to just take my time and read this, its such a beautiful story.

Holy shit I’m loving this series. So much! I have to gather some thoughts to put here but just know this: took me four days to read this book because I didn’t want to miss a single word of its 630ish pages. 💜💜

You guys, this series is crazy good. The writing, the characters, the everything is just top-notch. I'm 60% through this second book and I'm literally screaming with how good everything is. Also the author does her own cover art! How cool is that? Especially when it's this beautiful!

Update 4/20/2023

I really enjoyed this book. The world building, the plot, the characters, the everything was just *chef's kiss*. Uradech was my absolute favorite for the few pages that he was in this book. He was clever and a perfect foil for Causantin. I will be eager to see how Uradech takes Causantin down. After this book I am eager to see Causantin be taken down a peg after how he treated the Wolves of Dublin and Tamsin.

I also can't wait to see how the romance develops between her, Ivar, Olaf and Thrain (and possibly Uradech, maybe, please). I'm really hoping that each guy gets equal time with Tamsin in the next book and none of them end up being side-pieces. If they get their own POVs in the next book that would be great too.

I think some people may have a hard time with this book and how the author writes in general, because the plot can be a bit slow at times due to the highly detailed way the author writes. I however, enjoy descriptive, plot heavy books, so it didn't bother me. The romance and smut was really well written in this book too, so if you're still looking for all three: plot, romance, and smut, you do get it all in this book.

Just as a heads up there are MM scenes in this book, but it added to the plot and made sense with the sex positive culture that the Vikings have in this world. Based off of this scene it looks like this series will become more so a MMFM, rather than a true reverse harem. It makes sense with the plot, characters and the world, so it didn't bother me at all. I just wanted to give a heads up to whoever potentially wants to read this series. I really enjoy how sex positive the Viking culture is in this book, with the focus being on a person's sexuality and body isn't something to feel bad about, but celebrated. That people don't have to feel judged based off of their sexual preference or identity.

I need book 3 like right now. I have heard mixed things on when Book 3 is coming out. I went on the authors social media pages and it seems like Book 3 was mostly completed as of July 2022, sitting at around 800 pages or so. I noticed that the author also started a final round of edits in December 2022, so the book most likely looks like it will be released sometime between now and Fall of 2023. I'm betting on that it will be released some time this summer as it would make the most sense with the title being "The Summer Siege". That book's cover looks crazy cool too. Again very excited. I love this series.

One side note (if anyone is interested): this is technically an age-gap romance as well. With Tamsin being 18, Thrain 27, Ivar early to mid 30's, and Olaf mid to late 30's. This was one of those blink and it's gone details, so I am writing it down so I can remember too.

The writing and editing of the ARC version of the manuscript was clean, with no typos and beautiful sentence structure. I also appreciated the length of this novel, though I will admit it was a little flabby. The world building was vivid, with the cultures of the Vikings, the Albans, and the Pictish tribes coming to life. I also appreciated that the nature of Vanirdottir was being slowly revealed to the heroine and the reader at the same time. The development of the romantic relationship was slow, but had a sizzling payoff before I got too frustrated with the slow burn. This novel had a heat level of three chili peppers. The plot was intricate and tight. I really enjoy how plot heavy this romance series has been. The pacing has been a little slow due to the novel being a little flabby, but I was still engrossed in the story. This novel contained a medium amount of well justified angst and high stakes throughout, which tends to be one of my preferred narrative structures for a romance novel. This novel used the Enemies to Lovers trope, a variation on the Woman Shortage trope, and the Mating Bond trope. The world building, plot, and pacing were all five stars. The characterization and development of the romantic relationship were both also five stars. My only caveat was the fact that some of the length could have been trimmed to tighten up the pacing. I therefore gave this novel a combined rating of five stars. This novel ended on a little bit of a cliffhanger, but not too bad of one. I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy fantasy or alternate history elements in their omegaverse romances. I look forward to reading the next book in this series when it releases. I will probably buy myself keeper copies of this whole series if they continue improving with each book.

I received a free advance review copy of this book, and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Mmmmmm so this is actually extremely well written, especially for its genre and being on KU. But it’s just so. freaking. slow. Both the first and second books are hard to get into because they’re so slow and nestled into politics and nothing else, and it goes on about the same pointless drivel for so long. The first book definitely lead me to believe we’d just have more connection between our two main characters than we got. All we really got this book was smut, and the same repetitive smut at that.

Awesome Historical/Paranormal Romance

At first, I was turned off by the book cover, and only gave them a try based on the recommendation of one of my favorite authors. The first chapter of the first book, again had to force my way through it. And not, am I glad I did. I was hooked. Still am hooked. I love omegaverse, historical novels, steamy smut, and this encompasses all of that along with a compelling storyline. Well-written, vivid world and a wonderful main female character. Can't wait for the next book.

Stolen by the Wolves, book 1 in this series, was a phenomenal read for me earlier this year and I've been excitedly waiting for book 2. The wait for Taming the Wolves and the exciting build up to actually getting to read it had a huge pay-off because this book is somehow even better than the first one. The continued depth and layers of the world-building (both historical and omegaverse elements), richness of all the characters (main/side; good/bad), the weaving of political intrigue and danger, and the deepening emotional connection of characters (in spite of the conflict/worries surrounding them). Plus, the slow burn of book 1 has boiled over into fantastically well-written steamy scenes. Overall, I was immersed in Taming the Wolves and could barely put it down.

Tamsin continued to be a FMC that I want to cheer for and hug. She's learning about herself, her capabilities, and her place in an unexpected circumstance. In addition to being young and unused to war, there are sides to herself as a Vanirdottir that she's never experienced before due to her upbringing and culture. As many pains as she experiences navigating her way and adjusting, she also blooms in many other ways. I also love that we continue to see her relationship with her twin and how that's having to change somewhat as they're each growing in different ways. I'm looking forward to continuing to see her grow in this series, especially as she gains more confidence in who/what she is.

The men, or Vyrgen, are spectacular. I adored Thrain in book 1 and he continues to be major book boyfriend material beyond just the fact that he's a Viking. We learn more about him in this book but there are still some aspects of him that are reserved. What's not reserved is his devotion to Tamsin and as much as he struggles with her position among enemies and what's brought them together, there's so much rightness of them being with each other. We also see more of Ivar and Olaf and there seems to be more to come there. There's also an introduction to a new character who I'm very much hoping will play a role in the rest of the series on a more personal level because I'm intrigued with what we saw. I'm loving the slow build nature of this reverse harem and the degree of relationship building that's happening because of it. I'm especially curious how bonding and pack dynamics will come into play in future books.

In terms of plot, there are major events in play, not just the battle plans of the Vikings, but also stealthier plans regarding other enemies. We get some violent fight scenes, some more intense moon affected scenes (there are m/m scenes in this book, but not with a current love interest, just fyi), moments of camaraderie, and amazing romance. Taming the Wolves does end on a cliffhanger, but it's more of an "oh what possibilities are coming next" sense of worry for the characters cliffhanger.

Omegaverse romances eat up all my patience leaving me nothing for an actual plot, I've discovered. And these books are all plot. So much plot that I was actually groaning. It took over half of this book for them to get together. That's a book and a half of me trying to reign in how much sex actually matters to me in a book that boasts not only omegaverse but reverse harem.

We have one brother half feral and then another being pulled away by the third for some fucking reason. A book and a half... at least two need to ha e already gotten hot and heavy. There. I said it. I hate myself for saying this but I cannot bring myself to care about the plot as much as this author is pushing me to. It's dense and obviously well thought about and just not what I want from a omegaverse reverse harem.

IM HORNY AND I JUST WANT TO D ROBINSON.

To me, it's a lot like how I go in when I'm looking for ao3 tags. I click all these tags and I obviously have expectations when I go in to them. Books can have a plot when they have these specific tags but it needs to be balanced, in my opinion, or else you're making promises that you're not keeping. The reverse harem has not happened yet. The omegaverse is introduced but the intiation of that doesn't happen until much later.

Basically, like I said before, you need to know that this is a high fantasy book with a side story of romance.

This book is outrageously good. It's somewhere around the 220k word mark, but I flew through it — at no point did I feel like the plot dragged or any of the scenes were superfluous. Considering this is a slow burn, slow build harem series set over six books, that is an incredible feat that speaks to Lyx's world-building skills. I felt so immersed in Tamsin's universe. The amount of research that has clearly gone into this series from mythology to fashion to the logistics of travel is absolutely mindblowing.

I can't put into words how much I loved these characters and the budding relationships between them. If you love omegaverse or high fantasy, you will love this series.

4,5 'Mating mark' stars

He leans his forehead against mine, his eyes glinting red.
“Fuck me,” he commands. “Before you drive me insane.”
I smile at him. “Are you begging, Thrain Mordsson?”
He bites down hard on my lower lip. Another sweet sting of pain erupts, and I can feel blood trickling down my chin. The coppery taste sends a bolt of delight through me.
“I will throw you down onto the grass if you don’t,” he whispers.
“I wouldn’t protest that,” I tease him, and he gives a needy, impatient groan.

❤️ We finally got Tamsin and Thrain together - heaths, and ruts, and mating marks included! They are such an amazing couple, now that they are officially together.
🌕 It was worth waiting one whole book for the smut because it definiteley delivered.
🌔 I'm glad that Tamsin got a chance to discover and explore her powers. I'm looking forward to power boost her pack like that.
🌖 I'm very excited for the deeper bond between Tamsin and Ivar, and considering the cover of the next book, we're about to get it. The "preview" was absolutely delicious.
🐺 I hope we'll get to see more of Rhun in the following books. Also, can we get another pov, so that we'll be able to see anyhing happen between him and Nýr. I get Tamsin wouldn't want to be present and Thrain is apparently not interested. So maybe, Ivar, I'm sure he wouldn't mind watching, haha.
⚔️ The only complain I have is that this was way too long, especially considering that the whole book takes only three weeks span.

“It means darling,” I mutter into his hair. “Love, sweetheart, that sort of thing.”
He hums his appreciation, then draws up to face me again. To think I would call this gruff scarred Viking sweetheart. But that’s what he is; the fact that he’s being so patient with me is a testament to that.
“Well then, cariad… would you do something for me?”

*screaming from the rooftops* THIS SERIES IS ONE OF THE BEST I’VE EVER READ, BAR NONE, AND IT JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER AND BETTER.

check out my deeply passionate review of book one here, as this is book two of an ongoing, incomplete series.

before you hit the add to TBR button based on the first line alone, i must add some important disclaimers, because i recognize that not everybody is as feral for a historically accurate, sloooooow burn, eventual why choose omegaverse the way i am. so if you don’t like really long books, heavy viking history (with all of the TWs!), why choose stories, or omegaverse elements turn you off, then skip right past this because i simply do not have the emotional strength to endure even one (1) criticism of these books.

this one is even better than the first one, as we’re more familiar with the characters, and get to read the slow, delicate unraveling of the characters and their backstories – sweet thrain, legendary viking warrior who is desperate to do the right thing by tamsin and her people – a highly protected community of omega women – after kidnapping her and her cousin. recuperating from the betrayal from book one, tamsin is in enemy territory, forced to rely on her captors for protection and desperate to save her people from a similar fate.

IT’S JUST SO GOOD. SO GOOD. and the historical elements are once again excellently researched (PICTS!!!!!!!!!), the omegaverse elements are built into the plot so perfectly that it doesn’t feel like your everyday average omegaverse (i said this in my first review but i do believe if there was ever an omegaverse series that would make someone on the fence an enthusiastic omegaverse fan, it’s this one!!!!), and the characters, writing, romance, and plot are all 5 star perfection. AND THERE’S SMUT IN THIS ONE, Y’ALL. FINALLY.

i adore this book. i adore this series. i would walk on hot coals for lyx robinson because the level of detail, care, and wit that she writes with FEEDS SOMETHING FUNDAMENTAL IN MY SOUL.

i genuinely and passionately believe this is the perfect book – especially for me, and the other equally feral history nerds who can appreciate the delicate agony of a slow burn. this is absolutely my ‘stuck on a deserted island with a book’ series. bury me with it!!!!!

After Stolen by the Wolves i was véry glad i had enough time to dive straight into Taming the Wolves.
Because i needed more,and i got A LOT MORE!
And i couldn’t stop reading, couldn’t focus on anything but what Tamsin and her Vyrgen went through…they’d taken over, completely!
Having the ARC of Taming the Wolves really was a blessing…..until i reached the final page.
Finding that cliffhanger left me with a need to turn another page, and finding none…
So now i can only hope Summer Siege will arrive before i lose my mind……please,Lyx???

The growth Tamsin goes through emotionally is a sight to behold.
From a princess raised by prude Christians, she grows into the Vanirdottir she was always meant to be.
Embracing her true self takes time and patience, and she has the perfect men to help her do just that.
Not only does she grow very close to Thrain, his brothers embrace her as well.
They become her pack, her family, and with them their men.
And her twinbrother Rhun….he experiences his own growth too, helped by Orokia, his guardian.

They both need this new family badly when King Causantin sends them on a dangerous mission, but promises to come to their aid at their signal.
The enemy they’re sent to defeat is not what they expect, though…
And the knowledge their leader Uradech shares with her?
Thát brings forth a chain of events that will change their lives forever.
With the full knowledge of what a Vanirdottir can do,what she can be,they know capturing them is not the right thing to do.
Convincing the Viking King, the chieftains and the Jarls is another matter, though….

After all the teasing and playing,i was véry happy to see Tamsin and Thrain fully claim eachother.
It was a thing of beauty, and they were more than ready for it!
All they need now,is for Olaf and Ivar to accept their feelings too….
But first, there is another, very important task they have to fulfill, and that is going to happen in Summer Siege.
And i can’t wait!!!

There is a je ne sais quoi to Robinson's world building that reminds me almost of Ursula K. Le Guin (big statement but I was sitting here trying to think what I would compare this to and... LeGuin immediately popped into my head). The reader finds themselves in a world wholly mythical and wondrous with each page revealing more and more about the characters, politics, etc. Such is the detail and skill in the world building that this book really should be sitting firmly within fantasy... but with the love story taking a central role, this book beautifully bridges fantasy and romance giving us equal amounts of both.

Then you have the romance! The omegaverse! If you weren't convinced by the first book that historical, viking omegaverse would be your thing, then Taming the Wolves will set you straight. Every part of this combination sings to my heart. The omegaverse mythology is unique and beautiful, and after a slow start in book one THE ROMANCE WILL SET YOUR PANTIES A LIGHT. This is Michelin star steam but never once gratuitous as it can be in omegaverse.

There is a cliffhanger as a warning but it whets the appetite rather than inducing a groan of frustration.

I want to conclude with the disclaimer that I wish I had re-read Stolen by the Wolves before starting Taming the Wolves because there is such an immediacy to the beginning (which I loved) that I wanted to relieve the ending of the first book in the series. When the next instalment arrives, I will make sure I set aside time to re-read first two.

*Spoiler*Also a steamier entry than the first one with many hints to the surely soon to grow harem.

(does it count as a spoiler when the first book's synopsis says this will be a reverse harem eventually by the end of the series? I guess other kind of spoilers render this question moot though, alas.)

One of my favorite Omegaverse tropes is when the typical power structures are either inversed or equalized and the worldbuilding here definitely hits the latter and arguably the former, and I could not be more thrilled. Seeing Tamsin come more into who she is and learning the truth about what the omegas in their world can be and what they can do is one hell of a journey. God, we're only a third of the way into the planned series? So much more room to grow and I cannot wait to see more.

I also really liked how we got more of the main cast, especially of Thrain's brothers this time around. We didn't get a whole lot of them in the first book, so getting to know them better is great. And even without inner dialogue for some characters like Rhun and Eormen, I can already see their growth starting (Rhun moreso because we get substantial time for him), and I personally find good side characters just as important as good main characters, an excellent sign for the series going forward.

Oh, and the end notes where the author specifies where various historical references was just a lovely cherry on the cake bc I am a nerd and stuff like that makes me happy.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I read the first few pages and walked away to make myself a cup of coffee Lyx Robinson's writing is that good.

For a sophomore novel, Taming of the Wolves doesn't stumble or trip but picks up the gauntlet thrown by Stolen by the Wolves and... Good Golly Miss Molly does it deliver.

This isn't some pretty window dressing world building that you see in a lot of fantasy (both self, indie, and traditionally published). Rather, the depth of research and care taken to tell this story is an example of a master craftswomanship. We are being told a story on an epic scale and it is meant to be savoured. Especially because at a whopping 200,000+ words you will need to spread your reading out or risk becoming consumed by this world.

I highly recommend to everyone who reads fantasy and also wants romance. or who reads romance and also wants fantasy.

I’m calling it here. This book has taken me a month - ONE WHOLE MONTH - to try and get through and it’s just not happening. Similar to the first book, this sequel is very detailed and intense. My biggest issue is that the book is too drawn out. Yes, the writing is beautiful, but there were many scenes on this book that could have been removed to help speed up the plot. It reads like the Sunday paper: slow, tedious, and every now and then with some drama. I’m throwing in the towel and calling it here. While I won’t continue with this series, I did love this authors ability to craft an amazing world, so I would give her next series a shot!

i can’t explain how much i actually enjoyed this book because I just absolutely loved it.

Everything from the story to the characters and the romance is just perfect. All the aspects of omegaverse, vikings, historical and norse mythological retelling are so well developed and written.

This has become my favorite omegaverse series without a doubt and if you’re a fan of it or it’s your first time reading and you have no problem with multiple partners then i strongly recommend you try this out!

i can’t wait for book three🥹

Lyx Robinson's world building is pure artistry at this point. The conflicts, the desires, the push and pull of two different cultures are all layered deeply but fluidly in Taming of the Wolves. Every nuance is explored, analyzed, and put back into its rightful place. And the steam.....the STEAM....was so worth the wait. I am so hopelessly in love with this OV world, much like Tamsin and her Wolves of Dublin. I would gladly go into battle to find a Viking of my own!

Definitely slower, longer and better than the 1st one (for me). 4.5 stars, I really enjoyed getting to know Thrain, Ivar and Olaf. Tamsin grew on me as she is growing up herself. There are beautiful moments in this book, the author is very talented, and I am happy to continue with these long-ass books :)

Tamsin is dealing with the death of her husband and throwing her lot in with the Vikings:
"Looking up, I find a wooden cross set high on the far wall of the chapel. The words from countless catechisms press into my mind as though God Himself were reminding me of them. In sorrow shalt thou bring forth children, and thou shalt be under thy husband’s power, and he shall have dominion over thee. Except my husband lies underneath the cross, his innards strewn hither and thither in buckets and pots, because I willed it so."

She has an irresistible scent that makes her vulnerable so she needs protection. She also LIKES Thrain so that helps this whole premise. I am happy to be able to read Thrain's POV, it really helps connect with him. And Lyx writes these men so well!
“Why not? You said it yourself. Tamsin is your ward. You aren’t courting her.”
He asks it as though he already knows the answer, as though he just wants to wheedle it out of me. The admittance that I want her with every fibre of my being. I stare up at the stars, wishing sleep would take me so I could stop thinking about this. Even with my rut crushed to naught by the drink, my mind keeps coming back around to her. I mutter the words into my horn as I drain the last drops: “I don’t want to dull the memory of her.”
Olaf says nothing. Then he lays a hand on my shoulder and squeezes it in companionable silence. "
------------
“Never thought I’d hear those words from Thrain Mordsson,” she says.
I stand a little straighter still. “I never thought I’d speak them to a Briton princess. But here we are.”
“Yes,” she murmurs wonderingly. “Here we are.”
------------
“I’m your guardian,” I tell her instead. “It would be best if we did not complicate the relationship.” She affords me a wry smile. “You say that as if it weren’t complicated already.”

Tamsin has a moment of INSANITY but I see why the author did this- it moves along the RH side of things:
"I push myself up. It must be approaching midnight if I’m getting this mad and desperate and groggy. But it’s such a relief to consider getting out of here and going where the people are. Maybe I could just… just take a look." NUTS I tell you...
------------
“Tamsin.”
God, the sound of my name in his mouth, the way he makes a wanton sigh of it – “You only asked me for release.”
“Well I was an idiot.”

There are lots of intimate scenes, slowly building to consummation. Feast nights, orgies, you know- that kind of thing. Its the heat I tell you.

We get a slow story of their prep and are introduced to a horse and the genial men:
"Gradually the perimetre collapses now that Alsvithr has been tamed, the Vikings going back to their own preparations.
The Alban captains call sarcastically from their side of the courtyard – what’s the body count over there? – and the Vikings call back in good cheer."

My FAVORITE part? 5 stars just for this scene! When they were getting ready to leave and the Alban men were so horrible to her:
They shout now to recover their pride: “Go back to your cursed men, whore!” “Only the devil would have you anyway!”
She yells right back, “When you die I will shit on your graves!”

Thrain and Co. still trying to figure her out:
"Ivar ignores his elder brother and turns to me. “Were you lucid, Thrain? Did she command you to go riding out into the forest at midnight?”
“She did not need to command me,” I grunt. “I do all manner of stupid things whilst being perfectly lucid, as you know.”
Ivar laughs at that. “Well, I can’t argue with that.”

The Picts were interesting as well as Uvaedor (sp? I have forgotten). He seems VERY promising, lol.

Tamsin and Rhun make a run for it and Thrain is mad:
"Somewhere along the way, I must’ve let myself nurture some foolish hope. I let myself get lulled by the impression that there was something more between us.
That’s why it hurt when she ran. I thought I was being strict and orderly, when in actual fact I started believing she was mine in more ways than just my ward.
I started believing she cared for me."

It all unfolds until they realize a love for each other and decide to "claim" each other:
"I’m growing steadily more panicked as we follow my Cathalain guardians. It’ll be fine, it’ll be fine.
I’m just going out to the gardens, where Thrain awaits me with his brothers and the Dubliners. Our pack. Then, after some dancing and drink and merriment… we will be led naturally into the claiming.
That’s all. It’s going to be like a ritual ceremony. Not a mindless orgy. A ceremony."

The end of the story gently segues into the next, with the story going full circle. From the hold of the ship to the hold of the ship. And on to the siege!

One item to pick at was how quickly Tamsin started nesting- they hadn't had sex very long and she is already showing pregnancy signs, seemed too soon? But once again- I see why for the story line...

Worth it! The world-building is solid. The writing has improved. I found Tamsin (FMC) much more likeable in this one. The MMCs are still likeable. In general, Robinson is great at creating a cast of characters that feel fully-developed and individualized.

The pacing is a little off maybe. The first half of the book is very plot-heavy, and maybe a little too drawn out. The second half is like "what plot?" and is smut scene after smut scene after smut scene. A balance between the two might have made this one easier to get into, and the book a little shorter.

I didn't love some of the tropes that came up by the end, but that's subjective.

Commending the author again on her beautiful cover art, which she does herself!

Seeing as this was over double the length of the first one, we get to have a lot more time with the world and the characters.
It was great seeing how much Tamsin is growing into herself. I'm loving seeing the pack forming. Can't wait to see how the Siege plays out and where is Eormen!!?
