One-time California beauty queen, straight-A student, active religious volunteer, busy young wife and mother of three, Cara Billings stood in panicked shock as the judge read her sentence. "One year in the Salt Lake City Adult Detention Center... " The words rang in her ears like a nightmare from which she could not be awakened. Twelve months for a crime that typically would have required a month or less?" She thought. "How could God allow this? More importantly, why did He let me fall so far?" This true story captures in riveting detail the heart-rending descent through pain, deceit, and addiction and into the fathoms of self-made confinement. The cold, unfeeling jail cell in which Cara ultimately lands is only a symbol of a deeper, more intangible imprisonment. What should have destroyed Cara, by any earthly rationale, does something profoundly different; bars of incarceration become her crutches, braces, and bandages, miracles trailing each hurt. While in jail Cara discovers an expanding truth of monumental importance; we have endless agency to choose our actions but not our consequences. Jesus Christ isn't our Preventer but rather, our Savior, and by Him and through Him even the most claustrophobic cages can become our most transformative cocoons.
This book pulled me in and I felt like I knew Cara. Her story is real, and though provoking. References to some scriptures may be new to those unfamiliar with The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints, but it helps the story and they are well described. This is a great book for anyone who is struggling with their sins, feeling lost, or needs an encouraging hand.
