EXCERPT: When the call was over Scarlett's hands were trembling. She raised her head slowly and stared at the pristine white ceiling above her, her breath trapped at the back of her throat. Her neck felt clammy under her T-shirt. Something vile was playing out behind her eyes. Something utterly preposterous, and yet . . .

She thought of all those odd little things her aunt had started saying in the months leading up to her death. Things Scarlett had put down to her failing mind. Things she sometimes giggled at behind her aunt's back with Ollie or, worse still, ignored altogether, dismissed as nonsense.

If Rebecca's confused mind had been remembering something that she'd forgotten was supposed to be a secret, and if that secret had something to do with Gina Caplin's disappearance, then wouldn't her aunt's life have been in danger?

ABOUT 'THE APARTMENT UPSTAIRS': Scarlett's aunt lived - and was brutally murdered - in the apartment upstairs. But Scarlett is determined that life should return to some kind of normal, even if that means living with just a ceiling between her and the scene of such a devastating crime. After all, this is her home. She's safe here. Isn't she?

Dee is busy balancing her job as a funeral director with organizing an event to mark the disappearance of her best friend, ten years ago. So she's got enough on her plate without worrying about the threatening messages that are appearing on her company's Facebook page.

When Scarlett approaches Dee about planning her aunt's funeral, an unexpected link between them emerges. Together, the two women could uncover secrets that have long been buried. Even while someone wants to stop them digging . . .

MY THOUGHTS: The Apartment Upstairs is an addictive read, one I couldn't put down and which had me reading into the early hours of the morning.

I loved the characters. Ordinary people, living ordinary lives, brought together by a death.

Scarlett, an independent accountant, plagued by CFS and ME, lives in the apartment below that of her aunt who was brutally bashed to death by her fiance. She chooses Fond Farewells to help organize Rebecca's funeral.

Dee and Lindsay are lifelong friends who own and operate Fond Farewells, a funeral home. They are opposite sides of the same coin: Dee is as introverted as Lindsay is extroverted. They used to be a threesome but their friend Gina Caplin disappeared without a trace almost ten years earlier. With Gina's parents, they are organising a gathering to remember Gina and hopefully stir up some memories which may lead to finding her.

Lesley Kara has the knack of taking the perfectly ordinary and making it into something extraordinary. An insidious underlying tension crept in as I read. Was there a connection between Rebecca and Gina Caplin? Or are Scarlett's suspicions merely a product of her overwrought mind?

This is a very cleverly plotted book. There's no attempt to shock, or to deceive with unreliable narrators. I didn't have to suspend belief. There's no gangs, or organised crime. It's all very ordinary, until it's not.

My suspicions veered wildly from person to person, my mind becoming every bit as overwrought as Scarlett's. But never did I even come close to guessing what had really happened, and what Scarlett's actions would uncover. I have loved everything I have read by this author, but The Apartment Upstairs is the best yet.

U.K. title :- The Apartment Upstairs

Scarlett travels home to her apartment on the bus and like everyone else, cranes her neck to see ‘the bedroom bloodbath’ in the apartment upstairs from hers. The victim is her aunt, Rebecca Quilter, murdered by her fiancé Clive who then kills himself. Scarlett contacts Dee Boswell as Fond Farewell, a funeral home, to arrange Rebecca’s funeral. Dee is struggling with her own issues especially that her close friend Gina disappears without trace nearly ten years ago. The storyline alternates between Dee and Scarlett which works really well.

Lesley Kara always constructs engaging novels and this is no exception. It's a good slow burner/psychological thriller with a never a dull moment plot. The characterisation is good throughout but especially of Dee and Scarlett and I like that the author gave some focus to ME via Scarlett who has frequent struggles with its symptoms. There are interesting dynamics between Dee and her partner Lindsay who have plenty of ups and downs and the relationship between Scarlett and her father and brother undergo fascinating changes too. A particularly good inclusion is hearing Rebecca’s voice through Scarlett and I like that touch.

As we find out in this gripping page turner people lie, cheat and do stupid things that fractures friendships and raises suspicion. People do much worse and kill and there are occasions where the author creates a real sense of pervading evil. There’s plenty of tension which escalates and builds to an ending with unexpected twists and turns.

Overall, this is very easy to read, it flows well with crisply written chapters that keep you invested and reading long past bedtime!

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Random House UK, Transworld for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

Lesley Kara books are always so addictive! I read this in an afternoon, with each chapter leaving me needing more. I loved the way the two stories intertwined and kept me guessing right until the end. Once again I was thinking I knew it all but I was wrong in so many ways 😅 I love it when this happens.

Would you go back and live in the house where a family member was murdered? Against her families advise, Scarlett does just this. He aunt Rebecca was brutally murdered by her fiancée, who then killed himself in the bathroom. This all happened in the apartment upstairs from where Scarlett is living but it is hard not to constantly think about it. She turns to Fond Farewells to help organise the funeral. Dee, the funeral director, is dealing with her own demons. Her close friend Gina has been missing for almost 10 years now. The 2 women bond over their losses and find that they paths had crossed before.

The ending of this will shock and surprise you. I certainly didn’t pick it. Full of twists and nasty characters, The Apartment Upstairs is a fantastic thriller that will certainly entertain you.

Thanks to Random House UK for my advanced copy to read. Published June 23rd.

I spotted this book in my local books shop and was intrigued by the synopsis. I had not ready books by Lesley Kara before but it was a good sign when shortly after starting it I was already looking to see what other books she had written.

Scarlett’s aunt was murdered in the apartment upstairs, but Scarlett is determined to continue to live below where her aunt was brutally murdered. Following her aunts death it falls on Scarlet to arrange her funeral etc and so she contacts Dee, a funeral director. Dee spends her life split between her job and organising an event to mark the disappearance of her best friend, ten years ago. On meeting Dee to arrange the funeral an unexpected link between them emerges. The two women start to uncover secrets that have long been buried but someone wants to stop them digging.

This is an excellent thriller that has introduced yet another talented author to my forever increasing list.

That book was underwhelming. The idea itself wasn't bad, but it was written like a cozy murder mystery and I wasn't expecting that.

The plot was far too slow and predictable with too little development. I also think that Scarlett and Dee, the two main characters, had far too little interactions. The author hinted that they become friends or even more in the future, but we'll never know.

What bothered me the most was something near the end of the book (don't read any further if you don't want to know the solution to the murder):

At the end it's revealed that Gina died from asphyxiation, caused by an accident arising from a consensual game of breath play with Euan. He panicked and hid her body in the cellar of the house previously owned by his grandmother.

After the revelation Dee, Euan's ex-girlfriend, starts acting like she should've known all along that something was wrong with him and that he was dangerous. But all we (as the readers) know about him is that he once suggested erotic asphyxiation to her and then backed off when she said she didn't want to try it.

For Dee that was horrifying and she thinks she should've confided in someone about it because that was a sign that he's dangerous. That doesn't make sense and it really bothered me that it read like kink-shaming and that "normal" people don't enjoy something like that.

Sadly I can't recommend this book.

The tension builds from the first page. The pace is on the slow side but don't let that put you off. Filled with red herrings that will keep you guessing and two stories running throughout the book, they soon join together seamlessly. I was quickly gripped by the storyline and it held my attention throughout. We also meet Lindsay who runs the funeral business with Dee. The story is told from different viewpoints, I quite enjoyed this book.

Scarlett’s beloved Aunt Rebecca has been brutally murdered on the apartment upstairs. It’s incredibly traumatic for Scarlett, but she’s determined to try and move on, she has no choice - this is her home too.

Dee is working hard running her funeral home business with her best friend Lindsay despite the sinister bad reviews they are receiving on their Facebook page. When Scarlett asks Dee to organise her aunt’s funeral a tenuous link between them becomes evident and a long hidden secret tries to remain buried…

A tale about friendship and families and the secrets which always have a habit of emerging. This is a real slow burner of a novel and one that is especially character driven. The characters are a diverse lot, but all very interesting and all play their part in building the plot up to a dramatic conclusion, which I definitely didn’t see coming!

Chilling and compelling, this is definitely a book you’ll race through.

Another one to watch in 2022, Lesley Kara's new twisty psychological thriller delivers on all the levels you would expect and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The characters are all brilliantly portrayed and engaging in different ways and the mystery, including a missing girl, a murder suicide and hidden secrets, is really well plotted and extremely addictive.

Beautifully written, immersive and entertaining This Girl That Girl is a great addition to the psychological thriller genre. Definitely recommended.

Rating: 2.0/5

I have now read all four of Lesley Kara's novels and none of the most recent three have come close to living up to the impressive promise of her debut, "The Rumour". Sadly, I would have to say that this latest offering is the weakest of the lot.

There were elements in the first half of the book, that I quite liked. Some appealing characters were being created and this was backed up by dialogue that was generally very natural and realistic. There were also some nicely observed humorous moments, too - though this also contributed to aspects of the style that seemed confused. There were a number of times when, stylistically, this felt like it was being penned as a cosy mystery, which is certainly not what I associate Lesley Kara with. Nor could the core of the plot's content be described as befitting a cosy mystery, so these elements did not always marry together well, though it was still managing to make for entertaining reading at this point.

Unfortunately, as the narrative progressed, so the style and content deteriorated. By the final third of the story, what had, until then, been a reasonably entertaining mystery with hints of cosiness, descended rapidly into something that was just plain silly. The plot and the characterisation became simplistic to the point of being puerile and developments were unrealistically convenient. It was almost as if the author suddenly realised that she had a deadline looming and just needed to get it finished. She even decided to introduce some totally pointless references to the global Covid pandemic in the final stages of the book, which added no value at all and were totally unnecessary and avoidable. Disappointing.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for supplying an ARC in return for an honest review.

Lesley Kara is an author that always has a grip on me for her stories.

The apartment upstairs is nothing less than the same as her older books, if not more because of a queer representation and chronic illness issues.

This was quite an intense read, slow in the beginning while the flawed characters are introduced and as soon as the story picks up, so the pace and thrills. I did not know where this was going to take me and I was pleasantly surprised by the ending.

Great writing, with characters that will make you live right from the beginning and a twisted story overall. The apartment upstairs is a page turner book I would recommend to any readers.

This book was truly addictive and a real page turner for me.
I found it very easy to read and engaging. The writing style is very good and the dual storyline works extremely well, leaving you guessing right to the very end, and, in my case, guessing wrong and being surprised by the twisted ending.
I loved the characterisation and how the relationships between the characters evolve: It plays an important part in creating tension and building up strain.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a slow burn, gripping thriller.

Scarlett's aunt was brutally murdered in the apartment upstairs. One of Dee's closest friends has been missing 10 years. These two women will meet, and secrets will unearth that links both of them more than they could ever have realised.

Brilliant book with a gruesome storyline that had me gripped from the start. Scarlett / Lindsey / Dee are brilliant characters that portray strong independent women, which I absolutely love! It's a book that doesn't seem so 'fake' considering how gruesome the story is / the coincidences that come up. Lesley is a very talented author!

Scarlett Quilter’s aunt, Rebecca, was brutally murdered in her upstairs apartment. Scarlett lives in the converted house ground floor apartment and upon her return home after the forensic formalities have been completed has to cope with the memories of her aunt living – and dying upstairs, as well as seeing the dying flowers of remembrance outside on the pavement.

The Apartment Upstairs is what I would regard as a ‘quiet mystery/thriller’ but with a sinister undertone running through. The story also includes a strand featuring that of a missing woman, a best friend of the two women who run the funeral business, Fond Farewells, engaged by Scarlett to deal with her aunt’s funeral.

Dee and Lindsay, the two funeral directors are unlike a traditional funeral service – their services are rather more sympathetically arranged and individually tailored to meet their client’s requests. Dee is the introvert of the two, with Lindsay enjoying life to the full on dating apps – something which causes disquiet and tension between the two friends. Whilst not overdone, I found some of the background and technical detail of what goes on behind the scenes quite fascinating – nothing gory I hasten to add, just an insight into procedures.

With fairly short chapters that leave you wanting more, this was a read that I enjoyed and raced through. Scarlett is an engaging character, suffering from illnesses, including ME, her health issues were highlighted sympathetically and if she wasn’t fully focused, it was quite understandable.

None of the characters here have an easy time. Friendships and family relationships are tested to the maximum by betrayals and mistrust. Unusually for me I wasn’t as surprised by part of the final conclusion as perhaps I should have been; I was already a little way ahead with my suspicions although there were still some surprises which I certainly wasn’t expecting. The Apartment Upstairs has some great characterisation with all the various strands being concluded in an entertaining and suspenseful thriller.

I'm sorry to say that I was completely underwhelmed by this book. It had the potential to be exciting and novel but for me it was far too slow and I struggled to maintain interest throughout. I did not particularly like any of the characters and found the dialogue jarring and unnatural at times. As always this is purely my opinion and I am sure that this will appeal to some but sadly this was not for me.

I have been enjoying some great books on my NetGalley TBR. I enjoyed The Rumour by Lesley Kara a little while before starting the blog, so when I saw her name pop up during one of my searches, I jumped at the chance to read her work again.
The Apartment Upstairs is an intriguing mystery thriller that provides a great escape when you open the cover. The author tells a realistic story with characters who you find yourself bonding with quickly as you explore loss and the effect a missing person has on the people left behind. This book shares the anguish suffered by those left without any answers.
Lesley Kara tells a detailed story, allowing you to get to know the characters and reveal each one’s past before she drops a bombshell. I enjoy the way the story slowly unfolds, allowing you to feel comfortable with the characters and their roles before everything is turned upside down. She digs deep into the emotions of the characters as she brings them to life. Slowly revealing their inner workings, leaving you feeling as if you are forming new friendships as you get to know them.
Scarlett’s aunt, Rebecca, was brutally murdered in her bed, in the apartment upstairs. When the police are done with the crime scene and the clean-up has been completed, Scarlett decides to return home. She has the perfect apartment, and she is not going to give it up. She loves her home, and her aunt played a big role in her life. She has good memories of Rebecca, so there is no reason for her not to return home.
Dee is a funeral director, she runs her business with her best friend and they are busy planning an event to remember their friend Gina, who went missing ten years ago. When Dee and Scarlett meet to discuss the arrangements for Rebecca’s funeral, these two women find comfort in each other’s company and both speak a lot more openly than they normally would.
Scarlett discovers correspondence linking Rebecca and Gina and soon she is left not knowing what to believe when her father ad her brother acts strangely. Is she seeing things that aren’t there, or is her family keeping her in the dark for a reason?
I enjoyed the way this book eases you into the story. You get to know the characters as each one’s story unfolds and just when you reach a relaxed reading pace the tables are turned and more details are revealed that leave you suspecting that everyone is not who they initially appeared to be. When you reach the halfway mark in this book you will not be able to drag yourself away. The first half of the book, I read over two days while the second half had me hooked and left me racing to the end.
Scarlett steals your heart with her vulnerability. She is ill and struggles with her grief at the loss of her aunt. Her family cares deeply for her and the way they look after her warms your heart. Ollie is a caring brother and his devotion to his sister leaves you feeling all warm and fuzzy.
Dee might run a successful business, but you quickly realise that this woman is not as strong as she pretends to be. Gina’s disappearance has left her distraught and while she keeps up appearances, she has put her life on hold. Never allowing anyone to see the cracks. Until her concern for Lindsay forces her to share some of her inner thoughts.
Lesley Kara tells a brilliantly creative tale about loss and heartache and just as you are in a comfortable place she turns things around, revealing that there is so much more to this story than you initially imagined. I love this author and this book did not disappoint. It’s a fabulous read.
Mystery and thriller fans will find themselves losing touch with their surrounding as they open this book. You can expect a relaxed easy read during the first half of this book but be prepared for an edge-of-your-seat experience once you pass the halfway mark. The Apartment Upstairs is a fantastic read that I would highly recommend. If you haven’t yet, add this one to your TBR.

Dee’s friend Gina went missing ten years ago, never to be seen again, and Scarlett’s aunt was brutally murdered in the apartment above Scarlett’s own place. The two meet when Scarlett contacts Dee’s funeral company to arrange her aunt’s funeral. Immediately you assume the two of them will dig up some skeletons and as the reader, you will not be the only one making assumptions. This is one of those stories where you suspect just about everyone.

It seemed rather predictable to me what had happened to Rebecca but the other part of the story kept me guessing right up until the reveal. Proving once more that you never really know someone, nor should you ever trust anyone. I mean, really, if you have trust issues, you might want to reconsider reading this one 😉. Some things became rather silly and somewhat over the top. Some characters’ behaviours had me utterly baffled at times. Yet, for some reason I can’t put my finger on, I couldn’t stop reading.

What I think the author did really well was explore the different ways people deal with grief. Both Dee and her friend Lindsay are obviously affected by the disappearance of Gina. But whereas Dee ended up living quite the sheltered life and often being afraid of putting herself out there, Lindsay did the exact opposite. Cracks start to appear in their friendship when Lindsay’s behaviour seemingly gets entirely out of control and while I wouldn’t necessarily approve of the way Dee tackled those particular instances, I could absolutely understand it.

Scarlett, on the other hand, is determined to have life continue as before. She will not consider the idea of moving as her apartment has been modified and adjusted to her every need. But who is creeping around her garden in the middle of the night or wandering around the apartment upstairs when they think Scarlett isn’t home? That bit was too easy to figure out, to be honest.

‘The Apartment Upstairs‘ felt more of a murder mystery to me than a psychological thriller. I was expecting it to be fabulously gripping and compelling but it didn’t quite deliver that for me. Full of suspense, yes. However, lacking the tension I look for in this genre. It’s definitely a quickie page-turner of a read though, but somehow Lesley Kara can’t ever seem to reach that same level of her debut ‘The Rumour‘ so I always remain rather underwhelmed. In my most humble opinion, of course. Be that as it may, I enjoyed it for what it was although I could have done without the unnecessary pandemic reminder at the end.

I loved The Rumour by Lesley Kara and have read everything she has written since. Her latest is not only an intriguing mystery of a murder/suicide and a decade old disappearance, it is also an intense character study with two unusual females at the helm.

There is Scarlett whose Aunt Rebecca was brutally murdered by her partner in the apartment upstairs. Chronically ill her family view her as weak and needing to be looked out for. As someone with a chronic and debilitating illness I felt the author not only showed how strong illness actually makes people but also the reality behind flares. How refreshing it is to read about illness/disability in a realistic but also positive way.

We also have Dee who runs funeral firm Fond Farewells with business partner Lindsay. They are arranging Rebecca’s funeral and also a big memorial for the anniversary of her missing friend Gina. When threats start appearing my first thought was the convenience of the timing and that they must be connected. Was it murder/suicide or was it framed to look that way? Where is Gina?

This is a slow burn thriller that had me asking so many questions and looking for clues to find the answers. While it did take me some time to get into the mystery the characters grabbed me from the start and although I did work some things out it was still an enjoyable read.

Scarlett’s aunt has been brutally murdered and the family are left to plan her funeral.
Dee is a funeral director who is bereft by the disappearance of her friend. She’s also struggling with the threats she’s getting to her business Facebook page.
Scarlett and Dee work together on her aunts funeral but they uncover lots of shocking links.

This was very Lisa Jewell like in terms of having too many characters, a slow start, too much early complication, dual third person POV and lots of mini plots that only properly add up in the final 50 pages.
I read this book because I loved the authors first novel, The Rumour. However, I was left incredibly disappointed by it. I felt interested enough to read on, but never interested enough to be hooked. I need to remember to stick to my own rules about DNF and not finish novels I’m not enjoying! By the time I wanted to DNF, I felt like I was too far in to do this.

This was a really great read, I devoured the book in two sittings - that’s when you know it’s a good book! Loved the writing style, the different POV - it felt like one of those reads you can just sink in to. An easy storyline to follow and especially one that’s addictive.

Really enjoyed the whole guessing throughout with secrets, twists and lies thrown in a long the way to keep the reader engaged and trying to figure out how it would end.

The characters were great, various personalities but likeable. Definitely characters that are full of determination.

A thoroughly enjoyable read, great pace and the chapters flow nicely. 100% recommend the apartment upstairs.

This is a great mystery thriller.
Dee and Lindsay own Fond Farewells, a modern funeral service company.
Scarlett has recently lost her Aunt and is still trying to process her murder but knows she wants a special funeral for her.
When Scarlett meets Dee she connects with her straight away and soon it’s clear they have someone in common.
Dee and Lindsay lost a friend and it seems Scarlett’s Aunt may have known her.
This is a clever mystery thriller that definitely had me hooked.
A great book that I really enjoyed.

Scarlett lives in the bottom flat as was done especially done for her illnesses she is very close to her brother Ollie. Dee and her friend Lindsay have there own business as funeral directors. but they have both never forgotten there best friend Gina who disappeared and never found her anniversary is coming up. Scarlett contacts Dee to discuss them doing her Aunt's funeral and Dee does a home visit and they both feel a connection for some reason but someone has it in for the funeral business. and Scarlett is starting to trust no one I so highly recommend you wont want to stop reading very addictive

I've been looking forward to Lesley Kara's fourth novel for ages, having read and enjoyed her previous three books, I was expecting another twisty, psychological thriller, and that's exactly what I got.

This author excels in creating solid female characters and The Apartment Upstairs is told through the eyes of two of the most unusual and intriguing women that I've come across for a long time.

Scarlett is a fairly isolated, often lonely woman. She suffers with a chronic health condition and this impacts her ability to do as much as she wants to. However, she's lucky enough to live in a beautiful apartment, specially adapted for her by her father and brother. She works from home and until recently, she had the company of her Aunt Rebecca who lived in the apartment upstairs. However, Scarlett and her family have been rocked by the recent tragic death of Rebecca. Brutally murdered, in her own bed by her boyfriend, who then took his own life. Rebecca's death has had such an impact on Scarlett, as well as her father and brother. She's recently returned home, to the apartment downstairs, but feels uneasy. She's convinced that there's evil lurking upstairs, and strange noises and dark figures in the garden in the early hours of the morning do not help.

Dee runs Fond Farewells, an alternative undertaking business and becomes involved in the story when Scarlett asks her to make the arrangements for Rebecca's funeral. Dee recognises Rebecca's name, and realises that Dee and her business partner Lindsay were once taught by her, years ago.

Dee and Lindsay's best friend Gina disappeared many years ago. There's been no trace of her and Dee is helping Gina's family to organise a memorial event for her.

At first, it would seem that Dee and Scarlett are only connected by Rebecca's death, but it soon becomes clear that they have other, long buried, links and these lead to Gina.

The Apartment Upstairs is a cleverly structured story that delivers surprise after surprise. Not only do we get a murder mystery, we also get a great insight into a life living with disability and the intricacies of dealing with the bereaved.
The family dynamics are done so well, with the male members of Scarlett's family assuming that her illness makes her weak, at times almost manipulating her to believe that herself. Dee and Lindsay's relationship is an interesting one to watch play out, often long-term friends will put up with much more from each other than they would from a newer friend. At times they become bitter towards each other, yet at others they are so very close.

I really enjoyed this twisty thriller, I loved the characters and the complexities of the plotting. Another great read from Lesley Kara.

Scarlett's aunt, Rebecca Quilter is murdered in the house they share and Scarlett's family, especially Ollie, her brother, do not want her to move back in once the police investigation is over. But, as the downstairs apartment has been specifically adapted for her needs, Scarlett, an accountant feels she should be back in her own space and thinks she can cope with what happened in the apartment upstairs. She has the funeral to keep her focused and enlists the services of the local funeral director, Dee Boswell who is dealing with her own loss. The 10-year anniversary of the disappearance of her close friend, Gina is quickly looming.

With the clever plotting my suspicions veered uncontrollably from person to person and I did not want to lay aside this compelling tale for even a minute, such was my need to see what was around the corner. Another hit for me by the talented author, Lesley Kara.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bantam Press via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
