Double, double toil and trouble,
A witch’s life is quite a muddle.

The Full Moon crystal shop in North Harbor, Connecticut, offers healing stones for all sorts of ailments. Unfortunately, there’s nothing among the gems that can help owner Violet Mooney learn how to wield the magick she inherited from both sides of her family—the legendary Ravenstar and Moonstone clans. As if being an apprentice witch weren’t difficult enough, Violet’s tutors are her estranged mother Fiona, a sister she never knew she had named Zoe, and a familiar in the form of a black cat, Xander.

Between learning spells, Violet is being investigated by the Magickal Council. A reporter out to debunk spiritualists was “genied”—her soul imprisoned inside a bottle—in Violet’s shop, and she can’t prove she didn’t do it. Meanwhile, her non-magickal life has become complicated when one of her crystal shop customers, Nicole St. James, goes missing and turns up dead, a victim of murder.

Determined to solve both crimes, Violet taps into powers she doesn’t understand, much less control—and finds herself conjuring up both supernatural and mortal enemies. . .

⭐⭐⭐

This book would have been 4 (maybe even 5) stars if it wasn't for how incredibly obnoxious Violet was. I have never wanted someone to get throat punched as much as Violet.🤬 Now that I got that out of the way, I really enjoyed everything else about this book. It was well written and well paced. The plot was intriguing. I loved the paranormal aspects and can't wait to learn more about what creatures, etc are in the magical realm. I am also curious where the overall "witch" arc is heading, since it wasn't resolved in this book. There was SO much good in this book, but Violet and her bratty know it all attitude really overshadowed so much of it. I am still on board for the next book, and hopefully the author will tone down Violet's character. 🤞🏻

Ends on a cliffhanger, but I'm not sure I care enought to want to know what happens next, sadly.

Violet didn't grow on me in this book. She was annoying.

Like, OK, she doesn't know anything about magic. All the other witches know she doesn't and almost everyone treats her badly for not knowing anything. That is rude and stupid and gets tired quickly.

But Violet herself doesn't really own the fact that she doesn't know anything either. If I were her I would be gobbling down knowledge about the witch world as fast as possible, because I wouldn't want to get in trouble or make a fool out of myself.

Violet, however, doesn't just get in trouble. She also makes a fool out of herself. And talks back a lot more than she had any excuse for. She doesn't come across as sassy, only whiny and she's still acting like a moody teenager, rather than a 32-year-old, which is really bothering me.

There's also a real issue with the two mysteries featured in this book, namely: I couldn't really care less about Mazzy OR Nicole.
They're both hit and miss victims. Dead or cursed or "genied" or whatever... I don't care. They're both cardboard characters with no real ties to Violet.

Blake (Mr Hot Guy) is balancing on the wrong side of arrogant, rather than charming. I don't like him very much.

Oh, and by the way... Violet conveniently forgets she can teleport when the book is supposed to be exciting towards the end. It's just stupid and I got mad at her instead.

So... Unsure if I will continue when book 3 shows up. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Witch Trial is part of a cozy mystery series by Cate Conte featuring crystal shop owner and witch, Violet Mooney. Apprentice witch, Violet is taught by or has acquired ability from Violet’s estranged mother, Fiona, a sister she never knew she had named Zoe, and black cat, Xander. When a reporter out to debunk spiritualists is “genied” (her soul imprisoned inside a bottle) in Violet’s shop, Violet can’t prove she didn’t do it. Then one of her crystal shop customers at The Full Moon, Nicole St. James, goes missing and turns up dead. Could it be murder?

I found Witch Trial to be a spellbinding, well written and enchanting read. Cate Conte's engaging cast of characters made North Harbor, Connecticut, a wonderful place to visit for a while. The narrative was smooth, the dialogue great, and there was just the right of magic and kookiness versus ordinary life. Violet’s two cats, Monty, an orange cat without magical powers, and Xander, who possesses some magical ability, add personality in spades. I was totally invested in the involved mystery. Fun and entertaining.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Kensington Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

I enjoyed the paranormal aspects in this book, particularly the ability to teleport yourself (no more traffic!). The different magical powers that the characters had available to them was probably my favorite part of this book. I don't know much about genies but found the information provided interesting and added another level to the story. The mystery was intriguing but wasn't solved in this book even though it was held over from the last one. This made it difficult to really get into the story, not having the conclusion. Still, the story kept my interest and I am looking forward to the next one and hopefully the solution to the mystery.

I received a copy from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Book two in the “A Full Moon Mystery” series, Witch Trial was nice but not as enjoyable as it could have been. I like the characters and find that they are becoming more and more enjoyable, even Violet’s mother, who is not the warm motherly type. The setting is fantastic, and I would love to spend time in Violet’s crystal shop. Magick abounds, but not all of it is good.

Having a customer who comes to your crystal shop for help would make anyone anxious, but in Violet’s case, she has more than a bit of concern when she realizes through her magick that the customer’s life may be in danger. Having that same customer murdered shortly after her visit causes Violet quite a few sleepless nights. Add in her attractive new mentor, her somewhat excentric mother and sister, a magickal council that may not welcome her, an evil genie, and she isn’t sure which way to turn.

As with most cozies by this author, this book contains a well-written plotline, delightful characters, and a mystery that isn’t too difficult to solve if you pay attention to the clues. A crystal shop mixed with real magick, and murder have all the elements needed to give readers a few hours of enjoyment. Suspects are around; most are witches, wizards, and a genie, and a few non-magickal beings as well. Motives range from jealousy to hidden agendas. Clues glitter throughout the story, just like Violet’s mom. However, the killer’s reveal isn’t simple and may raise more than one eyebrow from readers.

I wish I could have rated Witch Trial higher, but if there is one thing I can’t stand in a cozy mystery, it’s unanswered questions left hanging. A cozy isn’t a traditional thriller or suspense story, it’s meant to have a happy ending with justice being served and all the questions answered; it is not supposed to end in a cliffhanger! Especially not when it adds more questions than it answers. This type of ending leaves me frustrated and unhappy. This series has everything I love in a good witch/paranormal cozy, the magick is plausible, the crystal shop is original, the action is enjoyable, and the characters are likable. I will read the next book in this series and hope the cliffhanger resolves in book three and does not carry over again.

Delve deep into this enchanting story of Violet Mooney. She's crystal shop owner who recently learned that she belongs to a family of powerful witches. Now that her mother and sister have suddenly appeared in her life, she attempts to navigate the witchy world and still run a business. Unfortunately events have caused some of the witchy realm to distrust her leading to a trial. Once you open your mind to the possibilities of other realms, you'll be drawn into the twisty story and fall in love with the characters, as I did. Cate Conte has created a unique and fleshed out world to captivate and entertain you. And Holy Cliffhanger, now I can't wait to read the next one.

First, the ending, why!?
Anyways I really enjoyed this second Full Moon Mystery. Violet’s mortal and newly discovered magickal worlds are colliding and it’s hard for her to navigate. Pile on a mortal crime and an ongoing magickal crime and she has a lot to handle. Not to mention still getting to know her estranged mother and newly discovered half sister. I enjoyed the interactions of the characters and the flow of the story. Very interested to see what is next in store for Violet.

I've become attached to Violet in this quirky series by Cate Conte.
Discovering she's a witch is one thing, but finding out her boyfriend may not be who he says he is, makes her mad.
Finding out the truth is all she wants.
I'm looking forward to reading more in this series.

I received an advance copy of this book via NetGalley.

In this second book in a cozy mystery series, Violet is a crystal shop owner with recently-unveiled magical powers. When a troubled customer goes missing, she sets out to investigate, uncovering sordid secrets in her hometown--even as other witches investigate her for an incident that happened in the previous book.

I didn't read the first book, but that didn't make it difficult to get into this one. The plots are fairly straightforward. I was left with many frustrations and questions as I read, though. So much of the book's prolonged drama is because people aren't engaging in basic levels of communication, which is exasperating. The magic here doesn't seem to have any rules. Witches can teleport wherever. Violet is treated like she's incredibly powerful, but I saw no evidence of that whatsoever. She's willfully ignorant about magic in general, and that seems to largely be the case to drag out the magical subplot. I was mystified as to why she was serving on a local magical-governing board.

Genies and their powers seem to be set up to be the big bad guys in this world, and though they aren't described here as having an origin here, it made me uncomfortable that the one Arabian/Middle Eastern aspect was elevated to such a dark role. I hope that more nuance comes into play in future books.

The mundane mystery at the heart of the book is the best part, but I couldn't turn off my author/editor mode to relax and enjoy the loose magical worldbuilding.

WITCH TRIAL by Cate Conte is the second book in the A Full Moon Mystery Book series. It’s the spellbinding story of Violet Mooney - as she’s discovering her powers, her crystal shop - The Full Moon, and murder.

After the death of Abby, the grandmother who raised her, and having just recently been reunited with Fiona, her mom, and Zoe, her half-sister, plus finding out about being a witch, Violet Raven Moonstone is having a difficult time figuring out who she is and what she is. Having inherited powers from both her maternal and fraternal sides, the Ravenstar and the Moonstone clans, she evidently has the ability to use some yet discovered major powers. She’s found peace and purpose after her dear friend and now employee introduced her to crystals and their powers. Opening The Full Moon has brought her great joy and usefulness. Through it she has found many of her skills and powers as a witch. At the same time, it seems that her long relationship with Todd, her boyfriend, leaves a lot to be desire. Violet is thinking that breaking it off would be the best thing. She just hasn’t done it yet.

We learn about Mazzy Diamond having been genied inside of Violet’s shop as it’s carried over from the first book. After her grandmother’s death, Violet was to take over her seat in the Magickal Council. Part of being approved would mean a hearing to which she will have to account for what happened to Mazzy in her shop. That’s why Fiona brought in Blake Alexander, a lawyer, to help Violet know what to expect and how to answer questions she was likely to get thrown at her.

In the meantime, her friend Ginny brought Nicole St. James to her shop in need of her help. Violet senses immediately that she is scared and had something fearful hanging around her. In her way, she tries to help her, but she can’t get the feeling of doom and fear that emitted from her. After she finds out she’s missing, she’s determined to do all she can to find her.

Mazzy only has three full moons to be saved from being genied before she will be locked in that form forever. Can Violet satisfy the council about what had taken place and that she had nothing to do with it while at the same time try to find answers to help her before it’s too late. After the council learns for the riff between the two, will it give them more ammunition to say she had done the deed? Will Violet find the answers in time?

Was Nicole’s disappearance linked to a wrong done in the past? Will trying to find out, end up with Violet facing a similar fate? Is Violet’s relationship with Todd over? Will finding out facts about Todd be the straw that broke the camel’s back or will it just dim her opinion of someone she’s started to have thoughts about? Will Violet be able to hold her own with the Magickal Council? How will her powers develop?

WITCH TRIAL is a page turning paranormal cozy mystery. There are mysteries and crimes solved in this second book of the series, but there is another that is left as a cliffhanger running so far through both books in this series. Cate Conte keeps it interesting and fun as we learn along with Violet about her family connections, the dynamics of the Magickal Council and Violet’s place in it as well as her developing powers. WITCH TRIAL can most definitely be read as a standalone book in that it isn’t hard to figure out who is who and the connections. Even figuring out the running theme between the two books wasn’t hard for me. Although I think I could have been more on track faster if I had read the first book before reading the second. That being said, I will be going back and reading the first one while I wait with anticipation for the third book in the series.

I adore this series as it is captivating to read . This is the second in series and as enjoyable as the first in series. Violet is our amazing protagnist who owns a beautiful crystal shop and does intuitive readings with crystals for customers. Her witch powers are new to her and she is navigating learning her powers with a witch board of directors, a mentor witch who drives her batty and a difficult Mother who only appears with glitter and never uses a door. Its so much fun to further delve into the life of Violet in this second in series especially when she attempts to navigate her teachings, her business and her life with solving two cases. She is savvy smart and a talented medium and witch who is also a time spinner and can snap her fingers and appear where she chooses. She has a familiar in form of a smart cat and the support of her relatives past and present that all are helping her learn to be a proper witch. I love the charcters, the sleuth was well crafted and the humor throughout is fun to read and had me laughing out loud at the antics of Violet. A very fun read that I highly recommend. Thank you to the author for the ARc for review. My review opinions are my own.

Witch Trial is book 2 in A Full Moon Mystery series by Cate Conte. I hadn’t read book 1 at time of requesting and had no problem following along, but might be wise to read in order.

Crystal shop owner and witch Violet Mooney, the murder of one of her customers launches her into a case that conjures up both supernatural and mortal enemies...

The characters were engaging and I loved her 2 cats one normal and one magical. The setting and overall story was good, but I am struggling on how I want to rate it as I feel the main mystery wasn’t solved but it was a continuation from book 1 so maybe that was what author wanted as it will be resolved in book 3. With that said I do want to read book 3 to find out what happens. Next for Violet.

I requested and received an Advanced Reader Copy from Kensington Books and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This was an ARC I received from the author. It’s the second book in a series and I recommend you start with the first book. By the time this book started I had a vested interest in the characters and the plot that seems to run through all the books. Each story has a mystery that is solved by the end of the novel. Violet, the main character has discovered she comes from a long line of witches. Having been raised amongst humans, she has a lot to learn about being a witch. She’s a stubborn, determined, strong willed woman who wants answers to the questions she has and solutions to the problems she’s facing. Violet has relationship problems, mother issues, and an interesting half-sister. The super natural world introduced in the books is convoluted and intriguing. It’s a shame I have to wait so long for the next installment.

There are two mysteries in Witch Trial—A human mystery involving the death of Violet Mooney's client, and a witchy one where a reporter (Mazzy) was "genied" in Violet's crystal shop. The human mystery mostly involves Violet seeing people meet up with each other (or have meetings), which doesn't lend toward any sense of urgency, danger, or suspense. There is less of a through line than an info drop toward the end. Then, Violet is accidentally teleported to a building with the murderer, then forgets that she can teleport when she's in a locked space, and again forgets when she's attacked. Ultimately she has to be saved. (Insert eye roll emoji)

The second mystery is time sensitive. In order to save Mazzy, who was turned into a puddle of goo, the criminals must be identified within a month. There had been more time, but this was such an important issue that the Magikal Council did nothing for over a month. When they finally convened, they decided on a subcommittee that will meet up for the first time in the following week. So, again with meetings. Add indifferent delays and you kill any sense of urgency. The only urgency seems to revolve around family politics rather than the morality of trying to save Mazzy. When Violet decides she need to save Mazzy, it is lip service only, as she petulantly resists any investigation (why do we have to do it now?). When there is real information via Mac (an investigator), Violet is condescending and leaves in a snit. The only person who seems to want to move things forward is Blake, a witchy lawyer hired by Violet's mother. The superficial attempts at attraction between Violet and Blake would have worked so much better if he wasn't always babysitting a woman-child caught in the rebellious throes of puberty.

The most insulting part of the book is that it ends on a cliffhanger, with the expectation that the reader should care about Mazzy when the other characters clearly do not.

Witch Trial is the second book in the Full Moon Mystery series. I was a fan of the first book and was looking forward to reading this one. I have to say, I was not disappointed. While book 2 can be read as a stand alone, there is an underlying mystery surrounding Violet's family, her paranormal abilities and the death of her grandmother that run through the series. While the main mystery is solved, the underlying thread surrounding Violet and her situation is not resolved in this book.

Violet is settling into the realization that she comes from a powerful magical family. She is getting to know her mother and sister, which isn't easy considering Violet has her own thoughts and feelings surrounding their appearance in her life. I find Violet to be a likable character and she has strength and determination. The cast of secondary characters is engaging and help round out the series.

The mystery kept me guessing throughout the entire book. Part of that is because just like Violet, we don't know who is magical and who is mortal at this point. There is plenty of family intrigue behind the scenes related to Violet and her family. This is not resolved as it appears to be a recurring thread through each of the books to date. Ms. Conte introduces some new secondary characters that could shake up Violet's life, but do help in solving this mystery.

This series is a paranormal mystery and that does play a large role in the series. I enjoy the paranormal cozies and this one hits all the right buttons for me.

I voluntarily read a digital advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher, Kensington Books, through NetGalley. The thoughts and opinions expressed are my own and were not influenced by the manner in which I received this book.

In book 2 of the Full Moon Mystery Series, Volet is being investigated by the Magickal Council. A reporter out to debunk spiritualists was “genied”—her soul imprisoned inside a bottle—in Violet’s shop, and she can’t prove she didn’t do it. Meanwhile, one of her crystal shop customers, Nicole St. James, goes missing and turns up dead, a victim of murder.
When I started to read this book for Net Galley I realized it was book 2 in a series and so I actually went and got book 1 through Kndle Unliited (can't promise how long it will be avalable to read for free that way but it was when I went to read it). I felt it helped me understand the series a lot better, since each book ends on a cliffhanger and the case isn't really solved.....each book just rolls into the next book. It is good if you have read them all, but if you haven't, then it can really leave you lost and take away from your enjoyment. I guess it is a good way to make sure you will read all of the series! If you are a fan of cozy witch mysteries, then you will enjoy this series. I do suggest starting at book one though.

Violet Mooney has discovered she is a witch. Her father and grandmother separated her from her mother and the rest of her witch family when she was quite young and she was raised in the human world. Violet owns a crystal shop called The Full Moon. When one of her customers, Nicole St. James, disappears Violet is determined to solve the mystery of her disappearance. I really enjoyed Violet's persistence about learning what happened to Nicole. Also it was fun reading about Violet starting to learn how to use her magic. In this second book in The Full Moon Mystery series, Witch Trial, author Cate Conte clears up the Nicole St. James mystery and provides more clues in the overall arc of the mystery of the genieing of Mazzy. I am really looking forward to the next book in the series.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

I definitely liked the second book better than the first book, but still.

Violet Mooney or Violet Ravenstar Moonstone is learning about the magickal (book's spelling, not mine) world. Her grandmother left her a spell book which is enchanted to show her more spells as she learns. Her mother, Fiona, gets a handsome witch to teach Violet about the magickal world and the council she was sworn in to as well. In the meantime, there are mysteries and murders to be solved. One of the mysteries, soon to be a murder-mystery, is a witch who was genied in the first book. The other murder-mystery is the death of a new client to Violet's shop. Violet finds herself, or inserts herself willingly, in the troubles around her.

I could care less about the "real-life" mysteries. I could care less about Todd or Syd. The Todd thing is really being dragged out.

A lot of what is not rectified will seem to carry over into the next book.

The book ends at an awkward spot. The murder-mystery is solved, but then there is an announcement of new information right at the end for the larger magickal concern, but it ends without the character telling what the new information is. I didn't like that choice, but at least I have the third book to wrap up things. I'm guessing.

There were also some consistency issues, I think. Fiona in the first book removes all the chocolate out of Violet's apartment, because chocolate dims a witch's ability. But then, she offers a chocolate chip something to Blake, the witch that is helping Violet, and he willingly eats it. I think I might have missed somewhere where it was okay or maybe it was a magickal chocolate chip or something. Also, one of the abilities that Violet gets a hang of in the book is teleporting. It's unclear why she couldn't teleport herself out of an area. Maybe I skipped over or misread why the chocolate chip thing is okay and why she couldn't teleport in a specific instance?

This is the book that I saw at an end cap at the bookstore under "cozy mysteries." I wanted to try a cozy mystery and intentionally impulsed picked whichever one caught my eye. This one did because of witches, and also I liked the cover art. Whoever did the cover art did a really nice job. I got the first and the third, because it made sense to. I'm a little bummed that I'm not enjoying it as much as I wanted . . . I wanted more of a Sabrina the Teenage Witch vibe or Halloween Town vibe. That's not entirely the book's fault.

Princess Fuzzypants here: When we first see Violet she is still getting up to speed about her “secret” identity as a witch that had been hidden from her by her father and grandmother. The learning curve is steep even with the help of her newly returned mother, Fiona and hereto unknown sister Zoe and her delightful black cat familiar, Xander. She is only beginning to understand her powers and her place in the witchy world when a distraught woman is brought in for a reading. Violet is very concerned when the woman disappears and then is found, murdered in a park. She feels she should have been able to protect her.

But it turns out, in spite of having some very powerful family connections, Violet may be the one requiring protection. Someone is trying very hard to pin the supernatural dispatch of a snoopy reporter on Vi. It all occurred before Violet had even an inkling of her identity but that is not going to stop a jealous family from trying to bring her and her mother down. Her mother enlists the support of hunky Blake to help keep Violet out of trouble and to assist her in navigating this new and complex world. Can she trust him? And what is connection between him and her soon to be ex boyfriend?

There are lots of story streams that often intersect. If you are looking for a stand alone book, this is not going to satisfy. We begin literally right after the end of the previous one and when this one ends, just as suddenly, the reader knows it will be hard to wait for the next one to come out so we can see how it ends. I am usually not a big fan of cliff hangers but I will make an exception. There is so much going on, it would impossible to conclude it in one edition. Five purrs and two paws up.

It seemed like it'd been forever since I read the first book, so it took me just a little bit to remember what had gone on, but the author did a good job of reviewing without spoilers. I really do recommend reading the first book first because much of this book is a continuation of something that happened in that book.

There were a lot of different characters and possible suspects for both the continuing witchy situation and the murder of a mortal in this book. I loved Violet's references to Samantha and Darrin in one place in the book, lol. In this world, guys and girls are both just witches for simplicity purposes I guess, but it's still just as hard to get the nerve up to tell a mortal that you're a witch just like back in Samantha's day. We got to know Violet's sister Zoe a little better this time as well as their mom, Fiona. I really like Zoe, and I guess my liking of Fiona's character might be selective. I only like her sometimes or if I know she's trying to help one of her girls. She's growing on me, lol.
I wasn't sure about Blake's role in this, so I just kept an open mind and read on.

Toward the end, there was a surprise I didn't see coming, and I hadn't been able to guess whodunit. The ending after the killer was caught honestly seemed a little abrupt, but it did make sense and didn't really leave anything hanging. I do hope there's going to be another book so at least the conversation being had could continue.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by Kensington Publishing via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own. This book releases tomorrow, December 28, 2021.

Violet is still coming to terms with being a witch, learning to wield her magic, and adjusting to having not just her mother in her life, but a half sister, Zoe. Because of her family affiliations, Violet is expected to take over her grandmother's seat on the witch council. That would be daunting enough, but there is still the mystery of who attacked Mazzy Diamond in Violet's shop. Violet is more concerned with saving Mazzy than finding out who harmed her, but no one else seems to care. When a young woman comes to Violet for help, Vi senses a darkness surrounding her. Days later, Nicole St James is found murdered in a nearby park. Violet is convinced that Nicole's death is connected to Mazzy's attack and she sets out to ask questions and do some investigating of her own. Everyone tells her to stay out of it, but Violet isn't backing down, even though her own life may be in danger.

I liked some aspects of the book and disliked others. Characters were fully realized, and the plot had good pacing throughout. It was fun to make new 'witchy' discoveries along with Violet. What I didn't like was that most of the book was in Violet's first-person point of view, but the author chose to write a few chapters in third-person pov. I maintain that if you're going to write in first-person, commit to it. I didn't like that some characters weren't forthcoming with Violet, because they felt the need to protect her. Maybe she wouldn't need protecting if you explained things to her? Was not fond of the abrupt ending, either.

An enjoyable story, in spite of the minor drawbacks. Solid four stars.

2022 Goodreads Challenge…book 3 of 24. ‘Witch Trials’ by Cate Conte.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

I enjoyed reading this book up until the very ending. They never finished the book which is so frustrating.

Violet has recently learned she is a witch and she is working to navigate this new lifestyle. In the meantime, a woman that Violet did not like much, Mazzy, has been “genied” in Violets shop. Basically condemning them to a pit of darkness where their soul is not okay. It can only be reversed by the witch who did it in the first place. Another murder of a human takes place about halfway through the book. So this has turned into a double mystery. Super exciting, right! I was intrigued the entire way until the end when only ONE murder was solved. What happened to Mazzy is never revealed.

After getting frustrated I lookup up the book online to find out I was reading the second book in the trilogy. I picked this book up at a bookstore in Arizona and nowhere on the cover did it say it’s a trilogy.

While I did enjoy to book to a certain point, I won’t read the next book. If you decide to read this book, I highly recommend you start from the first book.

And if the author reads this, I recommend an update on the cover to let people know it’s a trilogy and what book they are purchasing/reading.

Violet Mooney, owner of Full Moon crystal shop and new witch, balances her magical life with her mortal one as she deals with two crimes, one on each side of her life.

Keeping the two parts of her life separate proves challenging as she deals with the ordinary death of a customer, Nicole St. James. At the same time, the Magickal Council investigates who cast an extreme spell on reporter Mazzy Diamond in Violet’s store. So naturally, with friends in both parts of her life, Violet begins looking for answers.

Cate Conte’s spellbinding storytelling skills continue to enchant readers with just the right amount of magick and mystery. Violet’s mother and half-sister help her develop her witchy powers. Her friend Sydney and mentor, Josie, who work at Full Moon, keep Vi grounded in the mortal world. Ms. Conte creates an engaging cast of characters that make North Harbor, Connecticut, a fascinating place to visit. And Violet’s two cats, Monty, not used to the magic, and Xander, who exhibits magical touches, add personality. Ms. Conte hits just the proper balance between Violet’s two worlds which makes this an entertaining story to follow.

The one thing I hated about this was that it ended on a cliffhanger, which is why I took off a star. I hate cliffhangers. They really drive me up a wall. That being said, I loved a lot about this book. I mean, the fact that you could teleport yourself was simply awesome. The mystery was good even though it didn't get solved in this book. Since I hadn't read the first, I felt like I was missing a few things. This is certainly a series to read in order so you don't miss anything.

In my opinion, Violet Mooney was a great character. She owns a crystal shop and then discovers that she is a witch. A witch's mother and sister have suddenly shown up in her life. If only she could manage to run her business and her witch world in harmony things would be great.  what in the world could go wrong? Only everything!

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. This review was originally posted on Storied Conversation

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, so I was excited to start this second one in the series. Poor Violet has been thrown into this new world, and she is assigned a “helper” by her mom, but she doesn’t trust her mom or the new guy. While dealing with that, one of her customers dies, and she feels obligated to find out what happened even if it leads to her death. This was an interesting and well-written story, but what really drew me in is that this is turning out to be an interesting story ARC that seems it’s going to span over a couple/several books with each book having its own mini story. I love when that happens. Both stories are interesting, and I’m excited to see where this is going to go. The only fly in the ointment, so to speak, is that I’m not fond of when not communicating leads to misunderstandings/drama/etc. You have to read to see what I’m talking about. This was a great book, and I can’t wait to read the next. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

As a fan of urban fantasy, I'm always in the market for a good paranormal mystery - and this new series seems like the perfect pre-Halloween read. The series follows budding witch Violet Mooney as she struggles to come to terms with not only her newfound magical bloodline - but also her equally new family, after her previously-unknown mother and sister come crashing into her life. This second volume finds Violet thrust into an increasingly perilous mystery, while still trying to navigate her magical abilities. The book also does a good job of introducing the players of the magical community while expanding the world without sacrificing the humor and pacing Conte is well-known for. If it has one downside, it's that Violet's personal issues seem short-changed in the conclusion, with a rather weak ending that's hopefully further explored in subsequent books. Overall though, it's a fun read for cozy fans of the supernatural.
