African Lion

Rate this book
In this globe-spanning crime thriller, brimming with majestic wildlife and international intrigue, the race is on to save a pride of Barbary lions, long-extinct in the wild. But with the super-rich Emirati poaching mafia involved, there’s danger at every turn.

Carl Hendricks, a rugged Zimbabwean, is crowned Echelon Mixed Martial Arts World Champion in Las Vegas. When he moved to Nevada, the wildlife warrior and ex-commander of Apex, the anti-poaching NGO, was a wasted figure, horrifically scarred from an ambush by a poaching kingpin while on patrol in his native land. During his convalescence, he falls into mixed-martial arts and reinvents himself. But after meeting Nicki Bowman, a state-park ranger working in the nearby conservation area, he’s drawn back into animal preservation.

Backstage after a fight, Carl is introduced to Asad Al Nahyan, an emissary of Environment Abu Dhabi (EAD), proclaimed savior of the Arabian oryx. Carl is given a rare glimpse of a pure lineage of Barbary lions, seized in a drug bust, housed by the EAD before being shipped to a secret location. With Nicki’s help, Carl tracks them down. Richard Black, a British SIS agent and Apex security consultant, has been tasked with luring Carl back to Africa. Richard discovers Carl’s interest in the Barbary lions and Asad’s criminal past. Carl becomes embroiled in a series of harrowing confrontations that untangles Asad’s unnerving interest in the lions and his demise.
