Holy Smoke:: Trapped by Hellfire

Rate this book
There’s no better place to relax and renew than peaceful Yellowstone National Park so Sal, Cornelius and Pioneer camp in the woods overnight, and Ranger Vicky hikes to the backcountry with her dog, for her final set of dissertation data.

Surrounded by enough nature to enlighten and inspire the dead, they could not hope for better circumstances.

Except after a prolonged drought desiccated the forest, then lightning ignites all that dry wood, and the park service is up against the largest natural forest fire in their history. Now America’s beloved icon is up in flames.

Superintendent Duka begins an all-out campaign to stop the park from burning to ash. He sends Ranger Keezheekoni to build a risky firebreak, smokejumpers to save valuable timber and tries to protect a remote park service cabin. These firefighting heroes find they are up against unpredictable life-threatening obstacles.

Sal, Cornelius, Pioneer and Vicky are lost, desperately looking for a way out. First, they must escape from a bubbling, burning hell.

You will not want to put this disaster down.

It took me a few minutes to get into this book but wow once it got going it did not stop! I felt like I was on the edge of my seat reading this! It took me on a roller coaster of emotions of happiness, worry, panic, excitement, and then some sadness I actually almost cried at the end. This book was wonderfully written, and it's one I will read it again. I think it took me a few minutes to get into it because I had not read this style of writing in a long time but once I got going I could not put it down! 10 out of 10 in my book, and I highly recommend it!

“What better place for characters to go through the hell of rebirth than a burning
forest unmarred by the hands of man?”

This is how Russell Brandon begins his afterword, which of course I read after I finished the script, but I had the exact thoughts while reading it.

Holy Smoke is an exceptionally well-written disaster script of epic proportions, filled with action, but it also cuts to the core of the human experience under extreme conditions, as well as our undeniable and all-important connection to nature. People are very much a part of nature and Holy Smoke recognizes that without being preachy and also without too much focus on the action. What could've been another Roland Emmerich-style disaster film is elevated in this script with great effect. Among other deep issues, Brandon explores birth, rebirth and the triumph of perseverance amid a host of problems beyond a raging inferno.

Highly recommended for a quick, insightful, informative and most importantly - entertaining - read. There's also a good amount of humor!

Continuously Entertaining

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Trapped by Hellfire. It was filled with intense drama and clever humor. I enjoyed getting to know the diverse characters. I have never been to Yellowstone, but was able to picture the fierce destruction and horror of a fast moving fire in such a serene, beautiful landscape.

The adventure of nature and natural disaster instantly grips the reader. Such great attention to historical context and imagery was placed in this story. The pulse of this screenplay would make a great movie!

Holy Smoke is entertaining and humorous. It discusses the brave men and women of the parks/forestry service. The author includes the real dangers that threaten our parks on a regular basis. I enjoyed the transformation of the characters as they overcame some of their personal vices during their struggle for survival. It would be a very interesting movie!
