The blade slashes then plunges deep into trembling flesh…then the bodies hit the floor.
They stalk their prey from deep in the menacing shadows, poised and ready to strike at the penultimate moment. Their victims unexpectant, unaware, until they wake in dark rooms, dank basements, or on chilly floors stained with the rotting blood of other hapless victims. The stench fills their nostrils and permeates their pores, the bile rising up in their burning throats. They scream and try to escape, but all attempts are futile. Fear dances like spiders down their spines as they hear ominous footsteps approaching—their eyes spread wide in horror as they realize the end is near.
Let the Bodies Hit the Floor is the latest series from Sinister Smile Press, the creators of The Better Off Dead series. These volumes bring you the very best in horror/slasher/stalker/serial killer crime fiction. The more vicious and bloodier, the better. So, put on your pee-pee pants, because you’re in for one hell of a dark, sinister journey.
A Pile of Bodies, A Pile of Heads – Let the Bodies Hit the Floor, Volume 1
Contains stories by Sinister Smile Press, Mike Marcus, David Rider, Brian Asman, Bridgett Nelson, Dev Jarrett, K. Mason, Sam Rebelein, Jonathan Rae Rivera, Nick Roberts, R.A. Clarke, Jen Ellwyn, and Ali Seay.
R.E. Sargent, the author of Relative Terror, One-Star Review and the Fury series, lives in Oregon with his wife, Sandi and their two fur children, Mason, a Bernese Mountain Dog, and Riley, a Chocolate Lab.
Born in California, R.E. spent most of his life living and working in Arizona, where he met his wife. Between them, they raised four sons. Talk about a lot of testosterone in the house!
An avid reader, R.E. fell in love with books when he was a child and the bug never went away. It was his love for the written word--and his admiration for authors such as Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Gregory Mcdonald, Paul Gallico, Donald Westlake and Roald Dahl--that persuaded him to write novels himself. Currently, he is working on the latest novel in the Fury - Scorned series.
When not working or writing, R.E. and his wife enjoy making trips to the coast and taking in the ocean air. Life doesn't get much better than watching the waves crash on the shore as the sun sets below the horizon. Well, maybe one of those drinks with the little umbrellas would make it better. You know what I mean, right?
Wow! So good. Review coming when it's not 3:00 AM.
Have to sleep w/the friggin light on!
You all scared me silly!
My review:
Terrifying. Crazy. Infused with more energy than 10 cups of coffee. The stories are a must-read for any fan of horror.
Warning -- gore. Lots of gore.
The stories were compelling as anything. I cannot help but think any horror reader would be absolutely riveted -- electrified -- by this collection.
I went into it with caution. I wasn't sure how I'd feel. But I was hooked by the second page of the first story. Amazing.
I have become more and more awed by the power of anthologies and story collections. I love seeing each and every writer's unique style. This collection was no different in that regard.
I loved ALL the stories but two I must single out.
One is from a GR friend of mine -- Bridget. Bridget, I so love your works. The interesting thing about you is that you seem to always write about what I love. I remember in one book, you had a horror story about a Politician -- I am a political junkie so that was the perfect fit for me.
And now you have an innocent trip to the beach that turns into --well -- I will not say because people need to read it!
I am a huge fan of the sea (just look at my user name!!) So this was perfect for me as well. And I could visualize everything so well. I will never look at a beach vacation in the same way again! Part two perhaps?
The other story I must single out is:
Wilding by Ali Seay.
Ali -- I don't know what to say. Your writing left me speechless. This is a story that will not leave me for months -- if at all. I was so reminded of "The Lottery" and "The Purge" and other stories. It was quite an experience reading this. A film version I could so easily see. As with Bridget's story, I say to you -- part two perhaps?
So, to sum up -- an engaging bloody good time! (Literally bloody!) This was a great collection and one that I'd recommend to horror fans everywhere.
**I have a story in this anthology, so my rating is strictly for the work of the other authors included.
Serial killers, slashers, stalkers... Yes, please!
This is an amazing collection that doesn't include any supernatural elements. Instead, it focuses on the scariest of all monsters...human beings.
So, let's take a brief glimpse of each of the stories, shall we?
Tilly by Jen Ellwyn - A tautly-paced story that keeps you on the edge of your seat! You'll never look at your dentist the same way, ever again.
Do Not Disturb by Brian Asman - All of Brian's stories have a wry humor, and this one is no exception. The moral? Don't mess with dudes, wearing mismatched shoes, who are trying to catch up on sleep in a cheap-ass motel. Loved it!
Getaway by Bridgett Nelson - No review for my story, but I will say that it was inspired by my love for the movie THE STRANGERS.
Good Craftsmanship by Dev Jarrett - A cop, a creepy as hell killer, a plethora of knives, and multiple hunting references. This is a GREAT story.
The Finisher by R.A. Clarke - The antagonist in this story might have skeeved me out more than any of the rest. He's vile...but this story sure is clever.
One Big Cry For Help by Sam Rebelein - Brilliantly plotted and paced. I really enjoyed this twisty story and consider it one of my favorites in the anthology.
The Devil's Road by Nick Roberts - Nick and I are in the same HWA chapter, and his story is set in West Virginia. Obviously, I have a soft spot. Even if I didn't, I'd still love The Devil's Road because it's fantastic!
Wilding by Ali Seay - This story is diabolical. It's fun. It's grisly. And, well...you just need to read it.
Random Acts by Jonathan Rae Rivera - If you love twists...this is the story for you!
Checkmate by Mike Marcus - Cops interrogating a killer. You won't believe what they learn. I genuinely loved this story.
My Flesh Was Made to Be Eaten by K. Mason - If you like stories that make your stomach want to turn inside out? You've found your jam. This is viscerally disturbing.
Conflict Resolution by David Rider - An all-round excellent story...with a nice little twist you won't see coming. Super fun, and David is an amazing writer.

Oh man, happy fall, over the bodies and the heads! I loved this anthology of horror stories. My favorite was Checkmate. Excellent plotting, backstory and pacing, I enjoyed it the most. Each story was great, this was just my favorite. Enjoy!
