[Monster]

Rate this book
He was born without eyes, nose or mouth, just a piece of rotting flesh, a cruel and terrible monster.

He had eyes for only one person, his creator, Feng Yeran: a terminally ill, ambitious scientist.

He had only one wish, to get him. That included getting his love, his everything, to be with him forever―

For that he would give everything; anyone who dared to lay their hands on Feng Yeran would be doomed.

Younger Yandere Monster Top X Weak Researcher Bottom

Preface:

There were four pieces of playdough on the table, of different sizes. Little Feng Hua was puzzled.

—Feng Hua: Ye’er, how do we make a small house out of these four pieces of playdough?

—Feng Yeran: Squeeze them into the shape you want. This one is the roof, the biggest one is the walls, this one is the doors and windows, and the last small one is the chimney.

—Feng Hua: There are so many coloured pencils and pastels here!

—Feng Yeran: When we finish the house, let’s paint the background of the house, the earth, the green grass, the blue sky and the white clouds.

—Feng Hua: And paint the two of us!

—Feng Yeran: Yes, one adult and one child!

—Feng Hua: We’ll be together forever!

怪物 may have broken my mind a little more than I expected. Yes, mind. The insanity was palpable. Every chapter kept me on edge, even the quiet moments. Especially the quiet moments. They felt like the breath before a scream, the stillness before everything collapses.

"But, it’s already the best possible ending for them. They fulfill their common wish in this world. Feng Yeran’s gift saves Feng Hua, and Feng Hua fulfills Feng Yeran’s wish. In the wasteland, the monster created the last “paradise”."

The final arc spirals into chaos and confusion, but somehow, it pulls everything together in a heartbreakingly beautiful way. We learn that the original story was much simpler, even tender: Feng Hua got his wish, and Feng Yeran truly loved him. They shared some blissful days but an inevitable situation still crept into their love story. And Feng Hua couldn’t let go. So he did something to try to deflect the truth.

I don't want to spoil anything because it's much bittersweet to go into the book fully blind. I had a lot of guesses to which some of them are right but the end still punched a hole in my existence. It's much better like that. And that last hurrah for Feng Hua, that last creation; it’s that open-endedness, the fragile hope, that makes the ending so bittersweet. After all they’ve endured, I want nothing more than for them to finally have a full life together. It's just so sad. I pray for it to never end.

On the other side, I don't fully believe that Feng Yeran is "trash," as some of what the other readers have said. The book itself had pointed out that the creations should never give the key, so that it will never end. But I still get them why they say that though. Everything's full of half-truth and half-lie.

In addition to these, I love the imagery in this book. Especially when Feng Yeran’s paranoia is getting described. We were told the Adesir could control emotions and Feng Yeran often wonders if the love or jealousy he feels is even his own. And Feng Yeran’s paranoia stems from the fear that Feng Hua might be influencing his emotions, blurring the line between real feelings and manipulation. It mirrors the eerie, unsettling nature of the way Feng Hua’s love was shown, and makes Feng Yeran’s eventual reciprocation feel more like reluctant surrender than true affection. You will appreciate this sentiment once you've finished the whole book because it will very much make sense.

Anyway, it took me a whole day to collect my thoughts after finishing the book. I lowkey wished this is HE. I fucking wish! But it just cannot be. Not in this timeline. May both of them find each other in their next lives, over and over again. Fully happy, healthy, and free from any pain.

A short, gory, scary, painful, yet chokingly emotional and loving read.

This book was so deep, and the world was so intricately woven that the author had to write an analysis of her own book as the last chapter (which I honestly found to be funny). It is not for the light-hearted, for sure. Neither is it for the ones who like a devoted romance with rational characters.

The male lead is quite cruel, so is the protagonist at times. But there's something so enthralling about this read that makes it a solid 4-star read for me.

this managed to surpass my expectations by a lot. i dont even know from where to begin without spoiling anything since i believe the best way to get into this is blind.

the way the story was structured was really interesting and how all the little details came together by the end to paint the bigger picture. you definitely need to finish the entire book to fully understand the characters and what actually happened. it might sound really complicated initially but when u reach the end it isnt at all and thats one of the things i liked about it.

another thing i really liked about this was the atmosphere and suffocating feeling some scenes had as well as the intensity of emotions. i cried multiple times trough out the novel because of this.

the relationship between the main characters is another thing i want to touch a bit on. it definitely is a bit strange but it was really interesting to read about them and, because of the stuff that gets revealed at the end, for the majority of the story u are forced to perceive it differently than it actually is. their ending was anticipated, in a way, but it was still really emotional.

the novel isn’t perfect, but i think is worth reading especially considering how short it is compared to most danmei.

i want to reread this at some point tbh

I might be a little biased and generous when rating it but this lovely heartbreaking novel got me to actually read with my own eyes.
One of a kind reading experience, confusing timelines, confusing pov, unlikable characters- all of it made sense by the end.
I love it. It’s not perfect but it’s memorable and gripping. I’m not going to say more because I think it’s good to go in blind. But beware: gore and violence.

The old tale about a scientist's hybris made flesh, about obsession, eros and thanatos - danmei edition. I appreciate what it's going for, and it's certainly ambitious, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. Despite being so short, it also drags. tldr: there's a good story in there, but boy, does it need editing.

The last chapter is the author providing an analysis of their own work, which amused me, because the story itself already explaines too much for my taste and would profit from more ambiguity.

At times, I was really confused but everything made sense at the end - and it broke my heart reading those parts. The story is beautifully written.

Overall, I highly recommend this novel. At first, the beginning, especially the first chapter, may seem confusing and slow-paced, but as you continue reading, you'll come to realize how necessary it was for the plot.

I felt the relationship between the main characters was a little bit disturbing at first, but it ends up being a beautiful yet unconventional way of love. The ending is both wonderful and heartbreaking, leaving me with a sense of satisfaction while also wanting to read it again soon...

Spoiler!

This part, oh god, the way this part broke my heart...

"‘Please love me,’ the monster said to the prince. ‘I can become what you love. I can give you anything.’

The prince would never love it.

But that was the monster’s wish!"

It was filled with angst, obsession and yet the ending was sweet and also made me cry at 4am.

Summary: Feng Yeran is a researcher with terminal stomach cancer who's life work is about to be born. A monster, Feng Hua, with a special bloodline is created and slowly grows from a lump to a child to a teenager and to a young man and since the very beginning he is in love with his creator.

Sad, angsty, unpredictable, good characters, and sexy.

Honestly, a fantastic short read! Really well written plot.

I might need to read again to fully understand it, but 5/5 skulls from me!

I’m not sure if I can classify the ending as happy or sad? Bittersweet?
