When I left my world behind, I thought I knew what to expect. I was going to bide my time and find my strength to return home and claim my House back.
But Earth is far from the safe place I thought it would be.
War has a different face here, but it still follows my every step. Prime necromancers are after me, and the only way I can survive them is to work with terrans who hide their secrets even better than me.
The necromancers are not alone. People who shouldn’t exist at all are hiding in plain sight. They’re determined to cross the Gateway to Gaena, and take what they claim is rightfully theirs. The only thing standing in their way is me and my new, unusual friends.
And Mace.
The Winter prince I left behind in Gaena, sure that I would never see him again for as long as I lived. But he’s here, and he remembers, and he’ll stop at nothing to get his revenge for what he thinks I did to him.
With Hiss by my side and the New Orleans Shade alive under me, I will do whatever it takes to keep Mace safe, and to keep these strangers from taking over my world. Even if I have to pay for it with my life.
Elo, as she is calling herself left her homeland and made it to the New Orleans Shade where she is sure she can recover her strength before returning home to reclaim her house. Unfortunately, she quickly realizes that the Shade is not the safe place she thought it would be for her. She is forced to work with allies (of a sort) to track down, and hopefully eliminate the prime necromancers that are relentless in their pursuit of her. The Winter Prince, Mace, the fae she thought she could love also wants her and his intentions are not good, he wants revenge for wrongs he believes she committed. Compelling, and beautifully well written characters trying to survive the deadly intentions of others. Absolutely fantastic read with magical battles, suspense, and plenty of unexpected, sometimes surprising twists in the plot that kept me engrossed from the first page to the last. I can't wait for the next book in this series, I absolutely love it.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
This is the 2nd book in this series and you definitely need to read these in order. Elo left left the captivity of Mace by putting him to sleep. Unfortunately, when he comes to, he believes that Elo tried to kill him and he is out for blood.
While trying to recover her strength, Elo teams up with some allies to try to stop some necromancers that have come after her, as well as others.
There are quite a few twists in the story that you don’t see coming. This book kept me reading until I finished it. And if the course the ending left me so ready for the next book.
This second book is fast paced and non stop action from the get go as we continue on with Elo’s journey. It’s a well written and highly entertaining read with some extraordinary characters and a gripping storyline full of lies and betrayal as Elo is hunted by Mace and the necromancers. Battles, magic, mystery, suspense and twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat, you will not be able to put this down!
Elo has left her homeland on the run trying to start again. Things are not going as she expects. She is being chased by two strangers. She meets a young woman that tries to help her. Turns out her and her father need her help catching them. She just wants to get back to her homeland. Mace is has been turned by his father and the magic. He now thinks Elos is the enemy.
I am not even going to say anymore. As I am going to ruin the story for others. This story really hooked from the beginning to the end. You will truly enjoy this story and series the author has written. There is something for everyone in this story. I highly recommend reading this, can't wait for more from the author.
A good story overall. The opening scenes are rather dismal. The broken nature of Gaena is imposed once again even onto the New Orlean's Shade. Elo finds herself in one bad situation after another, but, even through it all, she stays true to herself. Mace is also back under his father's thumb. The ending is rather dour. I expect that the rest of the series will make up for it.
Another great read that I really enjoyed. Elo is learning that there is a new enemy that will destroy all to get what they want. With new allies Elo is ready to fight for what is right. With Mace still after her, he will do anything to end her. Still lies and betrayal, this story will have you hooked. The ending omg I need to know wtf is going to happen next.
I voluntarily reviewed this Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
Great characters and a storyline full of action and intrigue! At the start Elo is in hiding in the New Orleans shade and Mace is a captive of his own family, definitely not a good situation. New threats and dangers seem to pop up from all angles and plot twists abound leading to a very climactic ending, in fact it's a real kicker of an ending but not a cliffhanger so no stars deducted. I can't wait for the next in series!
Eli’s story in D.N. Hoxa’s Death Spell (The New Orleans Shade Book 2) is a wonderfully convoluted one with neatly complex characters from the lead on down (Mace in particular is really shaping up). At the same time this is an easy to follow and darn right fun book. Neat trick to pull that all off but it’s done in grand (and superbly written) fashion here. I loved this story and most definitely highly recommend it.
Death Spell (The New Orleans Shade Book 2), my ninth read from author D.N. Hoxa. Well-written & enjoyable fantasy with a unique twist that makes it a can't-put-down read. I always look forward to the next work from her. “I received a free Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I'll be reading more from this author! (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
So good! While I did like the first, it felt slow, as most “pilot” stories (and shows) do. This had so much more action in it. Elo really gets a raw deal for how nice she is and how she just wants peace. I can’t wait to read the third book and hopefully find out who these new key (Julie, Mandar, etc) players REALLY are! I hope the Winter King gets what’s coming to him and more; and that Mace gets some justice!

This book was definitely better than the first book and there was a lot more action in this book than there was in the first. Elo she’s not sure who she needs to trust. The people that she trusted ended up stabbing her in the back and the people she doesn’t trust ended up becoming allies. She does meet Mace again but he does not remember her. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series to see how things go between her and mace.
At the beginning, I had difficulties to get into book 2. I was confused about Mace, and Elo seemed to know a lot about earth but how? While book 1 was solely focused on their relationship, book 2 brings lots of new characters, friends and enemies. This is a good thing as the plot gets more interesting. The end is leaving me wanting more. 3.7
Eli and Mace are in a pickle as the story starts and it gets better from there. New and old characters show up and they must do their best to survive. It was entertaining, fun , and dangerous as I had my fingers crossed that Elo and Mace would survive. Half the fun was seeing what each had to face. Enjoyed the story and watching them grow.
Taran/Elo stays in New Orleans and yearns for Prince Mace. Things get very complicated, with five distinct groups all fighting each other. The sidhe make an appearance, both the light and the single dark survivor. Good well written. Aged 13yrs+. A great pity the rest of the series is not available yet on kindle unlimited.
