Whether they're making popcorn, playing checkers, or putting on jammies, both parents and children alike will relate to this beloved and cherished story. A perfect way to help children become comfortable with their babysitter!
Mercer Mayer'sLittle Critter stories, which address all the major issues of growing up, are perennial favorites for generations of readers, both young and old!
Mercer Mayer is an American children's author and illustrator. He has published over 300 books, using a wide range of illustrative styles. Mayer is best known for his Little Critter and Little Monster series of books.
I'm a sucker for Mercer Mayer's work. I love it so much, especially since my family and I often read the books together as I grew up. Everything about it, from the simple, heartwarming, often silly stories, to the eye-catching and instantly-recognizable artwork... 5/5 stars. Reading this was a nostalgia trip.
My children absolutely adore this book. Reading literature is so important to the development of a child's mind, and I cannot think of thing I would rather do then sit down to read to them in the evenings. Imagination and growth are so vital in those so young.
I would put this in the little bit older child category, or maybe this is how you develop a sense of humorous irony in a child, the reading says wonderful things but the pictures provide a whole different story. My son liked it but once again, Your child may learn too much. This was a good read.
These Little Critter books are so fun. In this one the parents leave Little Critter and his baby sister home with a babysitter. Of course, everything Little Critter tells the reader is shown in the illustrations to be the opposite of what he is saying. Funny story, exhausted babysitter.
One of the funnier books for parents to read to kids. The illustrations are ones that every babysitter can recognize, especially when watching more than one child.
Just me and Babysitter is a Little Critter Book. This series of books was one of my favorites when I was a kid and integral to my process of learning to read. This one is about the main character describing how he is so good for the babysitter when his mom and dad are away. Its funny because it gives the reader the perspective of what a child finds to be good verses what the adult finds. For example the main character says that he doesn't fight at bed time, just goes right to sleep. However; the pictures show that to be not true. He doesn't go straight to bed, he stays up and watches tv. In fact he thinks he's been wonderful but when the parents come home they see an exhausted babysitter passed out on the couch and the children wide awake in front of the tv. So funny since I can definitely relate to it!
Personal Reaction: The liked this book. I thought it was funny and I even remember reading some of the little critter books when I was a kid.
I think that this book is probably better suited for kindergarteners and first graders because the language used is simplistic. There aren't any words that would be too challenging for the students. I think it is also a fun book to read aloud because the words and illustrations are opposite of each other. After reading a page, you could ask the students what is really going on. When they answer, that would be a good time to discuss why the kids aren't doing what they said they were doing. I think that this would be good to read when talking about responsibility and how it's always important to obey and respect your parents or your teachers.
Big Fan of Little Critter books currently. This one is not a top favorite but we like the series. This was a funny read but also modeled "bad" behavior with not going to bed.
They're short, they're funny, they're topical, and they're cheap.
This one shows how Little Critter behaves with his babysitter.
The text suggests that he's a model child - he helps out, he goes to bed on time, that sort of thing.
The illustrations show that he kinda makes a mess, and refuses to go to bed, and his sitter falls asleep before he does. Hee.
My nieces know that this is unrealistic behavior, but that just makes it funnier to them. We talk about how they *should* act when we read this book...!
Man, Little Critter is a little shit. I loved these books as a kid, but he's not a good kid, and his babysitter is not a good babysitter. I feel for her, but she's gotta bust out some child management techniques. Anyway, I'm not a fan of books like this for young children -- books that encourage and romanticize being rude and thoughtless and selfish and disrespectful. Childhood is precious and children deserve to have fun, but childhood is not an excuse for thinking it's cute to make other people's lives harder, and that's what books like this celebrate.
Just Me and My Babysitter is about critter who is being babysat with his sister. He claims to be very good at helping the babysitter out with the chores and going to bed on time. It's interesting because the words are saying one thing, but by the pictures you can tell that Critter is not actually being helpful. I think that the words are from the perspective of the child (Critter) and the pictures are from the perspective of the Adults. (Babysitter)
This was just as good as any Little Critter book - Julia liked it maybe a little more than usual because having a babysitter outside of the family is alien to her. Since the babysitter in this story is a cow it's obvious she's not a family member and she picked right up on that and asked some questions about the lack of babysitters for her. :)
