The title of this first work of fiction by Carole Coo caught my attention and I'm pleased it did. It is the story of Maureen whose married life comes to a crashing halt after she is diagnosed with breast cancer and requires a mastectomy. Her husband drops her at the door to the hospital and while she is recovering from her surgery, he makes up an excuse that one of their daughters is sick, so he doesn't have to visit her.
Upon her subsequent return home she uncovers his deceit and then suffers another blow when he sees her getting out of the shower and immediately leaves the house. He does not return until the next day when he announces that he could not possibly stay with her.
Maureen finds her unknown inner strength with the sympathetic help of her new elderly neighbour Mrs B. Mrs B provides practical help and emotional support and welcomes the opportunity to be a de facto grandmother to Maureen's children. Maureen has not worked since before she had her daughters plus the family recently moved countries to enable Maureen's husband to advance in his career.
I felt Maureen's pain when her world seemed to end. She was frightened and very hurt and after gaining a little more confidence she courageously planned a simple destiny for herself. However destiny is one thing that cannot be planned.
The book is an easy light read and a completely different genre which I very much enjoyed!
