Oh! great, whose real name is Ito Ōgure (大暮維人 Ōgure Ito) is a Japanese manga artist most recognized for the manga series Tenjho Tenge and Air Gear. In 2006, he received the Kodansha Manga Award for shōnen for Air Gear. Apart from working with manga, he designed some of the alternate character outfits in the PlayStation 2 version of Namco's 3D fighting game Tekken 5, and a guest character in Soul Calibur IV named Ashlotte.
His pseudonym "Oh! great" is a play on words. His pen name, written in Japanese order, is "Ōgure Ito", which is pronounced similarly to and can be romanized the same as the Japanese rendering of the English words "Oh great," ōgurēto. Furthermore, "Oh" can mean "king" in Japanese, making it possible to read the name as "the great king".
I've mentioned this in a prior review in the same breath as Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, which is probably the highest praise I can give to stories about stories of how the divine breaches into the mundane and all we can do is to bear witness to it unfold.
I don't have much to say about this volume mostly it's just some feel-good school kid paranormal urban fantasy stuff, but the ideas are clever and the artwork is lovely so I just rolled with it. 3.5 stars.
Bakemonogatari funciona por acumulación. Cada nuevo tomo, cada nueva aberración, nos da algo más de contexto. Nos hace entender algo más cómo funciona el mecanismo interno de este mundo. Es decir, cómo al final todo se articula por dos polos: las criaturas que poseen a las chicas son un reflejo de sus emociones, pero no tienen agencia comprensible para el ser humano, y todo se define a través de la relación entre Araragi y Sengoujahara, incluso cuando no lo parece a primera vista.
Al terminar la historia de Mayoi Hachikuji, el caracol (o la vaca) perdido, es donde esto se hace más evidente. Quien está perdida es Araragi, porque no quiere ver a su familia, y quien está perdida es Sengoujahara, porque no quiere admitir que no es capaz de ver a Hachikuji, construyendo así lo que será la lógica inherente de todo Bakemonogatari: todo trata siempre sobre la relación romántica que se construye entre ellos dos. Lo que rehuyen, lo que abrazan, lo que no entienden y lo que sólo creen entender.
Esto también se aplica a los personajes, de momento, secundarios. Aquí aprendemos más sobre Tsubasa Hanekawa, sabiendo que fue poseída por un espíritu gatuno y que en su casa ha sido maltratada en el pasado, pero que, a diferencia de los otros dos, no se ve afectado por los poderes de Hachikuji: ella, simplemente, vuelve a casa. Y si bien no sabemos aún cuál de las dos es, sólo puede ser dos cosas, o resignación por su destino o aceptación de que el maltrato no la define. Algo que la ata, prácticamente automáticamente, a los mismos principios que Araragi y Sengoujahara. Especialmente cuando aquí ya se hace obvio que siente algo más que amistad por el primero.
En cualquier caso, en el ámbito técnico, la cosa ha terminado de asentarse. En dibujos y composición ya carece de cualquier clase de problema, por mínimo que sea, y si bien la sexualización de los personajes femeninos sigue rozando lo grotesco, acaba pasándose por alto por lo prodigioso de todo lo demás.
Porque si algo es innegable es que la adaptación de Oh! Great es prodigiosa. Algo no tan fácil incluso cuando el original es una maravilla absoluta. Y por eso, por la acumulación que hace que este tomo ya sea absolutamente imprescindible, lo celebramos.
After meeting lost child Mayoi Hachikuji, Koyomi Araragi has decided to help her find her way home at last but as an aberration whose time has stopped it is going to take an expert like Meme Oshino to let our main boi save the day. This volume of the manga adapts the final part of the Lost snail story from the original light novel (which is the last story of the first part according to my books.) To be honest I am huge fan of Oh! Great's style which is capable of incredible realism but can also become cartoonish like in a fight scene between Mayoi and Koyomi mimicking the style of mangaka Fujio Akatsuka but is also able to create strange unreal designs that may or may not hide clues from the book inside the artwork or change how something as simple as a character's eyes can change the ever changing back and forth often found in this series. In fact seeing Tsubasa Hanekawa not only showing off characteristics of a cat made me even more excited for when we get to see her story later on but I also enjoyed the brief color image of Black Hanekawa but that is a character you will not have to worry about quite yet. :)
With the help of his friends and a strong belief in helping others (and also a bit of a sad perverted streak) Koyomi can't help but help others even if they are aberrations or the rest of the world tells him to leave them alone. Of course as perverted as Koyomi can be just wait till you see the aberration coming up next. She'll knock your block off if you are unlucky enough. :)

I think I might have said in Volume 1, the first time I read it, but... I think I prefer Oh!Great's vision over Shinbo and SHAFT's ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (I think one thing is that Oh!Great's art-style better matches the style used for the Kizu- movie trilogy, which is just leaps and bounds ahead of the main TV/OVA style SHAFT used.)
I think I'm repeating myself here as well, assuming I've written same in a review for the light novel, but I find "Mayoi Snail" to just be a better story than "Hitagi Crab." Senjougahara's story felt more like a "pilot" to me, and Hachikuji's feels like maybe the first "real" story. This is, of course, following original release order of the novels, in which prequel Kizu- was released after the Bake- volumes. Which I think is a good idea overall, though Kodansha/Vertical apparently disagreed. The Aberrations in NISIOISIN's work seem largely original, or at least they're yokai of such obscurity that I cannot recognize or research them. So having had something as commonly-known as a vampire kick things off would give a different impression. Senjougahara is a fun character, but works pretty much just because her story is out of the way almost immediately, and she's freer to banter with Araragi from the second story (i.e. "Mayoi Snail") onward, which is, generally speaking, what she's mostly good for (and indeed I stop liking her a bit in the novels after she simmers down...).

Bon, j’avais adoré le premier tome. Le deuxième, j’avais eu un peu plus de mal et là, j’adore ce troisième. Le personnage Mayoi m’a beaucoup touché !
En effet, dans le dernier tome Koyomi a croisé une jeune fille perdue : Mayoi. Cette dernière cherche sans cesse la maison de sa mère, mais elle ne le trouve pas. Koyomi fini par supposer qu’elle doit sans doute être atteinte par une chimère.
Ainsi, il demande à Hitagi d’aller voir Mémé. Ce dernier est un expert des chimères et il pourra sans doute lui apporter les réponses qu’il cherche. Sauf que la réalité est parfois beaucoup plus dure à entendre qu’on ne le voudrait. Ce qu’il va apprendre sur cette gamine, sur la fameuse chimère, est bien plus triste qu’il ne s’y attendait et surtout bien plus compliqué.
Je reprochais au premier tome de ne pas avoir d’actions, car en réalité, le scénario était un peu long. Ici, pourtant, il n’y a pas d’action non plus, mais l’émotion qu’on nous transmet me le fait oublier !
L’histoire est vraiment touchante et pleine d’émotion. J’aime vraiment ce principe dans Bakemonogatari, de mettre en avant des troubles et souffrances à travers des chimères.
En bref, j’ai aimé ce troisième tome et j’ai hâte de voir quelle autre chimère nos deux compagnons vont rencontrer à l’avenir. J’aime vraiment de plus en plus Hitagi, surtout dans ce tome. J’ai hâte de découvrir son évolution 🙂
Thus ends another chapter in the story of Bakemonogatari, wrapping up this chapter with a nice and neat package and moving into the next. I’m continually blown away but the feeling of the story and how it just digs deep and makes you think and get involved just like Araragi in this volume. I feel like a good story is key in its ability to make you feel emotion and this continues to deliver. Highly suggest the continuation of the series and can’t wait to jump into volume four. Perfect!
De momento no es el que más me ha gustado, aunque sigue cumpliendo bastante bien, continua abusando del ecchi (pero eso es una parte inseparable de Monogatari). En resumen sigue en la misma línea.
I've already watched most of the Monogatari franchise including all of Bakemongatari in anime form. The manga is just a retelling of the stories from the series and their light novel origins. But the artwork is very good. This volume features Tsubasa Hanekawa on the cover and she does make an appearance in the story, but after a brief interaction with Araragi and Mayoi, she mostly disappears from the main action. The bulk of this volume is still taken up by Araragi & Senjougohara helping Mayoi find her way "home". Tsubasa can see Mayoi, while Hitagi cannot...and the reason for it is interesting. I read this manga in one sitting one lazy afternoon.
