This author, essayist, biographer and historian of the early 19th century wrote newspaper articles under the pseudonym Jonathan Oldstyle to begin his literary career at the age of nineteen years.

Historical works of Irving include a five volume biography of George Washington (after whom he was named) as well as biographies of Oliver Goldsmith, Muhammad, and several histories, dealing with subjects, such as Christopher Columbus, the Moors, and the Alhambra, of 15th-century Spain. John Tyler, president, appointed Irving to serve as the first Spanish speaking United States minister to Spain from 1842 to 1846.
A fun little short short that i read in the book “World’s greatest Short Stories”!
This story follows a “manly” aunt who moves into a new house when her “weak” husband dies and the new house is very….interesting.
The writing was really easy to read and the story was genuinely entertaining at times.
However,it has it’s fair share of problems.First of all,the word “manly” is very outdated and the fact that that word is used so many times is an issue. Also,in the middle of the story,a narrator and a gentleman keeps talking about the story which definitely took me out.
At least it's a little bit better than the grandfather one, for the horror part, but the atmosphere of the story's world, the previous has it better. 3/10 too.
