It should be a dream assignment—leave my boring day-to-day routine and travel to a seaside mansion to interview superstar author Jack R. R. Bestia. Who wouldn’t want that?
Me, that’s who.
He has a reputation for being reclusive and temperamental, but that’s not why I’m leery of the assignment. It’s because the first (and last) time I met Jack… well, let’s just say I didn’t make a good impression.
When I get to the mansion—which is more like a secluded castle—things don’t go much better. I’m sure he’s going to throw me out entirely. The only way I manage to squeak in is by signing a massive non-disclosure agreement. And I soon figure out why.
Jack has a secret—and it’s a big one.
Now that iron-clad contract I signed means I have to stay here until his long-overdue book is finished—and he’s not going to make it easy.
Jack acts every bit as beastly as the tabloids claimed, and I feel like a fairytale princess trapped in his tower. But every once in a while I get a glimpse of the charming (not to mention super sexy) man beneath the growly exterior and I wonder… could this beast be tamed?
Bookworm and the Beast is a full-length hot romantic comedy take on the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale. It’s a standalone enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity, slow burn romance with no cheating or cliffhangers but plenty of humor and heart.
Award-winning author Tru Taylor writes small town romance that's hot and sunny (and a little bit funny.)
She runs on Coke Zero and dark chocolate, lives for lunches with her girlfriends, and drives to the town beach several times a week to watch the sun set over the water.
She loves LOVE and will attempt to turn any show or movie she's watching into a romance whether it is one or not. Star Wars? A romance. Lord of the Rings? Clearly a romance. The Expendables? Okay, well not even Tru can redeem that one.
When she's not writing, Tru enjoys watching movies and reading books with happy endings, spending time with Mr. Tru and her two kids, and sneaking Hershey's Kisses from the top shelf of the freezer throughout the day. (Top shelf because... two kids. Enough said.)
Tru is the author of the Eastport Bay small town rom com series and loves living in a small New England town where she's surrounded every day by the beautiful coastal setting you see brought to life in her books.
I've had a hard time writing reviews lately. Every time I sit down to actually put my feelings about a book to paper (or screen) nothing comes out (I know, not a great thing for a book blogger 🤦♀️). But I got so frustrated with this book that I had to sit down and vent about this book.
Just because I need to vent doesn't mean that it didn't have good parts. But that's part of the problem. The book could have been great. I actually enjoyed the Beauty & the Beast retelling. I got a kick out of seeing the characters in a new setting and modern time. I loved still getting some of the names. But the problem was, there was very little on screen time for the main characters once she became his captive. To me, it was just 3 interactions and they they were sharing "I love yous" and that left my head spinning. I realized that more time did pass, but I didn't see any of it on the page. I was told it happened. I was told they took morning walks together every day, they ate together. So the feelings came out of nowhere. And that left me rolling my eyes, and feeling like I missed something huge, because the connection wasn't there for me.
Not to mention, because I knew it was a retelling, I knew that there would be something coming that would break them up. I was disappointed that Jack automatically jumped to conclusions and convicted Bonnie of wrongdoing without even talking to her. And I honestly hated how easily she forgave him.
I honestly only finished the book because I was already so far into it. I didn't see a point in DNFing it at 90%.
But like I said, this book could have been great, and it ended up being ok, with some likeable parts.
for the past few days, i haven't been able to finish a book, and this one was the first i actually wanted to continue reading.
this is a beauty and the beast retelling (i love that), he's a writer and she's a journalist, she has to interview him and after a bad meeting, they start to get along. one day she enters a room she should and he forces her to stay in his house until the deadline for his new book because he thinks she might spoil the book if she gets out of his sight.
i love Jack and Bonnie, if you want a romcom this is the book for you.
You can’t truly understand the meaning of the word “humiliation” until you’ve ugly-cried in front of the most gorgeous man you’ve ever seen in your life—then been escorted away by security.
A solid 4.5 star read rounded up to five. I REALLY liked this book. I honestly wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. I laughed. I swooned. I cringed.
This was one of those classic fairytale retellings of beauty and the beast. I enjoyed both the Jack and Bonnie characters, I thought that they were both fun and interesting.
The only reason that it lost a half of a star for me because the pace dragged a bit for me from about 50%-75%. Oddly, there were a bunch of Bonnie chapters in a row and I feel like if the author had added some Jack chapters in there it wouldn't have dragged for me. I'm not sure why the author did it but on a re-read, I might skim that part.
I LOVED the grand gesture after the dark moment. I thought that it was super cute and it MAY have brought a little tear to my eye.
The steam wasn't very explicit but it was there towards the end.
My first read by the author and I'm already looking forward to more of her books. This was a very entertaining and new take on Beauty and the Beast. It was sweet, fun, and steamy. I absolutely loved Bonnie and Jack. They have amazing chemistry and just work together even though they were complex characters. Their story will make you swoon and laugh. Overall, it was an entertaining and cute read.
Meh. I hoped for more and the connection was …fine? This is standard. Didn’t love didn’t hate and am struggling to remember more than the hero is kind of the hot version of GRRM of GOT fame and that was distracting and the dark moment was too predictably OTT. So yeah just ok.
This is a cute retelling of Beauty and the Beast. The author brings strong characters in Jack as the beast and Bonnie is the beauty. She does a terrific job developing their story and paints her scenes perfectly. It's a sweet ,emotional story and I enjoyed reading.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
The plan for this was good, but sth went wrong in the process.
I got the feeling that everything was rushed. The relationship between main characters went from WE JUST MET EACH OTHER AND THERE IS JUST HATE to literal love confession and plans to start living together in like few pages.
I don't know if it's because I prefer slow burns, but they just didn't buy me.
This is a new author to me, and I thought it sounded cute. It is an updated twist on the fairytale story we know.
Jack and Bonnie have an awkward moment, a few more a while later, but finally figure out how well they compliment each other. This was easy to read and enjoy.
Bookworm and the beast is Jack & Bonnie's story. It takes on a new fairytale twist with rom com throughout that will make you giggle & swoon. This is a slow burn but well worth the wait because soon the pages will start getting hotter as the heat goes up a notch.
This is sometimes what I wonder how authors would get inspiration from. I loved listening to this while working. I had to stop this to focus a couple of times on work. Truly, these voice actors brought the characters to life. Sometime you just need a little rom.com to get love back in the air..
I'm a big fan of fairytale retellings, and this charming modern take on "Beauty and the Beast" is one of the best ones I've read in recent memory.
Fantasy writer Jack R.R. Bestia has a major problem: he's suffering from a severe case of writer's block, and with the publication date for the seventh and final book of his mega-successful Onyx Throne series quickly approaching, he fears his career might be over. Unaware of his struggles, Jack's publisher has arranged an interview for him with an important New York-based newspaper to build hype for the release. Reporter Bonnie Hamelin reluctantly accepts the assignment, but after a previous encounter with Jack ended in her humiliation, she's not looking forward to seeing him again. Unfortunately, their second meeting isn't much better than the first, and a misunderstanding results in a month-long "vacation" for Bonnie as a "guest" in Jack's home. As they're forced to spend time together under the same roof, the attraction between them grows, and Bonnie realizes that Jack might not be quite as "beastly" as he first seemed. A series of past betrayals have left him deeply mistrustful of love, however. Will he be able to figure out a way to put the past behind him so that he can move forward with Bonnie?
Jack and Bonnie were an incredibly entertaining couple, with tons of chemistry and witty banter. I loved the slow build of their romance and couldn't wait for them to finally take things to the next level. Bonnie was an endearingly awkward protagonist, and I loved her sunny disposition and totally related to her love of books. As for Jack, his outer grumpiness was protecting a tender heart and tremendous capacity for love; he had been hurt so many times in the past that it was tough for him to open himself up again, but Bonnie showed him that it was worth taking a risk for the right person.
In addition to Bonnie and Jack, I loved the book's quirky, endearing secondary characters. I particularly enjoyed the sweet flirtation between Bonnie's father, Bill, and Jack's housekeeper, Mrs. Potts. Jack's younger brother, tech genius Hunter, was also intriguing, and I'm excited to learn more about him in the next book of the series.
In short, I highly recommend this funny, sweet, and heartwarming tale for all fans of contemporary romance and romantic comedy. It was the first book I've read by this author, but it certainly won't be the last.

A fairytale retelling with a romcom twist! Tru Taylor delivers the delightfully fun and unlikely romance between Bonnie and Jack. He is a famous bestselling author and she is the fan he briefly met at signing that ended with her in teasers and him covered in her coffee. These two were just so freaking adorable and fun. Bonnie was just the cutest and as a fellow clumsy bookworm who adores her favorite author, I could totally relate. Jack was everything I love in a grumpy hero. Together these two were beyond fun, entertaining, and front heir hilariously awful meet cute they had me rooting for them to get to their happily ever after. Lovers of cute romcoms, this is for you!
Laney Scott and Roman Strong narrate. It was my first time listening to both and I really enjoyed them. Roman was the perfect surly Jack while Laney brought out all of Bonnie’s endearing qualities. Loved!
thought the story line was great, thought the characters were funny and relatable. I do feel like there were some short comings, I didn't like the argument in the last 20%. it was just predictable. I would've liked if there was something else in it's place.
I wish the epilogue was of the main couple, it was of Hunter (Jack's brother). I just feel like it would've been nice to see them in a few years.
I think this book would be a perfect palette cleanser!
Holy smokes I love this book so hard! I'm a HUGE fan of Beauty and the Beast, and this sweet steamy romcom absolutely checked all my boxes & filled me with joy! Jack and Bonnie are just utterly endearing and loveable! I cannot wait for Hunter's story! What a great read!
This was my first time reading author and I absolutely adored this really adorable and fun romance. This was a Beauty and the Beast story and you can see it with all the really cute names given to the characters in the story. It also is an at work romance as the two main characters are forced to work together because of their chosen careers.
The beast is Jack and he is an author. His book series sorta reminded me of the Harry Potter series and he needs to write his 7th book but his ex betrayed him in the worst way and so he has to come up with a new book, write it and by the books deadline and he pretty much has nothing. In addition he is told he must be interviewed for a publication to hype his new book that is coming out.
Bonnie is the beauty in this story and she comes to interview Jack for her magazine but he treats her horribly until he meets her and then she enchants him too until....
And because she violated his rules, he forces her to stay at the house while he finishes the book without contact with the outside world. And thats when she starts to enchant his entire household as well as him.
Can Jack write his book? Will the ex betray him again? Can Bonnie be trusted? Can Jack find his heart? I am not spoiling any of it. Read this story, if you love romances with a grumpy hero but one who has a heart filled with love, you will love Jack. And Bonnie was an awesome character who has a bit of an oversharer nervousness but also a kind and wonderful heart.
This was a really fun story. I wish it had more romance though with scenes with Jack and Bonnie. I felt the anger and avoidance Jack did in the story took away some from the romance. But I did love watching his hate turn to lust and fall for Bonnie.
I received a complimentary early release copy of this e-book from the author prior to release and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I am a suck·er for a Beauty and the Beast retelling. No lie, it could be a 2-star read and I'd walk away thinking... "Beauty and the Beast? Yeaa, solid." It doesn't take a whole lot to impress me overall when it comes to them. BUT I also hold them under a slightly harsher lens in some regard because I want them to be able to do BATB enough justice.
The couple things that kept this from being a 5-star read for me: 1. The pacing. I get that it took place over the span of a month or so, but while reading, it seemed like a bit of a whirlwind. I would have loved a little bit longer of a book, with more relationship development. 2. The BATB references were a little all over the place. Some were dead-on. Hello, Mrs. Potts. And others were just weird. Sterling Gaston? What? Why not Gaston Sterling? I didn't really understand the references and name choices being peppered in in random ways and then having MCs with the names Jack and Bonnie.
That being said, I pretty much loved it. And the moment Bonnie reads Jack's dedication page in his new book... I gasped. Bookworm and the Beast gave me all the BATB feels that I was looking for with a sexy/spicy edge.
Review:- I love modern day retellings of the beauty and the beast and this was one of the good ones..
Jack is the author of the onyx throne series and is a temperamental closed off person with trust issues who hates media and attention. He is the modern day beast living in a huge estate alone expect for his housekeepers and is a grumpy grouch.
Bonnie is a book reviewer and a rambling queen. She loves reading books cuz well she is an outline of belle but she is also a writer who has given up hope on her book that is until inspiration strikes her in the form of jack bestia.
I love how she takes him as her inspiration and he does her and how there is a flicker of chemistry between them that they just want to ignore but it isnt like that is going to happen ..or is it >? I like how their falling in loving is not rushed and is going at a slow gradual pace and it felt just right and kept it intrigued till the end. Both their meet-cutes are just soo laughable and adorable and the word play with the references from the fairytale version was a very joyful addiction to the story.
You guys know I am sucker for good endings and this one was a really good one and - ok no spoilers!! I loved this book and if you guys like modern beauty and the beast retellings which is a romantic comedy with partial enemies to lovers , forced proximity and a lowborn romance …this is just the book for you!!
I did love this book until roughly the 16th to 18th chapter hit. It just felt so rushed with the romance towards the end and it had so much potential to be more than that. I loved the dynamic of the characters. The book lover & author relationship. The forced proximity story line was great but the last few chapters dropped the rating down for me.
I loved this story!! The unique slant on this fairytale was excellently executed. The characters are complex, interesting and full of needed contradictions that make them realistic. This is a fun entertaining book. Enjoy!!💕💕💕💕💕
A very good book. It shows that true love can heal all your wounds. I loved Bonnie, she didn't cower for anyone and Jack was a really cute and alpha beast, liked him too
A, predicable, slow burn, well written beauty and the beast retelling, with some steamy-ish scenes. A grumpy author has lost his writing muse, until a determined reporter comes to interview him. I enjoyed it. 🙂
I really enjoyed this story! Bonnie and Jack, as the beauty and the beast respectively, are such great characters and it's easy to get lost in their story! It's a slow burn but sweet and heartwarming story, with amazing banter and great chemistry, an entertaining story and a great cast of characters! I am looking forward to read more from this author!
