The Nabob's Daughter

Rate this book
She’ll do anything to escape an arranged marriage. He’ll do anything to help her.

Honora Crauford relishes her life in India. So when her father informs her of his latest business transaction—marrying her off to a bankrupt nobleman in England—her only hope for returning home is to convince her betrothed, by whatever antics necessary, that a marriage to her comes at a cost that not even the greatest fortune can justify.

Graham Whitworth can hardly believe his wretched luck. It seems the only way to save his family’s insolvent estate is to comply with his father’s demands and marry the extremely wealthy, but utterly ridiculous, nabob’s daughter. But when Honora missteps, Graham discerns her farce and begins to see who she truly is—a most impressive lady. A lady likely capable of fixing his family’s financial troubles.

Realizing they both desire freedom, Graham and Honora join forces to restore the Whitworth estate and return Honora to her beloved India. But sometimes love has its own agenda, and the revoking of a once undesirable arrangement may just prove to be the greatest sacrifice of all.

If you're looking for an utterly delightful, charming, laugh out loud, hysterical, sweet, and all the other great accolades, this book is the one you need to drop everything for and read. I didn't want to put it down (but unfortunately life had other plans so I had to keep pausing). I loved every moment of this book. I bought copies for myself and my teenagers. They devoured faster than I did. And we shared with family members and they adored the book. It was quite the topic on our summer vacation.

Honora was such a fun, spunky, feisty, loveable character. Her antics will have you cringing and rolling on the floor laughing at the same time. Jess Heileman was super creative in her developing this story and character. All the plans that Honora has and sets into motion were genius. I'm telling you, if you want to send your daughter from her home in India to England and arrange her marriage, all while you stay home to settle up your business needs for a few months, you're in trouble! Hee Hee!!!

Then we add Graham into the mix. He was unhappily resigned to his fate of an arranged marriage. But salvation comes when she arrives and she's just plain awful. (You'll have to read to understand why). But when he becomes her partner in crime, everything just gets better and better. These two together are the best. They think they're clever and going to mess everything up, trick everyone and save the day by sending Honora back to India. Oh boy, do they have a lot of surprises in store for them.

And we can't forget about Graham's family. They sure aren't pleased with this arrangement. Some will try to befriend Honora just because they're so good. Others will be cowed by her. And another will not stand for any of her beyond ridiculous antics. How dare she, a Nabob's daughter, think she is better than them all. ;-)

And let's just hope and pray that Honora's father doesn't show up anytime too soon to thwart her plans of sailing happily back to India before he can get mad at her.

Oh, y'all this book is just too much fun. As I'm typing my thoughts, I just want to go back and devour this book again. I've been talking about it nonstop with several of my friends who have read it. We have some inside laughs going on because of different scenes with this book. One friend even has a memoji who personifies Honora. *clapping* Oh heavens, I'm giggling thinking about it.

As much as Honora tries to be a pill and disregarding of Graham's family, she truly has a heart of gold. Read the book and I think you'll come to love and adore her as much as myself and many other readers did. Jess Heileman, you just keep hitting it out of the ballpark with your books. I adore you and your writing!!! Thanks for writing books that I can happily and confidently recommend and share with friends, family and many, many others!!!

Content: Clean.

I received a copy from the author but have also bought several of my own copies. (Yes, you read that right...SEVERAL)! All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

What if you lived in India 🇮🇳 and your father practically sold you to marry a dude you’ve never met in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 …. What if you have to travel for weeks in a boat to get there alone… 🛶 🤭

What if you decide you somehow have to trash 🗑 this binding marriage contract📜….what if you and your betrothed despise each other and decide to join forces to show their family how much they hate each other and somehow break that contract… 🔪 👀🫖✨🤝

What if nothing goes as planned and you uncover a mystery, people from the past, secrets and create chaos galore? What if you host an Indian themed party in England and serve somewhat bitter lemonade? 👀

THIS BOOK HAS THAT!^^^

I love books that transport you to different settings. Books that explore different cultures and a fusion of them. This book has that and more. We have a colorful India with it it’s exotic spices and vibrant colors and we also have England with his charming manors and it’s elegant society. 🥻🫖✨🎩

The main character of the book,Honora, was absolutely amazing. She was headstrong, spirited, hilarious, witty and yet wise. Yet her personality was so unique I loved how the author showed her strong and vulnerable side! She was so chaotic, I couldn’t help but chuckle at many scenes with her crazy ideas 😂💖.

Then we have the other MC, Graham, who was incredible!💖💖💖 Honora and him were so so different and I think that’s what made their relationship work! They were a mess together but somehow throughout the book you see their growth and maturity and it’s amazing! He is reserved but then there are some scenes at the beach that will truly show you a side to him that few know 🤫.

This book features interesting places, sea coves, mysteries, chaos…
Enemies to colleagues to friends to lovers to…😏💖

So read it! You won’t regret it!
For my peeps wondering about pacing, it was a tad slow in the middle but then it picked up nicely! I also listened to the audiobook (which by the way was wonderful and I highly recommend it!)🥰

Let me direct you this way if ever you find yourself being like “I just want some good, but like, really good dual first POV Regency wholesome fun”. Do as I say, and not as I did, and do not sleep on this one.

If you listen closely you can hear my long-suffering TBR just sighing out a “Finally”. This has been under my “marriage of convenience must-read” list for so long because I skim blurbs and saw all I needed to see: arranged marriage. It is so good from beginning to end, I didn’t even mind the trope is actually class-difference-arranged-marriage-unarranging or “How to Lose a Viscount Before Dear Dad Arrives from India”. I tell you, I snickered, I swooned. You’re the ex-pat new-money heiress abruptly shipped off from the only home you’ve ever known, of course you’re going to have a grand ol’ time doing the gauche opposite of everything your etiquette tutor tortured-I mean-taught you and get yourself shipped right back. Dare I say Honora has very strong Heyer’s Grand Sophy vibes? The practical, laser-focused, highly competent, unabashed yet sympathetic heroine that just blows into a household to never be the same. And the just-as-resistant fiancée she wants to shake off, oh how magnificiently first and magnificiently hard he falls. While so doggedly scheming to not end up married to the most un-troll-like specimen of a flirty aristocrat who’s willing to friendzone himself to not scare her away, their complicitness, teasing, teamwork, self-sacrificing dum-dum moments, undeniable tension, just *curry-chef’s-kiss* Such a great proportion of internal and external conflict for this couple, I was so in suspense of how it would all work out, and, though I can admit to feeling less forgiving on a couple of instances, whoactuallycares, glad we can all move on and have such joyous conceding with all the misguided motivations and faulty reasonings, parallels and ironies just so full circle locked down. I adored it. New favorite. Happy romance reader, signing off.

Content notes: kissing only, teeny tiny mention of faith and God, toxic parent behavior.

Hilarious, yet oh, so sweet!

When I first saw this book, I thought, "What in the world is a nabob?" While I'm fascinated by the India tangent of the Regency era, I've never heard this term before. The second thing that grabbed me was the intriguing cover representation of Honora. Red hair? Freckles? Heterochromia? I LOVE it!

This story drew me right in from the very first page. Heileman has a way of writing that captures all attention and puts a goofy smile on a reader's face throughout the whole entire book. Not only is Honora precocious and feisty, but she's utterly hilarious and ingenious. Her plan to thwart her father's wishes had me laughing and cringing in all the ways and I just couldn't get enough, especially as she started to allow others into her secret. I was dying over the clapping and other attributes that made up her wickedly comical charade.

Honora is a fascinating character, with determination, bravery, and wit galore. Not only does she find herself in an undesirable position, but so does Graham. Graham. What a wonderful, flirty, charming master of swoon! I couldn't get enough of their interactions.

This delightful tale had beautiful descriptions of both India and England and their mash-up during the Regency times. I loved the flavor of the story almost as much as I loved the characters. Don't worry--it's not all slap-stick comedy. There are relationships to mend, mysteries to solve, and situations to resolve. I had a hard time putting this book down and enjoyed every single bit.

I Loved this one! Jess is consistently putting out books I love. This was just so well done. I was a little worried it wouldn't work but wow did it. Honora is a great character! She was so stubborn and just easy to like! Graham is awesome! I love when the leading man doesn't hide his feelings, it makes the book so much fun. Lots of good tension in this! And the kiss was worth waiting for! I loved how all the characters were flawed but you saw the good in them. I LOVED the end! That was so well done! SO believable and sweet! SO awesome twists and turns and great writing, wonderful characters might make this one of my favorites of the summer!
This is a proper romance with no mention of religion. No violence

An absolutely lovely story from Jess Heileman! The Nabob’s Daughter made me laugh and smile, and had me ignoring all my other responsibilities so I could keep on reading. It is unlike any other Regency I have read, as readers will learn about sides of life in that era that are often mentioned in these stories but rarely explored, like estate management. The inclusion of Indian culture also makes for unique situations and opportunities for swoony romantic moments. And The Nabob’s Daughter is most assuredly romantic—I’m so glad Graham’s perspective was included, since it just made me love him more. Don’t miss Heileman’s latest masterpiece! 4.5/5 stars

A new favorite and quite possibly the funniest HR I ever read.
description
What Fanned my Fondness:

♡Hilarious!!!

♡Judith is a cinnamon roll and I want her story told!

♡Protagonist is the MVP. Actually I can see why some people didn't rate this as higly as the romance paled compared to the just the sheer awesomeness and cleverness of the female lead.
description
But with so many romances lacking such a tour de force I could not care.

♡Exciting plot! There is a conspiracy that keeps you guessing! And it is not resolved in a predictable nor convenient way.
description

The Brass Tacks:
So funny, so clever, great plot and mystery and no one unduly villainized. Awesome protagonist. There was nothing wanting. It even portrayed dyslexics in a time where it sucked big time, even more than on a good day, to be that. As a dyslexic that spent countless hours in speech therapy, Wilson's Fundations, etc programs, it was dope and also sad to see what life could have been like in a time without the resources and understanding. This is an all time favorite HR.

This was such a fun read! I was thoroughly entertained by Honora and Graham, and the charade that led them both to discover what they truly want. Honora's cringe-worthy behavior thankfully didn't last the entire book, and even she had difficulty with her attempts at the outrageous. I think her goodness was able to shine through subconsciously, which made Graham's discernment of her true character come naturally. Their plot to work together to upend the expectations of both their fathers gave them time to grow closer together and their chemistry was great! Some unexpected twists along with a bit of a mystery made this book one that I couldn't put down. Loved the array of personalities and family dynamics woven into this sweet romance.

This book was such a delight. Honestly, from beginning to end I was invested and interested. I didn't want to put it down and I read through it quickly.

I adored the characters. Graham was, well, Graham. I loved his teasing, playful side with Honora. I loved how he didn't really hide his feelings. They came out in his words and his actions. And if you don't laugh from Honora's antics, I don't know what to say. (I'm thinking peacock here.) She is a smart one, Honora, and super dedicated to her plan. She was fun.

From the scenes to the character interactions, this book played out like a lovely movie in my head. I love when that happens. I honestly wish this was a movie. I would probably watch it over and over again. 😍

If you love Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer then you will love love love this novel. It has a 'fiery' main character named Honora who you can't help but adore. I also enjoyed having some Indian references to culture and cuisine in the book. It is a book that makes you laugh out loud at times and has you caring what happens to Honora and Graham. I also enjoyed seeing more of the ins and outs of how an estate would be managed, not too much so it was distracting from the story but enough that it gave you a glimpse of a part of the regency era that is often left out of stories.

This is an author you will look forward to reading more from.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Jess Heileman’s past books so I was very excited for her newest story, but this one was even more spectacular than I anticipated! Not only is it one of my new favorites of hers, but one of my new favorite Regency romances in general.

There was so much about this fantastic story that I enjoyed: the plot was so much fun and I was engaged from the first page, thoroughly invested in Honora’s plan to thwart her father’s wishes. It was such a fun charade, especially with all its twists and turns that had me frantically turning pages. The story was truly a delight from start to finish.

I also adored the characters. Honora was a wonderful character, with her fierce determination, wit, precocious personality, and hilarious antics. I absolutely adored Graham—such a good, honorable (and swoony!) man, with such a delightfully sweet and playful side. Their relationship was perfection and I adored each of their interactions together.

I also loved the immersive descriptions, especially those of India, a setting not as common in Regency romance. From the lovely writing style, the wonderful characters, the beautiful romance, the characters’ fantastic growth, the mysteries, and the engaging plot, The Nabob’s Daughter was truly a fantastic read and one I know I’ll be revisiting many times in the years to come.

What a fantastic read!! If you enjoy regency romance even the tiniest bit, you need to pick this book up! You will love it for the clever wit, the swoony romance, the laugh out loud humor, the mystery full of plot twists, the fantastic characters...need I go on? This book seriously has it all!!

Honora is forced to leave the only home she has ever known in India for an arranged marriage in England. Not one to go down without a fight, she hatches a plot to get out of the arrangement and oh, my word, I cringed and laughed til I cried as she put her plan into motion. She does not, however, count on swoon worthy hero Graham who makes her rethink whether she wants her plan to succeed. Their banter and and flirting was on point and I loved every bit!

There is just so much to love packed into this book. I stayed up waay past bedtime but there was no way I could sleep without knowing how it ended. This is one of my favorite reads so far this year and has earned a special spot on my favorites shelf. Do not miss this 5 star hilariously fun and flirty read!

I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.

I am always happy when I discover a new historical author and Jess Heileman makes her debut with a stunningly eye catching cover and a plot that is memorably unique. The characters have a great repartee and there is a bit of a mystery to solve as Honora and Graham try to discover how the Grandview fortune was lost. Graham was my absolute favorite character in this book! He was humorous and flirtatious, despite Honora’s efforts to hold him at arms length. Honora was a bit of a challenge for me to like. Her scheme to be so distasteful that Graham’s father would break their engagement was creative, however it was continually putting her in situations that caused her to act outlandish, selfish, or rude and it made it a bit hard to form a connection despite the fact that it was an act. Graham and Honora had entertaining banter which made their moments together on the page really sparkle. I would have loved a bit more reciprocation from Honora in the romance department. Graham was well and truly falling for her and her walls remained intact for almost the entirety of the book, and I just wanted to see her let go a bit. However, this book has several twists as the answers to the missing fortune are unearthed and ends with a happily ever after which is what I am here for! I will definitely be reading this author again as I enjoyed the writing style and humor that was sprinkled throughout this story.

What I liked:
The fun banter between Honora and Graham. There were several exchanges that made me laugh out loud.
The scene where Graham sees through Honora's act was brilliant.
The ridiculous things Honora would say under her persona...some of them...this was a positive and a negative for me.
Judith and Alice were fantastic supporting characters.
The writing style and the dialogue were enjoyable to read.

What I didn't like:
The main problem I have with this story, unfortunately, is the premise. Honora's plan to get out of the marriage contract is to make herself truly detestable to everyone around her...and she does a good job of it. To the point where I didn't even like her for the most part. The clapping at servants and disrespecting her would-be father-in-law really irked me. She justifies all of this by the fact that she was brought into this arranged marriage (a common practice at the time) against her will and therefore it's their fault, not hers, that she must be horrible. Even Graham justified it as she was insulting his family members.

I would have liked it better if A: We had had a good solid chunk of time to get to know her character before she started acting her persona, and B: if she had tried to break the contract without being a complete jerk.

The middle part seemed to drag, and then the ending seemed contrived. The father, who up until the very end of the book had been portrayed as a greedy social climber who didn't care about his daughter's feelings, suddenly switches to tricking his daughter into acting for her own happiness...by lying to her. And the twist with the advisor seemed out of the blue too.

The writing was good, but the plot could have used some polishing. Overall, a solid three stars.

Updated review (December 2021):
I had the opportunity to listen to the audiobook, and it did not disappoint. There are several female and male characters and the narrator was fantastic!! Especially with Honora's fake voice. It was fun getting to listen to this story that I loved reading just a few months ago. I highly recommend this audiobook.

Original review (June 2021):
I've loved the previous two books by Jess Heileman and this one did not disappoint. Honora Crauford does not want to leave India and journey to England to be married to Graham Whitworth, even if he is a Viscount and will be an Earl one day. So on her journey from India to England, Honora hatches a plan to get Lord Denhurst (Graham's father) to cancel the marriage contract. If he cancels it she will be able to return home to India, the only home she's ever known. If it was the daughter of a destestable nabob that Lord Denhurst required, I would give him nothing less than the most eccentric one imaginable. And that is the beginning a hilarious plot that doesn't quite work out the way Honora planned, because she wasn't counting on Graham being so handsome, flirty and utterly charming.

I loved this book!! I marked so many passages and laughed out loud at Honora's antics (how could you not?) quite often while reading. Thanks to Honora I'll never be able to see the peacocks roaming at the zoo in quite the same way. LOL. If you like arranged marriage and enemies to love stories this one fits both! Honora and Graham aren't married but she's living in their home and they interact with each other quite a bit, plus there's the instant dislike of each other because of the marriage arrangement that neither of them wants.

Honora and Graham are both wonderful characters. She's strong, fiesty and smart, while he's everything we love in our male leads--handsome, flirty, charming and kind. I enjoyed all the descriptions of India and how Honora wanted to bring some of that to her dinner party. I liked how kind she was to the Indian people who were helping her with the food and things for her party. I really enjoyed the financial mystery that ran through the second half of the book. I wasn't expecting it, but I'm always up for a little mystery. This is definitely one of my favorite reads of 2021.

I found a new favorite book! I wish I could give this book 10 stars!

Literally, everything about this novel was perfect! From the characters to the plot to the romance, AGH *chefs kiss*. I've never been sadder to see a story come to a close🥲.

Setting:
This story is set in 1800s India and England. I have never read a historical fiction (much less regency) novel partially set in India, so it was so refreshing to have a new setting in the mix. Jess does a fantastic job describing Honora's home in India and transports the readers into both settings effortlessly.

Characters:
Now, typically in a novel, there are always one or two main characters that I cannot help but dislike, however, this book is a wonderful exception! I liked each character in their own way.
Honora (Nora) was the most likable main character! I loved her so so much! This was the first time in a long time that the main character made me laugh so hard at their antics. She was so hilarious and witty and just overall charming.
I absolutely loved Graham as well, he is the epitome of a charming love interest. Though he was a relentless flirt, since his flirtation was solely centered on Nora, I shall forgive him.
Main side characters like Judith and Alicia (among many others) also won my love. Just overall astounding character building and development all the way around.

Plot:
The plot was absolutely riveting! I shall not disclose much of it because I don't want to give anything away but the mysterious disappearance of the fortune of Graham's family was marvelously done!

Romance:
Here we get to my favorite part. The romance was so sweet and cute. Nora and Graham were the perfect couple and complimented each other wonderfully.

Overall this story was wonderful, I wish this author has more books published because I absolutely love her writing style and storylines. I cannot wait to read Abigial real soon!

This is my first book by Jess Heileman & I could not have been more wow’d! This book is the full package. Enjoyable Characters? Check! Amazing settings with culturally rich historical elements? Checkity check! Intrigue? Double Check! Flirtatious banter? Triple checkity Check with an impressive amount of exclamation marks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let’s talk characters for a minute. Every single character felt real & came with a full personality instantly; all while still allowing for full character arcs as the story progressed. It was magical! I definitely wouldn’t mind a few spin-offs (hint hint).

I’ve read several books involving India & loved that this story brought India into England..all the beauty & all the drama😉

By now you all know I’m always here for a side of intrigue with any romance that I read; & Jess brought the perfect side plot! I loved trying to figure out “who done it” & I was admittedly back & forth, & all over the place with my guesses. I love it when that happens! 😊

I saved flirtatious banter for last because it was TOP NOTCH! Honora and Graham were my favorite personality types for main characters. I loved Honora’s headstrong personality & Graham’s serious flirting skills that he used to rattle her! Absolute perfection🙌🏼 Their banter was Teaser Tuesday heaven. (Prepare yourselves, because the Teaser Tuesday crush is coming your way!!)

Don’t just add this book to your TBR. Add to cart, click “buy now”, & clear your schedule for June 30th! (Paperback available now🤩) This book will be making an appearance on my top reads of 2021. If you enjoyed Otherwise Engaged by Joanna Barker, Georgana’s Secret by Arlem Hawks or A Proper Scoundrel by Esther Hatch I have a feeling you will love this one just as much!

Thanks to the author for an advanced copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Oh wow! Talk about a total winner of a novel, Author Jess Heileman dropped the mic epically with this total delight of a Regency romance story! Her characters' flirtatious banter was so witty and engaging, I'm still smiling from reading this story. Seriously, swoony flirting at its finest right here! This book is also a total sleep stealer too, I could not put it down! There were so many fun surprises that kept the plot moving forward and the pacing never lulled for me.
Honora was such a spunky and determined character. I loved the way her eye color played a symbolic part in the plot. I cringed laughing at her antics. So much laughter though. She is one of those characters you want to be friends with in real life.
Graham takes the cake for being a master at flirting. Man was he SWOONY! I loved his character sooooo much! I can't use enough exclamation points here to express how great of a character he was. He also was just so genuinely good. For real, what a catch. 😊
The two of them had a great chemistry and I loved the way their relationship developed as the story revealed itself. The supporting cast was also great.
Overall, this was one of the most fun Regency romances I've read this year and Jess Heileman is definitely solidified as a favorite author.
I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

What is the last book that made you smile? Or laugh out loud? Let me tell you about this gem!

The Nabob's Daughter
By: @authorjessheileman

Honora Crauford has been forced into an arranged marriage with a son of an Earl who apparently is in desperate need of her vastly large dowry. Unfortunately for Honora, this means she has to leave her beloved home in India. Traveling ahead of her father, Honora arrives at the dreaded estate, determined to do anything to avoid matrimony. So she creates a nasty facade to make her unlikable. Surprisingly, her handsome betrothed catches on right away and decides to help her. But as the two become friends conspiring together, affection grows and Honora discovers her heart may truly not be in India.

This as a long book but so worth every chapter! So many great scenes full of banter, swooniness, chemistry, and laughter! Why oh why Honora must you not see the perfection that is Graham right in front of you!?! But that's what you get with a head-stong woman like Honora! Graham is the perfect hero. Well developed plot, well-rounded story. I was laughing and smiling often!! Peacocks, soccer, that messy sand, freckles, oh My Lord I think you are missing your cravat! *blush* 🤣

I would have liked a little bit more to the kissing scenes, but otherwise great read! First read by this author and it didn't disappoint! Loved it!

The hype in the regency community about this book is real, and I’m so glad it lived up to what I was hoping for.

Honora is the definition of the head-strong woman who stubbornness occasionally gets in her own way. I liked her character arc and her ability to recognize and acknowledge her faults and when she needed to apologize. Honora stood for her choices too and was a character I wanted to see get her HEA.

Graham was adorable. I loved how tender he was and how open to Honora he spoke. With a slight misstep in their first meeting to a friendship that became more, I was enraptured. He was incredibly sweet and all of Graham’s quiet moments with Honora had me swooning.

The plot was more fresh than most regencies and felt like a new rush of air as I read. My only lower point was that it felt a bit long too me. It might have been so much of the accounting commentary and scenes that took away from the main focus of the romance.

This was a wonderful read though and I look forward to Heileman’s future books. Based off of this one I think there’s more swoony romances ahead.

Overall audience notes:
- Regency romance
- Language: none
- Romance: kisses
- Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of a mother

Sadly, I found this to be just okay.

It started out so funny! I was laughing out loud at the beginning when she pretends the groom is coming on to her! Lol

But as time wore on, I realized that the hero, Graham, and his sister are cheerfully assisting the heroine, Honora, in her plans to destroy their social standing and ruin their family. And they don’t recognize how flimsy and selfish Honora’s reasonings are: she likes living in India better than England, so she will get out of this arrangement at all costs despite the fact that she enjoys Graham’s company and could even love him. It’s so absurd. The premise was sound at the beginning but now that she is friends with Graham, the premise doesn’t hold up anymore. Why is he okay with her plans????

I gradually became more and more annoyed by Honora’s unnecessary charade that is hurting/will hurt Graham and his family, and the fact that when people treat her poorly BECAUSE OF HER OWN FAKE BAD MANNERS, she acts like a victim. (And Graham treats her like a victim!)

Other disappointments-

- Dual point of view with a puppy-dog, lovesick man. I should start to always include in my reviews if it’s dual POV. It’s an almost guaranteed chemistry killer.

- Out of place scenes like Honora playing soccer with village kids and Honora splashing and squealing in the ocean (with just a maid as an escort- no kids or reason to be giggling)

- Julia (not sure of her name- the nice sister) saying, “that sound so hard for you” when she found out Honora has been play-acting like a total weirdo (resulting in negative social consequences for Julia’s fam). It makes more sense that Julia would be offended at being played the fool.

- Honora saying, “Being alone with Graham was doing nothing for my resolve.” Who cares about your resolve? Why would she hold on to her resolve as if it were a thing in and of itself? If her feelings change then so does her resolve because they are tied together. They are not distinct entities. She is not being blackmailed; she has no reason to not allow herself to change her desires. I don’t get it at all.

I am very disappointed because I LOVE THAT COVER!! It sucked me in. It’s PERFECT and fabulous and I’m sure I stuck with this book longer than I wanted to because the cover makes me think this has GOT to be amazing!

Sadly, I’m quitting at chapter 31. I tried to finish it since I paid $22 bucks for the audiobook, but I just can’t. I’m not into it at all. I basically know what’s going to happen and since there’s no chemistry and all I’m feeling is irritation and disappointment…

First of all, thank you so much to Jess Heileman for sending me an ARC of The Nabob’s Daughter. I really appreciate it and I am so sorry that I’m writing this review on the release date. Life got busy. Again. *deep sigh*

Anyway, I really enjoyed the first half of the book and was super invested in the storyline until I noticed Honora pushing Graham away a little too much for their love to truly develop. He was constantly pursuing her and reminding her of his feelings, but she remained cold toward him for about 80% of the book pretty much. I just wish Honora would’ve returned his feelings more and put aside some of her doubts instead of leaving him in the dust. She was just too hot and cold with him and it made their love story kinda hard to believe. That being said, I still like them as a couple and ship them. It just would’ve been more enjoyable to read about their relationship if Honora reciprocated Graham’s love more.

Graham is a dear and I loved his character. His constant flirtatious banter with Honora was awesome, and I was always rooting for them to get together. I struggled with liking Honora though because she got on my nerves a little. I get that she desperately wanted to go home to India, but the amount of pain she caused to the people around her while trying to reach her goal was really sad. Oh and the fathers in this book kinda sucked, not gonna lie. They were a bit redeemed at the end but their motivations and selfish intentions just made them pretty unlikable to me. The servants were all really nice tho. The story dragged at parts but like I said, the first half was really good.

Honora is forced to leave her home in India and go to England to marry a stranger. She's furious that her father would use her to buy his way into the aristocracy, and she really misses India - the only home she's ever known. So she concocts a plan to be released from the engagement. But as with any plan, there are parts of the plan that you can never truly plan for. And the biggest surprise she encounters is Graham Whitworth - the man she is being forced to marry. He is more than she could have ever hoped for, but that only makes her more determined to stick to her original plan. Going through with a marriage to him would only lead to pain for them both - because of her lowly station, she knows they would always be ostracized.

There were twists and turns in this story that I didn't see coming - which was a fun surprise! I liked the secondary characters, and I hope there are more stories with these characters.

(By the way, a nabob is a person who returned from India to Europe with a fortune)

This was an absolutely wonderful story that I just couldn’t get enough of! I haven’t read much in the Regency era for a while (I needed a break) and yet I loved this sweet and fun story.

I adored the two main characters, Honora and Graham. Reading from each of their perspectives game me a great insight into their thoughts, and definitely added to the swoony moments. Honora is a likeable protagonist. She is forced into an unwanted betrothal far from her home in India and everything she loves, and uses her quick wit and sharp intellect to concoct a plan to get her back home. Enter Graham, and while he originally needs Honora’s dowry, he’s just as adverse to the match as she is.

I loved loved their interactions and his flirting with her. Watching her carry out her plan (the peacock scene about killed me, lol) was hilarious and had me giggling long into the night. This was a fantastic read that you’ll definitely want to clear your schedule for- so many toe-curling moments!

There are not many Regency romance books that make you laugh out loud. This one by Jess Heileman does just that. And it does it in the most fantastic way. I can not tell you just how much I loved everything about this book. You’ll just have to go grab your own copy and read it for yourself.

Honora was the main reason for my laughter in this book. She is the daughter of an English business man living in India. He decides she will marry in England and sends her to the Whitworth’s home to marry their son to fix the family’s finances. This is when she concocts a plan. And she wastes no time putting her plan into action. I laughed so hard at Honora’s antics. Yet, her antics didn’t make her happy. And I loved the way she redeems herself in the end.

I also loved Graham. It was great that the reader gets to see the story through both of their eyes. I loved his unselfishness. Knowing that even though he loves her, he can’t force Honora to stay.

This book is one of my very favorites I’ve read this year. I’m hoping for more books by this author soon!

I was sent an e-copy of The Nabob’s Daughter as a gift from the author. All opinions are my own.

I feel tricked! I do not understand the very high ratings for this book. I found myself so disappointed and it was painful to finish. One of my huge disappointments was that there was virtually no suspense. There was no romantic tension between Honora and Graham. Also, I have never read a book where each chapter switches so starkley between Honora and Graham’s thoughts as this book did. There was nothing left to the imagination and there was no chemistry between characters. The author spoke how the character was feeling rather than SHOW me how they were feeling. Every feeling was described, not acted out. In addition, Honora’s ruse, and the constant shrill voice she used to try to fool everyone grew tedious in the extreme. Each chapter switching between Honora and Graham’s point of view constantly took me out of the story, left nothing to the imagination and became boring in the extreme. I paid a lot of money for the book and audible version also, so I was determined to get through the story and that I did. I will not ever read or listen to this story again, and will avoid this author in the future.

I had to skim the last quarter or so of the book. That’s not a good sign.

I can’t stand when a “charade” goes on and on and gets very uncomfortable. It made Honora less likeable because she was treating people like crap and only thinking of herself. I’d have much preferred if she just ran away from the forced marriage and risk being disinherited.

There were just too many times when reality was suspended. Honora was made out to be this goddess-like creature that was smarter than everyone else around her and could do no wrong. The whole portion about her commandeering control of the estate because she was so business savvy, and of course Lord Dennison was too desperate to kick back….so laughable and silly. And of course Graham was so sheltered that he didn’t even understand how a ledger works so he needs Honora to explain it to him… yeah, sure. Way to emasculate the main man.

It’s also annoying when characters keep their true feelings hidden for stupid reasons. It took way too long for both characters to finally decide to be honest with each other.

Not my cup of tea.

ladies !!! it is not enough to be extremely beautiful well-mannered well-read god-fearing virgin to make a handsome titled man fall in love with you: you now must also know how to successfully demonstrate peacock calls in front of an audience
