Logan's Legends #1

To Capture a Rogue

Rate this book
A grieving widow comes face-to-face with her all-too-alive husband in this enchanting Regency novella.

Her husband lost in the war, Nicolina Callison spent a year grieving for the love of her life. Grief that gripped her until the day her husband walked in front of her on a London street.

Alive. Healthy. Strong. And walking into a gambling hall, of all things. In that moment, Nicolina’s grief turned into blinding rage.

Captain Gareth Callison had thought he had hid himself well enough from life—well enough from his wife. But he had miscalculated, and now he had a dagger aimed directly at his head. A dagger tip he knew he had rightly earned by abandoning his wife.

One abandoned wife. One rogue soldier. And the twist of fate that can bring them back together, if they dare to allow it.

Join the adventure today! To Capture a Rogue is the enchanting first novella of the Logan’s Legends collection, a new series of short historical regency-era romances by USA Today bestselling author, K.J. Jackson.

Note: The novellas in the Logan’s Legends series by K.J. Jackson are each stand-alone stories and can be read individually in any order. These historical romances are set in the Regency and Victorian eras, and do not shy away from scenes with steamy heat, occasional naughty language, and moments that might possibly make you squirm.

Nicolina and Gareth

What do you do when you've mourned the tragic death of your husband for two full years only to discover him blithely strolling up a London street one day alive and well? Of course you fly into a rage and fling a dagger at his lying arse!

Well, at least that's what Nic did. This first novella in the new series, LOGAN'S LEGENDS, follows Gareth Callison, one of the guards at Revelry's Tempest as he reunites with the wife he couldn't return to after the war, but would never forget.

Nic Callison has carved out a life for herself after her husband's tragic departure from her life. She is a strong and resilient woman, just the type of heroine that I enjoy reading about. I devoured this story in one sitting this evening.

I am so excited to see where K.J. Jackson takes us with this series. I have thoroughly enjoyed each one of her historical novels and eagerly await each new release.

Almost perfect

I loved the heroine. She was brave and true and honest and wickedly good with a knife. Lol. The hero was less so. He went away to war three years before and never came home to her. But he did come home. Just not to her. He was a freaking idiot. For the last year the heroine had mourned for him thinking He was dead. But he wasn't. He was back but decided he wasn't good enough for her. She saw him one day entering a townhouse and went back that night to find him and when She did he was whistling. I would have thrown the knife at him too. She had to become a governess to support herself because her brother was a gambler and lost everything. If the hero had truly loved her, even if he thought he wasn't good enough for her, would have just gone by the foundry or house to just verify She was okay, he would have seen she wasn't there. But no he decided to leave her. I hated him and it was hard for me to really trust him. And what has he been doing for the year??? Was he faithful? It never says. Was he happy? He was whistling when she found him. I just hated that whole scenario. I gave It four stars based solely on the heroine. She was incredible regardless. I did like the story once he decided he wanted her back but I just can't understand how he could abandon someone he loved. I will read this author again and I want to read about Logan someday. This was not a full novel. It was more of a short story but It is worth reading. I just wish he hadn't been whistling. Jerk.

With the mention of Rogue in the title, I had been expecting for the man in this book to have taken to womanizing after straying from the heroine of the book. But both characters are true to each other. I love the idea going through this book of a soldier returning from the war trying to return to the love he left behind. I loved that it touched on how his time in the war had changed him, left more than enough guilt on his shoulders, and didn’t leave him unscathed. And I loved Nic’s reaction when he told her everything that was weighing on him and how he had changed. I would love to see more Logan’s Legends books (maybe one starring Greyson). I’m also itching to see a book redeeming Nic’s brother, since that sounds like it would be an interesting challenge. I loved that Nicolina was a strong woman. (I know we have so many of them in indie regency books these days and they all feel too modern for a regency, but I still like it). I loved that she was interested in fencing, and talking out her problems with the point of a sword. And I loved that this book had a lot of twists and turns in it with several different characters acting behind the scenes to either help or hinder, rather than just one obvious villain. The one scene I felt didn’t really work was the scene at the card table. I kept wondering why the police weren’t summoned. And though I loved the idea of Logan’s Legends, the book didn’t sell me on picking up the basic Revelry Tempest books. I’m just not that interested in a gaming hall, despite it being owned by a woman.

To Capture A Rogue is a fantastic novella that is the start of a new series called Logan’s Heroes. It is a spin off from K J Jackson’s current Revelry’s Tempest series but it can be read as a stand alone as it only features one (very intriguing) character from that series.
Nicolina has been mourning her husband for the past year. Forced to take up employment as a governess to support herself she is amazed when she suddenly sees her husband alive and well, apparently living a new life without her. She is hurt and furious and wants answers.
She confronts Jared (in an action packed opening scene) which sets the tone for this fast paced and emotional read.
Jared has had his own reasons for staying away and these are revealed throughout the progression of the story. He is battle weary and full of guilt and it is wonderful to see him slowly accept that he has to start living again.
However there are other complications that the two also have to work through to reach their HEA.
With this being a K J Jackson story Nicolina is not your average demure heroine. She is a strong lady who knows how to look after herself. I loved her character from the moment she burst in on the scene. Jared is also a great hero. Strong and honourable.
With it being a novella there is an awful lot packed into a short amount but I didn’t feel cheated or that the story was rushed too much.
I loved this first instalment and am looking forward to the rest of the series (especially finding out more about Logan)
I was generously given an ARC by the author but the opinions expressed the my own.
I would heartily recommend this to all.

In this most unusual Regency romance, the grieving widow has skills that would be the envy of any woman scorned! From the opening sentence of the first chapter, the reader is taken by surprise and as more secrets are revealed the surprises just keep on coming. There is no accounting for the damage done by war to the men fighting them, and Jared deals with his wounded body and mind in a way that begs explanation, but one can understand that the longer he put off dealing with the reality of life, the worse the situation would be. Nicolina on the other hand, has every right to her fury when she discovers that her deceased husband is alive and well and walking the streets of London. I love the introduction of Logan's character and am looking forward to reading more about him. There appears to be some confusion as the blurb on the book speaks of Captain Gareth Callison, however the advance reader copy that I received gives his name as Jared. Nevertheless, he is an interesting hero who redeems himself and there is hope for the restoration of his marriage to the feisty Nicolina. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my voluntary and honest review.

Logan’s Legends.
I knew from the time that we first had a glimpse of him in the Ravelry’s Tempest that he and his men have their own story to tell. One of those men is Captain Jared Callison. Nicolina Collison has grieved her husband fiercely for a year, imagine her surprise and utter shock when he is seen walking and whistling of all things whistling into a gambling hall...well a woman just sees red and just wants to hurt said husband.
Jared never wanted to hurt his wife he just didn’t deserve her she was too good for him, the things he’d done have changed him, war has changed him. Nicolina is a strong woman who has suffered and grown stronger because of it. She wants her husband back and she’ll do everything in her power to get him back maybe even cause him harm.
I totally enjoyed reading this exquisite little gem, sets the ball rolling for the rest of the men and of course Logan. K.J. Jackson has a talent of keeping you engrossed in her characters lives well after you are finished. Can’t wait for the next story!
I was gifted a copy by the author for my unbiased opinion.

What can I say about this novella? Amazing! First word that comes to mind. Truly I have loved everything that has been written by this author and this was no exception. Nicolina Callison was heartsick. Her husband Gareth, had died in the war over a year ago, but she would never stop grieving, such was her intense love. Imagine though, one day she sees him in the flesh walking into a gambling hall seeming all in one piece? Rage overtook her, which was really hurt and disbelief that he was alive and had basically abandoned her and their marriage. There were such intense emotions in this story that you could feel the grief and love that they both had for each other. They were fated to come back together, but it was a journey with a lot of suspense and unanswered questions finally coming to light. This kept me on the edge of my seat and engaged me in their story. I am really looking forward to the stories of the other secondary characters, especially Logan. A must read!!

This is not your standard Regency fare. A rather unusual story. I found it suspenseful and never guessed what would happen next. At the center is young widow Nicola, who suddenly discovers she's not a widow. She's a very strong willed woman who refuses to be taken for a fool. She's emotionally stronger than all the male characters. A short story nicely tied up at the end.

Well, well, well. I was hoping this was going to be Logan’s story. Was I disappointed? At first. But boy, oh boy did I enjoy reading this. I didn’t want to put it down. It was gripping, as usual. I really like the direction she has taken within this standalone series, because this is now a branch off the original stories, but featuring the guards from the infamous Revelry’s Tempest.

I truly loved the introduction because what a reaction. Can’t blame the woman at all. Nic believed her husband to be dead since he didn’t not return from the war, and his monthly payments stopped. But she spots him wandering in Town, whistling. No wonder she threw a knife at him. She had re-built her life after his believed death and brought herself back from what I imagine to be a painful and difficult time. She’s a strong and resilient heroine and I actually fell a little bit in love with her. Especially since she’s so skilled with a knife. Major plus to Jackson for writing this character, I think Nic may be my favourite heroine from this series.

Gareth was a bit of an idiot. An adorable idiot who I also loved. Just not as much as Nic. I know it’s silly to wish that he just sucked it up and went to see his wife when he got from from war, but then we wouldn’t have this story the way it was, it just upsets me that Nic went through that and then discovered him whistling. She became a governess to support herself and he accuses of her of having some form of relation with the man who’s children she is teaching. She should’ve thrown more knives to be honest. But I love jealous/possessive partners, to an extent of course, so it kind of made me happy. However, it made me think at first how was he going on with life knowing his wife was out there somewhere, obviously he himself did not know that she thought him dead, but how could he not want to be with her? Mind baffling. It’s later somewhat explained, although, I do feel it wasn’t good enough a reason to put her through that.

I am upset that it wasn’t longer, I feel as if we could’ve explored a lot more in-depth had it been a novel and not a novella. Feel somewhat cheated over that aspect. Just want more Nic, honestly.

Nicolina and Jared were separated first by war. He went to protect her brother who insisted on fighting against Napoleon. Then they were separated by guilt. Jared couldn’t face her because of what he has seen and done (or not done) on the battlefield. They remained separated by fear. He feared she couldn’t forgive him so he let her believe he was dead.

Nicolina managed to survive and found a way to support herself. She is stronger than she gives herself credit for and far stronger than the males in her life. I love that she is more than proficient with a blade, has taken care of herself when others have failed her and is no “woe is me” miss. She truly is a heroine worth getting to know!

“She had spent the last year in widow’s weeds. Spent the last year in the darkest grief. And he was alive.

The bastard.”

I had to share that from this story because it such a realistic reaction. It shows you the metal that Nic is made of.

This is a fast paced novella, it turns and twists quickly. While the plot accelerates you get to know Jared & Nicolina and what they are made of, the lengths they are willing to go to so they can come back together.

As always, Ms. Jackson takes us on an emotional ride in this story. It is one filled with despair and guilt, anger and shame. It also has frustration and hope, and quite possibly love and forgiveness.

All of this and tiny insights into the mysterious Logan. I can’t wait to learn more about him in future books from this spin-off series. I also hope Logan’s story is a full length novel... (Please Ms. Jackson, please!)

This is a fantastic novella! The 86 pages flew by far too quickly but I enjoyed Nicolina and Jared’s story immensely.

I was given an advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

Almost perfect. 4 1/2 Stars!

Nicolina Callison has grieved for more than a year the loss of her husband in the Napoleonic wars. She was deeply in love with Gareth and wanted to give up. Being a strong-willed woman, though still grieving for her husband, Nicolina survived her loss and made a move with her wastrel brother to London where she eventually found employment as a governess. It was a great surprise to her one day when she recognized a man entering a gaming establishment. It was her husband Gareth. He was alive, appeared well, and obvious to Nicolina, had deserted her. She was encompassed by total rage.

KJ Jackson has managed to once again, create an emotionally gripping tale of two souls, who obviously love one another, but need to put aside the fears each one of them has, and share unanswered questions with one another. There is plenty of suspense, dastardly villains, and secondary characters who appeared in previous Revelry's Tempest books and will most likely be in succeeding novellas.

To Capture a Rogue, Logan's Legends is the first novella in a spinoff to the Revelry's Tempest series. It is a lovely romance, a quick read and a most satisfying beginning work to a new series by Ms. Jackson. Highly recommend.

Reasons I enjoyed this book:
Action-packed. Entertaining. Realistic. Wonderful characters. Page-turner. Unpredictable. Romantic.

K.J. Jackson

4 (enjoy Maureen Driscoll, Elisa Braden, Sophie Jordon, Samantha Holt)

I love series around family members or a group of friends. I love the series even more when the author intertwines those characters throughout the book series (it’s a pet peeve when authors don’t do that because what’s the point of the series and introducing the characters if they are not going to interact throughout the series).

The development and interest in main characters and secondary characters was enjoyable. I really did like the H/H for this book; very well paired as a couple. I loved the writing around the women empowerment (it wasn’t over the top for me).

writing style is easy to follow, humorous moments, the give and take dialogue enjoyable.

romantic/sexual content is written well throughout the book (kissing, oral, love making). I’d rate it 3/5 hotness and steam.

would absolutely recommend the book and the series. I still enjoyed the book for a one time read and the series.

Nicolina is my kind of heroine! She has mourned her husband , Jared for a year, she mourned to the point of being ill! She had to move on, her brother wasted their inheritance, she goes to work, as a Governess. One day, walking her charges home from the park, she sees a man, and stares, and stares, could it be? Later that night she sneaks out of the house she works in, this is a spoiler, she throws a knife at her husband's head! I would have done the same thing! He has been alive, and not returned home, from quilt! This is a novella, and yes, I wished it had been longer. However, we meet Logan, and his band of heroes, who need help returning from War! Absolutely love both main characters, and cannot wait for Logan's story!
I highly recommend! Thanks! Enjoy!

My first book from this author. I liked this novella as a whole, but in truth I felt like I landed in the middle of a larger story that I had no idea about. It left me floudering a little.

The writing style also included many, many, short and one word sentences. It gave a breathless, fast feel - which I assume was intended as there was lots of action and knife play. (Don't get me wrong, this was very well written) However, I didn't feel really connected to the H/h as a consequence. I think, for me, the plot and story moved along way too quickly to absorb everything properly.

I know this is a series spin off and the blub did say it could be read as a stand alone, but I felt I was missing - something... I do intend to read more from this author.

I really enjoyed this read - it was full of danger, lies, action, romance, not so great family, great friends & a very intriguing story. Nicolina Callison has grieved for more than a year for her husband that was killed in the war - she had days she didn't want to even go on living with out Gareth but she pulled herself together & became a governess. What a shock it was when she saw Gareth, alive & well entering a gaming hell. Rage took over & now she knew he had just abandoned her. The excitement, adventure, danger starts here & it takes some doing to get to their HEA. I highly recommend this book - K.J. Jackson always has a way of sucking you in to the plot & I find myself emotionally immersed in the lives of the characters.

5 STARS, REGENCY ERA, WAR TIME, LOVE

Out of Logan's Legends Gareth, the Captain, is the one this book is mainly about as the main Hero. Great Blurb, read it if you haven't it gives the flavor of the story especially the emotional level straight off. K. J. Jackson, hit a pure note with this Series of Books, characters to love, to root for, definitely characters that their slimminess seems to eek off the pages they are on with the smell of them, the Legend's of Logan's that have been saved, need to be & are in the process, and the women who love them, help them & others who are just appreciative for their sacrifice in the war. Nic & Gareth are explosive in all of their feelings & passions between the two of them. Recommend.

It captured my attention ...

This is the first publication I have read by this author. I really liked that it wasn't your typical bodice-ripping affair of the ton. Instead it is a story about working class people struggling with the emotional and physical cost of the Napoleonic war. The human ravages of warfare is riddled throughout history and is still relevant today. While I know the struggles veterans face are much more involved than this story would imply, this is not a heavy and dark tale. It is the slow unveiling of the causes of the split and gradual reunification of a couple caught up in the aftermath of war.

This was an intriguing story and so interesting to read about the story of one of the guards at the gambling hall. I loved the story of Jared and Nicolina, there were a number of misunderstandings that led to their separation. Nicolina is skilled in the use of blades, thanks to her guardian uncle and this comes into play during the story. Their reunion doesn’t go smoothly and danger is lurking in the wings. A very enjoyable story with some tender moments as well as menace. I look forward to reading more of the guards’ background stories. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it.

A pound of flesh a life of memories

Without greed there would be no need for war. Sadly the ones to pay are the ones who've been lied to, were convinced it is the right thing to do. They are left giving a pound of flesh and gaining a life time of nightmarish memories. Gareth was one of those soldiers who came back with the weight of guilt so heavy he chose to stay away from his wife. Fortunately circumstances allowed for a very happy ever after! No cheating or cliffhanger. Enjoy 🤓

Enjoyable beginning to a new series. I love a story that depicts a strong courageous woman who overcomes life's obstacles and is able to put her life on the right track through sheer willpower. Many women in this time period would have fallen into destitution forced to work in a workhouse or worse.
Nic was given an oportunity and she ran with it and thankfully, a second chance awaited her. I'll definitely be getting the second book when it's released.

A timeless HEA

The horrors of war damaging not only the warriors but also those at home are underscored in this novella. Filled with grief over her husband’s death a year previous, Nicolina Callison is shocked to see him alive in London. From this Ms Jackson brings forth a story of compassion and honor and courage to the men returning from war and their families welcoming them home. Although set in early 1800s England, it is timely to today. Well done.

A true love story with twists.
How can one be dead but still alive? When Nicolina has a brother who would sell her or lose in a card game, why would he not let her believe her husband dead?
Gareth returns but cannot face Nicolina with the knowledge that he did not protect her younger brother from harm. Where can they go from here.
.
Watching the progression of love and consequences is a great read.

This was a decent read, but pretty short.
I loved Nicolina's character, she was hot-headed but not unreasonable. She was independent, kind to the kids and very practical. On the other hand, I thought Gareth changed his mind pretty drastically at some point from "not wanting to face her" to "wanting her back". The switch was pretty fast and not really very convincing and smooth, but he did care for Nicolina and that was enough for me to like the story.

The Pages Turn Themselves in This Excellent Romance

He abandoned his wife; she found him in a gaming hell, but that was the beginning of the story. Read the story of the rogue who became a legend, and find out why his wife thought him dead. Theirs is a love story that will turn the pages.

I had hoped for better

The premise for this story was solid, however, the author struggled with how her characters were going to behave. It didn't make sense that Gareth knew nothing about the foundry. Was he so thoughtless he didn't even check to see what had happened to Nicolina in the time he was gone?

Good read

This was a good read. Not nearly as adventurous as the last ones but as it was about one of Logans men and not of the main characters in the first books i suppose it could be a little less intense. Still worth a read as it explains about the war and the villains that prey on the poor.

I don't usually read Novellas, I'm skeptical that I can get absorbed (or escape) into a shorter story. I tried this one on a lark through the library.

I enjoyed the story, and I'm amazed how well KJ Jackson told such an engrossing tale, filled with action and good characters in such a short time. I look forward to more adventures with K J Jackson!

The author does not disappoint

Once again we are reminded of the cost of war. Our heroine struggled to survive the loss of her husband until she found him alive. Then she had to keep from killing him. It was a close call. But the heart will always know best.
