Penelope Phair #2

The Burnt Remains

Rate this book
There’s no smell worse than charred human flesh. When officer Penelope Phair arrives to investigate a burnt body at a circus, she fears she might lose her lunch. Lucky for her, there’s nothing but ash and bones left. The bad news? No one has any clue how they got there or who they belong to.

Phair would’ve preferred an easier case to crack. She’s feeling pressure from all sides: from her new mentor, the brilliant homicide detective Alton Dean; from her captain, who’s scheming to take Dean down; and most importantly from herself, as she tries to prove she’s worthy of Dean’s trust.

But there’s no time for self-doubt, as murder isn’t the only thing on the menu. As Phair uncovers a tangled web of abuse, blackmail, and identity theft, she’s left wondering how deep the rabbit hole goes. Fire may have licked clean THE BURNT REMAINS, but it’ll take more than that to cleanse the hearts of those involved.

2 = I had major issues with this book. (Not good...)
1 = I hated or DNF'ed this book. (Real bad!)

Very enjoyable. The characters are all coming into their own and their interaction is making for an enjoyable read.

The mystery was complex, yet the answer wasn't really out of left field. I do enjoy the fact that the "solution" is left a little up in the air.

All that said, I had one issue that pulled me out of the story and nagged me throughout. I really hoped that the solution would account for it, but I'm afraid that this was just Mr. Berg not doing enough research. Turns out diamonds burn at a lower temperature than gold melts. Their first clue should never have been found.

As the granddaughter of the Daggers and Steele mystery series, Penelope is coming into her own with the same character types that made the first series so interesting. I am looking forward to the next book in this series. You do not need to read Daggers and Steele in order to enjoy this series, but it would add some background info and I highly recommend it too.
