A Great Beginning To The End Of IDW's Epic And Ambitious Mirror Universe Saga
This is a fantastic first chapter in what is supposed to be the most ambitious Mirror Universe story in Star Trek since DC did their Mirror Universe Saga back in the '80s. I am not familiar with the artist, Carlos Nieto, but his art style works with this story. As usual Scott Tipton & David Tipton just hit another one out of the ballpark. I can't wait to read the rest of this event now.
They are like the Babe Ruth writing team for Star Trek comics. Whenever you read a Star Trek story written by them, you know that you're in for a real treat. I will not reveal spoilers for this story because, if you're a Trekkie and you enjoy reading the comics, then The Mirror War is definitely worth checking out. But I will give a warning for this story.
This is the end chapter of a Mirror Universe story that started way back in 2017 in a story called Star Trek: The Next Generation: Mirror Broken and then continued into Star Trek: The Next Generation: Through The Mirror and Star Trek: The Next Generation: Terra Incognita. There was one Mirror Universe story a year when Mirror Broken came out back in 2017. Originally, I believe that The Mirror War was supposed to come out in 2020 but it was postponed due to the pandemic. So, if you're interested in reading The Mirror War, I would advise to go back and read the previous three Mirror Universe stories for Star Trek: The Next Generation first and then segue your way into The Mirror War.
You don't have to but you'll have a better understanding of what's going on in The Mirror War if you do 🙂🖖.
I always wondered what the Mirror Universe version of the beloved crew would be like. Sometimes I don't understand the Mirror Universe, because I feel like if the characters are supposed to be dark mirror versions of their prime counterparts, Picard should be a wimp and not a leader, Geordi should be technically inept, and so on, but then again, Troi is ruthless and Barclay isn't the nervous wreck. I digress.
The art for this issue is a bit suspect. It's too simple for my taste and any panel that isn't a closeup looks like it's drawn by a child. It feels rushed and some of the characters aren't really recognizable. I liked the noir type art I saw in the earlier stories much better and feel like it fits the story better.
Overall, this issue is enough to get me going on the Mirror War but doesn't get me overly excited for it.
