Metacognition is one of the most highly effective but under-used teaching strategies in all of education. Over-complicated by some, over-simplified by others and misunderstood by many, this area of theory and practice is in need of a fresh look. The Metacognition Handbook will provide a clear, practical guide for teachers and school leaders to embed metacognition into classroom practice and school culture to enhance student outcomes. Looking at classroom pedagogy, teacher CPD, transition, and more, The Metacognition Handbook argues a case for evidence informed application of simple but effective ways to boost student independence, self-regulation, self-efficacy and motivation.

A concise and clear guide to building metacognition into teaching and learning that recognises some of the challenges and opportunities it provides. I've been doing a lot of this stuff already but didn't realise it! It has given me a clear sense of where I can develop my current teaching practices in the classroom to develop my students into independent, self regulated learners.
Has it informed my practice? Yes
Will I recommend it to other practitioners? 💯 yes!
This book has made a tangible and difficult concept far more tangible for me. As a Head of English in a school that wants to develop students’ metacognitive habits, I have struggled to understand their place in my classroom and ways in without metacognition becoming the next fad that we all pay lip service too. This book did exactly that, providing me with nuggets of research, practical ways in, case studies of teachers and what they have done, and helped me to realise that I already use metacognitive strategies. It’s just time for me to make them more explicit. I would recommend this book to any and every teacher… and I will be!
A fantastic exploration of one of the areas that the EEF say could have the most impact on our students. It’s sometimes difficult to a) find the time to read educational research and b) work out how to apply it in the classroom, but this book fills a gap for teachers. But it isn’t just about using Metacognition to improve things for our students it also looks at how teachers and leadership teams can use it to improve our CPD engagement. A fabulous book.
An excellent, research informed journey into what metacognition is, practical strategies for application, case studies and research all delivered with a healthy dose of reality. Brilliant for developing understanding of the concept or for anyone looking to embed this in their own or whole school practice.
