This was the very first book that I read that introduced me to the idea of different planes of existance. I have been hooked ever since.

From the back page:

The delightful Branderson family were a welcome addition to the London square. But a year later, they were shunned by the whole neighbourhood...

Clara saw the frightening changes in her husband too late. Justin was possessed by a malign presence so powerful, that neither payer not occult means could exorcise it...Gradually the evil gained ascendence over each member of the family. Madness and tragedy overtook those who entered thee house. One man, alone, was prepared to fight the forces of darkness.

I was hooked on this when I first started, it seemed to have everything I would have wanted from a book of this kind, the changes that took place in Justin Branderson were slow and ominous, I couldn't wait to see how things developed but unfortunately the writing became so dry that it sucked any of the enjoyment out of the book, that isn't to say it was bad, in fact the story was quite good and it spun off in a different direction to what these books usually do.

There are 3 separate narratives, the first starts with Clara Branderson writing letters to her friend detailing the slow changes overcoming her husband and her concerns and worries about him.
Then there is quite a lengthy statement which is provided in court, I can't say too much here because they would give away too many spoilers.
The same goes for the finale of the book as well which is done in the form of a confession.

All in all a highly decent read which suffers through being a little too dry.

When I read this in High school it simply terrified me, it is such an excellent horror story; it's great reading on a dark, windy and stormy night!
