Having a meltdown in the local hardware store isn’t the best way to find the man of your dreams. Or is it?

Brennan Taylor is at the end of his rope, and the busted pipe under his kitchen sink was the last straw. He knows nothing about plumbing, or any of the other things his father says a grown man should know, but lucky for him he is about to lose it in front of the perfect man to help him.

Ryder Davis didn’t go to the hardware store intending to play hero. He went after a new faucet for his bathroom. But when he saw the angel in the plumbing aisle, it was obvious Brennan needed someone to step in and fix things for him. No problem, saving a beautiful man in distress was something Ryder was happy to do.

Fixing Brennan’s plumbing turns into fixing his employment situation, and then right on to fixing his single status. But will Brennan’s determination to be the kind of man he thinks he is supposed to be keep him from being the boy a Daddy like Ryder needs?

This was okay, but definitely nothing special.
It was really missing some more feeling for the book to truly be great.

Brennan was sweet, caring, cute and overall super likable. He was definitely a character to root for, even if there wasn’t much depth or character development to him or anyone else in this book.
Ryder was also a nice enough guy, but I didn’t love him as much.

I definitely appreciated how all of Ryder’s friends seemed to realize what a great catch Brennan was, and were eager to point it out.

“You better do something to lock that boy in, Ryder. He is sweet, and he is pretty. If you think he’ll stay single long, you’ve got another thing coming.”
“He works for me, Owen. That’s all. There’s nothing to lock in.”
“Yeah, you keep telling yourself that until someone comes along and gives him the world, the way you want to. Because they will.”

When it came to the relationship I definitely feel like we could have gotten more: More interactions, more romance, more pining, more everything. It was all a little bit surface level, and there was the potential here for a better love story than what we got.
I actually feel like a big part of the problem for me was with the writing-style and pacing, since there was a lot of skipping in time and of moments that could have been sweet.
Nonetheless, when we did finally get a sweet moment or thought, it was good enough for me to feel at least a little giddy.
I mean, I loved how much Ryder seemed to adore Brennan and I really wouldn’t have minded getting a little more of that in the book.

“Gorgeous blue eyes as deep as the ocean stared up at me, and I was lost and found at the same time. This boy was mine, and I wasn’t going to let him go.”

Also, can we all just agree that the pet name angel is just uber swoon-worthy? Because I love it.

4 “I got everything I wanted and all it took was a busted pipe and meltown in the local hardware store to get it” stars

Then I pulled out my wallet and took out some cash.
“Take this, just in case you need it.”
“I have money,” he said.
“I know you do. But I want you to take this. Use it to buy whatever you need…dinner, drinks, or anything. Or hold on to it and give it back later, but I’ll feel better knowing you have it if you need it.”
“Okay.”
“Remember what I told you about trusting your instincts.” He nodded yes, and I kissed his forehead.
“You call me anytime.”
He leaned close enough so he could talk without anyone else hearing him. “Thank you, Daddy.”

This is a typical daddy kink book, we are not reinventing anything here, but god did the typical daddy kink formula work for me here. I have been struggling with daddy kink books lately and mostly with the daddies, it’s so hard for me to find one I like. I'm happy to report that I absolutely adored the daddy in this book. This book worked so well for me. I have to admit that I was a very easy sell for me though, after my horrible luck with daddy kink books lately, all I needed was a decent daddy and I was going to love the book.

Brief summary
Brennan, 24 years old, is living with a friend and they have a busted pipe in their kitchen so he goes to the home improvement store to try and fix it and he meets Ryder, 38 years old, there. They have a one night stand. Ryder needs someone to help him with the business side of his construction and remodelling business so he employs Brennan and then they fall in love.

First, The entire set up of this book was so fun to me. It was like a porn movie from the 1970s and I absolutely adored it. I love these kind of vibes in books. It’s a little ridiculous but it just works for me, so well. Also, I’m sucker for any puns and jokes that has to do with plumbing or construction and there were so many of them in this book and I absolutely loved them all.

Second, the sex scenes were nice and hot. I would have prefered a little more details during them but what we got during them was really nice. I'm just really greedy and prefer sex scenes to be longer than a few pages.

Third, I loved the progression of the daddy kink in this book. Ryder knew he is a daddy but Brennan didn’t have any experience with daddy kink. Ryder never tried to pressure Brennan into adding daddy kink to their relationship, he was ready to have a relationship without the daddy kink if thats what Brennan wanted. The book was made so they started dating and the more and more time they spent together the more they both realized that daddy kink would be perfect for their relationship and then that added it to the relationship. I was so into that progression, I loved seeing Brennan go from not wanting a daddy to trusting Ryder more and more and wanting him to be his daddy. I loved how the book was made so little realizations of how Brennan wants a daddy were sprinkled in the book, like Brennan realizing that he likes Ryder doing stuff for him and Brennan realizing that likes Ryder taking care of him. Those little details made his realization that he wants a daddy so much more believable.

Side note, I really liked how the daddy kink was shown in this book. I liked how it wasn’t one sided with the daddy doing everything for the boy and the boy just existing. Brennan did as much for Ryder as Ryder did for Brennan and it was so lovely to me. And Ryder took care of Brennan because he loved doing it, not because Brennan needed him to do it and that was so lovely to read about, I prefer boys who want a daddy but who don’t need one to boys who seem to need a daddy to function.

Fourth, the entire period that they got to know each other before they got together was so sweet. Ryder gave Brennan a job he made up for him because Brennan needed a job, Brennan would cook Ryder’s lunch all the time because he wanted to take care of Ryder and Ryder would buy Brennan small things to make him feel more comfortable at his job. And they kept reassuring each other and hyping each other up. Everything was just so sweet and I loved it so much.

Fifth, my favourite daddies in books are the ones who are gentle and sweet and always there for their boy but also a little flawed and Ryder was such a good daddy to me, he was exactly what my perfect daddy in books is. He was gentle, he was caring, he always put Brennan and his needs first, he made space for Brennan and took care of him and he had a personality and flaws that made him feel human instead of him being way too perfect that it isn’t realistic anymore. And I loved how Ryder was a protective daddy who took charge but he always wanted Brennan to live his life, he just made sure that Brennan was safe while doing so.

Sixth, for the things I wasn’t the biggest fan of. First, the book was more telling than showing and I would have loved to follow them while they were doing stuff rather than being told that they did it after it happened. Second, Brennan’s dad spends the entire book being mean to Brennan and in the last 5% of the book he apologizes and is suddently a nice guy. I didn’t enjoy how everything was wrapped in a pretty bow at the end of the book.

I really enjoyed this book and I absolutely adore how the daddy kink was shown in it, it was so sweet and the exact amount of fluff I prefer in daddy kink books.

I received an ARC of this book, and this is my honest review.

This was such a good daddy/boy book. I loved Brennan and Ryder both together and not. I especially loved how low their story was on drama and misunderstandings. Something I think this trope usually have way too much of.

The ending was a little abrupt and it felt more like the author was telling us instead of showing us at times, but I really enjoyed it

I tell you what, the daddy/boy kink aint for me yall. That shit was not for me. I was breaking out in a sweat, and not in a good way. I was cringing and I wanted to die. Now, everything else was okay. I enjoyed the relationship between them, but having people call someone Daddy in every day situations and people thinking of a younger dude they are a relationship in as "their boy". Nope that aint it for me not one bit. But if I took that shit out of it, it was a pretty cute super easy nothing to write home about age gape romance. I mean like I enjoyed the book. For real, if you take the daddy kink out of it its just a regular old book with short to the point fucking scenes and characters that are pretty good. It was a okay book. But like I dont wanna read about this kink, and yet I need to know how the straight dude Keegan gets his own book and Im gonna put myself through the torture of it. I am gonna skip the second book and just read the third just ot know. I need to fucking know. I mean girl I wish I had a daddy, for real Brennan is living that dream but you couldnt catch me calling Ryder daddy if my life depended on it. Maybe if he blew my back out, but only during. Either way, good for them but it aint for me sis.

How do I rate this? For being nearly 300 pages, the writing was such that I was able to get through it fairly quickly. It was a charming story with sweet characters but its lack of angst and subpar sex scenes made it feel slow or disappointing at times. This is one of those stories where there isn’t anything going on other than the MCs admitting to and accepting their feelings for one another. There isn’t anything wrong with those types of stories (in fact, sometimes that simplicity is exactly what I want) but I expect a certain level of emotional buildup and perhaps more pining than I got here.

Also, despite the series’ name, the Daddy kink really wasn’t explored. Since the “boy” in this relationship wasn’t someone who necessarily wanted to be a boy (though he was comfortable with it once he understood that he didn’t have to give up his autonomy), all that ended up happening was by the end of the story he finally felt comfortable accepting help from his Daddy when he needed it and calling him that when they were alone. I’d say this is somewhere between 2.5 to 2.75 stars, rounded up.

Ryder and Brennan were really sweet, cute and absolutely perfect together. The story was rather short, but it had so much personality going for it. Some of the best things about it was that the character of Brennan wasn’t portrayed as some kind of stereotype. He was a young proud gay man trying to find what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. The other main character, Ryder, was a hard-working guy that owns his own construction company and had friends that liked to bring their partners, male or female, and hang out on a Sunday afternoon.

The way he and Brennan met in the hardware store was cute as well as rather funny. I have no problem with that type of story line...I've read hundreds of M/M romances and sometimes that works well for the characters...but not every "boy" is like that and not every "Daddy" is overly dominate. I was just really nice to see that, and have Brennan clarify that having someone look after him sometimes didn’t mean he couldn’t do those things himself.

Ryder and Brennan fell for each other fast, but it made sense. They simply -"worked" with chemistry that was off the charts. Overall, a sweet, low-angst, story with even a puppy. I already have book #2 pulled up on Hoopla.

This is the perfect Sunday afternoon book. I listened to this while painting my nails and by the time the narrator announced that “This has been Ryder, Blue Collar Daddies Book One by Jacki James” the sun had gone down and I couldn’t have been more relaxed.

Ryder and Brennan were good together but I think there could have been more chemistry. The plot was easy and the supporting cast was (like the story) nice and wholesome. The ending was a little abrupt though — not because everything hadn’t been wrapped up — but it was missing something.

The spice was well written but I would’ve liked more. I’m giving it 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/5.

Audiobook review: 3.5 stars
Kirt Graves was alright in this but not particularly noteworthy.

Expect
- Age gap
- One night stand to lovers (co-workers)
- Daddy / boy relationship
- Small town

Eh. I'm trying to make a concentrated effort to actually read the ebooks books I pick up for free, rather than leaving them to languish on my kindle, but maybe this one shoulda languished. Or I should have DNFed it. It was fine, but the writing was just really kind of boring and the characters were bland. One of those books where I really don't think it contained a single original sentence, something that I couldn't read somewhere else. The setup was cute (a contractor shopping at the hardware store comes across a young guy trying to figure out how to fix his burst pipe, and ends up helping him) but there was almost zero chemistry to the romance. Okay, zero is an exaggeration. But so many things about the writing just kind irritated me, and a couple hours after finishing I'm already having trouble remembering anything about either of these men.

Not a bad book, but not for me, alas.

⭐️ 3/5 🌶️ 2/5 — Lukewarm Daddy Energy and just mid really.

This one left me with mixed feelings, not gonna lie.

We’ve got Ryder, the Daddy, and Brennan, the baby boy. The relationship between them is kind of a slow burn, which can work sometimes—but here, it just didn’t hit the mark for me. Brennan is new to the Daddy/boy dynamic, and while I appreciate Ryder’s patience, his inner thoughts and some of the things he said felt off. At times, it felt like he wasn’t all that into Brennan, or at least not fully embracing that Daddy energy I was craving. He even admits at one point he’d be okay not being in a Daddy/boy relationship if it meant keeping Brennan. Sweet? Maybe. But for a Daddy kink book? Meh. 🫤

As for the spice? Let’s just say it was undercooked. Up until around the 78% mark, the scenes were so mild they felt like they were being fast-forwarded. Not quite fade-to-black, but not steamy either. Just… meh. There was one scene that got decently hot, but the rest barely sizzled. Definitely not enough to make me squirm in my seat, and I live for that shit. 😐

The whole vibe felt soft and kinda flat. There wasn’t much spark or sexual tension between the MCs, which made their connection feel more like an old married couple than two people starting a new and exciting relationship. Where was the chemistry? The fire? The desperate need to tear each other’s clothes off? It just wasn’t there. 🫠

This book was okay. Sweet, sure. But just mid overall. I didn’t fully connect with Ryder or Brennan, and if you’re looking for that hot, kinky Daddy/boy energy with serious tension and a sizzling payoff… this one isn't gonna scratch that itch. 😬

Quotes:

You really like it when I call you Daddy?”
“Yes, Angel, I really like it.”
“Can you tell me why?”
“Because when you call me Daddy, that tells me that you know that you can count on me and depend on me to take care of you. And it means even more to me coming from you because I know how hard that is for you to depend on other people. But I like that you are capable and independent, so you don’t depend on me because you need to. Instead of needing me to take care of you, you’re choosing to let me, and that means a lot to me.”

While the premise wasn't necessarily anything overly original, I thought it was a really strong example of a sweet and loving daddy story. I loved that they fell into those roles naturally, and even though Brennan didn't have any experience as a boy, he was so open and was able to find a perfect balance between his need for independence and allowing Ryder to care for him. And Ryder absolutely adored Brennan, always lifting him up; he was so in tune with his boy and it was lovely. Their connection was sexy and sweet, and just left me feeling happy.

Best read on Kindle Unlimited
This was an okay book, it was Daddy kink but not so daddy Kink in your face kind. I recommend it for people who just want a dip into daddy kink but not full on.

Its about Brennan finding his feet on his own when he suddenly he has burst pipes and has to fix them. In comes Ryder to save the day and maybe just change up his life while he's at it.
Its an okay book that's why i gave it 3 stars, there wasn't anything to stand out in this book and it was done well enough that i didn't drop it half way. I did buy a copy but i recommend you read it first on kindle unlimited to see if its something you'll want to get.

This is a gentle, low angst Daddy/boy romance, with a fair amount of steam and some absolutely charming characters. Both Ryder and Brennan are kind, caring, and, of course, hot— it’s impossible not to like them, individually and together. Brennan in particular stole my heart: he cooks, he organizes, he's a good friend and a kind soul. He deserves all the good things, and it's impossible to deny that Ryder is good for him. For the most part, I liked the gentleness with which their relationship built, and didn’t miss the lack of angst and drama. There were times, however, when I felt like they both chose equanimity (go with the flow, worry about it later) over communication, and I wasn’t a huge fan of that. I would have liked to see Ryder and Brennan communicate more directly, and in depth, about what their relationship dynamics would look like, for example: I didn’t love that Brennan got to learn most of what the dynamics of the kink were from Travis, another boy, rather than discussing it with Ryder directly— I think seeing them communicate with each other about something so fundamental would have been more emotionally fulfilling, for both characters and readers. However, all in all, this is a really enjoyable read, and well worth checking out.

*I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Audio update
Kirt Graves did a beautiful job in making these men more real and relatable, where you honestly feel you know them as real people by the end. With each person's pov, you are able to easily tell whose talking.

Not all daddy boy relationships are the same, and I love the way Jacki shows this in each of her books. Brennan & Ryder don't just dive in they see what works for them and interrogate that into their lives. They support and build each other up so they can be their best selves. Ryder has an amazing set of fellow daddy friends who encourage him to take the step into trying out this relationship. Along the way, Brennan gets a new bestie to reach out to with any questions. I hope that his bestie finds his daddy too, cause yeah, his 'straight' best friend would settle beautifully into this lifestyle. I'm looking forward to more from this series of hard-working Daddies finding their perfect match.

This is a nice Daddy/boy story, though there's a lot that happens in the book before Ryder and Brennan become officially official. That was the only problem I had with the book - there was too much time in between their meeting and hooking up the first time and their finally coming together as a couple. They worked together, and saw each other every day. They just had a bit of a slow burn before they officially came together.

I look forward to reading the others in the series.

This is a lovely romance between a hot older "daddy" construction company owner and a sweet out-of-work college grad looking for a job using his degree. They each find what they need with the other and along the way readers are treated to a sweet love story.

Though there's some Daddy kink, it's super mild and not much more than Brennan calling Ryder Daddy. There's even a puppy thrown into the mix so the story was just what I needed to fill my need for sweetness without going candy shopping. (And I mean that in the nicest way.)

I'm definitely trying book two, where one of Ryder's "Daddy" friends (there are 4) meets the boy of his dreams.

This book was exactly what I needed! A feel-good romance, very low angst and a lovely meet-cute.

Brennan ended up in Austin after University, which really wasn’t his plan at all. Struggling to find a job that’ll put his degree to use, he’s at the end of his rope when a leaky pipe under the kitchen sink lands him in a hardware store and Ryder’s capable hands.

This is a daddy romance, and I am so excited to see where the rest of Ryder’s friends end up! (Also keen to see if Keegan ends up playing for the other team?? Sounds like he could use a daddy.)
