About the author

Laurie Verchomin was born and raised on the Canadian prairies. She studied piano, voice, modern dance and theater in Edmonton, Alberta. As a young woman she had the great fortune to meet jazz icon Bill Evans. Her memoir records her own awakening into love, sex, drugs, spiritual enlightenment, death and jazz as well as the incendiary ascension of one of the worlds most beloved musicians. The Big Love ~ Life & Death with Bill Evans ( Volume 1) Lauries first book is now in 17 countries. A French translation is in production, and The Big Love is now being considered for development as a film or stage production. She has performed selected works from the book in New York with the composer/pianist Jed Distler as a part of the Composers Collaborative, and was recently interviewed for a new documentary film about Evans. She is also in the process of creating a multi-media ebook version of The Big Love. Currently she resides on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia with her partner and devotes her time to raising her 13 year old daughter, writing, tai chi and meditation.

З плюсів - читається легко і швидко, дає певну ретроспективу життя у 70ті, плюс ще пару альбомів собі підгледів.
На цьому плюси все. Написано відверто погано з літературної точки зору, про самого Еванса теж не те щоб багато, відносини 50+ річного чоловіка і 22 річної дівчини напевно теоретично можуть бути якимось неземним коханням і все таке, але саме тут я в це взагалі не повірив, та і в цілому якась weird energy простежується в пісанині пані Верхомін. Забагато сексу, причому він тут просто якось ні до чого приплетений.
Добре що перекладається в нас література про джаз, але думаю можна було пошукати щось цікавіше. Можливо переклали, тому що тут є певний звʼязок з Україною, але таке - книгу цю не радив би. Втім, все одно сумно було читати про останні місяці життя Еванса.. так схоже на всіх музикантів, які страждали на сильну наркотичну залежність. Привід переслухати you must belive in spring.

As a massive Bill Evans fan, I had high hopes for this book. While it was not everything I hoped it to be, it was everything it promised to be. The story follows Laurie, who had a serious relationship with Bill in the last years of his life. My goal in reading this book was to learn as much about Bill as I could. I ended up learning more about the relationship between Bill and Laurie than Bill himself, but that knowledge can be used to infer about Bill.

If Bill is an idol to you, this account may bring him back to Earth. He was a deeply troubled and flawed man, and his art reflects this. I'm glad to have learned so much about this relationship, but my search for a glimpse of his inner-world continues.

I thought this was an interesting, sad book. I was curious to know a little bit about Bill Evans, the great jazz pianist, and that is what I learned; a little bit about Bill Evans. But the book turned out to be about much more- a young woman's sort of journal about her life around the time that she met Bill Evans, and some of what she experienced with him in the short amount of time that she got to be with him. Definitely a sad book, but interesting to learn a little bit about what this jazz giant was like in the end of his too-short life(he died at the age of 51), from this woman's perspective.

Проковтнула книгу за кілька годин. Відверта, глибока. 70-і, сексуальна революція, музиканти, актори, гіппі, наркотики і танець джазу та смерті. Авторка описує свій досвід буття коханки Білла Еванса, пізнаючи любов, дорослішання і дику співзалежність. Читаючи книгу, не потрібно аналізувати, раціоналізувати, пояснювати, а відпустити емоції і пірнути за відчаєм і музикою. Мене дуже торкнуло.

Після прочитання глянула тут коментарі розгніваних шанувальників Білла Еванса і відчула огдиу до знецінення, яким вони обдаровують авторку.

"Кохання. Життя і смерть з Біллі Евансом" - відгук про книжку
Перебуваючи під враженням від недавно прочитаної автобіографії Майлза Девіса, цілком (не?)випадково в одній з львівських книгарень в око впала ця книжка - на обкладинці побачив знайоме обличчя й ім'я, і не вагаючись, взяв до рук, бо літератури такого штибу (маю на увазі на джазову тему) в Україні не знайдеш. А тут ба - Старий Лев, та ще й в перекладі Віктора Морозова. Що може піти не так? Скромний наклад в 500 примірників говорить про експериментальність проєкту й затятість ініціатора Олексія Когана, адже очевидно, що на такій далекій від мейнстріму темі в Україні не заробиш.
Але для мене залишається загадкою, чому зі всього різноманіття світової джазової літератури українські панове-видавці обрали саме щоденникові записи інфантильної самозакоханої дівчинки, якій пощастило зустріти вдвічі старшого за себе дядька, який за щасливим збігом обставин виявився джазовим генієм-піаністом Біллом Евансом, що дозволило їй кілька років потусити поряд з ним в богемних колах, нанюхатися кокаїну, нічим особливо не переймаючись, і, врешті, багато років після смерті музиканта, хайпанути на його імені, видавши цю книженцію.
Навіть автобіографія такого суворого дядька, як Майлз Девіс, залишила по собі більше емоцій, ніж «одкровення» пані Верхомин. Не думаю, що в цьому є провина перекладача (Віктор Морозов, як не крути), який щиро намагався витягнути недолугі пасажі на хоча б якийсь емоційний рівень. Але йому це не дуже вдалося. Можливо тому, що це чисто дівочі (даруйте за сексизм) спогади, а книжку переклав чоловік? Щоб дізнатися напевне, треба зазирати в оригінал, але на нього мене вже не вистачить.
Власне про Білла Еванса в цій книжці дуже мало йдеться. Більше - про «мої пружні стегна», «молоде тіло», та «мої груди виглядають добре з будь-яким одягом», я те, я се… В авторки за кілометр відчувається бажання здаватися чимось більшим, ніж вона насправді була (є?). Її бездарна (не вірте тому, що написано у передмові!) егоцентрична писанина викликає бажання відкласти дане чтиво подалі, але, виключно з поваги до Еванса, доводиться терпіти її балаканину до нещасливого кінця. Це ніби, коли прийшов на зустріч з відомим музикантом, а поряд весь час крутиться його коханка, яка постійно базікає, втручається в розмову і перебиває.
Якщо в авторів перекладу був намір познайомити українських читачів з джазовими легендами, чому б не взяти біографію того ж Еванса, написаної Пітером Петтінгером, або ту ж автобіографію Майлза Девіса (за співавторства Квінсі Троупа), де Девіс згадує практично кожного відомого і не дуже джазового музиканта, з якими він працював з початку 50-х до своєї смерті –Білла Еванса, Гіла Еванса, Чарлі Паркера, Джона Колтрейна, Діззі Гіллеспі, Сонні Ролінза, Ахмета Джамала, Гербі Генкока, Телоніуса Монка і десятки, якщо не сотні інших.
Тому, як казав Лесь Подерв'янський, «ця історія не риболовна і не охотніча», Когану і Морозову налити по штрафній і послати на пошуки кращих книжок про джаз. Бо Білл Еванс та українські читачі-поціновувачі джазу заслуговують на набагато більше, ніж щоденник самозакоханої панянки, нехай навіть українського походження.

This open-hearted book is nothing more than what it claims to be: an impressionistic account of the author's relationship with Bill Evans during the year leading up to his death, when she was a very young woman. They were lovers in every sense of the word, and it would be difficult to read this account and not be moved by it. There is something about Verchomin's honesty that keeps the reader very much on her side, wanting her to come through the tragedy of Bill's death and live a fulfilling life--and she seems to have done just that.

An intimate look at the last few years of Bill Evans' life, as chronicled by his girlfriend and muse. I thought there'd be more about Evans himself, who is something of an enigma, but the book mostly focuses on Evans finally succumbing to years of drug addiction, and Verchomin's coming of age in her early 20s. Heavy stuff at times, but a well written memoir.

An impressive recount of the last period of Bill Evan's life, seen through the eyes of his girlfriend at the time. It's interesting to find out that some things that are written about, interviews, concerts and such can still be found (even though mostly audio only) on Youtube for example. This gives an extra dimension to the story and makes it feel more real.

Happened across the introduction that John McLaughlin wrote and knew I had to read the book.
As he put, this book does give an insight into Bill’s
life, the complex subtle relationship they had. And it’s very clear from Laurie’s poetic description that Bill was almost permanently aware of the nearness of death.
Heartbreaking yes. Frustrating yes. C’mon man. You were fucking self aware like no other and you still drugged yourself to death? You had love, super talent and expression, a career, praise, and none of that was enough? Love you Bill, but man this book doesn’t waver in its description of your drug use. It grossed me out and made me really wonder just what it was that you were trying to escape from in life. Argh!
But I do love the way Laurie described your playing, how it affected the audience, her. Your hunched over position with eyes closed. The one we all picture.

I always feel gross after reading about an addict’s behavior and related health issues.

This is a troubling tale that I may have found romantic in my late teens or early twenties. Now, the Bill Evans’ final years simply strike me as woeful and wasteful.

The writing style is interesting...sparsely self-absorbed? My husband loves this book, but I wasn’t as impressed.

У авторки мізків десь як і в авторки "50 відтінків сірого". Вміння писати - клас третій. Підмет-присудок-додаток. Читання викликає нестримне бажання розповісти автору про інверсію.

Плюси:
- читається за кілька поїздок в метро
- папір хороший, аж шкода дерев

Мінуси:
- все решта


Висновок: почитайте "Вікіпедію", буде більше толку і менше бажання плюватись.

Купила цю книгу після того, як прочитала передмову Олексія Когана, і побачила, що перекладач - Віктор Морозов. Те, що всередині не тягне на назву "Кохання" на обкладинці.

Перепрошую, якшо зафреймлю, та у мене склалось враження, що підприємлива жіночка просто вирішила заробити грошей на історії своїх стосунків з відомим мертвим музикантом.

Love it! Listening to Bill Evans music is like watching the rain. Sometimes we feel sad, other times we are calmed by it, but mostly we are entranced in its beauty.

Нагадує історію Патті Смітт і Роберта. Меланхолійна і чесна. Завжди хочеться жити в Америці 70-х після таких книжок.

Started & finished TBL today. Very readable & entertaining. The author was Evans' romantic partner during the last year or son of his life so there is an intimacy & insights you don't normally get in a book like this. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would.

Dit boek gaat eigenlijk meer over Laurie Verchomin dan over Bill Evans --in alle eerlijkheid wordt het ook niet helemaal zo geadverteerd, als zou het over Evans gaan. Maar toch, ik was misleid en een beetje ontgoocheld in de zelfverheerlijking van Verchomin --terwijl ze elkaar niet echt zo vreselijk lang hebben gekend. Misschien weet ik niet genoeg over hun relatie, of over haar betekenis. Langs een kant is het heel erg interessant, maar niet op dezelfde manier zoals pakweg Patti Smith over Mapplethorpe en zichzelf schrijft. Bizar. En misschien net daarom interessant.
