Ona proučava živote nestalih ljudi, njihove ličnosti i ponašanje, i dolazi do šokantnog otkrića.

There is much to like in Leona Deakin's debut crime thriller, elements of it make for an exciting and compulsive read. I am uncertain as to whether this is the first in a series, but I was engaged with the main protagonist, a dispassionate and analytical Dr Augusta Bloom, a psychologist who specialises in psychopaths, dangerous and otherwise, and a private investigator. She works with the ex-intelligence services, Marcus Jameson, the polar opposite to Bloom as a personality. Jameson brings in Bloom on the odd circumstances surrounding the disappearance on her birthday of a military mother, Lana, suffering PTSD, whose teenage daughter, Jane, has often been looked after by his sister, Claire, when Lana has been on military tours. Lana left behind a birthday card she had received, strangely to celebrate her 1st birthday, with the following inside the card, Your gift is the game. Dare to play?

It turns out there are others, just like Lana, who have received the same birthday card and disappeared on their birthdays too, but the police are unwilling to take this seriously, and only family and friends left behind are desperately worried. As Augusta and Marcus begin to investigate, it becomes clear that the picture they had built up of those disappearing is less than accurate, and what they have in common is a range of traits that raise deep concerns, something that results in a family tragedy. This has the police taking a greater interest, led by Chief Superintendent Steve Barker and his team, working with Bloom and Marcus. It soon becomes apparent more than a 100 people have been lured into playing the 'game', invited on their birthdays, and it turns out one of them is a high ranking police officer with a shady reputation. Who is behind these sinister mind games and identifying people with such personality traits, and what is their aim?

I read a lot of crime fiction and thrillers, and whilst this is an enjoyable and entertaining read which many readers will like, for me there were some problematic issues with it, unfortunately many of which are spoiler territory. What I can say is that when measured with the best writing in this genre, this crime read needs significantly tighter plotting and the characterisation feels a little on the weak side. Having said all that, I would like to underline the fact that I am certain many crime fiction readers will love this unconditionally, and I will definitely read whatever Leona Deakin writes next. Many thanks to Random House Transworld for an ARC.

In the beginning of Gone by Leona Deakin I was a bit confused. I was not sure I as going to like it despite all the good things that I had heard about it. Never fear - once this book got going it did not stop! This is a scary, thrilling ride that I really enjoyed. I am already looking forward to another book in this series. As long as you take the story for what it is you will really enjoy it, some parts are a little far fetched but still enjoyable.

Psychologist Augusta Bloom and her colleague Marcus Jameson get caught up in a strange case of missing people. 4 people that they know of have gone missing, all on their birthdays after receiving an interesting birthday cards. The more they investigate the more it seems that the real victims are not who they believe they are. It gets dangerous in many ways but they don't give up.

Thanks yo Random House UK, Transworld Publishers, Black Swan and Netgalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased.

I received a copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

The start was a bit confusing, but despite this, I was quickly drawn into the story and the intriguing premise. There is a lot of psychological science, but it is all explained in fairly basic language so that even the least aware person can keep up. There are also some very relevant messages and thought provoking ideas about how we use social media and how we present to the world. I will definitely think twice before filling in questionnaire’s again. There are a lot of characters, in this and this can sometimes put me off, but this flowed really well. I appreciate that my copy was an ARC, but the formatting was horrific in the version I received. I had to reread some parts to try and see what I had missed.

The main characters are a little two dimensional on occasions, but interesting enough for this story, there is room for character development in a possible future sequel.

I would of loved to give this 5 stars, but I found the pacing a little bit flat, it didn’t keep me on the edge of my seat or not wanting to put the book down. I rated this as 3.5 rounded up to 4 as this is a very good novel for a debut.

Gone Is a rerelease of the Book Mind Games.
It's a psychological crime thriller and has quite an interesting premise.
Its told from multiple POV and was quite the suspenseful mystery with plenty of twists and turns to keep your attention.
Marcus Jameson and Augusta Bloom, Ex-spy and criminal psychologist but also partners in there own PI business.
Their latest case involves the disappearance of a family friend's mother who has vanished after receiving a mysterious birthday card with the message "Your Gift is the game, dare to play".
Upon further investigation it is revealed there are others that have disappeared in similar circumstances.
As the mystery deepens and the numbers climb its not long until the police themselves get involves.
I did like the dynamic between Bloom and Jameson it worked well and I found this to be an intriguing read, its clear the author knows her psychology.
I did guess quite early on what the twist was but this was still an enjoyable experience.
Overall this was a solid read.
I voluntary reviewed a copy of Gone.

What an idea for a book!
Random people on their birthday are sent a card asking ‘dare you play’ and are given a web link to go to
And then they disappear
But then even though they are missing they are dangerous
Nothing seems to link them BUT psychotherapist Augusta Bloom and her partner ( ex Secret Service ) Marcus Jameson think different and are on a mission to find out just ‘what is going on’
I liked both of them, both quirky characters, unusual and interesting to get to know
Once a link is established ( wont say what it is ) there is a lot of information to read on the thing that links all those missing and its fascinating reading!
I loved the travelling in Yorkshire throughout the book ( lived in Bradford 10 years ) and loved the almost ‘over the garden fence’ type of narrative
The downer for me was the ‘twist’ that was apparent to me as soon as the person appeared in the book and I did question how the fab team of Bloom and Jameson didn’t also see it within a few seconds
Nonetheless no book is perfect and taking all things into account its a ballsy debut brimming with excitement and facts and a great theme running through it which was an enjoyable read
7.5/10

People are disappearing. They all seem to be playing some kind of game. There's a birthday card left behind saying"YOUR GIFT IS THE GAME. CARE TO PLAY" written inside it. It seems the victims volunteered to disappear. Dr and psychologist Agusta Bloom is called in to investigate along with her partner, Marcus Jamieson.

The first thing that drew me to this book was the cover. It looked liked the chair challenge in The X Factor. I didn't particularly like Dr Bloom. Marcus Jamieson, the MI5 operative was more likeable. They did work well together. The book starts of slowly as we are introduced to some of the characters. There was so much potential for this story. Its plotline a little different from the normal. The ending, for me, was a little disappointing. The two simultaneous stories made me confused. I sure many other readers will disagree with me.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Random House UK, Transworld Publishers for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I was sent a card in the post wishing me a “happy first birthday’ which immediately had me intrigued, but then reading the greeting inside YOUR GIFT IS THE GAME.DARE TO PLAY? I must admit intrigue turned to excitement, like a fool I’m always the first to volunteer for a ‘dare’ but as they normally end in tears, I had my reservations about this one! That’s not the case for the four missing strangers in Gone by Leona Deakin, they jump in feet first with no thought of the consequences of playing a game they know nothing about! Despite my initial reservations Gone turned out to be a dark, psychological thriller, with lashings of intrigue and suspense.

I must admit to begin with I wasn’t certain that Gone was a book I would enjoy as there are two simultaneous stories that run alongside each other, the first focuses on the missing persons, the other on a disturbed child called Seraphine. There are also several characters that are introduced to the reader fairly early on in the book, but once I had them sorted in my head, I found it a difficult book to put down as curiosity got the better of me. This isn’t your ‘typical’ missing person case, no one’s been kidnapped or taken against their will, in fact the people who have disappeared seem to have gone voluntarily, leaving behind families, friends and family, without a backward glance. Why? How are they connected? How are they singled out? Are they victims or are they something far more sinister? What are the rules of the sick, twisted game? Are all questions Dr. Augusta Bloom a Psychologist who frequently works with the police and Marcus Jameson who worked for MI6 are intent on finding the answers too.

I did feel the author barely scratched the surface of the main protagonists characters, but to be honest it didn’t matter one iota as my interest very much lay with the missing people and their story’s. Although in main the story is a hunt for the missing people, I found the most intriguing part revolved around the people who were invited to play. It came as no surprise to find out the author is a psychologist, her knowledge shines through as she explains the psychological aspects of the game, and gets inside the heads of those playing. These are the characters I found this most intriguing, the most disturbing, and yet the most fascinating.

With an imaginative plot and a fascinating psychologist-cum-private detective Gone made a refreshing change from most books in the genre, and although some may not enjoy the slower pace of this book, I would urge you to give it a go especially if you enjoy books featuring psychopaths that involve profiling (I found these bits a fascinating read). Although I guessed the ‘twist’ by the halfway mark, I still enjoyed how the author brought all the threads together. A word of advice to those who fill out those inconsequential social media questionaries, Gone will definitely make you think twice about filling them out in the future, however harmless they may seem! Despite the slow start Gone turns into an accomplished first novel, and I’m looking forward to reading further books by Leona Deakin.

I LOVED this.
Definitely the most addictive debut I’ve read recently, peppered with extraordinarily engaging and fascinating characters with a central theme I am always drawn towards. I say no more on that particular thing.
Dr Augusta Bloom is my favourite type of main protagonist, aptly backed up by ex MI6 agent Jameson, a brilliantly readable duo brought to vivid life by the author and thrown into an absolutely intriguing drama that will keep you up late turning those pages. And then there’s Seraphine. Who I’m absolutely crazy about.
Mind Games indeed. I hesitate to give too much away but this is excellent story telling done with spot on pacing and pitch perfect twist placement, characters to die for and a game of wits that will challenge yours.
A refreshing take on a theme, beautifully written, cleverly crafted and has left me longing for more.
Highly Recommended.

Gone by Leona Deakin is a unique psychological thriller from the author and her debut novel.
The story starts with Dr Augusta Bloom who specialises in Child psychology counselling 14-year-old Seraphine Walker. She has been accused of stabbing the Caretaker of the school. They do not know the reason why. Seraphine has Psychotic tendencies. Then Dr Augusta Bloom is then asked by her partner Marcus Jameson (ex MI6) to investigate 4 missing people. One of which is a family friend. The 4 people have gone missing after receiving birthday cards inviting them to ‘play a game’. First, they think it is a bit of harmless fun but, when more people go missing under unusual circumstances. They realise that something is not right about the disappearances and they seem to become linked in some way. Marcus and Augusta decide to investigate what’s happening to these disappearances without the help of the police.
I liked the premise of this story. I found it original and intriguing and full of suspense But, along the way I got confused to what is going on. 4 stars from me. Thank you NetGalley and Random house for a copy of this book.

Gone (or Mind Games) is the first book in a series featuring Dr Augusta Bloom and it was only whilst writing this review that I found out there is another book due out in April 2020 so I’m absolutely thrilled and have already pre-ordered it.

Dr Augusta Bloom works in London as a psychologist with her ex-M16 agent/Private Investigator partner Marcus Jameson. When Lana, a family friend of Marcus, disappears on her birthday leaving a young teenage daughter behind they start to investigate and find Lana is one of several, seemingly unconnected people who has disappeared on their birthday leaving their lives and families behind after receiving a “birthday card” inviting them to play a game.

I absolutely love psychological thrillers especially when they feature strong female characters and Gone has two brilliantly feisty, slightly unhinged and utterly wonderful characters: Dr Augusta Bloom and teenage psychopath Seraphine who are thrown together at the beginning of the book and have a history and connection which affects both women with devastating consequences.

Highly addictive and a fabulous debut novel full to the brim with twists and turns and I absolutely, completely and thoroughly recommend it (can’t wait for book 2 now)

This thriller has an intriguing premise. Psychologist, Dr Augusta Bloom and ex-spy, Marcus Jameson, become involved in the investigation of a missing person – that of a friend of Jameson’s sister. Soon, the pair realise that at least four people have vanished in the same way; receiving a birthday card daring them to ‘play a game,’ before, literally, stepping out of their life and leaving behind jobs, children and family.

With an emphasis on social media (this book will really make you think twice about filling in online quizzes or surveys!), I found this is interesting twist on the usual disappearance meaning you have a victim. However, in the end, I did find this – not formulaic – but slightly obvious. The main plot twist was visible from a great distance, while Marcus was a little too hot headed and unsuspicious for an ex member of the secret service. We learn of Bloom’s demons and the background of her life.

Overall, this had potential. I believe that there is to be a second in the series and I would give it a try, but would hope for a little more difficulty in spotting the ending. Rated 3.5.

Labai gerai susiskaitė knygoje pateikti psichologiniai momentai.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Random House UK, Transworld Publishing for an advance copy of Mind Games, a psychological thriller set in London and Yorkshire featuring psychologist Dr Augusta Bloom and her PI partner Marcus Jameson.

When teenager Jane asks Jameson, a family friend, to help find her mother he is determined to help but Augusta is less convinced until she learns the details. Lana received a first birthday card on her birthday saying “Your gift is the game. Dare to play?” then she disappeared and she isn’t the only one. A social media appeal has given Jane the names of three other people who have disappeared after receiving a card.

I must admit that I found Mind Games to be a compulsive, thrilling read in terms of the plot and action but there were other parts that I really didn’t like so overall it is a bit of a mixed bag for me. I have erred on the plus side in my rating because the plot is exciting and has an unusual premise - not anything I was expecting. I found myself turning the pages feverishly to find out what was coming next and walking away for a few minutes when it got tense. Initially the book was hard to get in to with constant changes of perspective, Augusta and Jameson, Lana and the mysterious scenes between Augusta and her teenage patient Seraphine which do not have any obvious relevance although it’s fairly obvious what Seraphine is. I did, however, like the way Augusta’s past and Seraphine’s role in it are slowly revealed, again it’s quite unexpected.

My main reservation about the novel is the labelling and generalisation of one class of people (I can’t say more without issuing spoilers) but it made me deeply uncomfortable. I prefer to see people as individuals rather than one of many with the same characteristics.

The characters are interesting. Jameson an ex British Intelligence Officer is smart, warm and caring. Augusta is cool, private and fiercely analytical. Aspects of her past are explored but we learn little about him. This and the way the novel ends rather inconclusively lead me to suspect there may be a sequel in the pipeline.

On the whole Mind Games is a good read. 3.5*

Leona are potențial, asta am simțit.

Dar man patiko pagrindinė veikėja Augusta Blum.

Knyga, kurioje rasite visko. Ir trilerio elementų, ir mįslę, ir tikrai įdomius veikėjus. Sakyčiau, vieną už kitą. Šio romano tiek tyrėjai, tiek nusikaltėliai pasirodė ne iš kelmo spirti. Bet jau galima nujausti artėjantį bet... Bet manęs neįtikino motyvai. Paties žaidimo motyvai. Jie buvo aiškūs, ypač pabaiga viską suguldė į reikiamus stalčiukus, tačiau vis tiek - tikiesi bombos, o gauni bomboškę, kur garso daugiau, nei veiksmo. Nepaisant to efekto stiprumo trūkumo, mielai skaityčiau ir kitas dalis, nes net ir ta romantikos dalis čia pasirodė miela, tikiuosi ir linkiu kai kuriems veikėjams laimingos pabaigos, tad norėsis ateityje sužinoti, ar jie ją susikurs.

Leidyklos dovana.

Kiek kitokio tipo trileris, daugiau psichologinis. Knygos tema labai patiko, graziai ispletota, nors ir atspejau kaltininka, bet demesi islaike iki galo. Kiek pritruko itampos ar intrigos, todel ivertinimas siek tiek avansu. 🙂

Thanks to Netgalley for sharing a copy for review.

Well, I finished this book in a day, the fastest I have read a book all year which I think says a lot. This is despite the horrific formatting on the version I received, which meant I had to reread several sections more than once to figure out what was going on, and also despite the fact that I figured out the plot at about 40%. But it did keep me hooked to the end, with a caveat that I will get into below.

It is very clear from very early in that the author is an expert in psychology. She weaves the science quite well into the plot, and takes care to explain in basic language what it means so that even the least aware person can keep up. Second, the plot abounds with messages that ring true: for example the exhibitionism we tend to display on social media and how we use different forms differently. Clearly the author has a relevant message for today’s world of interconnected realities and its inherent dangers. The game itself was also quite intriguing a concept. The writing is excellent and the use of words is superb.

That said, there were a few things I didn’t really like which explains the rating. First was the pacing - the whole book felt quite flat to me, and I had a bit of difficulty getting excited or really thrilled. I find a god thriller is one that keeps me on the edge of my seat while I’m reading it, but I didn’t get that feeling with this novel. Second, the character of Marcus felt a bit odd to me - a spymaster who seems to lose all his skills at the first hint of a relationship. Third, I didn’t really feel a connection with Augusta even though she is the main character. I wasn’t sure exactly how to treat her in my mind - is she the “lonely spinster” type, the wiry elderly lady type, a Ms Marple level of super detective, or a Natasha Romanova type of deception artist? And finally, at the end, I understood the Why of the whole plot, but I didn’t really get the So What.

Overall, a commendable effort for a first novel. I enjoyed reading this book, and others might as well especially if you are looking for a fast read.

This book had everything that captured my heart as a thriller. I love books which can make my pulse speed up knowing that the entire story was a race against time.

4 people disappeared on their birthday, and Dr. Augusta Bloom and her partner Marcus were soon embroiled into this mystery. The only clue they had was an invitation to the game. An online game played by dangerous people started by dangerous ones.

My first book by author Leona Deakin, and what a ride it was, balanced perfectly with its twists. Augusta Bloom was an enigma, I loved how the layers of her characteristics were revealed slowly. I thought there were many which were hidden deeper in her psyche. Her brain and her capacity to read people intrigued me the post, and they were the best tools against the people playing the game.

The book had tinges of the Blilue Whale game which became popular some time ago. I would have loved if the story had delved more into its darkness, but it kept to the safer side. The writing kept its pace steady where all the threads were nearly tied at the end with a few shockers.

The story was addictive to say the least, and the characters hidden, and nothing thrilled me more than to know this was the first in a series. I had three words. Bring. It. On.

It's your birthday Wahoo!!! You get a card through your door, you have no idea who sent it, you open it, it is plain white, but inside is a message!

YOUR GIFT IS THE GAME.
DARE TO PLAY?

That is all the police have, a birthday card, and they are not really *that* worried about a person going missing, it is an adult after all, they probably have their reasons.

But, as more and more people are coming forward to say that their loved ones have received the same card and have also gone missing, psychologist and private detective Dr. Augusta Bloom, realises that this is more than just a silly game, this is turning into something very dangerous indeed.

With 2 story-lines running simultaneously alongside each other, a very clever story emerges, why would these people just up-and-leave? What is the game? and why are they only targeting certain people?

A great thriller to keep you your toes

I haven’t read a straight crime thriller set in the UK for some time. I find that they tend to be pretty tame in comparison to their American counterparts, or they go overboard with the gore in order to try and stand out. I was pleasantly surprised that this novel fit neither of those stereotypes.

Sixteen-year-old Jane’s mother was missing. Lana left no note, no money, nothing to help ensure Jane’s safety. All that was left was a card saying “Happy 1st Birthday”, containing the message “YOUR GIFT IS THE GAME. DARE TO PLAY?” printed inside.

Frustrated by the lack of interest from the police, Jane reached out online and made a chilling discovery. Lana wasn’t the only one to receive this card – it was discovered in four other missing person cases.

Turning to a family friend for help, Jane just wants her mother to come home. Can former MI6 agent Jameson and his psychologist partner Bloom find Lana and the others? Or will they discover that the missing people are not the ones who need to be saved?

Despite a somewhat shaky start, I was quickly drawn into the narrative, and found the premise to be quite intriguing. The main characters are slightly two dimensional on occasion, but interesting enough for this story and are ripe for development in a possible future sequel. Some of the plot devices were obvious, but on the whole the novel is absorbing and well worth a try.

Gone appears to be a re-release of Deakin’s debut novel, Mind Games.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Gone was an incredibly enjoyable, even addictive read, if a bit far-fetched, and a very assured debut novel from Leona Deakin.

Four people - Lana Reid, Faye Graham, Stuart Rose-Butler and Grayson Taylor - are missing; four people with, on the face of it, nothing in common, other than the fact that they all disappeared on their birthdays and all received a rather unusual birthday card beforehand. But as it turns out, that’s not all they have in common. As psychologist Augusta Bloom and her colleague Marcus Jameson investigate and the mystery deepens, things quickly get more and more alarming. Where have the disappeared people gone, and what if they are not, in fact, the ones in danger?

Gone has a very original and intriguing plot which really kept me turning (or rather swiping) the pages - I read it in just over a day. I’m not sure I entirely engaged with or felt like I got to know the main characters, Bloom and Jameson (hmm, maybe I’m a psychopath?), but they were likeable and interesting enough, with plenty of scope for further development. (The ending clearly leaves the door wide open for a sequel/series featuring the same characters. I’d definitely read that.)

I did have suspicions about certain things, but I didn’t guess the truth until right before it was revealed. In retrospect I probably should have done, but that probably reflects how cleverly the author misdirects the reader.

An excellent read, even if credulity was a little bit strained at times.
