At the pinnacle of his Hollywood career, Garrison Prince’s reign ends tonight.

As plain old Gary Prinz, he can pursue his Bible education, buy a bungalow in Pasadena, acquire a few chickens, and marry the girl of his dreams. He just never imagined trading the silver screen for a pulpit would wreak such havoc.

A cigarillo girl, Lucinda Ashton spends her days with her boyfriend, Gary, and her evenings selling candy and “gaspers” to the Hollywood elite at the Taj Mahal Theater.

However, when gunshots ring out just as intermission begins, Lucinda finds herself smack-dab in the middle of a brouhaha that leaves three dead, and no one has a clue why.

All the police know is that the evidence points to Lucinda as the killer and Gary as the intended target.

Four new friends, one young orphan, and a potluck of clues that don’t seem to fit anywhere leave the police baffled, Lucinda in fear for her freedom, and Gary ready to trade in his acting shoes for gumshoes if it’ll save his “Cinda.”

The first book in the Ever After Mysteries combining beloved fairy tales and mysteries, The Last Gasp. This Cinderella retelling blends a murder with enough crime and story clues to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Oh, was this bio day? Oops! I forgot. I was lost in my latest manuscript. Umm... bio. Yeah.

Hi! I’m Chautona Havig. (for those who care, that’s Shuh-TONE-uh HAVE-ig). Yeah. Just work with me here. I should have used a pseudonym, but when you grow up with a name like Chautona, it kind of sticks.

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. ~ Hebrews 10: 23–25

Those aren’t just words on a page for me–they’re why I write. I write to encourage my brothers and sisters in Christ. The stories I create are to make people laugh, cry, question, consider.

They’re for you.

When the world screams for hope, I try to point you to the true Source of hope–Jesus.

Sometimes life in the church no longer seems a refuge from the pain of a self-serving world around us, but through my stories, I try to point you to the only Refuge that can truly help–the Father’s Everlasting Arms.

And sometimes we just need an escape from the monotony, the emptiness we see around us. We need joy, laughter–what I like to call “just the write escape.”

Christian fiction without apology or pretense–lived, not preached.
What does that even mean?
It means I care–about you. About your walk with Jesus. I care about the words you put before your eyes, the mental pictures those words conjure. It’s difficult to express just how much I love my brothers and sisters in Christ. It’s difficult to share just how much I love you.

But I do.

And I write for you. I sit in my little house in California’s Mojave Desert and I write to show you why one sister believes one thing, why a brother believes another. I write to show you how some Christians handle trials or triumphs–for you. So when you’re faced with something–good or bad, it doesn’t matter–maybe it’ll spark a memory. Maybe that memory will smolder until you pull out your Bible and see what the Lord said about it–about His great love for you. For YOU!

And maybe, just maybe, you’ll share that love with another hurting, confused, or blessed-with-more-than-she-knows-what-to-do-with soul.

I just happen to think that’s the most blessed giving anyone could hope to receive.

A new who-dun-it fairy tale series. The twisting and turning left me guessing with anticipation. Complete with a shoe, a prince, and Cinda, this retelling captivated my attention with the author's superb imagination and detective skills.

The setting is the 1920s, Beverly Hills with the newness of the moving pictures and the promise of new film inventions on the horizon. Money and glamor surrounded the industry and the stars. Enough for murder and mystery? Bang. Bang. Bang. You'll have to read this riveting novel and throw your guess onto the stage to mingle with others. Will you be correct? Was I? No spoilers here.

Bravo, Chautona!

This was different from what I'm used to reading by the author but was not disappointed.

I loved the Christian overtones, the banter of the characters, and the 1920's that were well represented in the story. She made me feel as if I was there. Her wonderful descriptions of the setting left visions in my head as I pictured where they were. She definitely did her research into the time period very well.

Enjoyed trying to figure out who the killer was before they were revealed in the story. Another great read.

this book was so wild and yet everyone in it was so chill about the wild stuff it was baffling xD I read a lot of cozy mysteries and I'm always interested to see unique ways people retell fairy tales (specifically Cinderella). this was fun on the retelling front, though it did require a lot of suspension of disbelief. overall it was just kinda okay, and I didn't love the writing style, but here we are. 3 stars from me!

I was hooked by the premise of a fairy tale retelling mystery series and was not disappointed. Ms. Havig has delivered a clever who-done-it filled with all of the fun of 1920's Hollywood. This retelling of Cinderella was complete with a prince, shoe and fairy godmother. Faced-paced, with danger lurking around every corner, this murder mystery is also filled with enough witty banter to keep the story light-hearted. I found this to be an enjoyable read and am looking forward to reading more in this series.

"The Last Gasp" by Chautona Having is the first book in the "Ever After Mysteries" series. This one is a remake of Cinderella. I am truly amazed at how a star that wants to give up the stage, I can't till you want job he wants, and you know you want to read the book yourself to know what career would be more rewarding then to be a film star, a shoe and three murders are all connected. This is a great start to watch promises to be a great series.

I read the book last year but hearing it read and the different voices the narrator uses was so much better.

So, I regret to inform readers that it has been a long time since I’ve read a Chautona Havig book. *Gasp* I know, I know. I have failed. But let me say this, I am glad I snatched up this one and I was reminded why I love her work so much.

For starters, this fairytale retelling of Cinderella set to the backdrop of early Hollywood cinemas. Think Greta Garbo and early Clark Gable (pre-Gone With The Wind)–which was the best time in movie history. Everything was new and exciting and glamorous. It was also sketchy a filled with all sorts of backdoor dealing that could make ones’ skin crawl, but I digress.

The Last Gasp (what they used to call cigarettes) is a blessed torture of who-done-it and will-she-ever as murder knocks on the front door of a superstar and his girl. I love their tender affections for each other. He is trying to figure out how to make a good life and follow the calling God placed on his heart. She is unsure about some things, while determined and focused on others. Together, they are a beautiful mess and I love it.

The character I was really digging on was Mrs. Cohan – that woman has some sass and it was fun to read her. She definitely added some punch to the story. I pictured a younger version of my own grandma as neither woman had no issue saying what she thought, whether people l liked it or not.

I also enjoyed the twist on the Cinderella part. Yes, there are “step-family” like characters, but they take it to a whole new level of evil.

Listen- just get the book. It will be the perfect read for this end of summer relaxation, maybe once the kids are at school. Chautona writes in a way that is simple and pleasant all the way through.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

The Last Gasp by Chaurona Havig is the first in Ever After Mysteries series from Celebration Lit Publishing. This starts a series of fairy tale retelling and this one is a mystery retelling of Cinderella, and told in a unique way. I wasn’t sure how this story would play out but it did and very well. I enjoyed getting to know the main characters, Gary and Lucinda. It was fun for me to try and figure out the mystery going on here. I really liked Lucinda, and the way she seemed different from most girls who have, she had it more together than most. And the ending was one that readers could live with as everything woven together showed the mystery play put.

I give this one a 4 Stars. If you enjoy a good clean mystery with a little bit of faith mixed in it all, you will enjoy this one.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Okay you guys this is a fun new series by Chautona Havig! She combines the fairy tale genre with mystery, suspense and romance! This one is pretty much hinting at Cinderella. I mean with a name like Cinda... that was a pretty cute clue. The setting was unique and I loved it. Enter into Beverly Hills in the roaring 20's. The start of moving pictures and new film technology in the horizon. We meet Cinda and Gary and embark on a fun suspenseful adventure that truly captivates you and keeps you guessing!

Of course I am not going to give you much on this one because if I did I would truly spoil it for you. I have read quite a few of Chautona's stories and I must say that I think this is my favorite of hers so far. I just love this unique take on a story and what it incorporates! You should definitely try it out for yourself!

Do you enjoy fairytale retellings? This creative 1920’s mystery retelling of Cinderella set in Hollywood was a fun listen. Gary Prinz aka the famous Garrison Prince is ready to trade in his acting career for Bible school. Becoming a minister and marrying his beloved Cinda are chief on his list. However, he has to quit his job first and share his true identity with his love who doesn’t realize he’s a famous actor and is currently working as a cigarillo girl.

On the night of his last movie premier, a murderer strikes and his costar and several other people wind up dead. The worst part? His future wife Cinda is named as the chief suspect when her shoe is discovered in the alleyway. With a studio producer and his wife turned detective along with a street orphan, Gary tries to do all he can to find the real killer and prove Cinda innocent.

I liked the story’s setting. The 1920’s are such an interesting era and this story captured the glitz and glamour of early Hollywood. While I suspected who the killer was pretty early on, I enjoyed how the mystery played out.

The characters were fun! I especially liked Gary and felt like he was the epitome of the handsome prince hero. There were times I felt Cinda was a little naive and vacillated between intelligent and clueless. She was a sweet character though and exemplified the Cinderella stereotype. Her boarding house landlady and daughters were particularly nasty and fit the roles of stepmother and stepsisters pretty well. I liked how many nods to the fairytale were included in the book.

I had the opportunity to listen to the audiobook version and enjoyed the way the narrator distinguished each of the characters. Her voice was easy to listen to and she really captured the 1920’s dialect and feel of the story.

All in all, a fun, creative mystery retelling with a spiritual message woven into the story. Recommend to those who enjoy Christian mysteries and fairytale retellings. I received a complimentary copy of the audiobook from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.

The Last Gasp is the first book in the Ever After Mystery series, and I have been so excited to read this one! I mean, I am excited to read all of them. Come on, fairytale retellings set in the 1920s with a little suspense added, how does that not sound amazing?

The Last Gasp is based off Cinderella, because who does not love a Cinderella retelling? I was curious to see how Havig was going to spin the tale, but she did it in a very clever way.

The novel is quite fast-paced, so it can be hard to keep up with at times. However, I enjoyed the characters, the mystery, the suspense...although somewhat predictable, what will keep you on the edge of your seat is how Lucinda's name will be cleared and how the culprit committed the crimes.

I also liked the addition of Herbie. He was such a fun and sweet character and ended up being my favorite. I wish there had been more of him.

I had received a copy of the book as part of the Celebrate Lit Blogging Team and was required to give an honest review.

THE LAST GASP by Chautona Havig is the first book in the Ever After Mysteries series. It’s the fabulous story of Gary Prinz and Lucinda Ashton during the glamour days of Hollywood in the 1920’s.

Gary Prinz came to Hollywood, like a lot of young men of the day, to make it big in Hollywood. He started out as a stunt and grunt man, but was soon seen as the next handsome leading man. He became Garrison Prince and starred in the newest movie THE STOLEN TITLE. However, it didn’t take long for all the glitz and glamour to be tarnished in Gary’s eyes. Finding faith and determined to quit showbiz, he enrolled and was accepted at the Bible Institute of Los Angeles. He saw his future as a preacher with Miss Lucinda Ashton, the woman he’s fallen in love with, by his side. He’d already told his boss that he won’t be playing leading man in the next film. He'd planned on making it public after the screening of present film, but Mr. Walker pushed his hand when he blindsided him with a big contract signing and announcement of the next film with the news media. He had to be truthful and tell them that he wasn’t signing a contract for this or any future films.

Lucinda Ashton found herself all alone and decided to move to Hollywood. She found a room at Ada Smith’s Boarding House, where she often felt like the Cinderella maid to the evil step-mother and the evil step-sisters. She got a job as cigarillo girl selling candy and “gaspers” at the Taj Mahal Theater making enough to get by and to save a little. The highlight of her day was getting to spend time with her new boyfriend, Gary. They would take walks and sit on the bench talking. It was in finding out about his faith and his desire to become a preacher that Lucinda had her own faith taking hold. She’s sure she falling for Gary and starts imagining a future with him.

On the night of the movie premier, Gary might have been unable to catch her attention, but when shots were fired, he’s determined to protect the woman he loves. Lucinda finds that the man protecting her, is Gary, but she also finds out he’s not the man she thought he was. Can she trust her feelings now? When several fall from the sniper’s shots before the evening is over, who were they aiming for? The victims or had they missed their shot? Can they prove that neither Gary or Lucinda had anything to do with the crimes committed? Will a missing shoe prove to be evidence against them? Will the unlikely friendship with another movie mogul and his wife help them? Will the truth help the friendship to bloom into real love? Or will events hinder their happily ever after?

THE LAST GASP is a fabulous story of mystery, intrigue, murder, friendship, truth, love and faith all wrapped up a loosely retelling of the fairy tale Cinderella with the evil trying to win over good, the lost shoe and the “prince” that saves the damsel from evil. The cover gives one the hint to the 1920’s the story is set in. The author’s use of the slang of that era and vividly sitting of the backdrop brings the story to life making the reader feel as if they stepped into the story. Love the Mrs. Cohan character as she takes no gruff from anyone, is someone to be reckoned with and she’s out to prove Lucinda innocent purely out of friendship. We all need a Mrs. Cohan in our corner!

THE LAST GASP is FIVE STAR reading that you will feel the need to read in one sitting. I highly recommend it to everyone.

I receive a copy of this book with no requirement or expectations of a review. All opinions are completely my own.

As a child, I was never really enamored with princesses and fairy tales the way that other girls were. Romance just isn’t my cup of tea. Unless, of course, the subject is Belle: secluded castle, grand library with a sliding book ladder…but I digress. With the exception of wearing a rather glitzy Cinderella dress for my first piano recital in second grade (a harbinger, perhaps, since I quit a few years later), I have been staunchly in the pioneer, historical-fiction camp. I do, however, love mysteries, and that is what caught my eye with Celebrate Lit’s new series, “Ever After Mysteries.” Intrigued by the amalgamation of fairy tale adaption, historical fiction, and mystery, I had to check it out.

Chautona Havig kicks off the Ever After Mysteries with “The Last Gasp,” a 1920s adaptation of Cinderella. I know little about this time period, particularly in regard to theater and film, which made it fun to read about. The main character, Lucinda “Cinda” Ashton, works as a cigarillo girl, selling candy and cigarettes at the Taj Mahal Theater, until a night of chaos and murder points to her as the prime suspect. Her boyfriend, Gary Prinz, a charming little orphan boy named Herbie, and a cast of others band together to figure out who is behind the curtain of this crime spree.

Humor adds just enough lightheartedness to bring a smile to readers without detracting from the mystery, and the literary nods that Havig includes amuse those who look for them. I noticed, for instance, an homage to Snoopy early on in the narrative. The names used in “The Last Gasp” are, of course, very apropos, and several other parallels between the famous story that most know and cherish pop up throughout the narrative. Because of the combination of romantic and alarming elements, “The Last Gasp” does seem like an admirable merging of the Disney and Brothers Grimm versions! For anyone with concerns, however, this adaptation is clean and does not contain graphic details beyond a few brief mentions of blood.

There were times when the story execution reminded me of the movie “Clue” due to the wit and comical nature of some of the scenes, but there is also a deep undercurrent of faith and love. My favorite scene is when Gary witnesses to a wondering Mrs. Cohen, explaining “As for my reward, I have it already—salvation. I know it isn’t the done thing to talk about in society, but you asked. Some men are eager to share how to receive the Lord’s gift. I wish to teach those who already have it how to live in a way that reflects their gratitude for it.” To me, this speaks to the ultimate message of “The Last Gasp”: jealousy never cultivates contentment, and no matter how much or how little anyone has here on earth, the greatest possession of all is a relationship not with Prince Charming, but with King Jesus.

I was given a copy of this audiobook through CelebrateLit and this review is my own, honest opinion. I truly enjoyed the story and the narration, both. The story flowed well. It kept my attention from the very beginning. It is a Christian book that shows God's love without being preachy or offensive. It shows how people depend on God in good times and bad. The characters were quite well developed, even the minor players were believable. The story flowed well without any bumps in the telling. I was sorry to have the story end. As for the narration, I truly enjoyed listening to her. She added just the right inflections and did a good job changing her voice to fit the various characters. She has a pleasant, even voice that was easy to listen to. Overall I would rate this book a 4 out of 5-stars. I enjoyed the book and if you are looking for a clean, Christian, mystery audiobook this is for you. You won't be disappointed.

What a fun twist on the fairy-tale Cinderella! Author, Chautona Havig has a great brain for detail as she works in the Prince (Prinz), shoes, step-sisters, fairy god-mother, and so much more. I thought the mystery was well written, all the clues were there. I loved the nod to Lord Peter Whimsey (come on, Prinz sitting across from Cinda wanting to reach out and the police nearby.) It just made me smile and enjoy it all the more. And let’s not forget the nod to Austen as the book closes and we hear of country, short sermons, and definitely no chickens. Probably one of my favorite characters was Mrs. Cohen! She has a take charge attitude about her and a “do. not. mess. with. me” nonsense that really helped the story and our characters. Especially when you consider that this is a short story, you kind of need to have someone that can just be themselves but be able to get the ball rolling.

I listened to the audio version of this book. What was funny is that I actually listened to it in the car with my eldest son. A few times I turned it off to answer a text or check something and each time it was my son that reminded me to turn the audio back on. When we got home, I had a lot of kitchen work that needed to be done and I found it very interesting that said son kept finding reasons to be in the kitchen– an extra math lesson that he wanted to do and, “oh no, you can leave the audio on, it isn’t bothering me.” or “I’ll just rearrange this pantry shelf for you and make it more organized.” Neither of us were clueless about what was really happening here.

5 Stars. I am really impressed. I did not expect to enjoy a Cinderella story as much as I did.

Seriously, how did I not know there was a whole reimagined fairy-tale mystery series roaming around in bibliophile land?! Aptly titled ‘The Ever After Mysteries’ and Chautona Havig’s ‘The Last Gasp’ is the first book and my introduction to the series.

The book cover sets the tone with the campy, atmospheric ‘classic mystery’ influence which the story carries on. This reads very much like a golden age mystery. It’s set in the right era and I love the author’s use of the ‘current’ slang to add authenticity to the time and setting.

I’m not a Hollywood fan in this decade but, ironically, I had a huge fascination for the industry in it’s infancy. Did an extensive high school project on silent movies so this turned into an unexpectedly nostalgic read for me. 🙂

So, we have Hollywood glam vs poor working girl which lends itself beautifully to the Cinderella detailing…only not in a predictable way. I love how the author included all those beloved fairy tale elements in such a topsy turvy manner. They cropped up unexpectedly throughout the story and I got a bookish thrill every single time. Such fun. And so clever!

The mystery was pretty easy to solve (perhaps because of the fairy tale element) but I had a great time watching Gary and Cinda piecing together the clues. And, for an author who claims to not like romance, this one is pretty sighworthy!

I enjoyed listening to the audio edition to ‘The Last Gasp’, narrated by Christa DelSorbo.

The Last Gasp is written by Chautona Havig. This is Christian Historical Mystery, Fairytale retelling story. This is also book one in the Ever After Mystery series. Which is a series that will be written by multiple authors. I am super excited about this series, for it contains some of my favorites along with a debut author.

In this book we travel back to 1920s Hollywood era. This is a the dawn of a new era with movies and screen play staring evolve. We meet Hollywood legend Garrison Prince. He is ready to hang up the fancy hat and pursue a career in Bible education. He wants to settle down and live a pretty normal life. His girlfriend Lucinda works at the Taj Mahal Theater as a cigarillo girl.

Everything changes when gunshots ring out and three people are dead. Lucinda becomes the prime suspect. This is where the retelling of Cinderella (which is my favorite fairy tale) comes in. Lucinda is behind bars and trying to fight for her innocence and trying to figure out who would try and frame her. You’ll want to pay attention to ever character that is introduced so that you can try and solve the mystery.

The author has some some great research to ensure that this is as historically accurate as possible. I didn’t know a lot about 1920 Hollywood and it was interesting to learn about. This author writes a wide variety of genres and is so talented with her words.

The Last Gasp, by author Chautona Havig, is the first book in the new Ever After Mysteries series. This Christian mystery, romance is a fairytale retelling. Author Havig has blended Cinderella with some mystery, 1920s Hollywood, and inspirational faith to produce a uniquely fabulous story.

This is the story of Gary Prinz, a popular leading man, and Lucinda, a showcase theater cigarillo girl. Gary has decided to quit making movies so he can go to Bible College. Cinda does not realize that he is a movie star. One night they are both at the scene of a crime and his identity is revealed to her. This is the beginning of a wonderful mystery that had me turning pages and guessing who was guilty.

I found the dialogue sounded authentic and flowed seamlessly. One of my favorite things about a Havig book is its faith element. This particularly one did not disappoint me. I enjoyed the faith element that was generously woven throughout the story. There were surprises and twists that kept me guessing as I read. Tucked into the story were little nods to the fairytale, too.

This was a fun, entertaining, inspirational read. I highly recommend it. A book club would have a blast dissecting and discussing this one. The Roaring Twenties are a little wild for young teens, but I think sixteen and above would be fine reading this. It gets a 5 star rating from me. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

The Last Gasp is a fun fairy tale turned murder mystery. In this book, you meet a prince, or rather Gary Prinz who you might call a prince. He’s an actor and a starry one at that who keeps the girls glued to the screen. Throw in a cigarillo girl who doesn’t really know who he is other than her boyfriend and you’ve already got a fun time.

I mean think about it. His “cinda”, Lucinda thinks he’s just a plain old guy named Gary. She doesn’t know who he really is. To her he’s a man studying the Bible and ministry and they’re planning their own happily ever after on that life. Not on the life of a movie star. But he wants out of that.

And then. . . BOOM. Literally. Someone dies and things start going crazy.

Can Gary and Lucinda find out who is behind all the killings and prove her innocence before they lose their lives or end up in jail for good? And can Gary get out of his contract and start leading the life he really wants to live?

This is an expertly written book that kept me reading from the opening lines. I love the little boy as well. He’s cute and cocky and just plain fun.

What I think you should know:
The Last Gasp is a Christian Historical Fiction, Fairytale Retelling by Chautona Havig. It is the first book in the Ever After Mysteries Series, a series of standalone novels set in the 1920s, all as different fairytale retellings.

What I think about this book:
I am a fairytale enthusiast. I will happily read or watch one hundred different versions of the same story and try to guess how the author is going to make it their own. Havig opened this series up with a BANG! Lucinda Ashton is a cigarillo girl who has unknowingly fallen in love with a star. Gary is ready to leave his life behind to become a pastor, but Hollywood is not ready to let him go. This story was so much fun. I adored how Havig used words that were authentic to the time period, I was particularly excited to see ‘Get a Wiggle On”. I loved the Cohens and Herbie was tearing at my heartstrings. Even though this is a story that has been done 1000 times, Havig did an amazing job of making the story fresh and exciting , I can’t wait to read the rest of the series and will recommend this to everyone I know!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

It should come as no surprise that I love a good fairy tale retelling... and Cinderella happens to be a favorite! Throw in a murder mystery in 1920s Hollywood, and I couldn't wait to check out this unique story!

And I absolutely adored it... it was certainly different from the mysteries that I typically read, but it was that uniqueness that I loved. There were many nods to the Cinderella story that we all know and love, which I personally enjoyed... but being a murder mystery, it was definitely unlike any retelling that I had personally seen before. I truly found it to be the perfect blend of classic story elements with a unique story to keep me wanting more. The classic Hollywood setting was a perfect backdrop for the whole thing and really just tied the whole thing together quite beautifully. I truly wasn't ready for the story to end.

This is the first book in the Ever After Mysteries series and what a great start it was! I cannot wait to see what comes next in the series, I am here for all of them! If you enjoy a clean mystery and/or a fairy tale retelling, this is certainly one NOT to be missed!

** I received a complimentary copy of this book for consideration. All thoughts are my own.

Listening to the audiobook of The Last Gasp immediately transported me into the 1920’s with the glamour of the theater and movie stars. Lucinda was a cigarillo girl who sold ladies and gaspers to the theater goers. She is a hard working young lady who ironically, doesn’t follow the movies or the drama surrounding the actors. Ironically she falls in love and plans on marrying, Gary Prince, a legendary actor of the silver screen.

The clever use of the title and the retelling of Cinderella was masterfully written. Lucinda is framed for the murders of some actresses because her lost shoe was found at the murder scene. Enough clues were provided that I was able to solve the mystery and the motive which made me feel quite clever.
I recommend listening to the story. The characterization, pacing, and vocal quality of the narrator swept me into the story. The message of putting your trust in God and having faith to help you through difficulties was well done. This is the first book in the Ever After Mysteries, so look for more books to follow.

The Last Gasp by Chautona Havig is a charming adventure through the glamour and perils of 1920s Hollywood. This light-hearted romantic mystery was quick and fun to read (or in my case, listen to), great for winding down after a long day.

As much as I enjoyed it, I did feel that the plot was a bit rushed. The set-up of the murder was very well done, but I found the ending a bit anti-climactic. About half-way through the book, the focus seemed to shift from the investigation to the characters’ personal lives, causing the previous air of suspense to all-but disappear.

The narration was good, almost every character’s voice suiting their personalities and adding something special to the story. The only complaint I have in terms of narration is Gary’s voice. I just felt that it didn’t suit him at all and found it rather annoying.

Speaking of characters, I really liked the whole cast of characters in this book! They were all endearing (well, most of them anyway), fun, and entertaining. I’d say that they were the highlight of the book.

I’d recommend it to fans of Old Hollywood and character-driven romance with a touch of mystery.

OH.MY.WORD. I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!!! I can't express myself enough when I say YOU ALL NEED TO READ THIS! Although there was more romance in this one than her other books, I do have to say, it was one of her best ones I've read so far.

The Last Gasp is the retelling of Cinderella, but instead of a princess, the main character is a Cigarillo girl (Lucinda Ashton) and a Hollywood star (Gary Prinz).
During a premier for one of Gary Prinz's movies, the murder of 3 people leave everyone looking at Lucinda-the only girl who seems guilty. And now, Lucinda finds herself where she least expects- the jail.
As Gary and 2 friends help to uncover the truth about the true murderer, Gary cannot stop thinking about Lucinda. What was supposed to be a happy weekend, turn out to be both Gary's and Lucinda's nightmare.
And as Lucinda spends her nights in jail instead of her boarding house room, she knows she can't live without Gary.

As I'm reading this book, I slowly, but quickly find out who the murderer is, and lets just say, that I have never uncovered a murderer in a book so fast.
I loved this book so much, and I highly recommend. Now stop reading my review, and go get yourselves a copy!

Come back to the Roaring Twenties when Hollywood had yet to go to Talkies!
Lucinda went to California with stars in her eyes but had to settle for being a cigarette girl at a theater famous for showcasing premieres.
Gary Prinz, aka Garrison Prince has decided to forgo his status as a leading man to pursue Bible School and a simpler life. Some people are not happy with this decision and things go very wrong at the premiere of his final film before becoming an ordinary Joe.
With the vernacular of an iconic era, this story is full of suspense, mystery and danger and a little romance. Gary and Cinda are looking to please God even as they try to find a killer among the theater goers.
A great side character is the orphan on the streets, Herbie, and what he comes to mean to Cinda and Gary, as well as playing a vital part in the outcome of the mystery.
Great fun and a great start to the Ever After Mysteries series.

The Last Gasp, by Chautona Havig, is the first book in the Ever After Mysteries series. It is a feel-good and charming story. Good dialogue and situations keep the pages turning. Gary Prinz, leading man extraordinaire, is resigning from the movie world to go to Bible school. Lucinda, a showcase theater cigarette girl, and Gary are on the cusp of a long-term relationship, but Cinda has no clue who Gary truly is. Murder and mayhem may just keep them apart. I enjoyed this cozy mystery twist on a fairy tale set in the Roaring Twenties Hollywood. I particularly enjoyed the faith element threaded throughout the story with its balance of authenticity and reality. Havig does a great job of keeping the culprit’s identity a mystery till the end of the book, which makes for a good suspenseful read. As the book concludes, there is no cliffhanger ending, but I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

First in a series of fairy tale retellings, The Last Gasp by Chaurona Havig is worth picking up. It was a fairly quick read, but I enjoyed the characters, the look into 1920s Hollywood, and the mystery.

Gary and Lucinda were still shy in their relationship to each other, but both were sweet and of good character. I really appreciated how Lucinda was so careful to follow the rules at work and at her boardinghouse. Gary and Lucinda's caring nature was refreshing, especially in a time and place where selfishness tended to be the rule.

The mystery investigation was interesting, and it just seemed strange how they went about it. Not every detail was wrapped up, but enough so that our main characters could get on with their lives.

Those who enjoy this setting and like mysteries should read this book. I enjoyed it, and am looking forward to others in this series.

When thinking of a Cinderella retelling, my mind certainly never went to the world that Chautona Havig has created. Havig has taken something “ordinary” and “mundane” and used her creative genius to form a world brimming with new possibilities.

At the start of the book, Havig begins setting the stage with the main characters and we learn who is who. As the plot moves along, Havig does an excellent job of building the world and storyline. The plot moves along at a great pace and the character building is on par. But, this is what I have come to expect from a Havig book! Havig crafts great stories period.

While this is not a storyline I would have come up with, at the end, Havig will leave you believing that it is a wonderful real world. That’s the thing with great storytellers - they have the ability to take something no one else would dream of and make an amazing work of art out of it.

This was a fun mystery to read. Not only was the mystery itself intriguing, the setting in Hollywood in the 1920’s gives this book a feeling of the perceived “glamour” that existed in Hollywood during that era. The author does a great job of pulling the reader into that time period through the historical details that she scatters throughout the story. This storyline also loosely follows the fairytale of “Cinderella”, but not always in the way that you might think. The author gave it a new look which made the characters that much more interesting.

I also learned something that I didn’t know about that time period: At the time that the Hollywood mystique was growing, there was also a true spiritual revival happening in Hollywood. One of the main characters in the book, “Garrison Prince”, is a major movie star who has given his life to Christ and has felt called into the ministry. He’s giving up his movie career to go to seminary and is looking returning to being only “Gary Prinz” again. He is also planning to marry Lucinda Ashton, who wholeheartedly supports him in his plans for the ministry. But as Lucinda gets caught up in a murder case, it seems that their plans will have to be put on hold, unless Gary can discover the truth of what really happened that night in the movie theater.

Reading this book was like watching an old movie set back in those days. Truthfully, there are a couple of times that the storyline might have been stretched just a little too much to be believable, but it still worked very well. As with all of this author’s books, her characters are wonderful and you never know what twist she’s going to throw into the story.

Something to note: Both smoking and drinking alcohol is mentioned in this book, but it’s not done in a way that promotes either of these. It’s more a device to help the reader understand the historical content of the time.
