Guided by firefly light, Flora searches for the source of a mysterious melody coming from a nearby forest. But deep in the woods, things might not be what they seem. Is that bear playing the banjo? Or that frog, is it jamming on drums? Join Flora as she uncovers the secrets of the Shadow Songs!
Indie author, Baxter Bramatti released his second book with illustrator, Taylor J. Graham, “Shadow Songs,” on June 15, 2021.
This is the second story featuring Flora Figglesworth who we were introduce to in 2020’s “Moon Puppets.” The adventurous and imaginative Flora returns in this lyrical homage to forest animals and music.
Flora is woken by a tune coming from the forest in the middle of the night. She is a bold, intrepid and curious child who finds herself venturing into the forest to discover the origin of this tune.
Things are not what they seem… or are they? As Flora uses her hearing and visual senses to guide her, she finds that her perceptions are merely a misinterpretation of musical imagery. Thanks to the light of the fire flies, the truth is soon revealed… or is it?
The illustrations are well done with an animé feel. The colour theme is dark with deep greens and blues (because the story takes place at night), however the inclusion of fireflies to bring light and life to the imagery is clever. My only criticism is that the illustration formatting is not as crisp on e-book, it converts with pixilation.
This is a great story. The rhymes and rhythm are quite masterful. I think that readers will relate to Shadow Songs. We’ve all seen things in the shadows that weren’t what they seemed… or were they?
First, this is one book you can absolutely judge by its cover. The story is absolutely magical, and you can't help but enjoy Flora's journey through the woods in search of music. The illustrations are whimsical and bring the book to life. A book that readers of all ages can enjoy - and not just at bedtime.
