A bit confused by those dithyrambic reviews... Sure, M.O.M has some strong points and the pitch is a cool idea that can lead to a great series. But there's also so many weaknesses, the most important one being that it talks at great length about empowerment just to have Maya start actively working on understanding her powers and using them voluntarily thanks to her male romantic interest. Everything she gets in this issue is thanks to him... even the help of her own friend and coworker is only given to her after the guy told her she needed to talk to said friend. This issue dumps tons of feminism 101 dialogues but its story is deeply rooted in tired tropes that are anything but feminist.

It's great that this comic can start the conversation and make the general ideas of feminism available to more people, especially to younger people, and I'm still more than willing to give it a chance to improve. But it's frustrating that, so far, it's unable to do what it talks a big game about.

I actually liked the first one better but ain't no way I'm giving something made by Emilia less than the highest possible rating. My critical thinking flies out the window when it comes to my meow meow <3

Like the first issue, I enjoyed this one but did not love it.

The art remains great, and a particular shoutout needs to go to the page layouts, which are fluid and creative and striking, often unfurling into impressive full page spreads that flow well and read great. One caveat to this is that the big reveal page for the M.O.M costume is one of these two-page spreads, and the costume, set dead in the middle, is mostly lost in the crevice between the two pages, which is wildly disappointing. It probably looks great in digital, and that particular panel is depicted on the back of the issue, so not the biggest miss, but still an unforced error.

The same strengths about the dialogue I mentioned in the last review remain here: it's interesting, the noises of the world feel informative, and the offhand humor feels even sharper than before. There's also still plenty of exposition about various feminist issues, and a more effectively told dive into Maya's backstory.

Where it's starting to lose me, though, is in its insistence on telling rather than showing. Contrary to popular opinion, I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with that, and the forceful, to-the-reader dialogue is still strong and effective. But the problem is that it feels like it stops tracking with the narrative plot in the background. You're presented with a number of themes and ideas to ponder, but then the actual driving plot feels like it's left in the background and you're kind of just asked to go along with it and imagine that it has more heft than it actually does.

Maya is well realized and has momentum to her character, but none of it feels like it transfers to the plot, where she's allegedly hunting down a trafficking ring that, as far as I know, she only encountered (accidentally) once, followed by a montage that works showing her progress as a hero, but doesn't really feel like it advances the plot. The presumed villain does get more screentime though, and I thought the Harvey twist was exactly the type of fusion of real world thematic elements that were being discussed (formerly deadbeat dad comes back into the picture, and what that means for Maya and her son) with the plot (great final page reveal!) that the rest of the book should strive for.

But as of now the threads are all just a little loose, and when they get pulled back into the pattern, it feels like not enough thread was used to actually complete the pattern. Still one more issue to tighten it all up though.

Mal was anderes

The first comic did great at starting Maya's journey and giving her a bit of a backstory. This issue expands on that and finds Maya honing her powers in order to become a somewhat unconvential superhero. I love that Maya is so... normal - aside from the whole superpower thing. She's a mom wanting the best for her son, and doing what she can to improve their lives and the world around her. She is well written and it's refreshing to read a woman with flaws and self doubts and someone that isn't perfect. Looking forward to issue #3 after the cliffhanger! Another great issue from Emilia Clarke & co!

I rarely ever DNF comics but I gave up on this one - I found it really hard to follow. The plot is lost in a muddy mess of jargon-laden dialogue. Kind of feels like the authors just discovered feminism two years ago and thinks that no one else could possibly know what they’re referring to. Lots of declarative statements (“we can’t ever do x”, “everybody does x”) which tells me that the authors are very green, and have only really encountered 4th wave Twitter feminism. What I’m saying is that it lacks perspective. There’s no nuance to why these things are bad, or why the MC feels this way, just relentlessly ham fisted declarations on the gender binary and cosmetics.

I actually think I may have enjoyed this one more than the first. Super lovely and fluid writing with beautiful artwork. I loved the storyline as we get to see Maya grow, and of course, Emilia does an excellent job discussing gender and binaries and how this impacts us as humans. I really liked this one!!

Maya begins to assemble a team of trusted people to help her help others. I love this, that she doesn't try do it alone and accepts help. Her team is so supportive.
She has trained to gain control over her powers .
We also get to learn more of Maya's past and what she has overcome.
There are two villain plot lines so intrigued to see how that will be wrapped up in the last issue.

Definitely enjoyed this issue, got to see a little more backstop from the main character.

Also, loved the little nostalgia that were drawn (Sailor Moon/Totoro)

This second issue presents a balanced combination of exposition as well as moving the story forward. It presents more backstory on Maya to understand her motivations and I found her conversation flashback with her friend Tiff to be quite interesting, especially considering when this issue has been released – does SB8 sound familiar? However, as I was reading this part, and considering how convoluted our reality might be, there is a bit that resonated which I think unintentionally feels like an inspirational message for all those who are fighting for human rights: “...we need to remember, all us down here – we need each other. We need to be kind to each other.”
