The balance of life and death must be protected at all costs.
Nivian had never failed to Reap a marked soul. That is, until she meets Kain Evers, a Hunter and the only being on earth with the power to destroy her.
When Reapers start to go missing, the Balance is thrown into turmoil, forcing Nivian and Kain to trust each other as they search for answers. Which is no easy task as they fight the feelings growing between them.
As mortal enemies, they were never meant to work together, now they're forced to protect each other if they want any hope of righting the Balance before all is lost.
Born and raised in the PNW, Ali Winters is a USA Today bestselling and the award-winning author of The Vampire Debt series and The Hunted series.
She’s been mesmerized by the extraordinary worlds within books for as long as she can remember. One evening an idea for a book formed and refused to leave until she wrote it. She jumped headfirst into the career that has called to her since she opened her first book. And there hasn’t been a single moment without a story begging to be told since.
The Vampire Debt The Vampire Curse The Vampire Court The Vampire Oath The Vampire Crown (March. 2022) The Vampire Betrayal (A prequel/origin bonus story. Release date: TBD)
This is a young adult reader but unlike some it is not a watered down plot. The author does not insult the intelligence of the reader. The book contains great vocabulary with wonderful context clues. The reader wants to know what will happen next. The twists and turns and romance add drama to this story. The characters are so well rounded for a YA.
The plot builds on the bits of revelation Nivian, the main character, finds out about herself and the mysterious man who comes into her life. She jumps to the conclusion that everyone was against her, but she was wrong because she didn’t communicate her feelings. It is a mistake many people make and that makes her believable.
The author has made the character’s complex, which makes predicting who those friends are very difficult and kept this reader interested. In the story. the main character feels alone and confused by those around her.
Young readers will be able to identify with Nivian’s struggle to discover who her friends really are and how to live her life after it was changed with a chance meeting.
This is a five star story. I look forward to reading more in this series and will recommend it to my friends with young readers.
My Review: I won The Reapers playing a game regarding author Ali Winters, where I had to answer three questions about her in order to win a copy of her book. Ali has been one of my Facebook friends for a little while and I was nearly able to answer all of the questions off the top of my head. So I did…for the win!
What I Loved: This is the first book I’ve read about Reapers (excluding On a Pale Horse, which I read in High School as part of a class, and is sort of in the same vein…great book btw!), though I know it’s not the only one out there, but first and foremost I loved being thrown into a world I never even thought to explore. Ali Winters has created a backdrop that is both interesting and easy to follow.
Her main character, Nivian, is very easy to like and while a little passive at times, she was also witty and smart. She was curious about the world that she didn’t actually belong to, and compassionate. She was exceptionally good at her job, but it wasn’t this ego chip resting on her shoulder. As her backstory begins to unfold in the book, her character becomes even more interesting.
The Reapers took a few left turns that kept me engaged with the story and wanting to know more. I’m a pretty big fan of the side characters making the story, and there were plenty of side-characters helping to create the shape of this book nicely. Camira and Silas were a couple of my favorites.
Not So Much: I kind of would have liked have seen a little bit more push pull play with the romantic interests in this book. I get that both Kane and Caspian are very much into Niv, however I feel that while she has feeling for both of the guys, it kind of just feels like physical attraction and surface deep so far. She is also played as innocent, but I kind of would think that given the way both of the guys act when they are around her – she would have some clue as to what is happening, and how she feels about it. I hope to see something with a little more foundation grow in the future.
I was also pretty surprised at Kane’s acceptance of the world he was thrown into. Perhaps it just didn’t seem like there was much “time” for him to accept the new reality, he kind of (metaphorically, not literally) shrugged and went with it. By the end he was even claiming loyalty ties. I think I probably would have been kicking and screaming and perhaps outright rejecting everything being thrown my way, despite evidence to the contrary. He didn’t even have a mild panic attack.
The Verdict: I believe fans of Paranormal/Fantasy will enjoy this book a lot. It’s YA, and appropriately labeled, as it is clean, with light romance that is on a constant simmer, however it is not the main purpose of this story. There are twist and turns that keep the reader engaged with the story.
I really liked this book. The story was different than a lot of others that I have read. This book is the first book in a series. It's can be catagorized as a YA Paranormal. It runs a little on the small side at 261 pages.
This book is the author's debut. And it was fabulous! The plot, the transitions, the dialogue and the action all came together to make the perfect storm. The action scenes were excellent in my opinion. The first book by an author is always fun because it sets the bar for anything that comes after it. And I have high hopes for this author. And did you see the cover? It's lovely. I generally don't pay attention to covers but this one really caught my eye. It seemed the overall theme of this book was fairness. Which I am secretly a huge believer in, so I dug it from the beginning.
Characters: Nivian: She seemed a little naive for an ancient reaper. But her senes of right and wrong are solid and commanding in this book. She may be oblivious of the mens affection for her, but she is no slouch when it came time to fight. Her personality was curious and she gave everyone the benefit of the doubt. A different take on most Mc's that I have read, which I enjoyed.
Kain: He was innocent and helpful. Always offering a hand when it is needed. He was quite humorous in his dealings with Nivi. He kinda just rolled with it. The Santa Claus conversation still lingers in my mind. You'll see.
Favorite quotes:
From the small amount of time she had studied him, he seemed to be fully awake, noticing things around him while the rest of the world seemed determined to walk forward through life with their heads down, rushing forward to imaginary goals like hamsters on a wheel, not ever seeing or doing anything.
"Look, I have to go, but I'll probably kill you tomorrow, Okay?" "Um, sure?" He knit his brows together. Whatever the proper response to something like that was, he didn't know.
I will be reading the next one. When it comes out.
I always tell myself that I'm not into Fantasy genre but whenever I hear something this good I instantly forget that thoughts. This book is so wonderful and if you are not into Fantasy like me *snorts* you would still definitely like this.. it's action packed for me and definitely a five star read.
The narration by Sarah Colton in my opinion gave this book a more pleasant appeal by her wonderful voice.
Totally enjoyable and entertaining.. a must read or listen!
Ali Winters just took my mind on an adventure I will never forget. The Reapers was an amazing journey of the life of a grim reaper. The loneliness, the heartache, and the friendship. This book was so unique and imaginative that I wanted to read as much as possible all the time. Although it took me a while to get through, that was my fault. I was busy, but still this book and the characters stayed in my mind.
I loved Nivian. She had such heart, such compassion, and I especially loved her naivety as she explored the life of a human.
I also really like Caspian, and although we found some things out that he did wrong in the past, he always did what he did out of love.
Kain was another interesting character as well, and while I didn't want to like him since Caspian had already weasled his way into my heart, I found I really did.
All in all, I absolutely adored this book. It might take me a while to dive into the next one, but as soon as I can, I am. Do yourself a favor and get this book today!
This is a great story. I can't wait to get started on the second book in the series (The Exodus). It focuses on a reaper that happens to notice a guy that can see her, which obviously isn't supposed to be possible. The characters in this novel are all fairly well developed, with elaborate backgrounds and interesting elements that tie them all together. This is the second book I'm reading right now that fixates on reapers of sorts...and I found it a very entertaining and well put together read.
Oh I do love a paranormal book and haven't read about a reaper for a long while. I really enjoyed this book and didn't read as quick as I would have as work got in the way. I'm just annoyed (at myself) because book 2 isn't out yet and usually I check before reading so I can read all in the series. Really good book.
The Reapers by Ali Winters is the first book in the Hunted Series. I listened to this book on audio narrated by Sarah Colton. Sarah did a great job narrating and I can't wait to hear future projects by her. This is the first book of Ali's that I have read and look forward to reading more of her books in the future.
The storyline really pulled me. I enjoyed the multiple points of view through out the book so I was able to get into all the characters head. The romance portion of the story was very subtle which is perfect for the YA Genre. Heads up the storyline does end on a cliffhanger. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys YA, Paranormal, or Fantasy books.
I love stories about reapers, I love all the different ways people see reapers roles and responsibilities. This book was very good, I like how Ali Winters had the reapers as not causing death and destruction but simply cutting the mortals life threads so they could move onto the next phase. I also enjoyed the reapers ability to only be seen by humans if they wanted to be. I love how Nivian challenged things when it no longer made any sense. I also enjoyed the build up of the relationship between her and Caspian and her and Kain. I definitely enjoyed this book and will be reading the rest of the series.
That was one heck of a ride! It was a little bit slow at first but when it picked up, it really picked up and didn’t stop. I loved all the characters. Especially Vivian. She was kind of a surprise. She was a reaper with a huge heart. I loved seeing her relationships grow.
This book kind of ended with things settled but absolutely not good. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
Wow! The imagination and twists and turns in this book had me on the edge of my seat! Winters knows how to create intriguing conflict and let it dangle long enough to steal your breath! I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series!
I loved this book because it enthralled me from the beginning. Kain and Nivian are attracted to each other even though they are on opposing sides. The story unfolds with uncertainty on both sides and Nivian and Kain being pulled by forces that they don't understand. I am going to buy the next book and continue to follow their story.
Yep, as the title implies, this story is about “the grim reaper”, the deliverer of the souls, death and all the gruesome connotations attached to it. Only in this book, there is more than one reaper who collects the human souls and they are not bad. And they are all about keeping the “balance”.
Or that’s what they say. Just ask their arch nemesis, the Hunters and they will tell you differently.
Nivian is a reaper. She’s good at her job, in fact may even be the best. She’s dedicated, always delivers, and completely devoted to her mission. Her only flaw is curiosity. And she is curious about the humans she reaps. She preferred to live among them when she’s not working, studying their way of life and taking pleasure in the small things that make these species different to her own world.
Then a human started paying a closer attention to her. Seeing her when he shouldn’t and managing to disrupt her work and doing the impossible. One man like a pebble amongst a bed of stones. But thrown in a pool of still waters could cause a resounding ripple.
Such an interesting read. Darkness against light. Who’s the good guy and who’s the bad? Was Nivian fighting for the right side? Who should she give her heart to?
Although I am not a fan of multi-POV in books, some authors manage to pull it off and use this way of retelling without making the story seem chaotic. Ali Winters gave us an almost 360 degrees view of this fantastical world and managed to keep the twist and turns exciting and kept me hanging to every word.
I would have liked a few more scenes between Nivian and Kain to see their relationship develop even more in this story. Some parts of the book could have been trimmed off to enable other parts to grow.
But all in all this was a good start to an intriguing series. The end didn’t feel like a cliff-hanger ending even though there is obviously a follow on story. Just excited to see where the author will take the next part to.
The Reapers is definitely different than anything I've read. I really enjoyed the mystery and discovery, learning who to trust, and what secrets there were to uncover. It was an exciting ride to be sure! I would absolutely pick up another of Ali Winter's works. She did a great job of revealing just enough at the right times, and keeping me hooked.
There are a few things that knocked it down for me though, one of which is inconsistency. For example, in one instance Nivian shivers and rubs her arms from the cold, and a few pages later Reapers are unaffected by temperature. Another place this inconsistency pops up is where powers are concerned, but I'll leave it at that! Another thing was the switches in POV, I understand what she was trying to do, but it was difficult to keep up with where we were and whose head we were in.
I also felt like the end was fairly rushed, especially with so much buildup to what was to come. There was a lot more potential there than what was used. Ali has a great story here, a really great foundation and idea, but I would like to see a lot more depth. Especially when it comes to understanding the powers, how they work, why the balance is so important, etc.
This could have easily been a five star book for me had those things I mentioned been taken into account. I know you can't please every reader. I get that. But, for me, these were the big issues. Another minor issue is that it really could use another look for editing issues, but that's not a huge deal as I didn't find it overly distracting or that it detracted anything from the read.
I'm going back and forth on whether I should give three or four stars here. On the one hand, I loved the concept and the characters and would love to read more in this series. On the other hand, it did fall short in all of the areas mentioned.
Can you protect someone even they are on the wrong side. Nivian is a reaper and she has been given a new mark which should be easy as she has done this tons of times. Nivian is the grim reaper she helps people along by taking their life energy into a pocket watch.
Her latest mark has taken a while as there is someone hanging around and she needs to know how he can see her.
Kain is just an ordinary young man that will go out of his way to help someone and this is about to give him lots of problems. Nivian follows him and he wants to know who she is.
Nivian has been told that Kain is her next mark as he is a hunter that kill her kind but she doesn't believe that. Can she go against everything that she knows to save him from death?
Nivian is about to find out something about her past that will make her question everything that she is. Who can she trust Kain or Caspian the one man that will do anything for her?
They are both thrown into a fight that only one can survive so who will and will it keep the balance of power safe?
A great read that mixes fantasy with the real world and it is really enjoyable.
The next one is going to be better as this left us wanting more for Nivian & Caspian or is that only me? I was lucky enough to get a copy in exchange for an honest review
I've been meaning to read this book for a while, but I've been burying in prior review agreements. In the past, I've read Stardust (which I loved) and the short Flirting with Death (Which I also loved), so I expected nothing but greatness from Ali Winters. While this is a good story, it isn't my favorite of hers. Which is says something about the author's work, since it's still good.
As YA/NA goes, I enjoyed this story. In the beginning, I felt it was a bit slow and the ending was too rushed. Having read all of Ali Winter's other released books I think I was a little disappointed in the pacing of the story. It's obvious she doesn't have any issue with this in the following books she has written. That being said, it didn't bug me much. I still liked the whole grim reaper plot, it's something I've only seen in her short. I just love the idea of it all. The characters were interesting and mysterious without being too much. I'm left wondering about what is to come in the next book, so I'm sure I'll grab it when it's released. I thought that this book would have the characters from the short in it. I'm hoping that they'll pop up again in the future as I really enjoyed them.
If you're a fan of paranormal with a touch of romance, you'll probably enjoy this book. Heck, I'm sure you would enjoy all of Ali Winter's books. Go check them out!
I absolutely love reaper stories! I especially love them when they are written exceptionally well, and given a very fresh and exciting take. Winters has done this fantastically, to the point that I could not put the book down. I honestly had to read every single page, in one sitting. Shh, don't tell the hubby.
I loved the two main characters, in this book. It felt as though they wre created very well and truly filled out the positions of who they were and who they were about to become. I loved that the reaper wasn't all bones and darkness. Don't get me wrong, I kill for those, but I truly enjoyed having a new look at death and how they were doing business.
The pace was done very well. It was exciting and really drew me in, from the start. I liked that there was a romance brewing, but it was more about the thrill of a new romance and the excitement of meeting someone you were drawn to...and maybe someone you shouldn't have.
The storyline is fab. It is unique, exciting and carried out very well. Ali has filled the pages with detail to really make you feel as though you are there, a part of the story. You become hooked and truly invested in what is happening.
Overall, this is an excellent read. I highly highly recommend giving it a go!
**I received this book for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion.
This is a fast-paced and enjoyable Young Adult Paranormal, with a splash of Romance in the shape of a love triangle (sort of) thrown in.
Nivian has been doing her job for years with no problems when she suddenly starts noticing a man there each time. What is worse is that he seems to notice her too, which should be impossible. Then Reapers start disappearing, and the common link is that man that Nivian keeps seeing. Following conversations with Caspian (her boss... sort of) she finds out just who and what he is. Things are not always black and white though, and both Kain and Nivian have choices to make.
There were parts to this story that I absolutely loved, and parts not so much. I am not a fan of the triangle, even a version like this one. It builds up to a climactic ending where you will need to keep your wits about you as you move swiftly from one scene to another.
If you want a clean Paranormal that has a brilliant take on reapers, old man time, scythes, etc, then I can recommend this.

Merissa Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books! Feb 15, 2016
I enjoyed this story very much. The storyline is very interesting and offers a new idea to me on how deaths are handled in the universe. There are plenty of twists in the story that keep it exciting.
Nivian is an intriguing character. She is a Reaper whose job it is to set up the deaths when the person is supposed to die and reclaim their energy to keep the world in balance. She is different from the others in that she enjoys living as a human when not working. Something strange is going on with Reapers and she is thrown in the middle. Her loyalty is divided when a human named Kain is marked for reaping but Nivian feels it is not his time. It brings about many revelations that surprise her and change her life. I am looking forward to the next book.
This was a great story with a unique twist to it. The characters were phenomenal. I loved Nivian. She was a fun and intriguing character that made the story worth reading. The story-line, which I thought was a bit drawn out at times, turned out to be really good in the end. Even though, I may have thought the story was a bit long, I still highly recommend this story, because this is just my opinion. I am also very anxious to see where this author goes with these characters. I give this book a four book review.
The author provided me with a digital ARC copy of the book for review purposes only. No remuneration was exchanged.

"Did you just make a Big Bad wolf reference? It doesn't matter she continued I can go anywere at any time You won't be hard to track down" "I..." "Look I have to go but I'll probably kill U tomorrow okay?" "Um sure?"

This is a refreshing and fantastic take on death. Full of twists and turns that keep you hanging on to the bitter end with a well written plot full of outstanding and jaw dropping revelations. The author's world building is fantabulous and the characters are very likeable and strong and this book cover is simply beautiful. I cannot wait to see what happens next.
I love PNR and truly enjoyed this original storyline and its fresh new twists. This was my first reaper storyline and I found it quite entertaining. I can't wait to read more!
The narration was fantastic. Sarah Colton gave a great performance, adding feeling and depth to each character. I was very pleased and would love to listen to more by her.
Overall, I thought this was a great NA read and would gladly recommend it to other PNR fans.
I was glad I came across this book. My PR lady recommended it to me. First off, the cover grabbed me. It is stunning! And as soon as I read it was about reapers I was totally in. This book as everything YA paranormal lovers want in a book and more. I cannot wait for book 2! I definitely recommend this.
I received this book for free. I am voluntarily leaving this review and all opinions expressed herein are mine.
This is the first book in The Hunted series. It is a standalone story with no cliffhanger ending. It does set up what will likely be the next story in the series.
Here, Nivian is a reaper and very good at her job. She has no qualms cutting the life thread of a human and sending them to the afterlife. Humans cannot see her, except when she wants them to, yet one day - a human - Kain - looks right at her and she is sure that he can see her. She reports this even and told that the human likely looked in her direction or past her and she only believed he saw her. Nivian starts to follow Kane - and believes more and more that he can see her. Then she is given her next assignment and just three days to complete it - her assignment is Kane. Yet, she is reluctant to complete it without knowing who Kain is and how he can see her. Once she learns Kain's true identity, will she be able to complete her assignment?
This is a unique twist on reaper stories with great world building. It grabs you from the beginning and builds on that intrigue as you learn about Nivian and Kain and how they fit into the world. I really enjoyed Nivian's humorous adventures amongst the humans - eating fries, doing laundry. This a complex plot and just when you think you've got it figured out and who to trust - curveball and you're back to questioning [just like Nivian] what is true and who to trust.
I listened to this book - the narrator was excellent. She was able to distinguish between the various characters, kept a good pace and certainly enhanced my enjoyment of this book.
My Summary: Nivian is one of the best reapers in existence. She finishes her marks in a fraction of the time it takes the others and is one of the most trusted and higher ranking. But when reapers begin to go missing in the presence of her new mark, she begins to question everything she thinks she knows and the limits of her powers become uncertain.
My Rating: 5/5
My Review: The Reapers is rich in backstory and well-developed characters. I could almost see Nivian, Caspian, Kain, and even Silas. Each character had its own personality and way of reacting and moving. It didn't take much effort for my imagination to go to work developing out the scenes on the pages. The interactions between the characters were realistic and I could almost feel the emotion conveyed.
I liked that the romance didn't completely overshadow the main plot and wasn't the main focus of the story. The characters were mature and acted their age. The ones who were ancient didn't act like teenagers, and this didn't feel like a cliched young-adult novel in any way. The characters didn't have to act out to show their personalities. Ali Winters revealed their emotions by what they didn't say and I consider that a success.
There is telling every now and then, but it's so little that I felt like I was right in the moment with the characters—the majority of it is showing. I normally don't like POV jumps between the different characters but Ali does it so well that it's a smooth transition each time. The Reapers is a fast-paced novel full of action and plot twists that keep you guessing until the very end. I cannot wait for the next book in the series and hope to read it soon. Good job.
The Reapers is definitely different than anything I've listen to. I really enjoyed the mystery and discovery, learning who to trust, and what secrets there were to uncover. It was an exciting ride to be sure! I would absolutely pick up another of Ali Winter's works. She did a great job of revealing just enough at the right times, and keeping me hooked.
