Now that Alec and Eleira have learned how to use the Greater Elements, they must take the Royal Academy's entrance examination. What awaits them there is something neither could have anticipated.More magic, more friends, and more danger. This coming-of-age fantasy saga features incremental magic and skill progression, light romance elements, and a heavy magic setting.
The second is as good as the first and even better in some aspects. There are some new friends made and some secrets come to light. I can't wait to see what happens next.
Damn ,it was a very good book ,the series is one hell of a ride so far ,full of action and adventure. So look forward to reading more from the author in the future 😀
Where the last book was 3.5 stars rounded up, this one is 3.5 stars rounded down. Both books are a very similar quality, however, where the simplicity of the last book lent to its charm, here that charm was missing.
I think the reason for this is that after the last book I was looking for more depth of character, worldbuilding, and ultimately more detail overall. However, what we received was another book that was a little too fast paced and glossed over too many details. In short, it was very surface level storytelling.
This lack of depth is starting to make this story feel hollow and I felt a few times in this book as though I was reading a list of events and described emotions rather than an engaging story.
There is still plenty of potential here in this series, and overall I'm enjoying my time listening to these audiobooks. They are easy reading fun and I will definitely be reading the next book. However, I have my fingers crossed that this story gets a little bit deeper in all elements so that I can raise the star level on the next instalment.
Made it halfway but could not keep going, the main character turned into a idiot ,every one manipulated him into doing whatever they wanted!! The writer of course made it that way so he or she is to blame for this bad book!!
A Lot to Like, But Moved to Fast Alec and Eleira are ready to enter mage school, thats cool. In the first book, Alec had to work and suffer a fair bit before getting some payoff, although he did get a lot of cool things in very short order. Now things just accelerate.
Eleira gets a very cool dragon familiar, after she hides below deck throughout an entire combat. Why is the dragon rewarding cowardice?
On multiple occasions Alec gets rewarded by his mentors with new toys, despite directly contradicting their advice or instruction. Alec treats his familiar poorly, recognizes that, but never really fixes it. Alec's first real wizardly combat since leaving the preparations on Uriel's estate and joining the school is with a legendary evil creature.
Jolenta and Vodalus develop as more central characters.
After the team defeats big bad monsters, Eleira does retrieve the jewel only a Leafwalker clan elf could retrieve without dying, (after Alec triggers the death trap but manages to resist its sure death).
It seems like the book is just in too much of a rush to progress the characters. And it is very repetitive (wasteful?) in harping on a few other students who are "overly dramatic" and have an odd relationship. In summary the story is fun, but the progression just doesn't make sense.
I feel the author has no appreciation of the age of his characters. The MC is supposably 18 years old but constantly AND I MEAN constantly acts like he's 12. It get's terribly annoying. The academy sounds like an institution for grade schoolers and not at all like a college/university that a person might reasonably expect. His emotions are childish, immature, and not reflective at all of a young man that grew up in the tough environment of the orphanage/monastery.
The magic system seems to be created on a whim and developed as haphazardly. Assume you were suddenly a mage ... what would you do? I promise you that it wouldn't be what the MC does.
ANYWAY, as a YA book ... this is okay ... I guess.
Oh, and the other annoying attribute of these books (not limited to just this author) is the constant repetitive nature of SO MANY story attributes.
“This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”
I am not going to share my reasoning, thoughts on the book, or any opinions that would influence your decision to read it. I am simply saying that I liked it. I would like you to read it and make your own decision. After all, you are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.
I will happily discuss the book with you on Goodreads if you are so inclined. As always, I am open to debates and arguments, but also vain enough to seek acknowledgement, so feel free to roast me or applaud my efforts. Either is acceptable, because if you are paying attention to me then you are at least considering the book. And THAT my friends is exactly why you see my comments here.
Alec and Eleria join the academy and their first semester doesn't go quietly. Alec has to hide the fact that his magic is different from everyone else's and try to learn to fit in without drawing attention to himself... no chance of that happening! Eleria is given the task of finding and stealing a jewel and with the help of Alec and a couple of new friends does just that. I'm totally in love with Elira's familiar... a dragon. Its got to be worth reading just for that...
The storyline is short in the second book taking place really in just few days or maybe weeks? Its hard to tell, it's a young adult book so I'm not expecting an epic, but the characters and premise are good, it just never really grabs you!! So reasoning seems off on how the MC acts... It's an ok YA novel that reads easy...best I can say.
3.5 for this one. I found the school stuff too juvenile for me (being far past high school or even uni at this point in my life), and the "will they/won't they" of the main couple got tiresome. We did get some plot movement, but it was a bit tedious getting there.
At time of writing I'm determining if I care enough to keep going with the series; that remains to be seen.
I enjoyed this book even more than the first one! Alex has to try to hide his natural magic, and learn to use it at the same time. He is able to learn that how he has so far handled his familiar is not the best way to do it. Definitely an entertaining story, and I look forward to the next book!
A good addition to an interesting series. The characters that we grew to love in the first novel have returned and have become more in-depth. Fun, romance, and massive spells await you in this wonderful read.
It wasn't as good as the first book in that it didn't always hold my interest but it was not a bad book just lacking in something I can't describe which means that I am probably wrong. I will be getting book three
...but is Alec EVER going to stop being an emotional coward? Action and a bit of mystery keep this story going. Hopefully, characters will continue to develop.
A fresh story from DBKing. 2nd book. Interested to see where it goes from here. Several things won’t make sense without reading book 1, so read that first. Do people really jump into a series midway?
I am not sold on the framework supporting magic but that seems to be a key lynchpin of the story. I will be interested in seeing wear the author goes with it.
I really like the plot line in this series but the books could be so much more. The action and progression are too rush and should be developed a bit more.
I never can understand how some people have a great gift in storytelling! It is like they have placed a spell on you and you cannot stop reading! Thanks
Good YA adventure, plenty of magic, interesting characters. Liked the way the” familiars” were brought into the story. Looking forward to the next book.
