One who is twice woven, cannot remain your own. Two the ether bound, who shines the torch in darkness. Three the blessed harbinger who reaps the reaper’s heart.
Nearly a century has passed since Hades and Persephone’s children were foretold, but their efforts to conceive have been in vain. A secret rite on Samothrace conducted by the gifted hymnist, Orpheus, might finally bend the will of the Fates and give the King and Queen of the Underworld everything they have ever dreamed of, or pave a path of unimaginable suffering.
Hades and Persephone’s sway over the mortals has only grown, drawing the covetous attention of the Olympian gods. When a hastily made oath, a silver lyre, and the returning restless dead put the gods below at odds with Olympus, it could shatter the peace that has existed between the realms since the Titanomachy.
The Good Counselor continues the erotic Underworld romance that began with Rachel Alexander’s highly-acclaimed novel, Receiver of Many.
Rachel Alexander has been a resident of California all her life and finished her first novel at age 16. She co-wrote a play that won awards from Bill Moyers of PBS and the University of Southern California. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and Literary Criticism with an emphasis on creative writing.
When not writing, Rachel can often be found sewing corsets, overstocking her spice cabinet, and petting chickens. She is married and lives in Half Moon Bay, CA with her wonderful husband/editor and their son, William.
I normally don't write reviews, but for this book and this series I had to. This book was EVERYTHING I had been waiting for. The amount of different emotions this book put me through, I don't even know what I'm going to do now! Aidon and Persephone are amazing as always in their relationship, but I liked how this book opened up the world in mythology more and introduced us to more characters. I can't wait to read the next book, it feels like it'll just keep getting better and better.
A powerful, heart wrenching story of love, loss and inescapable fate.
I have known from before I even opened this book that it would be a wild, unpredicted ride and still it managed to find me unprepared.
The good counselor is a book whose main theme is loss and what that aching, gaping feeling does to everyone who experiences it. It wears different disguises with different people and its aftermath is a dangerous minefield ready to blow in your face in the worst possible moments. Gods, like humans, feel this emotion deeply and powerfully enough to risk the very balance of the universe.
In this 3rd book, Aidon (Hades) and Persephone’s marriage is the strongest it's ever been, the very soil from which life on earth thrives from, but despite the many reaches the King and Queen of the Underworld have they want something they were told (more or less) they could never get: a child. They tempt the wrath of powerful Olympian gods when a fertility rite led by Orpheus gets them so close to what they want.
There was a LOT of anger burning hot in my gut while reading everything unfold, a clenched-jaw quietness before everything broke loose. When Persephone said something along the lines of ‘nothing bad is going to happen’ I literally yelled at my kindle for her to shut the fuck up and not tempt the fates.
The tension was palpable from the very first page to the climax, keeping me in a nail-biting mindset that made me honestly afraid that Hades and Persephone could not recover from this horrific situation. For more than half of the book I was repeating my please let them be okay mantra.
While the first half of the book was a deadly avalanche building momentum, the second half of the book dealt with its aftershock. It was painful to read about these two main characters I love so much to deal with such complex suffering, but I really appreciated that they were deeply changed by the events (not only personally, but their entire philosophy and marriage).
My few qualms with this story:
a) the large new cast - they took A LOT of page time and although I understand WHY they needed to be there, my brain was close to frying itself. It’s Hades and Persephone’s story but it’s also Orpheus and Eurydice’s and a little bit of Zeus with Hera and let’s not forget fuckface Apollo and Hermes and of course Demeter with her loverboi and Zeus with his mistress…like I get it, it’s interesting but ultimately too much.
b) the conflict resolve - this one hurt in both Destroyer of Light and here. I dunno man, I was out for blood. When Athena had her girlboss speech I was so hyped up and ready to get that sweet, sweet revenge and then…nothing. I mean nothing *I* wanted. Like, I get it - the world would have literally ended if my wish was put in action, but I felt like the story didn’t offer me the possibility to bleed out all that accumulated throughout the story. I think it’s a missed opportunity to offer the reader - me, me, meee - some well-earned relief.
That said, I still love this story to bits. I’ve been waiting for this book for a year and it did not disappoint. I don't know what Rachel Alexander puts in her books but I am unable to stop once I start - not to mention that my hands are shaking at the end of each and every book. Talk about emotional rollercoaster!
It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out the first bit of the blurb is about the children and when I tell you I got all squeaky when I figured out the future Makaria & Thanatos ship, I’m not kidding. After everything he went through in Destroyer of Light and the changes since then… I’m so ready to see it unfold, my boy deserves to be happy with a girl who sees him and not as toxic as Eris.
But to the book. It was so so so good. I loved this series before, but you can tell there is serious improvement in this book, both in quality (more focused on POV, more balanced in plot, etc) and how it all expanded to a big Greek drama.
All the complaints that some people seemed to have with the first books that it was like fanfiction (which is, surprise, it was originally. and to be fair every retelling in any topic is fanfiction to some extent, so go home) didn't exist here. It was really well written, well researched and put together in such a unique, interesting and entertaining way that it was hard to put this book down.
These days there's an influx of baby plots and dealing with miscarriage in books, but most of them don't even come close to touch my strings. Not this book though. What they went through in the second half of the book had me so heartbroken and sad for H&P. They fought so long to have a family and it was heartbreaking to see it ripped away from them. But their love proved stronger and gave them another chance and I just can't wait to see the girls' journey as they grow up and embrace their roles in the cosmos. I'm so excited for Makaria and Thanatos and Melinoe becoming the chaotic beauty.
The best book in this series yet! Absolutely adored all the eastereggs pointing towards different myths! You can also learn mythology from this book which is amazing although the line between real myth and retelling is blurry at times. Loved all about this book and devoured it in 3 days straight.
Easy 5/5, more like 10/5! a million stars!! I give up my life to this book and this whole series!! I want to live in the joy these books give me for the rest of my life.
I was lucky enough to get my copy a month early and have been biting my tongue this whole time, but now I can gush!
The third installment in an incredible series, The Good Counselor picks up several decades after Destroyer of Light, and proceeds to delve even deeper into the lore and myths we all know and love. Rachel Alexander proves time and again to be a master weaver when it comes to picking the threads of Greek mythology and intertwining it into a tapestry of a fulfilling story with the gods and goddesses. The time and dedication they put into research and details is only a part of what makes this series worth the read.
The promise of Hades and Persephone spice is most likely what draws a lot of people in at first, but we all stay for the well-developed relationships, the drama, and to see Persephone and Hades grow into their destinies as rulers of the Underworld. One of the best parts of it all is the petty politics of the gods, all the more illuminated with the POV of the Olympians.
As a big Greek mythology nerd that has been obsessed since middle school, knowing about the myths brought to light in this book had me stressed over and over again! No spoilers, but this book sometimes speared my heart over and over, but then kissed it better. The way old tales were retold here, how things came to be (sorry, I have to be vague!), just had me gripping The Good Counselor tighter and tighter with every turn of the page.
I was lucky enough to get this book a month before it’s release date, so I will be VERY vague and brief in this review so there’s zero chance of spoilers.
I love this series the most of any books I have ever read, and this book did NOT disappoint. It ripped my heart out, broke my soul, then put me back together again. Rachel is an incredible author, and her characters and interpretations of the myths and gods/goddesses is spectacular. If you have read the first two, BUY THIS ONE NOW. If you haven’t, go buy the first two then come back for this one. There isn’t a star rating high enough for this series ♥️
Sometimes… the book content is just not for the reader. I liked the previous ones in this series (when I read them many years ago) but as a uterus owner who has absolutely no interest in children and is admittedly pretty repulsed by the mere thought of it and can’t relate to the emotional struggles… this book being pretty much exclusively about fertility struggles, pregnancy, miscarriages, grief, marriage problems, etc etc… not my cup of tea. I understand why it was written but I am DEFINITELY not the intended audience.
Also, I have a particular ick about a certain masturbation scene in this because it’s so often an abuse/guilt tactic and I don’t think it was adequately handled/talked about afterwards. Never thought I’d be so put off by Hades but yeah. It was gross.
So I don’t know. I can’t say I enjoyed this book. Trying not to be very harsh about it either, but I don’t really know what else to say. Simply not for me on many, many levels. Not sure if I will continue this series after this one (assuming the author does write more)
GODDAMN I am unwell. This is such a good series, the world building is phenomenal compared to other Greek myth retellings. Like astronomically different. This entire book had me picking up my kindle every chance I had. I was literally loosing sleep over it. Sometimes I think I may read too many hades/Persephone Greek retellings because the stories start to mesh together but this series stands out. Again, it ACTUALLY has plot, and a fantastic one. I love how the author brings in other myths and I liked how much we got to hear from other characters!! The book may seem long but the pacing is absolutely chef's kiss because you don't even notice it. PLEASE tell me there is another one coming for us ??
Omg this book was just amazing! I loved it even more than the first two. I was absolutely blown away by this book. It was so brilliantly written. I can’t even find the words to express how much I enjoyed this book. I also loved the interactions between the various gods and goddesses. There were so many amazing scenes! Absolutely blown away!

This was an amazing continuation of my favorite story. The growth you see in both Hades and Persephone as individuals as well as a couple is so refreshing and real. Also, Hera, Apollo, and others in the book still maintain their mythologically accurate traits. Overall, I’m so happy I preordered this.
This trilogy is beautifully written & extremely well researched. This story brought tears to my eyes & made my heart swell. This third installment introduces Orpheus & the devastation of miscarriage & trials of pregnancy. We get to see the Gods struggle at a level humans are all too familiar with & it is both heartbreaking & satisfying. I highly recommend this series to any lover of Greek Mythology. It will be a series I read over & over again! Check TW’s 18+ MA for adult themes
A masterpiece in how to pick up and weave Greek mythology and create an interesting and fulfilling story of the Gods, Goddesses and Titans
I came for the Hades x Persephone spice and stayed for the absolute dedication to the research that has been put into this series, well developed relationships, drama and to see H&P grow in their relationship and their destiny
K but this ending was legit the best. I loved this ending. The only reason why I gave it four instead of five is some of the language in the beginning of the book was cringey and I found myself with second hand embarrassment because of what characters said to each other 😂
Best book out of the trilogy. Usually Hades and Persephone books are about how they meet and end up together and that’s it, not what happens after. These books describe their relationship with more depth and what they go through together.
If you don't mind excessive eroticism, you should enjoy the latest chapter in the saga of Persephone and Hades, their marital life, and how it contrasts with the Olympians. However, one thing is lacking to make their marital bliss complete. You guessed it--a child of their own! Will they be successful in attaining their dream? Or will their hopes be dashed--perhaps by an evil influence?
This book had me in tears of happiness and distraught. Rachel Alexander has done it again with a fabulous retelling of another mythology from ancient Greece. Filled with everything you could ask for - romance, angst, drama, fantasy, erotica, great characters, and more. This book, along with its previous two sisters, deserve to be recognized everywhere for being one of the best fiction, fantasy, and erotic series. Please check out Receiver of Many and Destroyer of Light so you can enjoy the latest in Hades and Persephone's story. TW: This series is an erotic story and filled with many mature themes, so 18+ only. Read at your own caution.
This 3rd book was so good! Full of pain but it was worth it. H&P relationship is tested in this one and it was good to see them find their way to each other. The Olympians schemes reach to height of evilness and some of them got a little taste of what they rightfully deserved. Team chtonia is awesome as ever and now we have new players entering the game with the next generation. Can't wait to see how it will play out but i trust RA to continue to weave her story as beautifully as ever!
I don't have enough words to gush about this book!!! I ADORE this series!!! I LOVE how Rachel writes everything so perfectly. The feels are just ❤❤❤❤. I hate that I've read it so fast. I just can't seem to pace myself with these books😁😁. I just want this semester to be over so I can do a thorough reread. I've read many retellings of the Hades/Persephone myth but Rachel Alexander's is just THE ABSOLUTE BEST!!! Thank you so much for writing so awesomely and sharing your work, Rachel!!! You are one of my favorite authors!!!❤❤❤
Rachel Alexander has done it again. A fantastic story filled with mythos and a well-cast of characters that leave you wanting more. I laughed and cried and felt the emotions the characters themselves went through. It takes true talent for an author to balance so many characters and myths and include foreshadowing of all the things to come. I loved that the tonal quality of the work stayed the same and the ending scene had me gasping. Absolutely fantastic. Well done, Rachel. X
This series is so underrated! I love how well researched this whole retelling is. Rachel takes the classic mythology and weaves a coherent and compelling story. Its spicey, romantic, there's drama and betrayal. I devoured this book and went through an emotional rollercoaster along the way. Checks every single box!
