This is the fifth book in the series, and just like the other ones, it’s unique in its own right. We are thrown right in the thick of things with Veronica ruling, but she needs to get back to stop Thane from ascending. What follows is a pulse-pounding thriller with lots of action, adventure, and secrets coming to light. We meet Kit’s mother, and that was a scene for a couple of reasons. Not only that, some strings are tied up, and there are others that come in to play. This series is just so much fun to read, and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Blood Trials
So glad to have Thane and Kit back 🙌 definitely missed them in the last book and our girl finally got golden rod 😉🤣
After being crowned Veronica just wants one thing to make it back to Thane when she literally storms his ascension ceremony and shows her mate mark it only leaves them with 2 options find a stone called the dragon stone which grants life or watch Thane face his final death. Never one to give up Veronica is determined to find the stone and save her soul mates life. After the trail of breadcrumbs leads them to Rome they find themselves in front of the vampire king and queen over there next thing u know without actually meaning to they find they actually hold the stone but refuse to give it to V. Subsequently she persuades them to let her enter their blood trials to fight for it a comp strictly for Vamps. The worse Thanes condition gets the more desperate Veronica gets to save him but enemies still lurk in the shadows and they use the trials to strike V when she's distracted if she loses the trials it's only her soul on the line which will belong to the them through a blood contract no biggie kill a heap of Vampires and save her mate. Simple right 🤣

I enjoyed the way everything from the previous books in this series comes together. Really love the additude of Veronica's body guards. They sure give her mouthy responses when she keeps taking extreme chances. Narrator does a very good job with the various characters voices and the entire storyline.

„Wings of Life“ is the fifth installment in Stephanie Mirro’s supernatural urban fantasy seven book series “The Last Phoenix”, which follows Veronica Neill fate as a very special kind of phoenix, an avian shifter (Falcon) working in which she would describe as ‘acquisition and recovery of magical artifacts’, only her enemies would dare to call her a thief, with the pertinent consequences 😉. But being a thief is the last of her past problems, let us say Veronica’s life since her ‘easy days as mere thief’ has become very ‘interesting’, while handling and sorting almost every sort of ‘problems’: vampires, necromancers, even Fae.
After her hard-fought success fighting Galina to get the kingdom back, now Veronica stays in from of the broken remains after Galina’s reign of horrors. But as needed as she might be on the Fae-lands, Veronica is even more needed back in Miami, where she manages to arrive just before Thane can fulfill his angelic ascension, right on time to find the dragon’s mystical item that can protect Thane from dying for good while he attempts to ascend.
This series storyline is captivating, and keeps improving by any single book. If you think the Fae were the epitome of ‘hard-work’, wait ‘till you go looking for the Dragons, dodging vampires on the process, because, yes, it must always be vampires 😉 and not exactly your sparkling garden-variety 😊.
Stephanie Mirro’s original blend of history, mythical lore, fast-paced action, and good developed characters thrown in the middle of unexpected situations flows into the story and makes this new series already a must for fans of good-written intelligently constructed UF with a taste for snarky comments, witty humor, a whole menagerie of paranormals and some very sexy guys (both ethereal and tangible 😊) on the side.

Loved this book
This book was fantastic! The whole series has had a fresh take on almost every supernatural creature in this world. After all the hits and misses from the last 4 books, V finally sees the light at the end of the tunnel of a life with Thane. A plus of this book is that V finally gets to find out what the mysterious vampire blood trials are. In usual Veronica fashion, she proves to be as excited as she is nervous due to what she is fighting for. Also, V gets to demonstrate her advanced butt kicking abilities she honed while in Mirognya.

This book is even better than the last one! I was not expecting that. This picks up seamlessly from the previous book and pulls you in for a Great Ride. I am really looking forward to book 6, because I need more of this great series. I Loved It! No Spoilers here!

The fifth book in the series could be standalone, but the third, fourth, and fifth stories feel like kind of a trilogy within the larger series, so for continuity, I think at least those two should be ready prior to this one.
It was fun to see familiar faces again when Veronica returns home. The last book was all about Phoenix culture, and in this book there's a ton of vampire world building. This story has a lot of fight scenes as well — nothing overly gross — action, surprises, and adventure. There was steam in this book, although Veronica didn't deserve it! At least, not as fast as she got sexy times. More on that below.
Joanna Roddy performed the story, once again channeling Veronica perfectly.
Possible spoilers ahead:
My disappointment in one aspect of Veronica continued from the last book. It's hard for me to buy into her actually feeling like Thane is her soulmate or the love of her life when she was so easily able to dismiss any thought of him and jump all over Peter for sex in the last book. I mean...if things were reversed, and Thane had tried to sleep with another woman, how would Veronica feel?
There was a chance Thane was dead, and she didn't feel grief or mourn him at all. Now she returns to her world, and suddenly she's all about Thane? That just feels like she will take whichever man is conveniently around. So, Thane's pretty much "I searched for you every day and put off my chance for ascension!" And she's all "I waited two days before I moved on and tried to have sex with someone else!" Poor Thane! He deserves better.
In my opinion, and that's all this is, Veronica should have had to work a whole lot harder to get Thane back. I know she went through a lot in the story to save him, but she should have had to do that before he took her back, and she should have fessed up. That way what she does could have redeemed her for her poor sexy times choice.
I really did enjoy the story! I just think there was a chance for her character to grow and realize she really does love Thane, but it was missed, since all she did was show up to get the guy.

Oh, Veronica, I love you but you are so darn impulsive!
Picking up where the last book left off, Veronica is getting used to her new role...and all the fun things that go with it.
I enjoyed the twists and turns in the story and the growth of the world that the author created here. Veronica both grows and stays true to herself in this story, though there are some moments where I do wish people would stop her before she makes an impulsive decision with potentially dire consequences.
Mirro does an excellent job with writing all the fight scenes and there are a bunch of them in this story.

I loved the story! Veronica and Thane are finally reunited, but he is in danger and she needs to find a certain artifact to help. Unfortunately, it snowballs... and in the search for said artifact she ends up doing A LOT more than expected. But the action was amazing and very entertaining. Now I'm torn because I want to know what happens next (the series is completed), but I have gotten used to "Veronica's" voice (Joanna Rody, the narrator) so I am torn whether to wait for the audiobook or binge-read the rest of the series...

Why is it every time V tries to do something that should be harmless it turns into something so very bad.
Trying to obtain the dragon stone from the vampires, she ends up making a blood oath to bring Kit to see her mother…in person.
She has to make the vampires let her participate in the Blood Trials.
She has to not only win but get back to Thane in time to keep him from dying.
What else can she have happen? Oh, that’s right. Let’s have some scum sack wake the dragons.

Veronica is working hard to get her kingdom back to the way it should be. However, her heart still belongs to Thane. She doesn’t know if he’s received his wings yet, but she knows she must return soon. She arrives just in time to stop his ascent, but now she faces a new threat. Thane will die soon if they don’t find a dragon stone. The only issue is no one is even sure if such an item exists. However, we all know Veronica knows no bounds when it comes to her friends and those she loves.

Great series
I’m not sure how the author holds my attention with each new book but she does! Make peace with death and chaos following our heroine. I’ve read 5 books and eagerly look forward to the 6th. I adore strong female characters and of course a romance with a HEA!

ITS ABOUT TIME!!! After book 5 the slow burns turns into a good show! Not a smut show but a good love story lovin’. A much needed one for both thane and V! Golly I’m soooo invested in these books! I love this series so far and sooo upset it’s almost over!

I'm glad I stuck with the series. It was worth it. Books are slow going at first probably could have been cut down some but I like the characters and the narrator does a great job.

Finally I get Thane back and just in the nick of time. Though there are, of course, twists and turns that make it more interesting/challenging for the characters. But seriously, Thane!
