Horrors of the Night is a collection of short Mysterious, Psychological, Suspense, and Horror stories that will make you shiver and sleep with your lights on. Some of the stories are inspired by true events and some are inspired by ideas of my dear readers! Find out which ones inside this scary collection.
"BABYSITTER" Rachel was just a regular teenager living a normal life, when the new, rich family moved into town. They had 2 children and were looking for a babysitter. She thought it would be a nice way to get some money. What was in store for her, however, was a bloody and shocking night to remember. "DARK SIDE" Selene and Damien seemed like a normal couple, but Damien started to act weirdly and spent a lot of time in his price room where he did his job. Damien was an artist and needed his private area. What was Damien actually doing in his private room was more terrifying than Selene could ever have imagined.
"THE CURSE OF HERNANDEZ" A newly married couple found the perfect home to call their own. While cleaning out the upstairs attic the husband discovers an old suitcase. Upon opening, they find the remains of documents and papers with their last name on them- Hernandez. Strange, but they decided to ignore it and throw the suitcase away. They should have never done this because that is when strange things started to happen.
I really like anthologies and always give them a chance. This one consist of 2 1/2 stories, which bothered me, because nowhere in the blurb or "about" section does it mention that you get 1/2 a story. It's sad to think that an author has to resort to such tactics to get his books read. It's one thing to know I am reading 1 book in a series, it's another to deceive readers about it. Make no mistake, not telling readers is the same as lying about it, readers have expectations. The first 2 stories "Babysitter" and "Darkside" are pretty decent stories, but they took too long (for short stories) to get to the "BANG" so it is easy to see it coming (in both stories) thus decreasing the "horror" effect. The final 1/2 story is a standard ghost story and not a haunted house story, even at only half a story it is easy to see where it is going, although not how it will end. Unfortunately the story is nothing special and nothing about it urges me to get or read the next book, which by the way is 5 printed books in. If this is any example of the other 4 books, I can only say that there is apparently a market for lackluster writing. My 2 stars go to the the illustrator of the jacket cover, nice work.
I am always loathe to give scathing reviews that are brutal and don’t have any positive takeaways but my goodness… that is time in my life I will never get back and I can safely say that my junior high students could write a collection of stories with more intrigue, and definitely with less spelling and grammatical errors. Woeful!
Got it on Kindle for free along with the next two books for a total of £1.50. Immediately returned the second and third after finishing it. I think that just about says it all.
To be more specific: unrealistic attitudes, simple and repetitive writing, the stories aren’t that interesting or scary and the third story isn’t even complete (to make you buy the next one). So technically there are only two stories (and a half).
Here are some extracts that annoyed me (for good reason or for bad idk): As their tongues canoodled, she reflected on how great it was to have the love of your life next to you.
Carlos was a paranoid person—one had to be to survive the drugs and death-ridden childhood under which he had grown—but he was not superstitious.
Then a few pages later…
He'd grown up in an environment where paranoia was encouraged
Okay we get it thank you, either give details about his past or move on.
She flashbacked once more to her memories of that day.
Is that even a word?
He had been given a tour of the building by Greg, the assistant manager, which was funny because the assistant manager of where he used to work had also been named Greg.
NO WAY THAT’S SO FUNNY OMG TWO GREGS 😐😐😐😐😐 Even if it’s an important detail in the story (which I wouldn't know because tHE STORY ISN’T EVEN FINISHED), the way this is written sounds so stupid.
It took me less than an hour to read and yet I still felt like I wasted my time.
Two short stories and one continued story. Each story is will written with different interesting well developed characters lots of action, twist, turns, and misdirection leading to each conclusion. I would recommend this series and author to 👍 readers of horror haunting fantasy novels 👍🔰. 2023 👒😀💘🏡
"what the hell was wrong with the world? What other mysteries and diabolical happenings lurked in the dark crevices of society? What was the dark side?"
I managed to snag this book during stuff your kindle day this year. I wasn't sure what to expect but the ominous cover immediately drew me in.
Story one was the perfect way to set the tone of the book. When a teenage girl takes on a job to babysit for some extra cash, she quickly realizes that she may have bitten off more than she can chew.
Story two- A seemingly normal relationship suddenly takes a turn for the worse. Occult fans will enjoy this one.
Story 3- A young couple move into their brand new home, immediately strange things start happening and what was supposed to be a new beginning, might just turn into their grisly end.
I really liked these stories. They were well written, not rushed in anyway and the author was able to convey an atmosphere of creeping dread in each one. They were each unique in their own way, yet they still delivered on the spook factor. I will definitely be checking out book two, especially after the way the final story ended. Quick, easy, bingeable and creepy. What more can you ask for.
SYKD book! I loved the first short story and I will be getting the rest of it. The second book was ok but didn’t fully hook me enough to want the rest. The third I’m kinda intrigued but not enough to get the rest of that one either. That one didn’t have enough in it to really get me. The first book though… I will read the rest of for sure!
Poor attention to detailing, simplistic and loop-holed plots and rushed narration. Also, the ploy to end the last story abruptly to entice readers to buy the next book was kinda annoying.
This book was such a fun read!! I am a horror freak and I have not seen this book before. I decided to get it and loved it. Very short stories but very good stories.. I just hate the fact that the last story in this book is my all time favorite and it ends with a cliffhanger and it starts up again in the second book. Ugh!! Hopefully it will be free soon so I can finish off the story.
I got this book for free and THANK GOD for that. I mean, I’m so sorry for saying this, but paying for this book should NOT be legal - actually we should get paid to read it 😭😭
Luckily I never give one star reviews, but you can think of this as a 1 from 1-4 instead 🥲
“Horrors of the Night” by Tom Coleman contains 3 short stories, with the promise of “puzzling your mind.”
The first story, “Babysitter,” was definitely the strongest out of the three. A teenager is watching over 2 children whom strike resemblances to Wednesday and Pugsley from the Addams Family. And in true Addams Family style, things go terribly wrong incredibly fast. This had the most intrigue, though some of the mannerisms for the characters seemed a bit far-fetched.
The second story, “Dark Side,” was the least captivating. A boyfriend and girlfriend living together decide to have his friends over. But the boyfriend has a top-secret room where he makes art in and no one is allowed to enter. The girlfriend becomes a little too curious about the room, and everyone pays the price. This story was apparently “inspired by true events that happened in the USA some years ago.” However, the author doesn’t cite the actual event this took inspiration from. As a reader, this is something I would’ve wanted to see. Think fans of horror tend to be the most curious and investigative, especially when a piece of media refers to true crime.
The third story, “The Curse of Hernandez,” was probably the most interesting piece, but left off on a cliffhanger. A married couple moves into a new place, and discover remnants left behind from the previous tenants. Upon discarding it, the husband and wife face hauntings inside and outside of their new beloved home. Just when things are starting to get interesting, the author decides to cut it short and continue the plot in another book. Personally, if I’m reading a compilation of short stories, I don’t want to have to switch to another book to finish reading one of them. It makes little sense, as everything should easily fit into one spot in one collection. It is a short story, after all.
There’s potential in these works, as they all spark curiosity. Especially in the first piece; I found myself wondering what went wrong with the children and craved more background. The third was definitely up my alley too, but don’t care for the idea of wrapping up the story by switching to another title.
I’d like to encourage the author to maybe have some critiques in mind with their future works, as I’d love to see their ideas prosper. There’s a lot of good substance here, it perhaps just needs a different approach.
Happy reading! 📚💕

I want to say thank you to author Tom Coleman for my complimentary copy of "Horrors of the Night: Most Scariest Stories to Puzzle Your Mind". This was the second book I read written by this author and I enjoyed this book even more than the first one I read. It's another short book and quick to read through in one sitting.
This book was three stories, but technically the third and final story was left uncompleted and on a cliffhanger so in order to find out what happens you will have to read the next book. I would have much preferred for the story to be completed in it's entirety as opposed to it just stopping as it did at the end of the book. This is the only thing I did not like about this book.
The first story is "The Babysitter" and it focuses on Rachel who is babysitting a pair of siblings. The babysitting job definitely does not go as planned and she finds herself fighting for her life. This story had all of the elements for a good quick horror read - haunted house, dark atmosphere, and death.
The second story is "Darkside" and it focuses on married couple Selene and Damien. Selene is happily married and loves everything about her husband Damien but he is hiding a secret from her and she knows there's a secret. Damien has a secret room and he has forbidden Selene from entering but when she does can she let the secret go and can she salvage her marriage?
The third and final story to this anthology is "Hernandez". This story focuses on another married couple - Christina and Carlos Hernandez and the new house they just purchased. After moving in they discover that their new home may be haunted. They see strange silhouettes running about and this is where the story ends; hence the incompletion. I understand that the author wants his readers to read his next book in the anthology, but I really did not enjoy the fact that the story was left unfinished.
Overall the book was a fun quick read that had some really great horror components and I would continue forward with reading Tom Coleman's books. Once again thank you Tom Coleman for the opportunity to read another one of your books.
"HORRORS OF THE NIGHT: most scariest stories to puzzle your mind" by Tom Coleman is a book of three horror stories, each different from the last, but all linked with violence and mystery.
There were a few grammar and spelling errors, but those can easily be fixed with a quick edit by an editor or beta reader.
In saying that none of these errors took away from the book and it's stories. I was, however, disappointed by a couple of the endings, leaving me wondering what happened. I suppose that's the point, but they just didn't feel finished and that's why I couldn't give it a four or a five.
Would I read these again? probably not, but I would totally recommend reading this. It's easy, fresh and fun.
Contains 2 short horror stories and 1 story that continues in the next book, even though it's mentioned nowhere that you get a cliffhanger story. The writing style seemed off to me, it felt like easy English was mixed with some difficult words from time to time to make it sound more interesting. The stories didn't impress me much, I didn't "shiver and sleep with the lights on". I won't be reading the other parts
In the book, Horrors of the Night, Part One, the author, Tom Coleman, presents three short horror stories. The first short story is “Babysitter” and is about Rachel, who is babysitting Jeremy, ten years old, and his sister Maya, who is eight. Rachel only has to babysit for one or two hours, but Mr. and Mrs. Grayson, their parents, are very apprehensive to leave their children alone with her. During that night Rachel will understand exactly why the parents were so concerned and why her own life is in danger. The second story, “Darkside” is about a couple, Selene Foster and Damien Richards. Damien, an artist, has recently become more and more secretive and insists that Selene is not to enter his private room. He has invited three close friends to spend the weekend and promises her that he will show her his artwork after his friends are through visiting. But when Selene goes into the basement to visit with his friends she finds that not only their lives, but her own, are in deadly peril. The third, and last story is “Hernandez” and tells the story of a married couple, Christina and Carlos Hernandez, as they get ready to move into their first home together. While moving in, they see a dark silhouette of a large man, whispers, footsteps, disembodied faces, and eventually an apparition of a young girl. After the ghost confronts Christina, Christina runs through the house in order to escape her. The story ends there, to be continued… I enjoyed the three short stories, although story one and three do not come to a conclusion. Despite the inconclusive ending, I found them still to be entertaining horror short stories. What I found amazing is that the second story is actually based on a real story!
I did not finish this book. I began with the first story, "Babysitter," and quickly realized that it fell far short of the blurb's promise to make me "shiver and sleep with the lights on." The premise was fantastic, but the execution left much to be desired. The writing was overly expository, telling rather than showing, and the dialogue felt unrealistic. Passive phrases and a lack of emotional depth in the characters detracted significantly from the story. For example, the main character wakes up in a pool of blood next to dead bodies. We are simply told that she covered the bodies, looked for her phone, and thought about the maids (who had not been mentioned before). Instead, the author could have shown her panic, her racing mind, and her thudding heart, allowing us to feel her fear and confusion rather than just reading about her actions. A particularly cringeworthy moment occurred on page 38. The main character has just been struck on the head, and the line reads, "What the hell? What is this, Jeremy?" she inquired. "Inquired" is entirely inappropriate here. She would have been screaming in terror. This choice of dialogue tag distanced me from the story and broke what little immersion I had. There are many other critiques I could offer, but suffice it to say that the author would benefit from better alpha and beta readers and a greater openness to feedback. Unfortunately, I will not be reading any more of his work and cannot recommend this book.
What an exciting read! I'm a huge fan of anthology's as it gives you a much better sense of a writers abilities, and Tom Coleman's writing style is truly addictive. It takes immense skill to not only catch a readers interest but to keep them intrigued in such a short format, yet each of these stories were extremely impressive in their execution. These stories were all so very well thought out and written with immense skill. Although they are quite short, each of them got its point across perfectly and did not feel rushed in any way. Coleman was able to construct the ideal atmosphere to elicit the eerie and unsettling emotions we feel deep in our gut.
From sadistic children to psychotic followers of the occult to a traumatizing past that comes back to haunt the future, I was completely enthralled from word one! The ominous foreshadowing and the creeping sense of dread that will send chills up the spine of even hard-core horror fans makes this a must-read for anyone who yearns all things spooky!
I enjoyed reading the short stories in this book. They were both intriguing and entertaining. My favorite story was the last one. I look forward to reading more by Coleman in hopes that he will get better. I would recommend this book however I found some disturbances within the book.
A few places had repetitive phrases and words. I noticed a few errors that didn't align with the story. I also found some run on sentences.
Please don't let these mistakes deter you from reading this book however. Overall the stories were still entertaining.
A nice little collection of three short stories. Babysitter is a classic story in the style of teenage horror genre. Darkside shows how a nice situation can quickly go bad. Similarly The Curse of Hernandez demonstrates how the perfect getaway can go oh so wrong. The third story is incomplete (finished in Book 2), but I enjoyed it as it is. There is some grammatical errors and typo’s, but this did not really worry me: many self published authors cannot afford a proof reader. If you want something to read alone at home late at night this book would do quite well.
If it wasn't for the fact that this book had promise I would have rated it 1 star, to be honest.
The last story we only got half of, meaning to continue reading you had to purchase at least one more book - without even knowing if it was going to be any good...
The two stories that were full stories were good, they just needed to be longer, expanded upon more, more detail and a deeper dive into the stories.
I guess I just thought this book was different to what it was, and whilst it did have promise I just couldn't bring myself to really enjoy it.
I received this book as a promotion by the author. It was an enjoyable and quick read. I found some of the mechanics of the writing to need some improvement and some of the story line in each of the three stories to be a little simplistic. I think with some minor adjustments and more showing vs. telling, this could be a really good set of stories. If you can work past the points I listed previous, I would recommend this as a fun read.
There are two very short stories that somehow manage to drag in the middle of each. There is also a partial third story that is "to be continued" in the next book. From the errors in the stories and the odd phrasing, it almost seems like English is not the original language of the author. The concepts were dealt with in a clunky manner of writing that lost the effects of the original ideas.Maybe that's why I felt disappointed n this book.
I was hoping for a good scare that WOULDN'T make me vomit. I don't do well with gory, slasher type horror.
Mostly I just feel let down and like I wasted my time when I could have been reading something more to my taste.
The threat of horror is enough for me. I don't want it spelled out. I don't want a mental picture painted for me. I just want a little shiver, not a river of blood, guts, and gore.
Each twisted, crazy story is written to get right to the main event. I know that these are considered short stories but they all felt very rushed and juvenile. The stories would take a little bit to get to the main part but once it got there everything happened very quickly and boom the story was done.
This book is in a series of 5 or 6 other books that I’d been considering reading. But now I will not be reading them.
