God, I wanted to like Valentine's wife. It's very rare to see an LGTB+ character in shonen. But we ended up with a character who is hypersexual, makes sexual advances on a minor, and dies an excessively violent death. I don't think Araki set out with bad intentions, but he definitely dropped the ball.

Outside of that, this volume did a lot right. We got a full book of action where the majority of the cast is female. Lucy has won a lot of points with me due to her sheer tenacity. The mission to steal the president's heart, which is also the heart of Christ (symbolism!), is thrilling. Lucy is a child struggling to get by in an adult world, both in terms of social standing and in terms of stand powered violence. Nobody has her side and everybody is taking advantage of her. She's way in over her head, leaving me on the edge of my seat for the entire thing.

While I wasn't big on Hot Pants, she's won me over recently as well. Her battle with Tube Boy was similarly exciting. While a major character, it does feel as though she could plausibly die before the later stages of story. So this was an instance where Jojo's tendency to gruesomely injure its cast felt thrilling. When Giorno's arms were cut off in the fight against B.I.G., I was annoyed because I knew he would end up being fine and he had taken such a horrible injury for no reason. When Hot Pants's arms were cut off, I was flipping out because I legitimately believed she was done for.

While I expected Tubular Bells to be a dull stand, it ended up making for one of the most exciting battles in Steel Ball Run. Such a weirdly specific power gets put to great use. It's kind of like the brilliance of Luffy. You take a seemingly useless power and just turn it into gold.

Starting Wrecking Ball, I feel like there's a bit of parallel between Johnny and Gryo vs Wekapipo and Magenta Magenta. There's the obvious comparison of Gyro and Wekapipo both using steel balls, but the random humorous small talk between Wekapipo and Magenta reminds me of the dynamic between the two protagonists. It's a solid set up. I almost kind of wish we'd have gotten to see them bump into each other a few times before the big fight, but it's not a big deal.

The word I keep coming back to for this volume is thrilling. Be it Lucy's infiltration or the battle with Tubey Bells. The violence for this volume had been cranked up to 11, and the heroes felt more vulnerable than ever, making for an intense read.

The Tubular Bells arc, whilst narratively integral, was a weaker arc than those surrounding it. The sexualization of Lucy Steel was uncomfortable, Cream Starter's disguise ability came out of left field, and Mike O. was defeated too quickly.

I am excited to re-consume the arc(s) featuring Wekapipo and Magenta Magenta. The gaudy colours implied by the character designs are far less distracting when rendered in monochrome. Wekapipo's design, especially, is much easier on the eyes. Overall, Wrecking Ball is off to a strong start.

this was an experience.
I loved Lucy-centric chapters, she's one of my faves, but I can't say I like the killing off of sapphic character one chapter later she's introduced. and so brutally, as well.

Definitely CWs for body horror and gore, spousal abuse in ch.51.

Series: Steel Ball Run #13
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

This volume is split into two parts with the beginning focusing on Lucy and the end focusing back on Johnny and Gyro. This picks up right where the previous volume ended, Lucy is with the First Lady and is seducing her to try and get closer to the President. While this works it still really bothers me that Lucy is so freaking young and even Scarlet points out that her husband is like 30 years older than her, which I know was common during this time but still not Araki could have made her older.

While Lucy was initially extremely annoying, in this volume we see her step up and get close enough to the president to get the body parts he had and take down his crazy wife Scarlet in the process. Yes she has some help from Hot Pants but I was very surprised by Lucy in this one. Also Hot Pants continues to surprise me with her abilities. They may not seem like much but they can really do a lot of damage.

Next we switch to a new character called Wekapiko who we learn was from Gyro’s country and was exiled after trying to save his sister from an abusive marriage. He is also a wielder of steel balls and is now working for the President to assassinate Johnny and Gyro, and of course return the body parts that were stolen. Wekapiko and Gyro’s battle has just started at the end of this volume but I am very interested in seeing what will happen next.

TW: gun violence; domestic abuse;

I actually really like Lucy Steel even though we don’t know much about her except that she’s 14 and married to someone 35 years older than her… alas I hope we do find out more about her!!

also new enemies for Johnny and Gyro with that person being from Gyro’s home country?? with his own set of steel balls?!!?! :0

**Will contain spoilers**

SBR Volume 13: We start off this volume with a very uncomfortable scene between Lucy and the president's wife, Scarlet Valentine. Lucy is very brave and smart, and goes through way more than a 14 year old girl ever should. I also see a lot more of her body than I ever wanted to. Araki makes it very hard to defend him with the gratuitous panty shots.

I was NOT expecting Hot Pants to come in like that.

Switching gears to the standoff between Wekapipo and the guys - the beginning of this fight is very fun to read. I love how Johnny always completely loses his cool during fights and constantly turns to Gyro, as if he has any answers. It is a consistent characterization we see throughout the manga, and I absolutely love it. Johnny is such an underrated protagonist.

"You little whore! I'm going to scrape your breasts off with my bullets!"

but seriously please Araki, I don't want to read about a 14 year old whoring herself out to save her 50 year old pedo husband........ this better be going somewhere ISTG. excited to see this Wekapipo guy fuck up gyro tho... he didn't personally do anything wrong I assume but it'll be satisfying anyways

4 estrellas.

This volume animated is going to be VERY gory and graphic which will be interesting to see what they keep from this manga and what they leave out… this volume was mainly just Lucy not being able to catch a break again

What a book to end the year on, this manga is absolutely banana's at it's best, and just does so many odd things. I really enjoy it, but it's so bizarre.
