Hirohiko Araki ( 荒木飛呂彦) is a Japanese manga artist. He left school before graduation from Miyagi University of Education.
He enjoys the baseball manga Kyojin No Hoshii (Star of the Giants); the video games Mario Kart and Bomberman; and likes Prince and other African-American singers, as well as jazz, rock, and rap.
Steel Ball Run is just Too Damn Good. This volume is another thriller. It really feels like things are moving towards the climax, with all points converging on Philadelphia.
Lucy's scenes are always so intense. I might have already said this, but it reminds me of why I enjoyed It Chapter 1 so much. There's a strong sense of powerlessness that comes with having your character be a child. She's weaker and navigating a world she doesn't fully understand. But she's clever and quick enough to just get by, always being a step away from death. And the whole time she's on the verge of having a breakdown of falling apart.
Valentine's philosophy is the perfect distillation of America's historic values. Disregarding agreed upon rules, basic altruism, and common decency, America has always strove to be "he who takes the napkin first" at any cost. Be it human rights violations, imperialism, oppression, slavery, or genocide. There is no crime too horrific. America will do whatever it deems necessary to ensure to set the pace that it will then force everyone else to follow. Valentine seeks to use the literal corpse of Christ to justify his authority, just as America has used Manifest Destiny as justification for genocide. And of course, after espousing this philosophy, Valentine tries to rape a child. The office of President has a proud history of rape.
The slow build up of Lucy becoming a proxy for the virgin Mary was stunning. When I realized what was going on, my jaw hit the floor. To this point, Jesus has only showed up to a mentally impaired man, a crippled man, and a meek child. Araki is constantly walking this razor's edge of respectfully portraying Biblical events while also portraying ugly side of Christian America's politics.
Other highlights include include the reappearance of Magenta Magenta and Wekapipo. These guys have really grown on me. Magenta in particular. That moment with the ruler made me burst out laughing- a rare treat for manga. It doesn't probably mean anything, but Magenta being the stand-in for Kars is pretty wild. Lucy being a Pendelton was a nice surprise too. It really feels like we're getting in a few more references to parts 1 and 2 before hurtling toward the climax.
Everyone is converging on the same location and the stakes are rising. Pretty much every other front-runner for the race has been killed off. So I worry that my boy Pocoloco isn't long for this world. Here's my ranking for who I think has the best chances of winning
1. Dio 2. Pocoloco 3. Johnny 4. Norisuke Higashkata 5. Gyro
Sorry folks, but Gyro has death written all over him. Womp womp.

had to let this one simmer before i bit. i ... funny valetine is .... FUCK. LUCY MY POOR FUCKING QUEEN. WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED. any man or woman who hurt her will be killed BY ME. and to learn mr steel isn't the freak but some dude who never hurt her or touched her and wanted to protect her like.... but... uh... i. yeah that ... THAT scene was spinechilling and made my stomach go into knots. and that was the point! and that's why this manga is fucking AMAZING
actually not bothered by the lack of female characters but i believe araki could've written better stories for the female characters in hand. big emphasis on lucy if you really think about it. i love her but araki fr needs let go of that 14 year old girl
The characters have had enough time to develop to really lend body to this volume. The fight between Wekapipo and Magenta Magenta is well-told and tense (notably for Steven Steel's involvement) but nowhere near as tense as Lucy's battle against the president. Lucy fights valiantly for her cause and Funny Valentine establishes himself as an absolutely despicable, power-obsessed villain: a foe to be reckoned with. The tension mounts as the climax draws ever closer!
I like that Lucy has lots of screen time in this volume, but I don't like the development of her arc. Instead of her doing things on her own will, things happen to Lucy, unfortunate and unhappy. I am not a fan of a 12 year old girl marrying 50 year old man plot point, even though we learn the reasons for it in this volume. I've disliked Steel since vol.1 and it's too late for me to change my mind.
All in all, this volume has been all over the place but I do think the next will be better because of what went down here.
Series: Steel Ball Run #16 Rating: 3 stars - I liked it
TW: sexual assault
This volume focuses on Lucy and what is happening while she is hiding as Scarlet, the First Lady. While I have waffled on my feelings for Lucy, this volume took her story arc in a direction that I don’t really love. Lucy has been hiding as Scarlet for a while now and has been waiting for a chance to escape, which I don’t understand why it hasn’t come up yet because you have been traveling from Chicago to Philadelphia, but whatever. Now she is actually having a chat with the President and he notices she isn’t the same. When he comes on to her, the gig is up. Unfortunately, he doesn’t plan to take no for an answer and even says he doesn't care she is a spy and not his real wife, he will keep her around just so he can have kids. Just another reason to hate the president. So I don’t love that we have 14 year old girl dealing with being almost raped after being sold to Mr. Steel as a “fake” wife anyways.
Lucy’s story goes even more off the rails when Lucy fights off the president's advances and while running away comes across the corpse body, which impregnates her. Yep we have a virgin birth storyline on top of all the Jesus Christ references. Lucy’s whole story from the beginning has been one that I have not been happy with but I thought it was getting better when she was finally fighting back and stealing the corpse parts from the president but we are back to her being helpless and at the hands of the President still.
Outside of Lucy, we return to Wekapipo who has come to the rescue of Mr. Steel who is being targeted by Magenta Magenta because he has realized that Lucy was still alive and where she was. Magenta and Wekapipo battle it out and Magenta finds himself trapped in the bottom of a river protected by his stand but unable to free himself without the risk of drowning.
While I didn’t love a lot of what happened in this issue, this series continues to be good and I am enjoying it overall. Also I will say I am always surprised by what happens in this series because it's never anything you would expect.

This volume overarching feel was overwhelming fear. I think the panels and interactions between Valentine and Lucy was a good portrayal of catastrophe incoming for Lucy as Valentine continued to creep towards understanding what was going on. The juxtaposition on how Steel and Valentine treats those far younger than themselves was a good way to cement the atrocities that Valentine is willing to commit in order to gain power. The way he was portrayed in each panel also solidified the unsettling aura that had been building up for the past few volumes. I think overall a great volume, not having a fight as the focus of the volume felt like a good change of pace for the introduction of whatever Valentine’s stand might be.
Also does his stand just make him looksmaxx when he feels like it? He went from obese to chiseled in the span of three panels.

Filthy Acts at a Reasonable Price makes its first appearance, kind of. The panel in which it appears is cool as fuck, but we don't see enough yet to know its ability. I was somewhat surprised at first to see that the Corpse was almost entirely collected and Funny Valentine was on his way to establish himself more firmly as the main villain, but... this isn't really unusual for JoJo pacing, so I guess I just have brain problems...!
The return of Wekapipo was pretty cool as well, and it's darkly humorous how Magenta is defeated.
Gyro's new gag is the funniest shit I've seen in ages.
3.5 stars.... jojo has always been on the vulgar side but this volume was a whole another level i was so excited to see "dirty deeds done dirt cheap" cuz ive heard the name so much but it was NOT what i expected at all tw // rape
7 days in a week really helped dissipate the serious turn this volume took and ended the whole thing on a light note (not that i wasnt still reeling from the horror).
I literally do not have any recollection of the prior volume, but this one was intense. Had me on the edge of my seat at every turn of the page! I think that the decision to have things play out in a certain way is really gross and I could've done without some panels, but still really good.
really unsure where my rating stands with this volume. i care so much about lucy and am absolutely gutwrenched by the direction they’re going. the valiant moment of her self-defense was absolutely wrecked and all i want to do is protect her from everyone lol
a great set of chapters with interesting antagonists. i would say my faves are wekapipo and axl ro and in my opinion they seemed to be the most challenging for gyjo. that last mini chapter sums up why i love gyro ! he’s so silly and johnny entertains it every time lol
Pretty good 7th part of Jojo’s bizarre Adventures and far from the best! This series lacks awesome intense fights and the story of this series was dull😭😁❤️❤️
