The Masks We Break

Rate this book
Love.

It’s the most widely used deception in the world. It creates weakness within the mind, leaving rooms for distractions, and threatens to hinder my goals of success. I won’t allow something as inconsequential as love to get in my way.

Even if it means pushing away the only one who’s ever made me feel something.

Remy Solace.

She’s a dangerous distraction.

She’s the sun, threatening to incinerate the darkness from my soul, and keep me from focusing on what really matters–what I’ve always wanted.

And while every fiber of my being knows I need to stay away, I can’t help but wonder...

What good is a knight without a queen to protect?

Hey there! My name is Lee. I like to think of myself as a bibliophile who belongs to the Ravenclaw house.
I write romances that can sometimes be sweet and spicy or deadly and kinky. I'm a firm believer in happily ever afters and men who always make sure their woman is satisfied first.
When I'm not writing, I'm drowning myself in a good book, losing track of time on the Nintendo Switch with my kids, and laughing or yelling at one of my husbands practical jokes. (He likes to leave fake spiders and roaches around.)
Also, something important to note. I live off Chai and Dean Winchester.

The Masks We Break was just meh… I struggled getting through this one. For one It was quite boring. The story just didn’t hold my interest.
Two Blaze wasn’t a hero I particularly enjoyed. He was actually a douche bag throughout the story in my opinion. Plus the vibe I was getting from him was, he really just wasn’t into Remy as if he could live with out her. Maybe it was just me..🤷🏻‍♀️ Unlike Remy she was the total opposite, she was obsessed with Blaze. If I had to sum up Remy in one word it would be….pathetic!

Blaze nickname for her was spot one “puppet” she was basically throwing herself at him all the time. It was so bad I kept saying…have some self respect girl! 🤦🏽‍♀️

Overall I wasn’t to impressed with book 2….
I’m hoping The Masks We Burn with Amora will be better. 🤞🏼

I have been waiting for this couple since the first book. I was most intrigued by Remy and Blaze and was really invested in them even with their side roles in the first book!

I really did enjoy this book. I love how Blaze was more closed off and Remy was still able to sneak in, even when Blaze told her it wasn't going to happen. Love creeps up on everyone differently, and even though Remy effected Blaze in some way he was still hell bent not giving himself to her fully. Even though everything he did was to protect Remy in someway or eventually mean something in someway (the bookcase!!!!) Like it just happened naturally, like it was his second nature. I loved that. Even when our brains are trying to be logical our hearts are a completely different story.

I also really loved that Lee branched out a bit and added some light kink into the book. I think the choice to have them experiment together and figure out what they were into together was amazing. The communication of it all was incredible and sweet and hot! Great job on that Lee!

Also everything came together really beautifully and smoothly in the end. I recommend this if you like you your sweet romance with a bit of edge! ; )

Excited for the next and final book!

The Masks We Break is an opposites attract romance, interconnected standalone and book #2 in the Emerald Falls series. Although, you don't need to read book #1 "The Masks We Wear" I highly recommend it that you do, it will enhance your reading experience. After reading The Masks We Wear I couldn't wait to read Blaze and Remy's story! Lee Jacquot's writing technique is exquisite! "The Masks We Wear" was my first bully romance read, and because of this amazing read I've come to love this trope! But Lee Jacquot took The Masks We Break to another level!! The storyline is amazing!! Seeing the main characters developing throughout the book and the flow of plot as it unravelled, it was **chef's kiss**. One of my favorite things about this read is how Lee Jacquot portrayed the heroine, Remy. Remy is a major bookworm, and she has a passion for reading. And I become pleasantly surprised when I see authors portraying characters like this, it only makes my reading experience more enjoyable. And Blaze (hero), wow! He hides a lot underneath the harsh exterior he has. There's so much more to him than it meets the eye. I'm super hyped to read Amora's book! The sneak peek definitely kept me on edge and I'm so curious at how book #3 is going to play out!

Blaze and Remy attended high school together, and now they are at the same university. Ever since high school there's an undeniable attraction and chemistry between them. Blaze can be seen as your typical "bad boy", and Remy as a shy girl who has a love of reading romance novels. Both of them come from families that have very high expectations from them, and this weighs heavily on their shoulders. Blaze cares deeply about Remy he is her "knight in shining armour", whenever Remy needed someone to lean on Blaze has always been there.  But his hot and cold behavior gives Remy a mental whiplash. Blaze doesn't need any distractions, he has been fighting his feelings for Remy for so long. And eventually he gives in. Remy is a beautiful much needed distraction for him, to forget about his plans and dark looming thoughts. Blaze can easily read Remy, and Remy slowly started to break down Blaze's defences.

A good fast read

Remy is a girl who has the next 30 years of her life laid out to her by her a-hole of a father, but has a true love for books

Blaze is tortured, hot and cold, and just plain Hot

Makes for a great combo! The book was a fast read and a stand alone in its series, though it does hint back to the first book, a bully romance.

The author does a great job at showing a romance while delving in to how different people deal with trauma

I'm gonna put a disclaimer here. Read the first book in the series before you read this one. You can squeak by without it but for the full effect, read The Masks We Wear first because the characters are in both books.

I absolutely enjoyed this book. I loved this one more than the first book and I think it's because the characters were more relatable for me personally. I enjoyed the banter and the raw emotions and conversations that played out between two young people that grew up faster than they should have. But sometimes that's how life goes for some of us and it's nice to see that in a book. There was love and heartbreak and the emotional growth, realization and healing the characters went through was amazing. The romance doesn't hurt either (yes, it's a bit smutty).

Overall, definitely worth reading because Remi and Blaze are my favorite couple in this series and I'm so glad they got their own book. I cannot wait for William and Amora's story coming out later in 2021.

*I was given an advanced reader copy in return for an honest review. The author did not purchase my review or persuade me in any way. These thoughts and words are my own.*

Hmm, I have mixed feelings about this book.

May contain spoilers, so read at your own risk.

Remy is an intelligent girl, who as a baby, had her mother's death in her book of life, since she can remember, she has had great conflicts with her father. If we can call this mere sp*rm donor a father! From childhood, she had her destiny and career mapped out. But as a hopeless romantic, she dreams of having her own real-life novel written by herself.

That's where her bad boy comes in, Blaze, athlete on the college football team, Blaze has his own demons to exorcise, and one of them is her little puppet, Remy Solace. He always had a crush on Remy, but he never wanted to admit it, because he didn't believe in love. As Remy, she struggled to get Blaze to see her.

The plot is cool, the sex scenes are very hot, we have a twist of the innocent girl who was psychologically abused by her father, where she sees that she can cut off all relationships with her sp*rm donor and follow her life and her dreams. And the good guy gets what she's planned for throughout the book.

That's it, until next time.

Uhmmm...boring.
The story had nothing to offer. It had almost no substance, except for both MCs, who had troubled relationships with their fathers.
Remy and Blaze were PAINFULLY basic. Remy - reads infinity amount of books per second and Blaze cannot express feelings, is an alpha and plays football. Get out of here. They had nothing deep about them, even the relationship was shallow. Attraction? Yeah, sure. The MASSIVE love that was put into words (rather than demonstrated) ? No, they did not have that.
This book told a lot of things and feelings, however, it did not show it. I want to feel what the characters have between them, or what they are going trough individually.
I love s p i c e in my literature, and it promised me that Blaze would be an "insane" lover. BruH, such weak scenes, simply disappointing in general.
With all that said, there definitely were moments where I gasped and was shocked by two or three scenes, but that is about it. Room for improvement.

I jumped on the opportunity to recieve an ARC for Lee's debut novel, The Masks We Wear, and I was a fan from the start of it. By the end I was dying for more of Blaze and Remy so when I recieved the chance to also review their continuing story I was so excited.

Blaze is the book boyfriend of 2021. He has all the right characteristics that keep you hooked and wanting more of whatever he has to give.
Remy really comes in to her own here. I love the character she is even more by the end but she was always great let's be real.

There are several times that it refers back to book 1 and certain moments become a little clearer which I always enjoy when reading through a series. Even though they are technically stand alones following different couples within Emerald Falls I highly recommend reading them in order.

I can not WAIT for book 3. Ugh these secondary characters definitely deserve their story.

Thanks Lee for my early copy 🖤

I absolutely loved this book. Blaze and Remy were amazing.

Blaze was so mysterious in the first book, we didn’t know too much about him and I didn’t know what to expect. He was everything I didn’t know I needed. He is an alpha (obvi), smart, lowkey funny, straight forward, and full of unexpected surprises. The way he pays attention to Remy and all the small details is so beautiful. I absolutely loved him.

Remy was quite the surprise. We know quite a bit about her from the first book especially her love for romance books. She was even more than what I expected and she was lowkey freaky (it’s always the quiet ones). She just made me smile and I loved her personality and her attraction to Blaze.

Together, they could relate to each other on so many different levels. Also, whenever they were together—no one else existed. UGH. So cute.

There were a bunch of twists and turns and I absolutely loved it.a

This book was sooo good. I mean... It was frustrating, it was lovely, it was sweet, it was kinky, it was heartbreaking, it was hearwarming - it was AMAZING!

I loved Remy and Blaze and their relationship - I loved that when they got together, they were together and there was no miscommunication drama or other people drama.

I wished Remy's confrontation with her dad was more explosive, but Blaze's with his dad was perfect.

The sex scenes and the experimentation was lovely to "see" - the way they were discovering things together.

What I didn't like - the piercing was a very big MEH for me, but that's just me.

What I loved - EVERYTHING, but especially the bookcase!!!!!!!!!!!

I for sure did not feel like I missed out by not reading the first book, but I'll know for sure when I read it (hopefully soon) and I can't to read book 3 with Amora and (IT BETTER BE!) Will.

After reading Lee’s debut novel, The Masks We Wear, I was very eager to get back into the world of Emerald Falls. Blaze intrigued me from the previous book so once I started this book I couldn’t put it down.

Blaze and Remy are everything. I loved seeing how much they have grown since the first book. I especially loved seeing Remy become more confident and seeing Blaze deal with his demons and learning how to love.

The Masks We Break is technically a standalone novel, but it is recommended to read The Masks We Wear first, because it provides important background to not only Remy and Blaze, but other relationships and characters.

I’m looking forward to reading book #3 in the Emerald Falls Series.

I was so excited to read The Masks We Break. Remy and Blaze's story was one that I wanted after the first book. I enjoyed learning more about certain events that happened in the first book from Remy and Blaze's point of view. This book was a quick read because I could not put it down. The evolution of Remy and Blaze was incredible to read. I was happy to see a "nerdy" character who was not the stereotypical nerd who was painted into a corner of just being smart. I strongly identify wit Remy which made reading this book extra great. I highly recommend the Emerald Falls series and Lee Jacquot as an author. I am excited to see what she releases next!!

The second I found out that Blaze was getting his own book, I hit buy so fast it'll make your head spin. I needed to know his relationship to Remy from the second the two came on the page together in The Masks We Wear. This follows up two years out of high school and now in their college days. Remy is every romance reader I know. A girl who logically knows romances in books are not real, but also craves the love she reads in them. And Blaze...oof...Blaze is a man I would most certainly NEVER kick out of bed. They both face struggles, both alone and together, and the spice is just right for the characters.

i felt it went by too fast i got whiplash.
remy although i understand that she is a romance reader needs to get her head out her ass? like she was obsessed with a boy that had shown no interest ever. and she holds for hope? doesn’t make sense, honestly it’s pathetic.
blaze…bruh wtf is wrong with you? ik you experienced trauma but it doesn’t give you the right to treat people like that, if you know ever that you can’t reciprocate feelings you don’t lead her on. so honestly i don’t care if he did from the beginning, he should’ve understood those “unexpected” emotions before dragging her in.

Yes, yes, yes! I love Remy and Blaze, both have deep issues but connect on a whole different level. It was pure magic reading about their love and issues. Seeing them overcome those personal issues only made me love them more. They deserve their happy ending they worked hard for it.

So I came into this book not having read the first book, and I didn’t feel completely lost. I do want to go back and read it to get more background on Blaze and Remy though.

I loved the relationship between Blaze and Remy. The growth that they both went through not only separately but
together just made it that much better.

Can’t wait to continue the story!

I hated Blaze, having to read about him constantly wanting to fuck away his feelings, in the beginning, was the biggest ick. Not to mention he was a douchebag. Remy was even worse. She had no self-respect and gave that man way too many chances when she should've left his ass on the curb and not look back!

I received this as an ARC for an honest review

I read this book in one sitting, yes one sitting! I couldnt put it down.

This story revolves around Remy, the quiet/ nerdy girl, and Blaze, the broody/stone hard bad boy. Do I need to say more? No but do I want to? Absolutely.

This is a standalone book but is part of a series (book 2) and for better enjoyment I would recommend starting with The Mask We Wear.

Okay, with that said let’s begin.

This book starts with Remi and Blaze seeing/glancing each at a gala event on their way out and you can feel the tension between them already. They haven’t seen each other in 2 years after this destiny played its course. They see each other constantly and the angst! They attract each other like magnets and it’s the definition of polar opposite attract.

This book is about chances, learning about ones self and being able to grow.It will tear down walls to be able to build new ones and keep building.

The writing is absolutely amazing and the character build up. I cant wait to read the next one in the series

P.s
The scenes in the book are delicious 😆

A book on the borderline...

I think a major component of this book was about perspective. Perception even. Love is a word that over time has become something beyond a simple definition.

Blaze started off doing exactly that. Defining love as a simple avoidable thing. Even a bit of an ugly thing. He was so closed off he didn't see it for what it was for the longest time. Remy did her part bringing it to light. These two were both rapturous in their own ways. They each had their own appeal and you couldn't help but root for them.

The pain and inner conflict was crushed and molded into something mesmerizing. Book one was so unique that I worried this one would be cast under shadow. Not an issue at all, they both deserve incredible spotlight and I'm so do excited to read book 3!

Amazing Read

“The one so pure you think she might make you feel something... But you realize instead, you’ll darken her light. There is no such thing as fairy tales—just fool’s gold.” ~ Blaze

Two broken souls who find light within each other. Blaze and Remy are explosive together. Love all the twist and turns and their ending is electric.

Oh my freaking God! I could not put this book down. I felt like I was right there in the story watching it unfold. I love the relationship between Remy and Blaze. I felt very related to Remy, as a bookworm and figuring what she likes in life. I enjoyed that Lily and Spencer made small mentions to connect the previous story. I loved this book!!! A massive thank you to Lee Jacquot for sending me a copy of 'The Masks We Break' in exchange for an honest review.

In the sequel to 'The Masks We Wear', we follow Blaze and Remy's own journeys of loss, secrets, pain, and love -- all in the hopes those two roads converge, finally bringing them together.

Remembering Remy Solace from the first installment of Jacquot's 'Emerald Falls Series', I was excited to see what she got up to. I recall her being a loveable, loyal nerdy girl completely captivated with her own bad boy. In 'The Masks We Break', we find Remy in college, still as loveable, still as loyal, still as nerdy, and still completely in love with Blaze. Granted, she hadn't seen him since high school, but all that changes when she runs he moves across the hall from her. While I truly enjoyed reading Remy's POV, because she has such a unique way of seeing the world, as in finding herself comparing moments of her life to her precious books, I found that she lacked some depth. Of course, we know she carries the grief and wrongful guilt of losing her mother, but I felt like we don't truly see how that changed her life. Yes, Remy has been living the life her father wanted her to have, but there wasn't much gratification when she broke out from her complacency. For me, there wasn't much to her growth throughout this book. While strength does come in many forms, I wanted her to find her own in a much more impactful way.

In contrast, in the first installment of 'Emerald Falls Series', I wasn't that invested in Blaze. In that book, there was some mystery to him, but I figured it was just another bad boy with a not-too-secret golden heart. However, in 'The Masks We Break', Blaze truly stole the show. First of all, he wasn't just another bad boy with a not-too-secret golden heart. I don't think he was ever a bad boy, but Blaze had never been shown genuine love and kindness, so he grew up thinking he didn't deserve it. That maybe it never could exist. When his fascination with Remy threatens to challenge those ideas, Blaze does the right thing (in his head) by being upfront with her, about he just doesn't think he'll ever be able to give her the type of love she reads in her books. But he doesn't lie about caring about her; he'll do whatever he can to protect her, and he demonstrates that time and time again throughout this book. As well, to me, his character has the most growth because despite dealing with his feelings for Remy, Blaze is working on breaking free from the hold his abusive father has on him. He knows his father isn't a good man, but instead of taking on that same title, Blaze doesn't want to screw people over. He wants to do better, even if that means taking his father down.

As for the romance aspect of 'The Masks We Break', I did like the relationship between Remy and Blaze. There is something always so magnetic about the quiet, nose-buried-in-a-book girl who captures the attention of that bad boy with the not-too-secret golden heart. Their characters being together made sense, and I appreciated the timeline shifts within this book to show us those sparks that set their fire aflame.

Our dreams are dreams because, in our heads, they are perfect, without flaw or struggle., but once we achieve those long-sought-after fantasies, they morph into nightmares. They are tainted with the inability to live up to all we thought and riddled with problems we didn't perceive

I had the profound honour of not just being on Lee's ARC team, but also on her social media street team to promote and support this amazing addition to the Emerald Falls series. In exchange for a chance to read The Masks We Break before release, I offered to provide an honest review of my thoughts and experiences while reading.

TW provided by author: physical abuse, graphic consensual sexual scenes, parental neglect

Remy is a shy and nerdy young woman who is perfectly happy with a nose in a book and keeping a busy academic schedule. Blaze is a quiet, stoic man who fights to keep his image while shouldering the future of his father's company while maintaining status as football star and popular college student. Truly opposites - or are they?

Underneath their generic exteriors, there are depths to both characters that lend to well-thought-out trauma and motivations. Family obligation and duty. Need for perfection. Wanting to belong, but not wanting to be tied down due to commitments to study/family.

Lee has this talent of bringing real-world problems to the page. I was that over-achieving perfectionist in high school which turned into a mal-adjusted young adult trying to navigate university and a social life all while trying to adult at the same time. Plain to say that it did not work. I feel that Lee does such a great job at capturing the feelings surrounding the desire to please family tradition while trying to find your own path.

Not to mention the magnetic attraction on the page - whew!

Though it's not imperative to read The Masks We Wear prior to jumping into this book, it does provide some insight into the brief interactions between Remy and Blaze during high school. The tension. The changes in demeanor over the 3 years between Point A and Point B. When I first received snippets of some of the... racier... encounters, I was concerns that they would be placed during high school-era Remy & Blaze, but I was pleasantly surprised to see these interactions taking place in a much more mature and suitable setting of college.

All around a very good read and I look forward to the third installation in the Emerald Falls Series (sneak peak at the end of Book 2! ...what, you thought I'd let it slip here? Nice try!)

RUN, DO NOT WALK, RUN TO READ THIS BOOK. I am obsessed. Jacquot did such a fantastic job making this couple work so well despite how different they are. This book is the second book of the inter-connected Emerald Falls series. You can read it as a standalone, but I HIGHLY recommend you read "The Masks We Wear" because it gives you a good idea of Remy and Blaze's relationship before the book.

Remy Solace starts as timid, but her growth throughout the book was so great to read. Some will critique her initial attraction to Blaze and how she can't stop herself from trying to break through his mask. However, I believe how she leans on him and finds her strength in him even when they aren't together is a necessary part of her character development. She is a reader, making her character relatable even though she is struggling with issues I will never experience. She relates her experiences to the romance novels she has read which I enjoyed because it highlighted that what she is doing maybe frustrating to readers. She's level headed but also willing to take risks which I love. Jacqout did such an amazing job with her character development.

I cannot put enough words in this review to describe Blaze Bardot. Dominating, sexy, protective, handsome, and thoughtful are just a few that come to mind. From the first chapter, I was captivated by his character and how he came to believe what he did about love. He is the kind of dangerous every girl can't help but love in a book. He is cool, calm, and collected but when it comes to Remy he will put everything on the line if it means she is okay. I want to say so much more but what I feel about Blaze is literally something I cannot put into words. He is controlling but not in a way that is suffocating. He instills confidence in Remy and makes sure she knows she is beautiful. He is determined to do the right thing no matter what and will work to correct every mistake he makes. I absolutely love him and wish the book never ended so I could get more of him.

I am begging you to read this book. I haven't heard of anyone else reading this book which is such a shame because it was FANTASTIC!!! Remy and Blaze are so great on their own but when they come together it is electric. They build each other up and find themselves through that love. Just read it Read this book. I can't say it enough; read this wonderful book.

I loved this book! Devoured it in a day and a half!
It’s even better than the first! 😍

Remy is a bookworm who always wished to live her own enemies-to-lovers story.
Well guess what?? Blaze comes in the picture.

In high school he denies her to keep from hurting her feelings, but after 2 years, and not being able stay way away from each other even though they know it can’t end well things get steamy!🥵

The characters growth throughout the book is amazing, both Remy and Blaze find their strengths through each other taking control of their own lifes.

The ending was wholesome and i can’t wait to read Amora’s and William’s story!

I gave 4 ⭐️ instead of 5 because i kind of missed my boy Spencer in the book.
The fact that he was only mentioned and barely made an appearance towards the end was kind of disappointing. Especially since the friendship between him and Remy was really strong in the first book. So they both could have been there for each other in waht they were going through! But i liked the aspect of her and Lily and Amora becoming close friends.
Also, I would have liked to see more of Lily’s and Blaze’s friendship from his POV, and more of his relationship with her aunt.
I hope to see more of all the characters in the next one.

Baaaaby. I want to start this off by saying I am captain of the ‘the original is always better than the sequel’ team in regards to movies and books. HOWEVER- this book has me reconsidering my entire stance.

*This read can be read as a stand alone but I would recommend reading the first so you have information regarding the other characters.

Anyways- let’s dive in!

I was hooked by the first sentence. Blaze is the captain of my heart and the star in my bad boy dreams. Morally grey, smoldering hot, out of touch with his own feelings AND has family drama? Sign. Me. Up.

Remy starts off as a shy, slightly insecure student who also has her share of family chaos. Beautiful but unaware, smart, and a book girl as well! We love.

The tension between these two had me squealing and I thought the slow burn was going to light me on fire. I was SO impatient for them to figure it out!

That being said, this book did a wonderful job of not only having these two grow as a pair, but as individuals as well. They were able to overcome personal issues and while they were there for each other, neither was dependent on each other and I LOVE that. Watching Remy blossom into a woman and Blaze come to terms with his own emotional turmoil was So enjoyable.

Also the spicy scenes? Oof. But even more than that, the tender moments with Daddy Blaze really were the start of the show here.

Anyways, I’m obsessed. Read this if you can!
