Een overzichtelijke, heldere analyse van de strategische gebieden waarop China een voorsprong opbouwt ten opzichte van de westerse wereld, vooral de Verenigde Staten. Volgens de auteur kunnen zich in China interne ontwikkelingen voordoen die het wereldleiderschap zullen vertragen of tenietdoen.

Dit boek maakt een onderscheid tussen de Chinese economie en de Chinese politiek.
Is de Chinese economie nog te stoppen? Waarschijnlijk niet, maar dat hoeft ook geen probleem te zijn.
De vraag is echter: tot waar gaat de honger naar macht van de CCP en in het bijzonder die van president Xi? Dit boek werpt een kritische blik op de CCP en president Xi Jinping en bekijkt de gevolgen van hun gedrag.
Is de Chinese economie nog te stoppen? Waarschijnlijk niet, maar dat hoeft ook geen probleem te zijn.

indrukwekkend helder en onderbouwd boek over China anno 2021. Neen, China is niet te stoppen. Zal het ten onder gaan aan eigen contradicties? Wait and see, het land zal eerder ten onder gaan aan een ontspoorde autocratie door de fouten te maken die elk autocratisch regime maakt (zichzelf dienen en niet meer het volk)

My question: is it at all possible to have an autocracy, a kind of enlightened dictatorship, where people nevertheless have a great degree of freedom of expression, open discussion of ideas for change?
Several interesting statements and facts in this book, but author is more a businessman who likes to do a little writing than someone who has a good line of thinking to share. Still, he seems to know quite a bit about China, past and present [and Taiwan, where he also did some business].
Taiwan, South Korea and Japan he cites as countries who have been able to combine collective tradition/mentality/values with constitutional democracy, rule of law [separation of powers?] and freedoms.
Interestingly, author states that China CANNOT be deeply and fully known/understood. [op een diepere niveau is China niet echt te kennen] --89--Would he think other countries are?
Presumably most of the book was written in 2017 and [re]published as a book due to current events in 2021 with just minor additions. [No problem with that.]
China is now the biggest trading partner of 2/3 of the countries of the world [having surpassed the US in this regard some time ago]. China uses economic leverage to punish any country that does or says something they don't like; this is at least preferable to military interventions. Europe ought to get its act together and act as a solid block in economic relations with China, that way Europe could have real power vis a vis China; instead, China can make all kinds of deals individually with countries, most recent examples Greece and Bulgaria. It's a kind of tribute system -- you [smaller country] behave yourself with China and we will give you trade privileges.
HSN figures China is aiming not at a Win-Win situation with western countries, but with Total Victory/control over the rest of the world. 89
China's annual budget for internal/domestic security [i.e. spying on its own citizens] is LARGER than their total budget for military.
XI Jinping is by far the number one ruler, but is backed or in league with a 'hundred' families -- the same ones that formed the clique of powerholders with Mao and ever since. 92 I hadn't heard this before, but assume others have said the same.
"Multilateral world order" when used by CHinese officials is code for China's dominance over the world's economy, trade and technology.

Basically, West/ other countries must not allow themselves to be totally dependent on China economically because they are then open to blackmail.

QUAD - military org started on Japan's initiative in 2007 I hadn't heard of [p97-98] consisting of Japan and US and Australia and India. China correctly sees it as a threat to China's ongoing expansion in the South China Sea [and Asia in general].
FOXCONN is a huge Taiwanese company that builds Apple phones and stuff *in China*.
LENOYO is a Chinese company, world's *largest* producer of laptops.
Belt & Road: CHina has been building lots of coal plants for small countries that use old outdated very polluting technology.
Author argues that CHina's traditional 'values' are not necessarily so different from western values [whereas China's officials like to argue that China and west have starkly different core values]. He sees them as: Moderation, Common Sense, Tolerance, and Individuality[huh???], 121.
Author feels a bit optimistic that Xi will go too far in repression/oppression and people will rise up. I doubt it.
I think freedom of speech tends to be very low on people's list of priorities. I think most [Chinese and others] are content if there is order, that if you work hard and earn some money, you can keep the money and buy a home or business and not have it taken away from you; if you can get your child educated and have some expectation that it will be able to work and save and have a little more than you have.
I'm not convinced people get upset about bribes and all the corruption around them, high-level and otherwise. BUT this must not go too far, must not reach the ordinary person in a way that arbitrarily takes away their property and livelihood. I always remember the loyal party comrades who are astounded the gov't takes away their home [e.g. for a dam or a development project] and in spite of their pleas does not compensate them or find them a new home. This is betrayal. Bribery is fine if it's the custom and everybody knows how much they need to pay to whom, and it is affordable.
Note, I very often had the feeling I was reading a literal translation from English. Almost as if he had read a bunch of sources/analyses in English and pulled out sentences he could use.

Door de haat en vingerdikke minachting tegenover de voormalige leider van de GOP doet de auteur af en toe wat domme uitspraken die zijn geloofwaardigheid ondermijnen. Aanvallen op aziaten kwamen na promoten van cultureel marxistische ideologieen zoals CRT, 1619 project, white privelage, positive discrimination en Blm. Niet omdat "iemand" het het "Chinavirus" noemt. Wat net zoals de spaanse griep eigenlijk geen slechte naam is. Kenny xu's boek "an inconvenient minority" behandeld het onderwerp haat tegenover aziaten zeer uitgebreid. Jammer dat de auteur zijn politiek kleur zo naar voren wou schuiven en dit op 3 punten in zijn boek zijn kritisch denken beinvloed heeft, ander had dit boek 4 sterren gekregen

Ik heb een Chinese laptop, een Lenovo. Wie niet, het is een van de bekendste merken en staat vaak bovenaan in beste-koop-onderzoeken. Na het lezen van dit boek vraag ik me toch af of ik bij de keuze van zijn opvolger niet wat politiek moet laten meespelen. China loopt voor qua technologie, en dat is een bewuste strategie van Xi Jinping. Geen doel op zich, maar een middel op weg naar de ‘Grote Wedergeboorte van de Chinese Natie’. Die natie lijkt niet op een democratie, in tegendeel. De technologie wordt óók gebruikt om iedereen, maar met name de tegenstanders van de CCP, in de gaten te houden. En de technologie wordt gebruikt om invloed te krijgen op westerse landen, om ook de Chinese visie op de samenleving, het xi-isme, te exporteren.
Het ontkoppelen van westerse en Chinese technologie is dus een noodzaak. Die samenleving is namelijk een autocratie, met de minste pers- en internetvrijheid ter wereld (in 2021), en met meer uitgaven voor de binnenlandse veiligheidsdienst dan voor de krijgsmacht. En met ambities: groot-China bevatte ooit ook delen van Japan, India, Rusland, Mongolië. Natuurlijk staat Taiwan hoog op de lijst voor inlijving. En als je ziet hoeveel invloed China nu al heeft in Afrika, Zuid-Amerika en het Midden-Oosten ….
Wat kunnen wij doen ‘om China te stoppen?’ De westerse technologie, veiligheid en waarden beschermen. Investeren in allianties. Niet met China, dat gaat niet werken. Wel de NAVO, Quad, TTP, Mensenrechtenraad, etc. De auteur hoopt dat de combinatie van externe druk van die allianties, plus interne druk vanuit de eigen bevolking, die veelal het confucianisme en taoïsme aanhangen, tot een ander politiek systeem in China zullen leiden.
Waarschuwing
De auteur is sinoloog en leefde jarenlang in China. We moeten zijn duiding van de ambities van Xi en de ontwikkelingen in de technologie, handel en mensenrechten daarom erg serieus nemen. Ik schrok van veel informatie, allemaal zaken die ik wel wist, maar nog niet eerder in een dergelijk compact betoog gecombineerd had gezien. Bepaald een deprimerend boek, wat je het liefst zou negeren. Maar het lijkt verstandig dat niet te doen. Misschien moeten we toch onze focus op handel nog eens goed overwegen, en begrijpen dat economische macht samengaat met ideologische macht. Voor bedrijven is dit een prima boek om nut en noodzaak van sancties en importbeperkingen te begrijpen én te voorspellen.

A great book, concise and powerful in its points. In a clear, structured argumentation Nordholdt takes the reader along China's foreign policy ambitions and its relation to the West. His most important point: the Chinese government is no product of Chinese culture per se, but in many ways an antithesis of the long and rich Chinese history and culture.
A great wake-up call to the West as the CCP only thinks in terms of retaining its own power.
Contrary to the subtitle the book is not focused too much on the COVID pandemic. Rather, it is used more as a lense to clarify the regime and policy preferences of China's communist party.
A great book to start with when you are interested in delving into Chinese foreign policy, history and politics. Nordholdt has an outspoken opinion that is very clearly laid out and provides further food for thought and food for further reading for more perspectives.

Scherp en genuanceerd verhaal over de politiek van Xi Jinping. Een eye opener om de gebeurtenissen van nu te zien in de context van de geschiedenis. Het is duidelijk geschreven vanuit een liefde voor de Chinese cultuur los van de communistische partij. In Europa trappen we volgens de auteur te veel in de verdeel-en-heers trucjes van China en moeten we meer samenwerken. Absolute aanrader.

Als er iets is waar je veel over leest in de media, is het wel de opkomst van China. Geen eenvoudige taak dus, om daar wat origineels aan toe te voegen. Toch slaagt dit boek daar erg goed in: heldere analyse die wordt ondersteund door feiten die lang niet altijd bij het grote publiek bekend zijn.

Een kort en effectief overzicht van de opkomst van China in de 21e eeuw, en hoe Europa moeite kan doen om deze groei in ethische banen te leiden en niet ten koste te doen gaan van de Chinese bevolking of andere landen. Schulte Nordholt is een ervaringsdeskundige die weet waar hij over praat, en hoewel ik het niet altijd met zijn wereld-economische visie eens ben presenteert hij zeer sterke maatschappelijke punten in dit boek.

Schets van de (veranderende) positie van China in de wereld, hoe China zichzelf ziet en hoe de rest van de wereld daar mee om zou kunnen gaan - als ze wil voorkomen dat China een nog dominerendere rol gaat spelen.
Wat mij aan beklemd is de verregaande technologische surveillance die China niet alleen op de eigen bevolking los laat, maar ook exporteert naar gelijkgestemde dictaturen.
