Rate this book
Read the sequel to the book Brandon Sanderson calls "an imaginative, fast-paced urban fantasy." In the wake of the battle that tore his Family apart, Zan Mardova wants nothing more than to put a stop to the centuries of hatred and war, but replacing his father as Il Capo is more difficult than Zan imagined. Old friends have become new enemies, and foreign Skilled are setting their sights on Venice, hoping to take advantage of the unrest and claim the city for themselves. Zan needs Ellie by his side more than ever, but Venice is the one place he can’t keep her safe. Zan is desperate to end the legacy of violence and bloodshed once and for all— But in becoming the person he needs to be to hold his Family together, will he lose everyone that he loves?

Fast fun read. A good build on book 1, with new twists to things we thought we knew. Love that they go beyond Venice in this book to Austria which has a soft spot in my heart. The action was fun and exciting too, with some really fun and dynamic scenes. All in all a fun read. (Too tired to think and write logically about this, but it is good. Promise.)

Note: there is one brief sex scene, though it’s not overly descriptive and does fade out pretty fast. But for that reason I’d recommend it for HS age and up.

Curious mix of magic and mafias

Haven’t these people heard of guns? Bizarre mix of magical powers that randomly don’t work too well. Quite the action hero plot for most of the book, and of course, the hero nearly dies several times, and a love story included. It’s almost difficult to keep up with the fast paced action. The book ends a bit abruptly, to lead to book 3.

A fantastic sequel with an absolutely ballistic set-piece ending. I don't know when last I got through a book this quick. An absorbing thrill ride!
