Liam is the fourth book in the ‘Love at the Haven’ series. It stars Liam, Dom at the Haven Hotel and a personal gym trainer, and Felix, a famous model. It’s told in first person from both Liam and Felix’s povs.
I’ve read quite a few books in this series and I was looking forward to this one. The blurb is accurate and made this story sound interesting. Sadly, I don’t think it’s quite up to the other books. This contains light BDSM, but don’t be turned off by that.
In books with BDSM, I expect there to be rules and those would be stated at the beginning of the people playing together. When Liam meets Felix, he starts to explain that Liam is in charge and not to touch any of the toys in the room. But instead, Felix says since he’s the customer he’s in charge and can call the shots. This is where the story turned on its head, annoyed me, and it never recovered. Once they got to the room, Felix and Liam should have sat down and discussed what they wanted. If Felix wanted Liam to be a sub so Felix could learn about being a Dom, that should have been stated. Instead, Felix just started winging it. And since Liam was thinking with his other head, he just let Felix do it. I found it very unsettling that the two of them didn’t discuss anything and didn’t follow any rules. Just using light signals for warnings. Once the scene reached the room and Felix and BDSM went off script, I put the book down and had a difficult time picking it up again to finish reading it. I ended up reading one chapter before setting it down again, or reading another book I picked up because this story bothered me too much on how Liam and Felix had no rules for their BDSM relationship.
What bothered me also, was that Felix was all about Felix, he was selfish. He seemed to want the companionship so he bought Liam’s time as a personal trainer and a sub. He wanted Liam to express his emotions, but Felix didn’t. He didn’t see how uncomfortable Liam was at times but only cared about how strong Liam’s submission made Felix feel. He was an extremely selfish person. Liam was confused, but his concerns and worries are clear in the story. Both Felix and Liam were both messes, not knowing what they wanted from each other, other than sex. Their pairing didn’t work for me and I couldn’t see them as a couple.
I found Liam to be the most disappointing of the books I’ve read in this series so far. I really didn’t like how the BDSM negotiations and rules were ignored. I didn’t like Felix and how he wasn’t good at handling Liam’s vulnerability. I couldn’t believe in them as a couple. The fact that I had to constantly put the book down after reading only a chapter at a time, told me how this story grated me. Therefore, I can only give this book, 2 Stars. I really wanted to like this one, but unfortunately, I didn’t.
