HUMANITY THOUGHT THEY COULD RUN. THEY WERE WRONG. In the 23rd century, a series of unprovoked attacks from an unseen alien power render Earth uninhabitable. A fraction of humanity make a desperate escape in an enormous ship known as the Gaea Ark. They rush across the stars on a treacherous journey to a new home on humanity's farthest colony. It's the ultimate First Contact gone wrong ... and it's not over yet. As enemies—alien and otherwise—attack the ship, divisions within threaten to tear it apart. Welcome aboard the Ark , where there are as many secrets as there are survivors. It's gonna be a bumpy ride.
Absolutely loved this first book in a new series by two fabulous writers. So many twists and questions as to how humanity can survive. I was completely hooked on everything that happened and can’t wait to read the next book.
This is a great beginning to a promising new series. An unseen alien presence creates space portals through which meteors are rained down on the Earth, seeking to completely annihilate it. Aion Scientific, the world’s largest, most powerful corporation, had designed and built the first permanent settlement outside the solar system on the far-distant planet Rasala several generations ago. The colony had flourished and now has a stable ecosystem with a population of about 10,000. To eventually transfer large numbers of humans, Aion planned to build a fleet and had already finished a gigantic spaceship, the Gaea Ark, to hold roughly 3 million people. When the attack started, they quickly finished their loading and took off, leaving the remaining billions to face extinction. The Ark was accompanied by several hundred military ships. They travelled in hypersleep for 20 years at FTL speeds, then woke everyone to convert power to sub-light speed in the Rasala system for about 3 years. The story begins with about a month remaining in their voyage.
Reginald Brown, Aion’s CEO, was dying of cancer, so he appointed his son, Reg Brown, Jr., to replace him for the voyage. The upper, more posh accommodations housed the corporation’s offices and living quarters for their staff. The lower levels of the ship housed the rest of the passengers in dreary, cramped quarters. They had been chosen only by lottery, without regard to needed skills or experience, and were quickly subverted by the organized criminal gang, the Kizoku, turning the area into slums and looking to take over the ship. Their military escort was tired of baby-sitting the Ark, and wanted to run the operation. Reg counted on support from Gideon Patel, his security chief, and Maddox, his ex-Special Forces assistant and hard-nosed bodyguard, to keep the peace, but they were sadly outnumbered by either entity, and were in deep yogurt if the two decided to work together. Then, the fleet was attacked by the “Emergers”, the aliens that wanted to annihilate the humans. The attack was thwarted, but at a great cost to the military ships. It was learned that the aliens had been alerted to human existence by Aion’s time travel tests, and that the attackers may be an advanced species of intelligent robots.
This story starts somewhat slowly, due to the introduction of so many characters and background events, but it quickly got up to speed, pulled me in and kept me reading to finish it in one sitting. It is well-written, with powerful characters and descriptions that made me feel I was right there in the ship with them. I have enjoyed over three dozen books by these great authors, separately and together, and this is another winner! I received an ARC – this review is my honest opinion – I highly recommend it. I bought a copy to support this outstanding team, and am eager to read the rest of this promising series.
They did it again. Thus starts another new series set in space with some action, a bit of mystery, a hint of suspense, and humanity at its low. The story starts as the Ark with the remaining bits of humans from Earth are set on its final path to New Earth but of course things are not all rosy. It just drew me in from the beginning as usual and kept me reading in one sitting as I got to meet all the main characters and a bit of their back story. And what a cast we have as the story unfolds. So much is ready to blow with all the competition that the story is so addicting it made me sigh and giggle and totally see what was going on and understand how it all got to this point until the surprises popped up. Now I need the next book to see what is revealed next and it’s impacts.
Received as an ARC, this is an honest review. With the world coming to its end by fiery rocks raining down, humanity has a way out: the Gaea Ark... housing survivors as the ship travels across the stars to a new world to call home. But even aboard the Ark, humanity still hold the deadly vices that plagued them on their destroyed home. It's a bizarre and brutal murder of a worker serving aboard the ship that Gideon finds himself solving, balancing the unique power struggle that controls the ship. The truth surrounding the death is a labyrinthine journey that begins this wicked series as humanity is determined to survive in the sea of stars. Highly recommended.
Another new series from the prolific duo of James and Young, and it intrigues from the start. There are many different elements, personalities and all the action filled drama one expects from this tandem. There are multiple timelines to the story, and it does jump around a bit...but it will be interesting to see all the threads weave together and see where they go....so much potential. The characters are interesting, as is the tension between the different factions, the setting is very detailed and so many mysteries to unfold. I received an ARC and this is my voluntary review.
There's a lot of plot threads in this one. Some are definitely interesting enough to overcome the trite and tired cliche of big business ruling from the shadows. Everyone must know by now they do and to be reminded of it is boring. Even the military machine is represented. However, there is sufficient story along with that to hold one's interest. I will certainly be reading the next installment, if only to discover the outcome of a couple of isolated yet unlikely heroes.
Not a bad read, not my type of read but I read it all the way through to the end and not to bad. It was a good story and well written that people may enjoy. Perhaps book 2 would be more to my liking but having not been gripped by book 1 I won't be going for book two. I will be looking to see what else is written by these two as the style of writing and the general story was good. Keep up the good work I will be looking to see what else you have written
Joshua can not write anything except super books. The writing, battles, characters and super plots make his books the best. Always a mix of on ship and outer space battles plus the characters are always fleshed out so you get to know them. The plot in Lost Earth is excellent. In this book the ship is also a big part of the story.
Definitely an intriguing start to a new series. The flashbacks release helped cement what is happening and what it means and why they're going through what they are. Well written, good grammar. If you're looking for something to read definitely give it a shot.
Not a stand alone book, multiple situations brought up by the author, not one thing resolved in this book. Story somewhat lack luster and I have no desire to read book II
Not what I would call on of Joshua's best books. I think it would have been more interesting if it had just interesting if it had just involved crime, adding the aliens into the mix just complicates it. Not sure yet if I will read the follow ups
More fiction than science. Minimal character development, internal inconsistencies, and as a bonus, the end of the earth...and the last remnants of humanity
Starts out kinda of standard but shifts to interesting quickly. Reading next book and love this author!
Great author and interesting series. Worth getting through the basic beginning to get to the interesting stuff. Bout to start book two so keep ya posted!
