"It is better to err acting than to do nothing for fear of erring. Without initiative there is no guerilla warfare."

Carlos Marighella
24 books28 followersCarlos Marighella was a Brazilian politician, writer, and Marxist-Leninist militant. He was a key figure in the armed resistance against Brazil's military dictatorship and founded the Ação Libertadora Nacional (ALN), an urban guerrilla group responsible for bank robberies, kidnappings, and other militant actions. Critical of nonviolent resistance, he advocated for armed struggle and wrote the Minimanual of the Urban Guerrilla, a widely circulated revolutionary text.
Targeted by the authorities, Marighella was ambushed and killed by police in 1969. His legacy remains controversial—while some view him as a revolutionary hero, others see him as a terrorist. His life has been depicted in literature and film, most notably in the 2019 movie Marighella, directed by Wagner Moura.

A questão básica na preparação técnica do guerrilheiro urbano é o manejo de armas, tais como a metralhadora, o revólver automático, FAL, vários tipos de escopetas, carabinas, morteiros, bazucas, etc.
Aprender a fazer e construir armas, preparar bombas Molotov, granadas, minas, artefatos destrutivos caseiros, como destruir pontes, e destruir trilhos de trem são conhecimentos indispensáveis a preparação técnica do guerrilheiro
Cada grupo de tiro das guerrilhas urbanas tem que ter uma metralhadora manejada por um bom atirador.
Os coquetéis Molotov, gasolina e artefatos caseiros tais como caixas de tubos e latas, bombas de fumaça, minas, explosivos convencionais tais como dinamite e cloreto de potássio, explosivos plásticos, cápsulas de gelatina, e munições de todo tipo são necessários para a missão do guerrilheiro urbano.
a. Um exemplo disto foi a inovação feita pelos guerrilheiros urbanos no Brasil quando introduziram o uso da metralhadora nos ataques a bancos.
Para evitar sua própria extinção, o guerrilheiro urbano tem que atirar primeiro e não pode errar em seu disparo.

função é desgastar, desmoralizar, e distrair as forças inimigas, permitindo o desenvolvimento e sobrevivência da guerrilha rural que esta destinada a um papel decisivo na guerra revolucionária
O inimigo não tem nenhuma forma de lutar contra a surpresa e se torna confuso ou é destruído.
Para assegurar a mobilidade e a velocidade...
a. mecânicos;
b. conhecimento do terreno;
c. uma ruptura ou suspensão das comunicações e transportes do inimigo;
d. armamento leve.
a. interceptar de propósito a polícia com outros veículos...
b. obstruir a estrada...
c. colocar minas caseiras no caminho da polícia, utilizar gasolina, ou jogar bombas
Molotov para incendiar seus veículos;
d. disparar uma rajada de balas de metralhadora ou armas tais como a FAL contra o
motor e pneus dos veículos envolvidos na perseguição.
A grande desvantagem do policial montado é que se apresenta ao guerrilheiro urbano como dois alvos excelentes:o cavalo e seu cavaleiro.
helicóptero...Além disso, quando tenta voar a baixas alturas torna-se extremadamente vulnerável ao fogo do guerrilheiro urbano.
Por sua parte os guerrilheiros urbanos não devem de evitar sua responsabilidade - uma vez que sabem quem é o espião ou informante - de liquidá-lo.
a. ameaçar o triângulo no qual os sistemas de dominação do estado brasileiro e norte-americano são mantidos no Brasil, um triângulo cujos pontos são Rio, São Paulo,e Belo Horizonte

whatever your purpose, this exists to reaffirm sentiments of revolution and guerilla militancy. the will to kill all police, fight repression, and expropriate resources. to become vigilant. improve your survival tactics. practice patience. demonstrate decisiveness. harness hope in your discipline. a conviction to develop knowledge and proficiency in guns, makeshift medicine, and explosives. for the guerilla, offensive attack and rapid retreat become self preservation.
i've seen changes in my imagination, my habits, the overarching purpose i wish to serve. i let my environment judge and shape what i should take from this handbook. any notes taken should be inclusive of people living with disabilities as well as marginalized genders, and take into account the newer threats to be faced.
the minutiae of centers to target, discretion praxis and stratagem is something to condition yourself to internalizing over time but it reads naturally. urban revolutions allowing ones in rural areas to cascade, raiding police vans before destroying them, and perceiving jails and prisons as inevitable sites of revolution seem like understated observations that begin to take precedence.
for as much violence is theorized, it's always made clear to impede enemy movement and munitions without harming citizenry, as armed action should only be directed against the exploitative class that is the rich and wealthy.
in the face of lipservice cries like “defund the police” or "#endsars”, governments have no alternative but to intensify their repression. whether that's gassing protestors, shooting projectiles at children or turning off cameras before massacring their own people.
even for someone familiar with organizing, rigorously recruiting for counterintelligence espionage services against state attempts at infiltration and keeping fragmented, international organizations mobilized and independently informed, are invaluable points to keep in mind that when ignored manage to plague even the most tight knit orgs.
for as much as nonBlack people and neoliberals convince themselves of “harm reduction”, them and their favorite celebrities continue to participate in perpetuating electoral facades and installing imperialist puppets that continue to torment the marginalized people in our own countries, if not outside said borders.
antiBlackness via the death and suffering of Black people will always be trivialized as topic for nonBlack consumption because it is how they manage to survive in this world - with our labor and on our backs, all the while denying us "humanity" as well as our indigeneity. nonBlack people, especially whites, have no revolutionary potential - and even if they did, their antiBlackness would persist. what incentive do they have to dissolve the oppressive system they thrive and feed upon?
one has to imagine a better reality than this. to acknowledge, that for a revolution now or in the next 100 years (if a new world will even be worth fighting for by then) - Black people should be ready. this means doing our best to create a culture of revolution and mutual aid within our communities. building autonomous zones, strengthening ourselves on all metaphysical fronts, bolstering our skills. to ensure the survival of this cause beyond ourselves - we must divorce from the poisonous frameworks and crumbling constructs white supremacy has instilled in and built around us.

اصلا خودم هم نمی دونم چرا این کتاب رو خوندم .
شاید می خواستم یه جورایی بهش احترام بزارم صرفا ، برای اینکه ناراحت نشه از این که خونده نمی شه .
خیلی جالب بود ، شب که داشتم بر می گشتم خونه اینو توی یه کارتن کتاب کنار سطل زباله پیدا کردم . نسخه فارسی و چاپ چاپ خونه های زیر زمینی چریک های فدایی خلق ایران !!!
آره ، خودم هم فکر می کنم عتیقه پیدا کردم . اول به خودم گفتم پسر این از اون کتاب هاییه که یه زمانی مردم به خاطر داشتنش می رفتن زندان . خوب این جذاب ترش می کرد واقعا .
همین شد که خوندمش .
کتاب رو آقای کارلوس ماریگلا در ژوئن 1969 نوشته و این قدمت 50 ساله باعث می شه که دیگه ارزش تاکتیکی و عملیاتی نداشته باشه . همونطور هم که از اسمش پیداست دستورالعمل جنگ چریکی شهریه و برای انقلابیون برزیلی که علیه دیکتاتوری و امپریالیزم آمریکای شمالی می جنگیدن نوشته شده . به
نظرم الآن کاربرد خاصی نداره و بحث کردن راجع بهش هم بی فایده ست .

Very interesting outline of urban guerilla warfare. As much specific as vague at the same time so it can be read and understood by everyone. The way the brazillian junta handled the PCB and Marighella showed how dangerous his activities and ideas were to the imperialist ruling class. May he rest in peace.

Read this and you can understand the terrorists goal. It's really as simple as that. Written by a failed revolutionary, but includes a philosophy you can see being used by all groups, religious and political, up till today.

Me preparando pro apocalipse

Non è facile parlare di un libro del genere. Innanzitutto, perché 4 stelle? Soprattutto per un'opera senza alcuna pretesa o valore letterario né, per fortuna, attualità, almeno in questa parte del mondo.
Ero convinto di trovarmi di fronte ad un'opera ancora più fanatica ed esaltata, visto l'insurrezionalismo non condivisibile di fondo. Ma bisogna tenere anche conto di una cosa, ovvero che il libro è stato scritto nel peggior momento della storia del Brasile, quando la dittatura militare era all'apice e dissidenti venivano torturati ogni giorno e una grave crisi economia funestava il paese. Da questo punto di vista questo piccolo manuale si dimostra un documento di grande valore storico che ricorda a cosa era disposta ad arrivare una parte della popolazione che viveva sotto dittatura. Con ciò ovviamente non condividendo le idee insurrezionaliste di Marighella, le quali gli valsero l'allontanamento dal Partito Comunista Brasiliano né tantomeno il modus operandi di portare avanti le proprie idee. Ero convinto di trovarmi di fronte ad un'opera ancora più fanatica ed esaltata, visto l'insurrezionalismo non condivisibile di fondo. Ma bisogna tenere anche conto di una cosa, ovvero che il libro è stato scritto nel peggior momento della storia del Brasile, quando la dittatura militare era all'apice e dissidenti venivano torturati ogni giorno e una grave crisi economia funestava il paese. Da questo punto di vista questo piccolo manuale si dimostra un documento di grande valore storico che ricorda a cosa era disposta ad arrivare una parte della popolazione che viveva sotto dittatura. Con ciò ovviamente non condividendo le idee insurrezionaliste di Marighella, le quali gli valsero l'allontanamento dal Partito Comunista Brasiliano né tantomeno il modus operandi di portare avanti le proprie idee. Some assertions are still accurate just piss off the government that much, that the government will be become more oppressive against the population. That will turn against the government creating more enemies. December 12, 2023I accidentally ended up with this ‘problematic’ book while online shopping for a book about ‘guerrilla urbanism’; -that’s when neighbours organise to fix their own suburbs instead of sitting around waiting for council to do it- so you can imagine my bafflement when I opened the envelope and found a picture of a AK47 on the cover of my ‘urban planning’ book.
So I read about the context of the minimanual. It turns out that it’s a manual for starting running and managing the logistics of (and I kid you not) a city terrorist cell. It proposed the idea of moving guerrillas to the city rather than the economically negligible jungle turf where it had been til then. The manual became influential since its publication as the ABC of guerrilla tactics.
My thoughts throughout this book was a deep sense of gratitude that I live in a safe country that one almost takes for granted. Armed resistance to tyranny is in theory noble and virtuous but one hopes they would never in a position to consider it in the first place. I also came out of this minimanual with a strengthened conviction in pacifism and strict gun control.
As for the tactics discussed in this book, it shows that the goal of the guerrilla is simpler than the goal of the tyrants. As the tyrants goal is to erase an ideology and maintain total control, while all the resistance has to do is cause trouble and be a nuisance.

Книга могла быть полезна для того, чтобы революционная молодежь, жаждущая с криком Ура жертвовать жизнью, приносила хоть какую-то пользу делу революции. Но в целом на 90% состоит из пропаганды, а на 10% - из банальных советов, которые по умолчанию соотносятся с любой партизанской борьбой. Многие советы просто сводятся к тому, что партизан должен быть умнее и сильнее, чем солдаты и полиция.

"This effectively turns the urban guerrilla into a sort of James Bond figure, half secret agent half Carbonari, and the clear and obvious logistical impossibility of having members with all these skills, considering that each action group was meant to have 5 members, who are not aware of the other members, and that they are mostly drawn from the civilian population. So we see that the "manual" has a much more propagandistic aim, a sort of reconstruction of the romantic revolutionary, of the extremely well studied and morally pure putschist, a Blanqui for a new generation. But even when one considers this, Marighella makes errors and omissions that are completely incomprehensible for an experienced commander of paramilitary operations. He says that helicopters are useless for pursuing guerrillas, since they have difficulty landing in the urban fabric, as if their mission was capture and not recon. He suggests that police pursuits could be paralyzed with traffic jams, mines, switched traffic signs, and machine-gunning tires, when each of these operations would require its own logistical mobilization, and in fact often times would require a bigger logistical mobilization than the actual assault for which they're being pursued. There is not a single lesson in the entire book about hiding, even though this is essential for any guerrilla conflict."
Attached to this note is a historical footnote, which is also worth noting:
"When the mini-manual began to circulate, the ALN had already lost two commanders of its Armed Tactical Group - the highest rank in the organization's military hierarchy - because of recklessness and insecure devices. Marighella himself coded his meeting points in writing, despite warning to never do that in the manual, and one of these notes said: "d2 2000 RCVxAvRe". The incompetent Paulista police could not decipher it but whoever had to remember a meeting on Day 2, at 8 pm, at the Rua of Capote Valente and Rebouças Avenues, probably noticed that Marighella was not a very creative cryptographer"
Really I could go into detail into the mistakes of this manual but they are of a fundamental strategic nature. Get Armed Insurrection, the Comintern manual from 1928, instead.

Devia chamar: Manual do bandido e assassino
Leitura importante para quem quer entender a mente de um revolucionário e o que muitos dos revolucionários usam como exemplo.
No começo da leitura eu estava copiando as frases absurdas para colocar na minha resenha, mas depois de um tempo vi que a resenha ficaria enorme devido a quantidade de absurdos.
O que difere o "Guerrilheiro" do livro de um bandido/assassino comum é que ele o autor julga que os fins justificam os meios. Fins, inclusive, que ele nem mesmo cita, ele só ensina como matar, roubar e assassinar de forma bem técnica e com armas descritas em mínimos detalhes. Ou seja, é bandido mesmo. Como se não fosse o suficiente e para acalmar sua própria mente, ele ainda diz como que depois de matar alguém é possível fazer propaganda para as testemunhas dos assassinatos, logo após o ato. Bem doentio mesmo.
Aqueles que ainda acreditem que não existe outra forma revolução que não a violência, lembre que Gandhi fez uma revolução na India, que era dominada e massacrada pelo Reino Unido, usando de técnicas de não violência. Gandhi usava de meios como o não pagamento de impostos abusivos, conscientização e boicote. Ao contrário de Marighella que ensina com que arma o estrago é maior.
Ensinar como matar um pai ou mãe de família, que trabalha no banco por achar que o banco não esta dentro do que você acha correto não é revolução para a população, é doença!
Qualquer pessoa que não esteja louco na causa de revolução sem nem mesmo saber o que quer revolucionar, vai perceber que esse livro é um absurdo. Eu até entendo que todos nós temos a utopia de viver em um mundo melhor, mas as pessoas de bem não veem sangue como uma forma de chegar lá.
Neste manual é possível ver o quanto a vida do povo em si é nada diante da revolução, sendo que ironicamente, é mencionado é feita pelo povo e para o povo.

Some of this is still relevant today, some of it is not relevant.
Keep in mind he wrote this in 1969 when pistol caliber submachine guns were a fine weapon for urban warfare and virtually no regime security forces wore even soft body armor.
In an era where all regime security forces wear at least soft body armor, a submachine gun is essentially useless, especially when compared to a PDW or SBR length AR-15 type rifle or any weapon chambered for a centerfire rifle cartridge.
By the way, in the 1960s my insurgency weapon of choice for urban insurgency would have been an M1a1 Carbine that is the paratrooper M1 Carbine with a folding stock, or an M2 carbine with a folding stock. I would have been content with an Uzi or an MP5 but I would have preferred the M1 Carbine. The 30 carbine round is superior to any SMG pistol caliber round of the 1960s.
For rural based guerilla warfare my insurgency weapon of choice in the 1960s would have been the Remington 700, followed by the Winchester Model 70, followed by the M21, followed by the M1 Garand D, note those are all scoped precision rifle systems.
The author talks about using shotguns and SMGs to "snipe" which suggests he really doesn't understand or know what sniping is or what it entails.
The book is decent in terms of basic timeless principles for armed urban resistance but it would need to be seriously updated for the modern era with modern technology.

An intriguing historical document. I know very little about the revolutionary period under the Brazilian military dictatorship, but I have been trying to learn more. I found this to be a good entry point into better understanding the militant Brazilian left during this period. I can't comment on the efficacy of Marighella's military theories. The interview of ex-prisoners included at the end of the edition I read was especially enlightening. It was interesting to learn more about how participants in the guerrilla movement thought about their actions. I would love to read a more holistic history of the Brazilian military government, as well as the conditions that led to the failure of the armed revolution.

Pelo que li nesse manual do guerrilheiro urbano do Marighella provavelmente não faria parte dessa revolução por não ter ódio suficiente no coração. Claro que há muitas coisas no texto que não concordo, mas também sei que não há como lutar contra uma ditadura com bandeiras de paz e conversas quando o exército e a polícia atacam com armas e torturas. Então o texto do Marighella mostra que há uma tentativa de lutar de igual para igual. Mesmo o oponente sendo mais forte.
O texto é bastante repetitivo. Mas deixa claro qual a função do guerrilheiro na luta pela libertação do país de um governo ditatorial e imperialismo americano.
Espero que eu nunca precise usar esses ensinamentos, mas caso for necessário, até ódio no coração a gente coloca.

O livro é como um verdadeiro manual de instruções. Explica como funcionaria a guerrilha perfeita, do ponto de vista do autor. Há, ao meu ver, um erro grosseiro de leitura conjuntural, além de uma superexpectativa criada em relação ao potencial da guerrilha urbana naquele momento. É uma leitura interessante, mas um pouco repetitiva. Além disso, dá a impressão que só poderia ser guerrilheiro urbano o sujeito que fosse praticamente um super-homem. Enfim, vale a leitura pelo ponto de vista de alguém que, literalmente, lutou e deu a vida contra a ditadura militar, que oprimia o povo e deixou diversos traumas que percebemos até hoje. Por outro lado, como livro, é cansativo, apesar de curto.

September 1, 2025trata-se de um puro manual militar por uns 95% do livro e, por isso, é chatíssimo de ler. o que há de política apresenta uma análise completamente equivocada da conjuntura da época, o que só pode ser explicado por um de dois fatores: ou foi escrito para fins de propaganda, o que é desastroso em um manual destinado a formar guerrilheros ou é expressão genuína da análise dos líderes da resistência armada na época, a qual, nesse caso, estaria invariavelmente condenada ao fracasso.
