When Taylor Ewell invents a revolutionary propulsion system, her excitement quickly transforms into a crippling paranoia. Would someone try to stop her? For advice, she decides to contact an old friend from college, a talented and notorious lawyer. While they secretly recruit a team to develop the new technology, unforeseen circumstances destroy their perception of the world. Not only must they dodge corrupt agents, they also capture the attention of interdimensional creatures of frightening intelligence.
Their situation becomes even more complex after meeting Freddy Carlson, a young man with valuable connections but haunted by strange visions. When an insurmountable nightmare confronts a member of the group, Freddy acquires seemingly supernatural assistance to intervene. But his new talents come at a heavy price, and they soon become pawns in the spiritual battle for the state of humanity.
This is the first novel in the Silent Subversion saga. The story continues as Taylor and her friends attempt to take the technology to an entirely new level.
Authors like Stephen R. Donaldson, Douglas Adams, and Glen Cook transported Hyrum through a rough childhood. Science fiction and fantasy were not just entertaining but also emotionally resonant and deeply therapeutic.
Along the way, he earned degrees in chemistry and chemical engineering, completed a master’s thesis on plasma processing, and spent 18 years at a Taiwanese semiconductor company. He now works in a completely different field, making EV batteries for a Korean firm.
Although he integrates a broad scientific background into his writing, it’s always the human element that matters most. Every life is a story, and he enjoys bringing a new story to life.
Hyrum now lives in Kentucky with his wife and kids. He’s always hunting for a good café, a punchier sentence, and a reason to reread The Gap series. But with so many books on his waiting list, he probably never will.
Silent Subversion is not my usual reading fare, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is difficult to classify with just one genre. While it is mostly science fiction, there are also elements of drama and mystery. Silent Subversion encourages the reader to look behind the curtain and see what the wizard is really up to through social commentary and religious allegory. I would recommend this book for a more mature audience.
First of all thank you to Goodreads Giveaway and to Hyrum E. Jones for the signed copy :)
Unfortunately it took me a lot of time to get into the book - BUT not because of the story but because I didn't have time to sit down and read (such a sad time!). So when I finally found the time I.COULDN'T.STOP! such a GREAT book!
It's difficult to sort Silent Subversion I to a genre as it is Mystery and Sci-Fi in one :)
The book is split in parts and the chapters are always from another characters perspective.
I will try to introduce the (main) characters without giving away a lot (so don't be mad if the explanation is short ^^)
Taylor : the lovable inventor (such a fun character especially with Doroteo lol) Gerald : the head in the clouds lawyer ( he is great - everyone should want a Gerald in their life!) Cesar : the Mexican Friend from Gerald (fantastic backstory!!) Freddy : the character with the biggest change (at first I was skeptical about him but in the end LOVED him) Sadi : introduced completely a little bit later in the story (really hard to say something about her without giving to much away :) ) oohhhh and I almost forgot John : the FBI agent - kind of annoying - kind of great - I don't know he was getting on my nerves but I felt bad for him a little bit :D
I don't want to write too much about the book itself as it is difficult to put this great book in a review. The story is really well written and everything is explained - you feel that Hyrum E. Jones took his time to create such a perfect story!
I would say try it for yourselves and be open to big mysteries. <3
What is important to note though is, that this is Book 1, so not all the stories come to an end :)
I think this is it for now! I can't wait to read Silent Subversion 2!!
Thank you to Hyrum Jones for sending me a copy of this book as part of a Goodreads Giveaway! It was much appreciated.
I need to be honest that I suspect this book is probably a love or hate sort of story, and I unfortunately did not like it even one bit. It took a month to get through, and it was very painful.
The story is creative and well-thought-out, but the politics and blatent, consistent anger sour the whole thing. I feel like if I had to write a synopsis for this, I'd write:
"A group of angry libertarians have an invention that promises them the ability to leave Earth to be with 'people more like them' and not 'the masses' who accept government corruption and manipulation through regulations and taxation. They experience some extra-terrestrial phenomena that adds an element of 'weird' to their goings on, and they've got an awkward relationship with the FBI."
For the record, the characters are also all annoyingly one-dimensional and one-track-minded.
I don't recommend this book for anyone who isn't from the United States or Mexico, because it really just doesn't connect to the philosophies of governance and society in many other places.
All thank you for Hyrum E. Jones and of course Goodreads for the signed copy! When i found the pack in the mail in a morning, i become so excited for read, i'm naturally attracted for Sci-Fi books, and the author made a really great job. I'm finish the book in a very fast mood, by the way i can sit and reads a lot of pages for hours. I love the way that the characters come on the storyline and the fact that every chapter starts with a quote. The story have elements of drama and i adore it! Looking forward to the next book, i become really into the plot and i really, really, can say i adore the characters Taylor, haha, and a little bit Freddy after the story progress. If you love Sci-Fi, drama and mistery, read this book! Oh, and if its not your book taste read it anyway, haha, its a good choice to come out of your confort zone of literature. And i really recommend this too for the mature readers, i think is a story complex at same time, and this is good, the author take it to heart. I'm again saying the author made a amazing job, i can't wait for the next! Yay, please a next book! And thats is a prove that won me over.
I won this in a Goodreads giveaway a while back. This is the first thing I've read by the author. This review may contain spoilers which is something I normally avoid doing.
Let me say that there are portions of this book that with some editing could have been interesting books but instead this is an everything and the kitchen sink book. We have anti government sentiment, impossible scientific break through, mind control, aliens, characters that are the worst stereotypes (racist FBI agents, dumb smart people, etc.), revenge, kidnapping, and sex trafficking. How do these things relate? Not very well. On top of this the book is longer than it needs to be and is incomplete. To give an idea of how long the book is the sequel is called Silent Submission X. To make matters worse there is no section IX in the first book. Some of the dialog feels like you're being lectured and other parts way over simplify what is going on.

Silent Subversion I is the beginning of 2 threads of what is seemingly a single large story, blending Nikola Tesla-esque technology and extraterrestrial influence. Hyrum Jones weaves his tale through the warp of his personal worldview, in the fashion of Atlas Shrugged, using a not—too-distant-future science-fiction as the weft in this tapestry. In classic American fashion, our heroes are fiercely individualistic, while their antagonists, the state and big energy, are decidedly authoritarian. Will their technology see the light of day for the betterment of all, or will entrenched interests protect their stranglehold? The story continues in Silent Subversion X.
This final installment hit me on a deeper level than I expected. The emotional weight of loss, adaptation, and hope was beautifully handled. Watching the characters evolve on a new world—and still be haunted by the past—was heartbreaking and inspiring. A truly thoughtful conclusion that lingers with you.” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
