In 2072 a worldwide disease kills nearly everyone. Civilization collapses. In the 676th year of the Dark Age that ensues, orphan boy Jack makes a precarious living in the city of Nelefer as the mysterious thief called the Shadow. At the same time, wealthy brother and sister Samyel and Mikela Moer search for a cache of gold lost shortly after the pandemic. They believe their collection of ceramic hawk statuettes hides the clues to its location. Can Jack help them find it?
Jim LeMay is originally from Missouri, the land of Mark Twain, Yogi Berra, Walter Cronkite, Edwin Hubble, Robert A. Heinlein and many other worthies. He has lived in many other parts of the country so he has come to know his characters well. He has engaged in many of their vocations and avocations – homebrewer, bartender, waiter, land surveyor, civil engineer, land developer – and in some they have not: author, copywriter, commercial artist and others best forgotten. Jim now calls the Denver metropolitan area home.
This is the third novel of the continuing saga that started with a much reduced population picking up the pieces following a world wide pandemic. I found the first two books quite excellent in every way from character development to p!a usability and creativity. Written in 2014, well ahead of Covid 19, the story line involves bacteria that are no longer controllable. The story unfolds from there. Sadly though, I found this 3rd book to be long drawn out & somewhat boring & not like the two previous books. Hence I gave it 3 stars.
