Stanisław Lem gilt vielen als der Science-Fiction-Autor schlechthin. Und doch ist hier noch ein ganzer literarischer Kosmos zu entdecken: Lem der Philosoph, der streitlustige Kritiker, Erfinder neuer Genres, Sprachkünstler und Romancier von Weltrang. Best of Lem versammelt Erzählungen und Kostproben sowohl der berühmten, vielfach verfilmten und millionenfach gelesenen und geliebten Bücher als auch unbekanntere, aber ebenso aufregende Glanzlichter aus den 50 Jahren Lem‘schen Schaffens. Nicht nur Fans von Philip K. Dick, Ursula K. Le Guin oder Cixin Liu kommen dabei voll auf ihre Kosten. Angesichts einer Gegenwart, die mehr und mehr von Künstlicher Intelligenz und menschlicher Dummheit geprägt zu sein scheint, ist der große Misanthrop und Utopist Lem zu seinem 100. Geburtstag unbedingt wieder neu zu lesen.

His books have been translated into 41 languages and have sold over 27 million copies. He is perhaps best known as the author of Solaris, which has twice been made into a feature film. In 1976, Theodore Sturgeon claimed that Lem was the most widely read science-fiction writer in the world.
His works explore philosophical themes; speculation on technology, the nature of intelligence, the impossibility of mutual communication and understanding, despair about human limitations and humankind's place in the universe. They are sometimes presented as fiction, but others are in the form of essays or philosophical books. Translations of his works are difficult and multiple translated versions of his works exist.
Lem became truly productive after 1956, when the de-Stalinization period led to the "Polish October", when Poland experienced an increase in freedom of speech. Between 1956 and 1968, Lem authored 17 books. His works were widely translated abroad (although mostly in the Eastern Bloc countries). In 1957 he published his first non-fiction, philosophical book, Dialogi (Dialogues), one of his two most famous philosophical texts along with Summa Technologiae (1964). The Summa is notable for being a unique analysis of prospective social, cybernetic, and biological advances. In this work, Lem discusses philosophical implications of technologies that were completely in the realm of science fiction then, but are gaining importance today—like, for instance, virtual reality and nanotechnology. Over the next few decades, he published many books, both science fiction and philosophical/futurological, although from the 1980s onwards he tended to concentrate on philosophical texts and essays.
He gained international fame for The Cyberiad, a series of humorous short stories from a mechanical universe ruled by robots, first published in English in 1974. His best-known novels include Solaris (1961), His Master's Voice (Głos pana, 1968), and the late Fiasco (Fiasko, 1987), expressing most strongly his major theme of the futility of mankind's attempts to comprehend the truly alien. Solaris was made into a film in 1972 by Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky and won a Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1972; in 2002, Steven Soderbergh directed a Hollywood remake starring George Clooney.
He was the cousin of poet Marian Hemar.

Meine Bewertung bezieht sich keinesfalls auf die Werke von Stanislaw Lem, sondern einzig und alleine auf diese Sammlung des Suhrkamp-Verlages. Als Best Of zum 100sten Geburtstag von Stanislaw Lem beworben: Kurzgeschichten und Essays gesammelt. Das klingt für einen Fan grossartig. Schliesslich will man oft auch die kürzeren Texte eines Lieblingsautoren lesen, um einen Einblick in sein gesamtes Schaffen zu erhalten.
Wer ähnlich wie ich gedacht hat, wird bald merken, dass hier etwas nicht stimmt. Bei mir war es, als der Titel "Solaris" auftauchte. "Häh? Haben die den ganzen Roman hier hineingepackt?", fragte ich mich. Und dann erkannte ich es: das gesamte Buch besteht nur aus Auszügen!
Die (...) am Anfang und am Ende einer jeden Geschichte deutete nicht, wie ich anfangs dachte, auf unvollständige Texte hin. Nein, der Suhrkamp-Verlag kam auf die glorreiche Idee, einfach einen Haufen unvollständiger Geschichten und Texte abzudrucken. Kaum ein Werk hier ist vollständig. Alles jeweils nur 10-20 Seiten aus dem Original.
Was, bitteschön, soll das? Welchen Sinn hat das?
In meinen Augen hat dieses Werk somit absolut keine Daseinsberechtigung mehr. Denn: als Fan will man das Ganze. Man hat vielleicht die Romane bereits alle gelesen und im Regal stehen. Dann würde ich aber auch gerne die Essays lesen - aber gerne den kompletten Text.
Für Einsteiger und Neugierige ist dieses Buch auch ungeeignet, da es sich auf über 500 Seiten erstreckt. Nur mal einen Blick reinwerfen - dafür ist das einfach zu viel.
Von diesem "Best of" profitiert absolut niemand. Ausser der Verlag wahrscheinlich. An enttäuschten Lesern wie mir.
Das einzig Sinnvolle an diesem Buch war das Nachwort mit einer kurzen Biographie über Leben und Werk Stanislaw Lems. Aber das war es dann auch schon. Ich rate deshalb allen: Finger weg!

Not sure how I would like the full stories, but the cut-outs made me feel at first disoriented at first and bored until, when it finally got interesting, the preview ended. Unfortunately, I bought the book hastily without realizing that it is only a collection of short passages. It spoiled my first experience with Lem, and I will never buy such collection again.
