Kyle Murphy gave into temptation. On a hot summer school night, the Southside drug dealer tossed his usual caution aside. He disobeyed a direct order from his boss. He stayed in Lakeside with Claire. He shouldn’t have. He wasn’t who Claire thought he was. He wasn’t right for her. He was dark as night. She was bright as day. Being with her was like flying so high he touched the sun. But in the end, he paid a price more dear than he ever imagined. Claire Walsh wanted Kyle. With his starry eyes and midnight hair, he was undeniably handsome. A dark, mysterious prince, he seemed to step out of the pages of a fairy tale. Kyle rescued her. He defended and protected her. The night they shared was magical. She hoped before the morning came that she might be able to change his mind about leaving. But in the end, he had to go, and his departure was more devastating than she ever imagined. But that was then. When unforeseen circumstances throw the two star crossed lovers together again, this time they meet in Kyle’s dark world. In Southside, secrets are revealed. The lines between wrong and right, past and present are blurred. Choices must be made. Battles must be fought. Hearts are tested. Risks greater than either imagined must be taken in order for both to have the ultimate reward. Will Kyle and Claire get their happy ending? Or will their hearts shatter worse than before? Breaking Her Bad is an angsty, emotional, and suspenseful story. It features an antihero and a quirky heroine that have flaws to overcome. It contains sexually explicit scenes, drug use, and bullying. If you are looking for perfect characters in a perfect world without any danger or obstacles, do not read this book. Wrong that feels so right begins on a Hot Summer School Night and concludes in Breaking Her Bad.

Breaking Her Bad is both sad and uplifting, sometimes almost at the same time. Kyle has had such a tough life, and it keeps on kicking him when he's down. Claire's life was a good one up until the time when her dad died, then she lost her home and the few friends she had, changed schools and met Kyle again. For a while, Claire and Kyle were definitely starcrossed lovers, and I loved that during that time, Claire and Missy studied Romeo and Juliet in class :) This story is definitely a love story, with a much happier ending than Romeo and Juliet. The story is also about friendship, family, and growing into the person we're meant to be. Kyle had some hard fights to get to live his life on his own terms, but he didn't have to do it alone.
Breaking Her Bad is the conclusion to Kyle and Claire's love story which began in Hot Summer School Night. There's plenty of angst, suspense, danger, secrets and sexually explicit scenes that will keep you captivated and turning the pages to see how the story unfolds.
I volunteered to review an advance reader copy of this book.
Breaking Her Bad, the second part of Kyle and Claire's story starts up right where it left off in part 1, Hot Summer School Night. Claire's family has been emotionally and financially devastated, forced to completely change their way of life. Kyle is even more broken, if that's possible and now the debt he owes seems more like a lifetime of servitude to an evil master and horribly inescapable.
When Kyle sees Claire at Southside High, he can't believe his eyes! He never thought he'd see her again, so what is she doing here? How will he able to protect her innocence from the evil elements around any given corner in this place?? Southside doesn't offer many safe or joyful moments, so those stolen glimpses at school will have to do. Claire evolved over the summer from an awkward girl into a beautiful woman but Kyle is still the anti- hero who can't risk having her light shine down on the dark world he's forced to live in, sadly, without her.
Kyle is still the flawed dark prince Claire's remembered from her secret fantasies... maybe. She is his soulmate, saviour and remembering their night together is his guilty pleasure. With so many obstacles to overcome living in this dangerous world, will they ever find a way to be way together for all to see? Fulfilling their surprising shared destiny and having the freedom to live their lives in peace, with love and music filling the air would be such a beautiful dream.
I'm not going to say more than this, to do so would spoil the fun of your own discovery. If you've read the beginning of Claire and Kyles's story, then run quickly to grab this suspenseful, swoony, sexy conclusion- a HFN, with the amazing array of characters and the twisted, jaw dropping revelations of the past meeting present day, believe me, you won't want to miss this! I'll be waiting for more to come in this cutthroat Southside High world and I was thrilled to have read an early copy of Breaking Her Bad.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I had to set this down a few times and walk away. The emotions of Claire and Kyle were overwhelming at times being teenagers in love. These teens and their friends and families are just so strong and flawed people. These teens all of them are in positions where they can go in a good direction and fulfill some dreams they never thought they could achieve. Or they can succumb to their environment. They’ve all made some new friends and brought together unlikely people and have their little family and friends and the love and protection they offer each other is amazing and heart warming. It’s refreshing reading not soo perfect people with the not so perfect lives. I’ve read several books by this author and I know she likes to drop an emotional bomb somewhere in the book and she did. I was constantly on the look out for it. It wasn’t what I was thinking it was going to be but damn it was a good one and I can’t wait for the next book and I hope some people get their punishments. I just need a box of tissues next to me and a stress ball for the next book.
Breaking Her Bad by Michelle Mankin is a work of art. She was able to blend previous books’ timelines (The Tempest Series) into Breaking Her Bad that made it just go into the superb category of Rockstar books. Throughout, there are steamy scenes full of heat between Claire and Kyle. Their lives are opposites with Claire being the “good girl” and Kyle being the screw-up drug dealer. But motives and perceptions become important. Both endured ugly labels by others, yet those labels do not define who they are on the inside. Claire and Kyle both experienced the loss of family. Each character’s family drama interlaces in such a way it doesn’t play out totally until the end of the book. Their love for music and friends impacts how Claire and Kyle heal from their emotional wounds. There are surprises, twists, and turns, while things are not what it appears to be as the story cumulates into HEA. Michelle Mankin is a master storyteller where the reader wants to remain inside the book instead of closing the last page. (This was an ARC copy in return for my honest review).
Book 2 in a duet, the continuation of Kyle and Claire’s story does not disappoint. Any lingering questions about the ending of Book 1 are answered as Claire adjusts to her new life and Kyle fights to protect her even at the expense of his heart. Add in two new best friends, some mended relationships, an attraction and love that can’t be denied and a back story just waiting to be told for a perfect summer read that will linger in your mind. Some drama and some steamy scenes complete the experience is a way readers will expect from a book about Southside.
I love the references to and glimpses of main characters from other books by Michelle (even though those stories are not needed to understand and enjoy this one). I love the development of related and totally new characters with the strong hints at other stories to come from the Southside World Michelle has created so lovingly. Hopefully this hot Summer read will lead into some cool Fall and Winter reads as well!
Left broken and battered at the end of book one, Kyle is left in more debt with his drug dealing uncle and it all comes to a screeching halt when Claire ends up being torn from the right side of the tracks and is left to attend his high school. But Kyle cannot allow anyone to see that he still loves her as that only puts a target on her back, but the connection is too strong and he cannot stay away. Danger and mayhem are waiting for them both right around the corner. But will it end in misery? Or will it only prove that love is everlasting? With more plot twists than I ever saw coming and more deep and true character connections that ultimately just made the story better and better this was a fabulous end to a beautifully written story. Shakespeare had it all wrong - true love does not end in demise and death.
I absolutely did not see that ending coming. I was preparing for the worse. I was preparing for heartbreak and the shedding of a million tears because I didn’t believe there was a way out for any of them. Life in Southside is rough. There isn’t much room for hopes and dreams, or escape. So as the story progressed and life seemed bleak, I was overjoyed with how the book ended.
I am not going into much about the story itself, but will give praise where praise is due. Mankin rocked the heck out of this book and this series. I still think more could come from it…still hoping for more will come from it. But what we have gotten so far has been absolutely amazing and worth the read. Always well written & always completely scorching…Mankin’s books own you the entire time. 5 Brilliant Stars!
Breaking Her Bad is the riveting conclusion of Kyle and Claire’s story! Their beginning took place in Hot Summer School Night which should be read before starting this story!
I was so entranced by Kyle and Claire in the first book that the second this one landed on my kindle I wasted no time starting! I read this book in one sitting! It was full of surprises and twists I didn’t see coming! I love how this is the start of a new series, a new group to love and I do love all characters involved! I can’t wait to see what comes for all of them!
Kyle and Claire though are something to just fall for! Their connection and love is admirable and I love how both transformed and grew not just through their bond but also through their friendships! Kyle became stronger and fought for what was right! Claire just shined! She grew a backbone, got stronger and didn’t back down when the world was stacked against her! Neither settled for less then they deserved and they were stronger together than apart!
Another emotionally gripping story from Mankin that is a must read!
I don't even know where to start! Kyle and Claire's story is so intense, so hot, so tortuous. I couldn't put this book down until I finished it. I really don't want to give anything away but the layers, the "circles" were so intertwined, the surprises kept coming. This story is riveting in a way I haven't come across for awhile, maybe since the Tempest series. All I can say is Michelle Mankin you've done it again, absolutely loved it. Can't wait for more!
Loved this story, Michelle Mankin definitely has become one of my favorite authors. I was engaged from the moment i read Kyle and Claire's story in Hot Summer School Nights. I love the characters Kyle and Claire. I was rooting for them from the start. I cried along with Claire in her sad moment and never felt prouder of someone who stood up to the bullies. I started this at night and couldn't put it down needless to say i did not sleep much that night. Thank you Michelle for this story can't wait to see what new stories arise from this one.
I enjoyed the first book but unfortunately I DNF this one after 50%. It dragged on and the bracelet issue came back over and over again. The last straw for me was when she went to his apartment and instead of having the conversation they needed to have, she asked why he gave her back the bracelet 😒 2.5 stars
Once I started, I couldn't put it down. Mind-blowing, meaningful conclusion to Claire and Kyle's story. A character driven love story with love overcoming all and timely themes that resonated with me: peer pressure, bullying, herd mentality, bravery, family, friendships...and of course with any Michelle Mankin book...music.
Favorite quotes: "With her, I was as free as a bird, and together we were a new song."
"I never knew a wish could come true, or that hope had feathers until I met you."

Oh my…I am in awe of how much one person’s belief in someone can change those around them. Breaking Her Bad shows how much one person’s beliefs and courage can change how those around her willingly changes their actions and their beliefs. Kyle and Missy don’t necessarily think everything will work out and everything will be ok as they believe what they were conditioned to think of themselves as being bad and how their environment shaped them. Claire chooses to believe in the good in people and that things are not always as they seem. How Claire sees and how she responds to Kyle and Missy changes the way they view themselves and wants to be worthy of those beliefs. Kyle especially knows the consequences for his actions but chose to take a chance and live knowing he will pay for the consequences for his actions when the time comes. Breaking Her Bad is also about how life finds a way to come full circle and that breaking that cycle might just be what saves everyone. Michelle Mankin, author, did a fantastic job with both No Quarter (found in Hot Summer Nights) and Breaking Her Bad. Michelle created characters that were unique, were easy to fall in love with, easy to empathize with, and were well rounded with a past and environment that helped to create characters with morals, character, and opinions (good or bad). Michelle wrote a story that showed two people who found each other and came from two very different backgrounds. Breaking Her Bad was full of secrets, drama, angst, surprises, revelations, emotions, and lots and lots of heat 🔥🌡! Claire, Kyle, Missy, Chad, Tommy, and the generation before are all characters that Michelle created with both “good” and “bad” characteristics. For example, Claire in a lot of ways was innocent and yet a little insecure and showed that she could be both a dreamer and logical. I don’t think Kyle realized that she knew exactly what was happening and she just choose to see him and their situation in one light. After Principal told her she can change to fit in or she can be the reason others changed to live up to her ideals and strive to do better than they saw themselves. Missy and Kyle both wanted to be the person Claire saw and not what they had been in the past. Kyle thought he knew of the consequences and decided to accept them and to make Claire happy for as long as he could. I love all the different messages and ideas that Michelle’s story brings to light. I highly recommend Michelle as an author and the duet No Quarter and Breaking Her Bad. I will definitely be reading more books from Michelle and will also hope that Michelle will write a story for Missy and Chad and find someone for Tommy. Happy reading 📖!!
This story starts at Hot Summer School Nights so please read that one first. Kyle the bad boy and Claire are now attending the same school and they form a band. This is a very angsty book, with a lot of family and friendship values, with backgrounds that will bring each character to develop on their own. It's very emotional yet the end is brilliant! The emotional rollercoaster you will find yourself in will be superb, and you won't be able to stop reading until the end. I love Michelle Mankin's books and this story is one of her best works yet.
This isn't a nice simple easy happy ending read. This is an emotional investment. To really understand Kyle and Claire you need to have read the first half of their story in Hot Summer School Nights. The earlier book sets the scene and establishes their connection while Breaking Her Bad takes everything up a level.
Claire is the studious and music loving girl recovering from the loss of her Dad and of Kyle at the end of the first book. Kyle is the life-hardened drug dealer forced into the servitude of the dark shadow over the story Martin Skellin (who plays a part in the Tempest world as he is involved with Lace). Life brings them together at the wrong side of the tracks high school and they have to forge forward either as lovers or as strangers. This book is the angsty but addictive journey of how these two find their way back together.
I adored Kyle's protective, soft side. He cared so deeply for his Uncle and always looks out for Claire even when she doesnt realise it. The friendships that develop through the book, both for Kyle and for Claire, are as important as the main romance. Just as this new generation of musicians and friends form a new way out of Southside and a new hope for the previous generation. The interconnectivity of the characters within the story and with the Tempest rockstar world is gripping and fun to read. If you love Michelle's interwoven rockstar worlds you will love how Breaking Her Bad name checks those bands and becomes part of the fabric of that world.
The steamy scenes are poignant, heated and at their core very loving and emotional. These two are bonded on such a beautiful level. I would love to hear more from them and their part of this rockstar world in the future.
I knew before I started this book that it was going to be a great love story and as expected Michelle Mankin did not disappoint. I keep thinking that her writing and story-telling cannot possibly get any better but it does.
Breaking Her Bad picks up where Hot Summer School Nights left off. This is book 2 in the No Quarter series which is a spin off from the Tempest Series. Kyle Murphy is an 18 year old Drug dealer at Southside High, he is quiet, has an intense personality and has secrets that only a few people are aware of. After spending a magical night with Kyle, Claire Walsh had to let go of the man of her dreams and when she couldn’t feel worse life decided to show her that it can get worse before it gets better.
Kyle and Claire have an intense attraction to each other and as much as Kyle tries to avoid it and the danger of anyone finding out how he truly feels about Claire she has other plans and her plans include Kyle.
Their attraction It isn't straightforward and not without its hiccups but it is a journey as a reader you NEED in your life! Breaking Her Bad is an absolutely fantastic read, it would be best if you read Hot Summer School Nights first but you can start with Breaking Her Bad and will not get lost.
I recommend this book for all the reasons listed above but also because Michelle Mankin is such a fantastic storyteller, this book has so much emotion in the written words, I stayed up way past when I should have been sleeping to finish this book, it was that good.
This book starts off where Hot Summer Nights ends. Claire and Kyle's story continues in this book. I received an ARC for my honest opinion.
These books are a bit different from Michelle's normal rock star books and I can honestly say that I am LOVING it! Claire comes from Lakeside, which is the side that comes from money. Kyle is from Southside, which is the opposite side, where you can get find yourself in danger. Claire is the goody two shoes and Kyle is the drug dealer. Kyle is told to "deal" at Lakeside, where he meets and falls for Claire. They share an incredible night together, but something tragic happens to both of them. Fast forward, Claire ends up living in Southside and attends her senior year at Southside High where everything happens.
There are some interesting twists in the book that I did not expect, however, fit so well in this book. I don't want to post any spoilers, but the past has a way of making change happen. This is what we find out in this book.
I especially love Claire's character development in this book. How she changes from when we first meet her in Hot Summer Nights. Kyle is a product of circumstance. You think, drug dealer and you think criminal, however there's more to his story. Absolutely LOVED the minor characters in this book too and I hope that Michelle will write their stories as well.
Give this book a chance and you won't regret it, but make sure you read Hot Summer Nights before you read this!
Breaking her Bad (No Quarter book 2) picks up where Hot Summer School Night (No Quarter book 1) left off in the journey of Kyle and Claire.
Claire is now living with her Aunt & mother back in Southside and attending Southside high, a far cry from the private school she was used to.
I loved watching Claire navigate the social structure of the HS, while really growing and becoming a strong, independent person. Her BFF Missy, is a fantastic supporting character, and I’m hoping will have her own story one day.
Meanwhile, Kyle is struggling with keeping Claire at a distance to keep her safe and away from his world and actively protecting her while being drawn in to her orbit.
This book is fast-paced, has tons of action, lots of plot twists, and the HEA Kyle & Claire deserve.
We also see an expanded cast of characters in this sequel. We learn of the MANY connections between the young characters and the parents.
This is the kind of book where you can’t ignore any detail that Michelle writes, as it may tie the story together later in the book.
Also, if you haven’t read Michelle’s Tempest series, I’d strongly advise you to do so, as the storylines both originate in the same seedy neighborhood.
I absolutely loved this series and would highly recommend!
Yet another book by Michelle Mankin that has drawn me in, tied me up in knots and then spat me out, expecting me to just get on with my life! As with most of Ms Mankins books, I have found myself completely invested in Breaking her Bad and Kyle and Claire’s story. The ending of Book 1 Hot Summer School Night set the premise for book 2, and boy I feel like I’ve been put through the ringer!
Initially in book 1 I found Kyle hard to like, probably left over from my Tempest Days and the fact he’s a drug dealer. However I couldn’t hold onto that for long. Getting to know the character and seeing such a different side to him, understanding his backstory and the heartbreak of his life, I found myself drawn in and was soon cheering him on from the sidelines. It was not hard to see how Claire fell under his spell.
This is not a light hearted read. I’m not sure any story coming out of Southside can be. Be prepared for a story that is full of angst and emotion. Not forgetting great sex scenes too. This story will affect your emotions, so be prepared. This is a true love story, but with a dramatic story arc. Beautifully written by this author as always. I’m so happy I uncovered her books. You will not be disappointed.
Breaking Her Bad, the sequel to Hot Summer School Night, is the continuation of Claire and Kyle's story. The story picks up with Claire, who is sad and reeling from the death of her beloved father and forced to relocate from swanky Lakeside, to seedy Southside. Little does she know, Kyle is here. Once she sees Kyle, she hopes to rekindle their relationship. But Kyle has other ideas! He's had a hard life, and isn't what Claire thinks he is. As Claire and Kyle navigate their feelings, they deal with some really hard issues. But can Kyle believe in Claire's hope for their future? Dare he? As the story progresses, so many secrets and surprising twists are revealed, that will totally shock you! Well played Michelle Mankin, well played! This story will leave you on the edge of your seat as you race towards the end. You won't be able to put it down, as it is so captivating! Do Claire and Kyle finally get their happy ending? Pick up your copy now and find out! You won't be disappointed!
Thank you Michelle, for another great story! Keeping my fingers crossed for more of the series as the supporting characters were all so lovable as well!
We pick up after Hot Summer School Night. Kyle and Claire, both from different sides of town made a connection, but only had one hot summer night and went their separate ways. However, their worlds turned upside down and now they are both in Southside. When the two finally see each other, things begin to shift. Kyle has been dealt his head and doesn't believe he deserves Claire or trying to find a way out of Southside. Claire is dealing with a lot of emotions and thought seeing Kyle again would bring some light to her dark, but Kyle is determined to stay away. Kyle and Claire continue this push and pull, a dance around each other until one moment makes it hard to stay away. Kyle and Claire take us on an emotional rollercoaster that has so many ups and downs, and have you on the edge of seat. Breaking Her Bad will have you hooked from page one and won't be able to leave Kyle and Claire until you see how it ends for these two. Definitely read this book, you don't want to miss out after reading Hot Summer School Night.
I absolutely love everything that Michelle Mankin writes. Breaking Her Bad starts off where Hot Summer School Night ends. Kyle and Claire's story is dark and sexy and a definite must read!
Kyle and Claire get hot and heavy at the end of Hot Summer School Night and then he disappears without another word. Life takes quite a turn for Claire and she ends up moving to her aunt's home in Southside. She isn't thrilled about going to school there because she is so different and knows people will make fun of her but she tries to make the best of it. Kyle has a reputation to uphold so he pretends he doesn't want anything to do with her even though his feelings for her are strong. Will their different lives continue to push them apart or will they throw caution to the wind and give a relationship a try?
I loved the connection between Kyle and Claire. The secondary characters added lots of depth to the storyline. I loved all the twists and turns this story took. I can't wait to find out who's story she is working on next!
“Music, like life, isn’t just to play. It’s to feel.”
In Breaking Her Bad, Michelle Mankin brings to life a Shakespearean spin of two fated lovers who reunite in Southside—Claire Walsh and Kyle Murphy. As the concluding novel to HSSN, I found the novel to be engaging, and a unique take on the fringes of life and music. Also, the struggles to survive on the streets under the control of drug boss, Martin Skellin, made Kyle’s decision to pursue his destiny, no easy feat. But with support from new found friendships, Claire and Kyle fight the odds together. And the twist at the end, revealed the lies and secrets of Past and Present (unexplored) ABCR kin. Hence, I eagerly await additional books posed from this No Quarter series regarding the remaining characters of interest.
“This is how it’s meant to be. Music’s meant to be felt. Life is meant to be lived. Love is meant to be shared.”
As a new-to-me author, I look forward to reading additional novels by Michelle Mankin, as I feel the need to know more about former tales, specifically Tempest.
After reading the prequal novella a hot summer school night, I was absolutely hooked and dying to know what would happen between these two star-crossed lovers. The story picks up with a series of unfortunate events having taken place to ultimately bring their two worlds crashing together in Southside. Here, Kyle has a role to play and cannot be caught showing any feelings or emotions towards Claire as his enemies will immediately use her to get to him.
Every chapter gave us a little more insight into their new world on the wrong side of the tracks, where factions rule and gangs determine day to day life. The six degrees of separation had my head spinning. I loved the little glances of characters from the Tempest origin saga, seeing the backgrounds and past and future lives of all these interconnected characters was absolutely incredible. There was secrets and lies and plot twists that just kept coming, I loved every minute. This had a bit of everything.
Prepare for a book hangover!!!!! You’ll miss them immediately.
What a wonderful web Michele weaves in this book! It has all the feels! Surprises and twists and turns around every corner! You’ll love the characters you’re meant to love, fall in love with some characters you thought you didn’t like and maybe even hate some more than you already did! You’ll make some new friends too! The relationship development in this book is stellar!
If you’ve read the Tempest Rockstar series, you’re about to get some answers and backstories! Oh and I love Missy!
Even if you haven’t read the others, you’re in for a treat! Make sure you read Hot Summer School Night first.
Kyle and Claire’s story tears your heart out in book one buts slowly mends it back together through book two. Claire’s life topples with the sudden death of her dad, but through the tragedy she’s reborn into the one thing her mother only dreamed of having, music. Kyle and Claire form a bond, much to his plan not to, that proves stronger than the forces who control him from his childhood into his teens. With Claire’s love and determination. Kyle overcomes obstacles meant to break him. They didn’t plan on help from friends and family or to learn lost secrets from long ago. Michelle Mankin does a beautiful job with strong character and a twisted plot to keep readers turning pages.
what a phenomenal conclusion to a amazing book. I could not put this one down. Michelle has completely outdone herself.
This book picks up where book 1 Hot Summer School Nights leaves off.. This book has it all. Its packed with all the angst, suspense, lies, twist and turns, oh and all the sexy times (we can not forget those).
as we found out at the end of Hot Summer School Nights.. Clair's world has been shattered.. now Clair and her mom are back in the Southside living with her aunt.. and she is now attending Southside high... which is nothing like where she went prior.
I loved that in this book Claire came out of her shell and she blossomed and she finally grew a pair (LOL), and refused to back down when all the cards were stacked against her.. she stood up and fought for what she wanted.. and Kyle... he too finally standing up for what he knows and believes is right..
This was a amazing book - thank you for allowing me on this journey with you.
Always so intense This is the sequel to "one hot night school" With Claire's father dead and Claire's family ruined, she and her mother are forced to move to a bad neighborhoods and she is shocked to find Kyle. She finds out who he really is and the innocence she still wears takes a hell of a beating: drugs, sex, violence, the world she discovers blackens the image of the white knight she had met. The story is still well written, intense, moving, steamy, violent, but, in a way, too, upbeat. I liked that the beginning of the story did not reveal the end and it's quite unpredictable. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book
