Jen Kingwell's Quilt Recipes is a brilliant pairing of captivating pieced patchwork projects and delectable desserts. Food and quilts symbolize comfort to designer Jen Kingwell. Her decade-long vision in creating a collection of quilts, family recipes, and home interiors culminates in this one-of-a-kind, 192-page, hardcover volume. Twelve quilt patterns are a brilliant mix of quirky fabrics paired with stripes, petite plaids, delicate lawns, and a sprinkling of brights. Savor each of eight dessert recipes, all timelessly tested, lovingly passed down, and fondly shared. Throughout, Jen connects with makers over a love of quilting, family, and indulging in the sweeter things in life.
intermediate/advanced level blocks boiled down and made simple by a fellow scrap quilter. love the idea of imbuing Jen's quilt "recipes" with her mother's baking ones. quilting brings communities and families together in the most beautiful ways. very excited to try the passionfruit sponge cake!!
Ms Kingwell makes beautiful, modern scrappy quilts with class. I haven't tried any of the recipes from the cooking section, nothing really called to me.
A lovely mix of quilts and recipes, an enjoyable "quilt porn" read. Like most spendy books, especially ones that have patterns , I am lucky that the library has many. I was able to enjoy and be inspired by this without actually adding to my already overweighted and overflowing library shelf!
My modern quilt guild had a fall retreat and the theme was books. A member designed a book quilt block (which I still have to make because I have a librarian DIL), and one of the things assembled was a list of modern quilting books that members recommended, and this was one of them that my library had in their collection. First off, there are a few desserts included here, but it is not a cookbook. I personally do not eat and sew and the whole amalgamation of two things I love to do (cook and quilt) was not appealing. However, I did get an excellent idea for how to finish a Rob By Row that my quilt guild did in 2024--I got stalled because I didn't love the assembly in straight rows, but this book has a quilt where blocks are strung together around a 10 X 10 central block, which would be a great way to use up some orphan blocks as well as left over strips you have cut but never used for previous quilts. And any craft book that I get a good idea from is worth spending time with.
Quilters & bakers alike will love this book! Even more so if you're both ;)
This book has gorgeous photos and a feel similar to that of Laine Publishing (knitters and crocheters may know how beautiful books published by Laine are). Upon flipping through this book, I found several patterns I would love to make, including Wensleydale, This Way Not That, Aunt Sukey's, and Winki Stars. There's even a dog bed pattern!
As far as the baked goods: I've never met a dessert I didn't like, and I'm sure the recipes here will be no exception to that!
In short-- a beautiful book full of beautiful quilts and beautiful bakes!
Although this more recent book by Jen Kingwell is hardcover and beautifully photographed, I found her "Quilt Lovely" more helpful because of its intro to quilting processes in Appendix A. Maybe if I loved baking as much as quilting, I might appreciate this book more, as about one-third of it is recipes. The Goodreads description is misleading, I think, as it is not really about home interiors, with only a few pictures of settings with quilts and none around the baking section. As the earlier book, lots of color and energy in her quilts, with hand and machine stitching options.
Delightful collection of quilts with some tasty looking recipes added in. I love how Jen uses colour and pattern to create such scrappy but coordinated exciting quilts. She is a truly gifted designer.
Great that hand and machine techniques are included. Lots of different sizes quilts and options to change sizes. A great book.
Stunning pictures! This book is beautiful in its photography and layout. The quilt instructions are clear and super easy to follow. I love that each quilt (and recipe) shows the finished product from multiple angles. I also love her color choices and compositions.
Quilt making dreams and delicious looking desserts - all for one to do. Loved the photos of these modern look quilts - great colors to go with any decor - inspiration!!
