"I'm a non-fiction author and project editor (plus I do a bit of journalism). I'm available for project development, writing, project management and I also work as a packager. Click on the links above to see examples of my work.
But first some background: Over the last 20 years, I've written books, magazine and newspaper articles, for online and for television. I get to write about a wide range of subjects, everything from axolotls to zoroastrianism. However, my specialties are natural history, technology and all things scientific. I've worked on projects with Brian May, Patrick Moore, Marcus de Sautoy and Carol Vorderman and for major international publishers, such as Dorling Kindersley, National Geographic, Scholastic, Hachette, Facts on File and BBC Magazines.
I spend my days finding fun ways of communicating all kinds of facts, new and old, to every age group and reading ability. I live in Bristol, England, with my wife and three children. I studied zoology at Bristol University and have had spells working at the zoos in Jersey and Surrey. I used to be something of a conservationist, which included planting trees in Somerset, surveying Vietnamese jungle and rescuing buffaloes from drought-ridden Zimbabwe. Writing jobs have also taken me to the Galápagos Islands, the Amazon rainforest, the coral reefs of Indonesia and the Sahara Desert. Nowadays, I can be found mainly in the attic." ~http://tomjackson.weebly.com/
I read this with my little one over several days. We liked the big images that allowed us to take a closer look at the details of the animals. This is fun because it has bulleted information and a fact file. My seven year old loves fact files or fun facts when we are reading books. This is right up her alley.
Amazing book! This book is oversized so it won't fit on your traditional shelves but it is worth every extra inch. This book showcases the most amazing mammals with illustrations that you will think are photographs. Each animal is spread out on a full two page spread and they give about 6 facts for each one so it isn't overwhelming. Their is also a small square at the bottom of one of the pages that give some fast facts and a height comparison to humans. This book really is Magnificent and would be easy to use for young and old students alike.
This is a beautiful reference book for kids! My mother-in-law introduced me to this series and I fell hard and fast. The illustrations are so well done they look like photographs in all the best ways. The facts are bite-size for kids and easy to digest. There is a wide variety of animals highlighted and these are pages I would frame and put on their wall. So well done! I can’t wait to see the rest of this series!
Once again, super happy with the size of this book! Pages are solid and easy to read. I love that my kids get to explore and find out facts about all the animals (most that we can see in the local zoo!)
They enjoy it and I like that it’s a quick read if you just want to identify animals or extend it and read every detail. Truly love this series.
Our family's favorite nonfiction book about animals. The images are fantastic, and the information is fun and memorable. And my kiddo loves to read out the big, bolded page headers introducing each animal.
Uses beautifully detailed illustrations rather than photographs which is very refreshing and cause you to linger over each page. Very reminiscent of 18th & 19th century natural history books. Facts are set out using animal shaped bullets and use simple, accessible language suitable for even young children. My 5 year old was fascinated and it kept him engaged. All in all a beautiful non-fiction book that is well worth getting hold of and having a look.
This was such a fun and informative read that was easy to finish in an hour. I recently read all three of these books and will be posting the same review for all them. I liked:
1. The pictures were massive and gorgeous! It was so cool to see these animals drawn out for me and associate them with the fun facts.
2. The facts given about the animals were fun and informative. I loved learning about them!
3. I liked how each book took time to show animals from around the world rather than just certain areas. The variety was wonderful to see!
I only didn't like:
1. Some of the drawings were somewhat blurry, but I didn't mind too much.
A fun, quick informative read for those interested in animals.
