All he has to do is find the princess, help her claim the throne, and not fall in love with her. Easy…right?
Mathos’s task was straightforward. Find Lucilla—while evading the Lord High Chancellor’s military, of course—and deliver her safely to the Hawks. He was ready for anything…except how she made him feel. Now, the stubborn beauty with the courageous spirit has awakened a hunger in him, and it’s driving him and his beast wild.
Lucilla is done with her gilded cage. She’s ready to truly live and experience everything she’s been denied. She’s determined to have her independence, not blindly follow the grumpy former palace guard who looks at her like he wants to eat her for dinner. Even if she’s starting to think she might like to take a bite out of him, too.
Mathos, however, isn’t the only one who wants Lucilla. The most dangerous man in the kingdom will stop at nothing to have her. And if Mathos and Lucilla don’t learn to trust each other and work together soon, they’ll be in danger of losing a lot more than their shot at happily ever after.
Mathos, book 3 in The Hawks series, is a sexy, steamy, adult fantasy romance full of swords, shifters (kind of), and tons of action. But fair This book is intended only for readers who love fast-paced adventure, soul mates and found family—and characters who curse when they fight for survival. If that’s you, happy reading.
Jennie Lynn Roberts believes that every kickass heroine should have control of her own story, a swoony hero to fight beside her, and a guaranteed happily ever after. Because that doesn’t always happen in real life, she began creating her own worlds that work just the way they should. And she hasn’t looked back since.
Jennie would rather be writing than doing anything else—except for spending time with her gorgeous family, of course. But when she isn’t building vibrant new worlds, she can be found nattering with friends, baking up a storm, or strolling in the woods around her home in England.
If you want to talk books, romance, movies, reluctant heroes, or just about anything else with Jennie, feel free to contact her on Facebook or Instagram But be prepared to settle in for a long chat if you bring up shifters, vampires, Star Wars, or The Princess Bride….
MATHOS was a bit up and down for me and I didn't enjoy the romance as much as the previous books in the series. However, Jennie Lynn Roberts is a fantastic story teller and this was emotional, well paced, and the writing flowed so well. I really liked Mathos as a side character in earlier books but he's quite grumpy in this one and I missed the flirty charmer that we'd known before. I did like Lucilla and her resilience in the face of her sheltered upbringing and while she makes some mistakes, she owns them and admits when she's wrong. She has some great character growth through the book.
In this case the romance was a little too angsty for me personally and I felt like Mathos made some big mistakes way too close to the end of the book. Not just with Lucilla but also with the Hawks. Mathos was his own worst enemy in this book and it got to be too frustrating for me to fully enjoy their romance.
This is the third instalment of the Hawke series, and by far it’s my favourite, our beautiful Mathos has his feelings well and truly locked away until he meets his match in the new Queen Luciilla. This series has quickly become one of my favourites, each Hawke has his own emotional turmoil, and Mathos has had his fair share of heartache. I definitely found this one to be more tense and gripping.
MATHOS is the third book in The Hawks series, and you really do need to read the other books first.
Mathos is a Tarasque like Tristan, although his scales are burgundy and gold. He is the flirt of the group and is determined not to fall in love like Tristan and Val have, although he does envy the relationships they have. In his experience, ladies are pampered and do nothing apart from heave expectations onto weary shoulders. But then along comes Lucilla.
She is Ballanor's sister and now queen, but she doesn't want to be. After being holed up in a house without any friends to talk to, all Lucy wants to do is travel and see the world. She doesn't trust easily and has been raised to believe Apollyon are better than everyone else.
These two get off to a rocky start with both of them making incorrect assumptions, but circumstances -- and Dornar -- soon make them realise there is so much more to be had than just arguing with each other.
I loved how protective Mathos was of her once he settled down. And Lucy was of him too. Lucy is welcomed into The Hawks group and finds strong friends in Nim, Alanna, and Keeley. There is still chaos and political machinations going on, but with The Hawks by her side, Lucy can handle it. Will Mathos be by her side though, or will his head still be shoved up his ass?
I loved how it was Reece who sorted out Mathos. And now I'm torn. I honestly can't wait for Tor and Keeley's book, but I also NEED to know that Reece gets his HEA. Oh, man. He has taken it so hard and is so unhappy. My heart breaks for him. I guess I will just have to read Tor and Keeley first, and then get my grubby little mitts on Reece.
This series is going from strength to strength, and I love every single one of the characters here. A brilliant addition and one I highly recommend.

**MINOR SPOILERS** This book is part of the Hawks series. The book was offered free as a way to appeal to new readers, so I took the opportunity to try a new author. I probably will not continue reading the series or the author. At the beginning of the story, Lucilla has been a prisoner on an estate for her entire life. She is not treated with respect. One day, she can tell from the body language of the servants that something has happened. She is the second in line for the throne in the world the author has created. She surmises that her brother has had a child and therefore her life as spare is no longer necessary. She decides to run away. This is both desperate and brave as she has not traveled and has few life skills. Concurrently, the Hawks set out to rescue her and bring her to the capital to install her as the new queen. The Hawks are a group that opposed the dead king and his father. When Mathos and another Hawk, Tor, do locate Lucilla after she has run away, she believes they are her enemy. She is fearful and this is compounded by the hostile way she is treated by Mathos. Although I did not read the first two books, it was, in a way, helpful as you are clueless as Lucinda about what has happened and who the good guys are. Mathos is described as having charm in the first two books but in this one, he definitely was not. He was surly and unforthcoming. He misreads Lucilla’s behavior as entitled and he assumes she knows what is going on. This causes a problem, but I also did not like him for it. Because he did not share information with Lucilla, she made a mistake that was avoidable. You learn Mathos’ backstory and I think that is supposed to make you feel a little sympathy towards him, but I did not. He was not that nice during the first part of the book, was kind and supportive in the middle part of the book, but towards the end backslid into some negative behavior. I ended up not liking him very much. Lucilla accepts that she will become queen and vows to do better than her father and brother. She begins to think things through and to really look into people’s motivations. Lucilla was the queen and there are a few places where she curtseyed to others. This would not have been the protocol. It seemed like a careless error. The book seemed formulaic. Mathos is described as having a dual nature. He has a beast side but it is not completely clear what he is. There are several descriptions of scales, claws, and wings. I thought it should have been stated directly. Also, Mathos does not shift though during the book, he does gain the use of his claws. Some of the characters are based on a type of angel and I thought they should have simply been fantasy creatures. It was not Biblically accurate, though the concept exists in other religions and might have been more true to those. The story alternated between Lucilla and Mathos’ point of view. While it was really nice, it was a bit of a surprise that the Hawks all accepted Lucilla so easily. She quickly becomes friends with the other female main characters in the series. They are very positive and affirming to her but how could they not have worried that she was like her father or brother? It would have been nice for a map to be included. There could have been more relationship development between Mathos and Lucilla.
I was gifted my copy of this book, that I write a review was not required.
This is book 3 in The Hawks series, and you really MUST read books one, Tristan, and book 2, Val before this one. There is an on-going story arc across the series, that is not fully recapped. And you, cos I said so! I loved those books, and I loved this one too.
Mathos is a player, calls everyone darlin' and never spends more than one night with a woman. He's happy with his lot. So why then, does Lucilla push all his buttons and make him want things he never knew he wanted? She's a spoilt princess, and he just has to get her to the palace. Lucy, however, does not want to go. Her brother will kill her, and she's suffered enough. Finding out though, that Ballinor is dead and a far darker mind wishes to possess her, mean she has to trust Mathos, and his band of the Hawks.
I loved Mathos in the other books, and here he really does shine. Lucy (as Mathos begins to call her) shines also, but in an entirely different way.
Lucilla has been kept behind closed doors for so long, so she can't remember life before. Suffering at the hands of her brother and his cronies has been her life. She doesn't want to be controlled or coralled anywhere, but Mathos makes a good point. Getting to the palace will secure her future and mean she can make all the choices she wants. But Mathos creeps into her heart, and when he does what he does, you can feel how much Mathos means to her.
Mathos though, feels he does not deserve anyone, let alone a queen. No one can love him, if his own mother can't, surely? Walking away from Lucy and from his brothers was probably the hardest thing he ever did, but also the most stoopidest thing, EVER! But it's WHO that makes him see clearly for the first time in weeks that surprised me! Given as said someone has been missing since the first book, you'll understand why and I really pray that he gets some peace.
He's not next though! Tor is next and given whats said here, I'm intrigued as to what has happened between him and Keeley!
I'm loving this series, I really am! Please keep them coming, I still cannot see the bigger picture and what's going to happen!
“Mathos” is the third warrior to tell us his story in Hawks series, by Jennie Lynn Roberts. It is, like the other two, a tale of adventure and love in a setting of high fantasy, but with emotional elements that rapidly conquer the reader’s hearth. The couple at the time, Mathos and Lucilla, were, in a way, abandoned by their families, and feel unable to handle the responsibilities that life demands. Mathos thinks he didn't do enough for his family, even though he was very young at the time. Lucilla, on the other hand, believes that she has no value as a person, representing only an inconvenience to her family members. Between the elusive warrior and the unwanted princess, a strong feeling arises, as much as the stubborn two struggle to admit. Between fleeing across the country and facing a cunning and merciless enemy, they must learn that they only will be stronger if they stick together and recognize that they are worthy of the love they feel for each other. In this third book, Jennie increases the world building, with more information about the magical races of Hawks warriors – appolyon and nephilim are descendants of angels - and a sea trip for some places in Brythoria. We also knew more about the estrangement between Tor and Keely (and I can't even say how curious I am to know what actually happened between them, crossing fingers to Tor’s story!) and about Reece’s tempestuous family past (Oh, my, Reece’s story deserves to be told, please, Jennie). In all, the series gets better with each book, it's a favorite for me, that love straight medieval fantasy, like C.L. Wilson and Miranda Honfleur. No academy, urban fantasy, omegas and bla bla bla, but good and solid epic romantic fantasy. If you are like me, will surely be a fan of this series, I cannot but recommend. I received an arc for an honest review.
A princess who’s escaped her evil brother, destined to be Queen, a mercenary with an inner beast, and an evil Lord Chancellor who wants to control the new Queen. The race to the Crown has begun...👑
This was a fun book! It started off with lots of action and didn’t stop! Lucilla has escaped but doesn’t realize that she’s now being hunted by different groups of men. There are those that seek to control her, and then there’s Mathos. He wants to bring her to be Queen because that’s her destiny and the only way to avoid civil war. But as they travel together, he gets to know her as a person. He believes he should walk away from her, but can she convince him otherwise?
As they get to know each other, their chemistry starts to burn, and there’s short and steamy scenes on the run 🔥. My favourite part, however, was Lucilla getting stronger and becoming more sure of herself. At first, all she wants to do is run away and be her own person. But as she realizes the importance of her taking the throne, she does not falter, and she steps up to the challenge.
This is the 3rd book in The Hawks series. I haven’t read the first two yet, so I feel like I was missing a little bit of background information (my fault!), but it was still an enjoyable story and can be read as stand-alone. I’ll be checking out the first two instalments now, available on Kindle Unlimited✨.
✨Thank you to the author for providing me with a free copy of the ebook, in exchange for my honest review.✨
This, by far, is my favorite of The Hawks books! Roberts truly has a knack for writing not only believable characters, but believable chemistry, too. And I'm a sucker for the enemies-to-lovers trope!
Mathos and Lucilla chew up every scene they're in. I was hooked to Mathos's quick-wit in the first two books, and he shines in his silo outing. I loved seeing him grow to respect, and later deeply cherish, Lucilla's resolve and willingness to learn. Lucy's character journey was absolutely solid, as well. These two are my favorite couple of the series so far, hands down!
I have mixed feelings about the villain of this book, though. Don't get me wrong; Dornar is every bit a fantastic antagonist. He's conniving, manipulative, and most of all, clever. He's exactky the type of person you love to hate. But the series seems to be hard-core sticking to the villain-of-the-week format, which sucks because I was hoping to see more of him. Though, I do consider the conclusion of Dornar's storyline a major upgrade from what we got with Ballanor last book.
All in all, I so thoroughly devoured this book that it would be criminal of me to give it anything less than full stars! If you love fantasy, romance, epic world-building, and characters that jump off the page, do NOT pass this series up!

I have to say that this series is only getting better and better. This is the third book in the series and you should read the first two before reading this book.
Mathos is normally the funny, flirty guy, but in this book, we see another side of him. We see a more serious guy, but also one that still lets his past decide who he thinks he is and what he can do.
Lucilla is a very strong woman. In a good way, she surprised me. She is not some spoiled rich girl, as we would assume. She has been alone for so many years and mistreated by her family. Instead of falling apart, she has become a strong girl who isn't afraid of going out on her own, just to try to become free.
That being said... Lucilla has never learned about survival, so she is lucky to be found by Mathos and Tor. However, their first meeting doesn't go that well, which results in Lucilla making a wrong decision. But Mathos is luckily not giving up and therefore he tries to save her again.
Their journey and Lucilla's journey to becoming queen are funny and full of action, truths, and trust.
I can definitely recommend for you to read this whole series.
The series just gets better and better and remains Unputdownable
Perfectly crafted story including equal parts adventure, intrigue, slow burn and perfect adult steamy romance, humour, heart and soul searching, profound insight, brotherandsisterhood, fabulous inner dialogues with inner beasts, charming study of all of the characters and their intertwining lives and journeys, loyalty, betrayal, redemption, love……set in a medievalesque world of flying banners.. Awesome! Perfect! Enchanting! Jennie Lynn Roberts knows how to write a captivating story. Understatement. I’ve been reading through every night for the past 3 books ( Tristan, Val, Mathos) and the pre-book (Kaden). I don’t ever want the series to end!
This is part of a series so perhaps wasn't the right book for me to start with but actually worked ok as a standalone fantasy romance. Our heroine is locked away, downtrodden and desperate to escape. The hero is a displaced baron and now mercenary wanting only to do his duty. When the King dies its to his sister people look but as she's ran away not knowing what has happened the hunt is well and truly on but who will find her first ? This was very enjoyable and had a terrifically different storyline to other books I've read recently. The characters are interesting, the world and its antecedents unique and I very much look forward to escaping into the authors imagination again soon.
Jennie Lynn Roberts has done it again. I was hooked from the first page of this well-written story. The characters, setting and everything about the series are amazing. Mathos is a great addition to the Hawks series.
Mathos continues after everything that has happened in Val ...
Mathos has to find Lucilla and take her to the Hawks. He didn’t expect her to be someone he needed in his life. She made him feel things he has never felt before. His family has abandoned him and he doesn’t feel worth it to be in her life.
Lucilla wants to be free. She escaped her home where her brother has kept her. Mathos has found her and she wasn’t sure if she could trust him. The moment they were alone a few things have changed. They were pushed to trust each other because of the danger around them.
They both need to make big decisions that will change their whole life.
Jennie Lynn Roberts did an amazing work with the third installment in The Hawks Series. I can’t wait to read Tor (The Hawks #4). The Hawks series is one of my favorites from this year.
I would recommend The Hawks series to all Adult Fantasy Romance Readers.
This series is quickly becoming a comfort read for me. Everytime I pick one of these books up I get immersed in this world and these characters. I LOVE the theme of family and friendship. It was fun getting to know Mathos more in this story. I really liked how Lucilla was so brave and supporting and willing to fight for Mathos and he was willing to do the same. The romance was amazing with just enough sweet and spicy moments. I loved everything about this and I'm so excited to continue this series and know more about every member of the Hawks.
Mathos was thoroughly enjoyable! The story flows seamlessly and ties all of the stuff from the previous books. It also sets up the next story well. Definitely recommend reading this series.
So this was really excellent and the only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because honestly I got so annoyed with Lucilla in the beginning. She completely destroys that annoyance though, she becomes this bad ass. And Mathos was such a drama queen. But also, redeems himself. Really an excellent part of this world building though. Onto Tor and Keely!

Hard to chose, but I think Mathos is my favorite Hawk so far. It was a difficult choice, but Mathos is just so easy to fall in love with. Lucilla and Mathos both show so much growth through out the book, you can’t help but root for them. Another great book in the series.
