He studied Fine Arts at Musashino University. At first, he was more interested in illustration, printmaking, and painting than in manga. However, when he considered the best way to make a living from his art, he decided to focus on the world of Japanese comics and trained himself, rather than the usual approach of working for several years as an apprentice to an experienced manga artist.
He was still a student when his first work, The Boss Is an Onee, was published. He soon attracted attention for his distinctive drawing style, his fantastical and melancholic plots, and his use of fantasy characters and anthropomorphic animals.

Monotone Blue sở hữu một thế giới nơi mà những con vật có vẻ ngoài, cuộc sống như một con người. Bối cảnh truyện xoay quanh một trường nam sinh - nơi chủ yếu gồm các loài có vú (chó, mèo, cáo...).
Hachi, một cậu mèo với một cuộc sống nhàm chán tại trường học, và cuộc sống của Hachi đã thay đổi khi có sự xuất hiện của Aoi - cậu thằn lằn vừa mới chuyển trường. Bằng một cách thần kỳ mà giữa Hachi và Aoi trở nên thân thiết, vượt qua những suy nghĩ về sự khác biệt giữa các giống loài.
Mình thích cách tác giả sáng tạo ra thế giới trong tác phẩm này, thể hiện những bản năng cơ bản mà các loài động vật vốn có - kết hợp cùng những sinh hoạt hằng ngày của con người; một thế giới mà sau khi đọc xong mình vẫn muốn đọc tiếp.
Mối quan hệ giữa Hachi và Aoi nhẹ nhàng, đáng yêu, mình thích những biểu cảm của các nhân vật được thể hiện qua từng nét vẽ. Mình còn tự cười một mình :))) khi cảm thấy rằng cậu thằn lằn dễ thương vãi!?
Tuy nhiên phải nói thế nào nhỉ...? Mình thích những gì tác giả đã thể hiện trong quyển manga này, từ các vấn đề, nỗi lo của nhân vật tương tự như cuộc sống thực của con người. Nhưng xét cho cùng đây vẫn chỉ là một câu chuyện đơn giản - theo cách "Tớ thích cậu là chính cậu", "Dù cậu khác biệt tớ vẫn thích cậu" đại loại vậy. Nhưng mình vẫn thích Monotone Blue , chứ nếu là quyển manga BL giữa-hai-con-người-thực-sự với cốt truyện này thì chưa chắc điểm mình đã cao thế này. Hy vọng tác giả sẽ làm thêm phần tiếp theo cơ :'((

The author's portrayal of the characters' lives is very realistic and feels very true to life, which makes it simple to understand. The realistic art style is stunning. The author does a fantastic job of developing the characters and plot as the story goes along, and the character designs are distinctive and recognisable. The theme is also simple to understand.

This manga was an absolute masterpiece from start to finish. The art? STUNNING!! Every panel was thoughtfully composed and emotionally resonant, I wanted to frame half the pages!
The romance was perfectly balanced, sweet with just enough angst to feel real, but never overwhelming. The pacing felt so natural, and the mature storytelling made the character growth truly satisfying.
But what really got me was the emotional connection between the characters. Watching them learn to be vulnerable, to trust, and to accept each other completely? It hit me right in the feels. Having someone see all of you, the messy, hidden parts and love you anyway? That’s the kind of comfort we all crave.

The art is beautiful and the premise was interesting. I loved all the characteristics of the animals that were included and how the story ended, but I didn't like how quickly the assault part was forgiven, where Aoi was forcefully bitten, and their relationship needed to be developed more. Hachi only started interacting with Aoi because of his blue tail, which he admits (which is nice!), and this wasn't bad per se, but that fact did make it more relevant for there to be time given for Hachi to realize he likes spending time with Aoi outside of his fascination. Which there was, but not enough.

No me gustó demasiado su tomo único de historias entre personajes animales y compré este cómic con miedo a que fuera similar. Pero para nada. Monotone Blue se centra solo en dos personajes, en el trauma y en las relaciones entre personajes. Me encantan los dos protagonistas y como evolucionan. Además, por supuesto, el dibujo es preciosísimo.

Hachi è un gatto perennemente annoiato e alla ricerca di nuovi stimoli. Nella sua scuola gli altri studenti sono prevalentemente mammiferi ed essere circondato sempre dagli stessi animali lo... Annoia terribilmente. Passa la maggior parte del tempo a dormire e fantasticare. Quando in classe arriva un nuovo alunno, la lucertola Aoi, non ci fa molto caso. Il nuovo studente sembra fin troppo timido e impacciato per attirare la sua attenzione e a parte l'aspetto fisico, diverso dai coetanei, non nota nulla di insolito o entusiasmante. Quando dopo una lezione però si imbatte nel compagno di classe non può fare a meno di notare la coda di quest'ultimo. Quel colore così blu e brillante lo emoziona nel profondo tanto da spingerlo a chiedere ad Aoi di poterla toccare. I due stringono un patto: Aoi farà vedere e toccare la coda ad Hachi dopo le lezioni e quest'ultimo non parlerà della sua appendice a nessun altro studente. Un accordo che in poco tempo rivoluzionerà la vita di entrambi. Hachi per la prima volta ha modo di interagire con una creature diversa dall'ordinario. Aoi nonostante il carattere si rivela un'anima gentile e intelligente, un giovane in grado di farsi notare nonostante il comportamento timido. Ogni lato di Aoi, anche il più piccolo e nascosto, per Hachi è come un tesoro, qualcosa di prezioso e inestimabile che rende il nuovo amico unico e insostituibile. Nasce in lui un sentimento di affetto, un desiderio di protezione e una costante ricerca di risposte. Hachi infatti nonostante appaia come il classico studente svogliato e poco sveglio è in realtà molto intelligente e furbo e nota subito il disagio della lucertola. Desidera scoprire i motivi che spingono Aoi a chiudersi a riccio ed evitare le interazioni sociali. Inizia così a dimostrare il suo affetto dedicando anima e corpo alla cura e la protezione dell'amico. Un sentimento così intenso da stravolgere il cuore di Aoi. Quest'ultimo è un'anima candida e spezzata. Si è trasferito più volte per colpa del bullismo e sta ancora cercando di leccarsi le ferite. Si vergogna del suo aspetto fisico, del suo essere così strano e diverso e vive nel terrore che gli altri mammiferi possano fargli del male o umiliarlo come successo in passato. Non riesce a capire i motivi che spingono Hachi ad avvicinarsi a lui ed è molto diffidente di fronte quelle richieste di attenzione. Hachi cerca in tutti i modi di coinvolgerlo, di farlo aprire e Aoi teme che possa solo essere un gioco crudele. Dopotutto Hachi è un gatto e quale migliore preda di lui, quale miglior "topolino" di lui... Una lucertola senza amici e terrorizzata dall'attenzione altrui. Per il poverino è molto difficile aprirsi ed essere sincero con i suoi sentimenti. Ogni volta che cerca di avere coraggio e parlare del passato i ricordi lo bloccano e traumatizzano ricordandogli di essere "solo una lucertola, solo un giocattolo nelle mani dei più potenti". L'interazione tra i due animaletti quindi non è delle più facili. Nonostante il carattere spontaneo e rilassato di Hachi ci vorrà non poco tempo per permettere ad Aoi di trovare la forza necessaria per aprirsi al mondo. Ho adorato la delicatezza con cui viene mostrata la crescita di entrambi i personaggi, l'evoluzione che la loro amicizia riesce a portare nei loro cuori. Hachi e Aoi grazie alla vicinanza reciproca hanno modo di vedere un altro lato del mondo, di mettersi nei panni l'uno dell'altro e di capire meglio se stessi e il prossimo. Mi ha fatto una tenerezza infinita vedere Aoi riprendere piano piano le redini della sua vita andando oltre le ferite e le umiliazioni subite in passato e allo stesso modo mi ha riempito d'orgoglio vedere Hachi diventare più... Empatico... Andare oltre la sua noia per interessarsi a un altro essere vivente abbastanza da imparare ad amare ogni sua sfumatura. La loro storia è dolcissima e ricca di significato. Un manga che ci mostra la forza dell'amicizia e dell'amore, la forza di rialzarsi anche dopo le cadute peggiori e di trovare il proprio posto nel mondo. Mi sono innamorata follemente di ogni singolo elemento. Dalla storia alla caratterizzazione dei personaggi. Dal tratto del disegno ai messaggi di forza e speranza che caratterizzano ogni pagina. È un racconto incantevole e che tramite deliziosi animaletti ha modo di farci sospirare e sognare. L'ho trovato delicato al punto giusto. Se già avete letto Wizdoms fa decisamente al caso vostro. Un volumetto che mi sento di consigliare a chiunque sia alla ricerca di una storia semplice ma per nulla banale. Un volumetto coraggioso e in grado di conquistare anche il cuore più duro.

The concept is really interesting and the art is absolutely gorgeous, vibrant and fun.
That said, from the first few chapters, I felt something weird while reading this manga. I realised that the animal races could be taken as an allegory for human races but it didn't line up that well. Moreover, even when disregarding the near race allegory, I really didn't like the lesson or foundation of the relationship.

4.5 ⭐️ Such a beautiful story about young love and friendship. I think Nagabe is one of the best modern mangakas, and I absolutely love their work! Excited to read more of their stories in the future.

Aoi es un lagarto que acaba de llegar a un instituto lleno de mamíferos. Es una rareza y desde el principio se convierte en el alumno que más destaca. Y él solo quieren que lo traten como a uno más, que su apariencia no lo empañe todo como le ha ocurrido otras veces. Que no lo miren por lo que es sino por quién es. Su vida no es fácil y todas esas miradas que lo persiguen se lo recuerdan a cada instante.
Hasta que conoce al gato Hachi, arisco y reservado como buen gato que es, y pone su mundo del revés.
Una historia muy bonita y repleta de valores, eso encontramos en este tomo único que gustará tanto a fans de Nagabe como a los que se inician con el autor.
Por medio de animales antropomórficos hace una crítica racial, toca el tema del bullying, las inseguridades, la importancia de la amistad y de encontrarse a uno mismo.

A super cute, heartfelt, and endearing one-shot manga with a fast-paced romance and just the perfect amount of drama. I loved it cover to cover!

I’m a fan of Nagabe’s works by default, and Monotone Blue was no exception. I would actually recommend this book to people who are fans of Classmates, because it had this really tender, pensive, quiet coming-of-age feeling, showing the way two classmates’ feelings gently blossom with the turning of the seasons. There was something very sweet about it.
In particular, I feel as though the beastfolk element of this book was really well done. Hachi being a cat is so very integral to the story. He’s lazy, fickle, haughty, and antisocial. Once he gains an interest in something, however, he wants to possess it completely. Especially with the fact that their main classmates are portrayed as dogs, it makes sense that Hachi would be overly wary of them, familiar with them yet unable to connect with them on the same level. The sense of characterization is very strong with all of the animal archetypes shown.
Of course, everything changes when Hachi meets Aoi, a new lizard classmate, and he finally becomes interested in another living person unlike ever before. This works out well for Aoi, who is traumatized after a life of being othered, and truly needs to rediscover trust and love for other people. Although I feel as though the writing is a bit shaky at times, there’s an unmistakably sweet core in this about learning to open up your heart to a true friend, sprinkled with coming-of-age crushing & being curious about other people’s bodies (in a sexual way, yes, but I do feel as though the sexual part is pretty innocent and wholesome in this book).
As always, I’m obsessed with the bold contrast that Nagabe uses in their artworks, along with great composition, hatching & crosshatching, vivid atmospheric settings, and a strong sense of mood. The only thing I think is this book’s loss is the fact that there isn’t any color, actually. I wish that this whole book had been in black and white with only the blue of Aoi’s tale being shown, so that we could have really gotten a sense for the way in which Aoi’s presence lit up Hachi’s life. Only being told that Aoi’s tail is a vivid, beautiful, sky blue feels like a loss when manga is a visual medium. I think making a stylistic choice like this would have vastly improved the final product, personally.
These two just make for such a sweet pair and I enjoyed them. Reading a one-shot is always so nice – I love when mangaka have a story to tell, and they tell it, short and sweet. Overall, I thought this was an enjoyable and emotional tale (tail) about a very tender age of life.

Un lagarto llamado Aoi llega a un instituto repleto de mamíferos, en el que estudia el gato Hachi. Algo que, para la rutina aburrida de Hachi, tampoco significa nada. Sin embargo, después de clase, entrevé el secreto de Aoi, un intensísimo color azul que le provoca un despertar. Aunque Aoi se empeñe en ocultarlo, Hachi le hace una propuesta...
Aunque la historia de estos dos animales parece sencilla y predecible en un inicio, todo tiene más profundidad y oscuridad de lo que parece. Nagabe aprovecha para explorar temas bastante importantes y duros, que no voy a desvelar, pero que le dan un giro a este tomo que lo hace más interesante.
La relación que va surgiendo entre Hachi y Aoi me ha gustado mucho y muy natural. Con el paso de las horas, ambos se acercan, pero todavía existe cierta distancia entre ellos que dificulta su entendimiento. Esto lleva a algunos momentos intensos que me ha gustado sobre todo por la expresividad de los dibujos y su dinamismo.
Como me pasa con otros tomos únicos, el final es lo que menos me ha gustado, me ha parecido un poco abrupto y que deja mucho sin contar. Esto es un arma de doble filo, porque aunque deje algo de descontento al leerlo, también da pie a una posible continuación.
En definitiva, un manga breve y entretenido de leer que, si bien no es un imprescindible, sí toca temas muy interesantes.

Aunque la historia de estos dos animales parece sencilla y predecible en un inicio, todo tiene más profundidad y oscuridad de lo que parece. Nagabe aprovecha para explorar temas bastante importantes y duros, que no voy a desvelar, pero que le dan un giro a este tomo que lo hace más interesante.
La relación que va surgiendo entre Hachi y Aoi me ha gustado mucho y muy natural. Con el paso de las horas, ambos se acercan, pero todavía existe cierta distancia entre ellos que dificulta su entendimiento. Esto lleva a algunos momentos intensos que me ha gustado sobre todo por la expresividad de los dibujos y su dinamismo.
Como me pasa con otros tomos únicos, el final es lo que menos me ha gustado, me ha parecido un poco abrupto y que deja mucho sin contar. Esto es un arma de doble filo, porque aunque deje algo de descontento al leerlo, también da pie a una posible continuación.
En definitiva, un manga breve y entretenido de leer que, si bien no es un imprescindible, sí toca temas muy interesantes.

aoi deserves better 😭 he’s such a good kid, i want to see more of his story continue 🥺. (he’s my favorite charac in this manga^^.) hachi is fine too except,,,the biting portion 😶. dont get me wrong, im glad he apologized yet…why!!! sigh :/ but regardless, i love the quietness of their relationship. ALSO, the art! the art is super nice, as expected of nagabe ><.

If I had a nickel for every BL story involving anthropomorphic boys written by Nagabe I've read, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice. As always, I love anything from Nagabe. This story was actually a bit more serious and more realistic than Wize Wize Beasts of the Wizarding Wizdoms. I was going to do a summary but I don't want to give too much away since it is one volume. So to start, I loved the friendship that Hachi and Aoi build. I relate a lot to Aoi because I also am insecure when I make friends. I am constantly questioning the motives of others and their sincerity. Though our traumas are very similar, Aoi was a victim of assault and attempted rape (which I am not and can't even begin to understand that pain). The way Aoi deals with his trauma is very realistic, it's not dramatic. It is debilitating in strange ways. Hachi is also very interesting. I really like how his carefree attitude does not change. The story doesn't force him to be something else or "better". What he does change is his lack of interest. He gains a new passion with Aoi. Their mutual crushes are very cute and I would've loved to have seen that develop further, but I think the progression was natural and it made sense. This story was cathartic and sweet. It's enjoyable and relatable. I would recommend this to someone that enjoys Nagabe's other works and Natsuki Kizu's works (ie "Given").
Side Note: The side characters/friends are so funny. Such awesome boys and good allies. They didn't tease Hachi or Aoi because they might be in a queer relationship (only that they might be in a relationship period lol). All around fun guys that I would like to be friends with.

I love the art, it's beautiful and alive. And some of the interactions between the leads are very cute and fun. But I think the book is way too rapey for the cute teen love story it is. Bullying happens, and sometimes it includes very violent physical and sexual attacks too, but if the story goes there, it should be dealt with the proper weight.

Cómo me explico por favor que es el primer manga furro de mi colección, el tercero que leo en la vida y el primero del año, y a su vez uno de los mejores BL que he tenido el placer de leer y hasta ahora el mejor del año. Es bellísimo 💙
Mientras leía a Hachi no podía evitar el pensar en mis gatas y decir "así se comportan" o "esto es muy ellas" porque así lo fue, tal cual, muy bien personificado. Es uno de mis personajes favoritos lejos.
En cuanto a Aoi, no tengo ni idea de cómo serán los lagartos, solo sabía el detalle que se revela casi al final porque lo leí de muy chico en un libro, pero igual impacta. Y así sea o no como se comporten los lagartos, Nagabe hizo un trabajo excelente porque Aoi me enamoro 💙
Lo que comparten ambos personajes es muy especial y acá se nota mucho, otro punto a favor 💙 las dinámicas son increíbles.
La verdad es que me sorprendió y para bien, es la nueva joya de mi biblioteca 💙

Aslında klişe bir okula yeni gelen gizemli/travmalı çocuk ve ona ilgi duyan umursamaz serseri çocuk hikayesi. Mangayı farklı kılansa hikayeyi bir kertenkele ve kedi üzerinden av/avcı penceresinden anlatması ve bununla ilintili olarak fazlası..
Kertenkele ve kedinin, hayvan doğalarından beklenen hareketleri yapmalarını eğlenceli ve zeki buldum. Nitekim çizgi insan tarafından yapılsa karakterden soğutacak hareketler, çizgi kedi tarafından yapılınca doğasının gereği oluyor.. Yine bu noktadan üretilen bir mizah var.
